Book Description

Book Description
Agricultural research and development has stimulated enormous increases in agricultural productivity in the twentieth century. Now, in response to common pressures, countries the world over are changing how they manage and pay for agricultural R & D. Paying for Agricultural Productivity reviews agricultural R & D policy in Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States and assesses whether the new approaches are raising or lowering the efficiency and effectiveness of R & D. To complement the case studies, the book analyzes trends in R & D investment in twenty-two developed countries. Paying for Agricultural Productivity will be an invaluable resource for economic and development specialists concerned with agricultural research and development, as well as for farmers, food processors, agricultural wholesalers and retailers, environmentalists, and research scientists.

Today every schoolchild learns that our solar system contains nine planets in orbit around the sun--plus a variety of other bodies such as asteroids--but as Richard Baum and William Sheehan describe in In Search of Planet Vulcan, the discovery of these facts was far from straightforward. In a book rich with historical anecdotes, Baum and Sheehan depict centuries of efforts to enumerate the inhabitants of our solar system. In some cases the successes are stunning proof of the veracity of Newtonian mechanics; in others, such as the quest for a hypothetical planet "Vulcan" orbiting well inside Mercury, the fallacies and failures are equally staggering.
Book Description
The intriguing narrative of one of astronomy's strangest searches for a planet that never existed.
Customer Reviews:
A great read.......2005-05-20
This was a fascinating story, the search for a planet whose orbit was inside Mercury's. So sure were astronomers of the time that it existed they gave it a name, Vulcan. An amateur, Lescarbault, claimed to have seen it pass in front of the Sun, but in the proceeding years, no one else could catch a glimpse of it. So, did it really exist, and if not, how to explain the perturbation in Mercury's orbit? I thought this book was very well written in its depictions of real people and the encounters they had with each other as they raced to become the first to prove the existence of Vulcan. The hard science is written in a way to be understandable even to people like me without a mind for it.
Another home run by Sheehan..........2000-12-06
Another gem of a book by William Sheehan, joined in this venture by astronomer Richard Baum. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Newton's theory of universal gravitation had enjoyed some incredible triumphs, and stood as a monument to the mathematization of science. Three thorny problems remained however, to disrupt the harmony of Newton's universe: the motion of the moon, Mercury, and Uranus. Sheehan and Baum tell the amazing tale of mathematics and astronomy in their pursuit of the answers to these puzzles. This book is a must-read for any buff of astronomy history - Newton, Horrocks, Clairaut, Laplace, Lagrange, and so on. Considerable time is given to the discovery of Neptune, first on paper by Adams and Le Verrier, and by Galle at the telescope. Sheehan and Baum's retelling of his historic tale is even better documented than Grosser's book on the subject. Finally, the problem of the shift in Mercury's orbit. The pressure to find a Newtonian solution was immense, given the previous victories obtained using Newtonian mechanics. Le Verrier was susceptible to this pressure, owing at least in part to his previous success with Neptune. However, this problem resisted even Newton, and was not finally solved until Einstein's theory of gravity supplanted Newton's early in the 20th century. The interwoven stories of astronomers and their diligent search for the elusive planet Vulcan are entertaining and provide a unique perspective on 19th century astronomy.
No good.......1999-08-19
This was a pitiful excuse for a book. Not one mention of Mr. Spock or any of the other great Vulcans from Star Trek. You would think that if they wanted to do a search for the planet Vulcan, they would have taken it more seriously.
The concepts behind the discovery of the solar system.......1999-07-17
As an occasional naked eye astronomer I was able to follow Sheehan and Baum's work without difficulty. They provide an accessible history of the development of the concepts that lie behind the discovery of the solar system from Ptolemy to Einstein. They describe observations by astronomers but also pay attention to contributions from mathematicians without presenting the readers with a single equation. There are brief biographical asides on some of the main players (Sheehan's day job is as a psychiatrist) but the main thrust of the book is scientific.
Particular interest is shown in the (serendipitous) discovery of Uranus followed by the (predicted) discovery of Neptune. The discovery of Neptune based on the known perturbations of the orbit of Uranus. This success focussed attention on the erratic orbit of Mercury, which advances seemingly inexplicably. We now know that this apparent motion is caused by the bending of space/time by the Sun's gravity, but the authors leave this for last. At the top of the conceptual staircase we learn that when Einstein explained the advance in Mercury's orbit using Relativity he couldn't sleep for 3 days with the excitement.
A compelling search for a nonexistent planet.......1999-01-29
I know what you're thinking--an entire book about a planet that doesn't even exist? Although Vulcan doesn't exist, fortunately this book does, because it's very good. The early pages tell us a little more than we need to know about Kepler and Newton, who are hardly central to the story, but then it moves to the discovery of new planets--Uranus, Neptune, and then to the heart of the matter: the irregularities in Mercury's motion that seemed to signal the existence of Vulcan, a planet inside Mercury's orbit. The book has plenty of notes and references, but it's also a lively and compelling read. It fits in well with other recent planet books, such as David Grinspoon's VENUS REVEALED, Alan Stern and Jacqueline Mitton's PLUTO AND CHARON, and Ken Croswell's PLANET QUEST. Plus, it's got a cool cover!

The second edition of a bestseller, The Everglades Handbook: Understanding the Ecosystem continues to provide a wealth of information on the entire ecosystem of the Everglades. Offering the essentials of what the ecosystem is and how it works, the Handbook benefits those addressing issues such as Everglades restoration, water management, wildlife management, and water quality problems in urban and agricultural planning. With an emphasis on natural history, the text is unified around themes of biogeography and ecosystem functions of the plant and animal communities. It presents current and historical geology, discussions of human impacts, ecosystem degradation, and planned restoration, and covers the socioeconomic aspects of the Everglades ecosystem. What's new in the Second Edition: · Additional chapter on Big Cypress Swamp · New section on Lake Okeechobee and its headwaters · A new synthesis chapter which diagrams ecological succession and food webs
Customer Reviews:
Satisfactory.......2005-10-02
I hae been reading several pages in this book so far for my enviromental science class. I have found the pages very helpful in understanding the Everglades enviroment.
A Wonderful Guide to Understanding the Everglades.......2005-05-16
As an environmental consultant, I found the first edition of The Everglades Handbook to be very useful, and the second edition even better! There are new chapters and very important new information, such as the new chapters on the Big Cypress Swamp, Lake Okeechobee, and "Synthesis" with its diagrams of succession and food chains, and the updated final chapter with details of human history in South Florida. I especially looked forward to the updated information on the Everglades restoration - it was excellent. The new edition is well worth the price (I heard that CRC Press reduced the price by 10%!). I can't recommend this book more highly for those people wanting to become familiar with how the Everglades works as an ecosystem.
Everglades Hanbook will enrich your visit.......2005-03-23
Probably the most useful and interesting single book on the Everglades. If you're on a budget, the older edition contains much of the same information at a fraction of the cost.

Book Description
A fiberglass hull's seamless nature leads many boatowners to conclude that repair must be difficult. Wrong. Here, clearly and abundantly illustrated, is all you need to know to seal joints, bed hardware, replace portlights, locate leaks, fix cracks and even holes, restore your hull's gloss, renew nonskid decks, and much more. You'll wonder what you were worried about.

Just the facts.......2006-08-13
Style wise, this is the opposite of The Sailmaker's Apprentice by Marino. This is not a book to pick up while sitting by the fire sipping tea. It is a great reference book with concise "how to" information. I have a friend who told me that there is nothing beyand repair on a fiberglass boat. After reading this book, I'm beginning to belive him. Good explanations of both materials and techniques - including safety.
Go ahead and get the grinder!.......2006-07-20
A sweet book that gave me the confidence to 'go for it' and tackle some ugly holes in my dinghy hull. What's more it was not that bad after all! It's all here, from finishing the gelcoat scrapes/cracks to repairing gaping holes- you may want to buy in conjunction with 'sailboat refinishing' to help with that final effort. Fully recommended!
Good advice.......2006-07-14
This book covers the basic as well as some advanced topics about repairing all types of fiberglass hulls, decks, through hull fittings, teak wood, and other related topics. I recommend the book for the beginner who needs basic information about fiberglass repair.
2nd best book on Fiberglass repairs, and not just for sailboats.......2006-03-08
While I actually like "Fiberglass Repair: Polyester or Epoxy" by David and Zora Aiken a touch better than this book, they are both strong. They both have lots of clear ILLUSTRATIONS, which to my mind are preferable to photos at depicting this sort of information.
Blister repair (not addressed at all in older books on fiberglass repeair), wet deck cores, gelcoat cosmetics are all covered, as well as a good discussion of when to use Epoxy resins versus the cheaper Polyesters. I recommend this book for owners of ALL fiberglass boats, as the construction and repairs are quite universal.
The relatively large format of this book helps the clarity of the drawings, and makes it possible to imagine using it like a cookbook, propped open on the workbench as you step through the steps.
Excellent coverage of fiberglass repairs.......2001-10-04
Covers all the areas I needed. Soft & rotten cores, broken fiberglass, chipping, etc. I liked it so much I just ordered his book on refinishing.

Interesting!.......2007-10-18
WEll Eric Brown Jr lived QUITE a life...before he was even out of high school. This is one of those books that you KNOW you shouldn't read, but you can't stop! He was kind of all over the place, but it kept my attention.
Total let down.......2006-08-12
About mid way through the book...I kept asking myself where is he going with this. I can't believe it got so many good reviews. It was choppy and disjointed. The only reason why I kept reading it was because I thought it was going to get better and it never did. The book had to too many story lines with no central theme. Is hooking up with your best friend's wife considered a happy ending?
A Keeper!.......2005-12-04
I think this is a exellent read... it never bored me! he did try to cram alot in toward the end...but i liked it. it was very sexy and had a great storyline...i took a chance on this book..just looking at the cover and reading the back and to my surprise i lucked up on a really...really good book...(cause ive had some bad experiences doing that!) so if you like the books i like...trust me you will like this one!
Great Read!.......2005-03-15
This was a very good read! So much drama yet very entertaining. I loved it from the beginning to the end. I have to admit that the end was shocking but that made the book more interesting.
Love Don't Come Easy by Alex Hairston .......2004-11-11
Love don't come easy by Alex Hairston is the book that all readers should go out and buy. This story has a lot of unique qualities and it was tastefully written . The story is based on a young man named Eric who was raised by two successful parents. Eric's not your average teenager. He is far from been perfect but he is conscious and confident who has a good understanding of life. As Eric takes you on his journey you would find yourself been proud of him, laughing with him and getting mad at him. Through each character Mr. Hairston expressed black pride, the qualities of black families, importance of education, self respect, true love, survival, the power of sexuality and the acknowledgment of God. Each characters of this book are truly unforgettable. Love don't come easy is my #1 favorite novel and once you read it I am sure it will be your favorite book too.

Da Bomb!!!.......2003-12-03
This book is the best book that I have read in a while. I just couldn't put the book down and was sad when it ended. JT Smith wrote in a style that made me feel as if I knew Javier Collins personally. I felt as if I was there in the midst of it all. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I was told that this was Mr. Smith's first novel. Well, excellent Job J.T. I loved it!!!
