Book Description

Since its inception in the early 1950s, this work has become the "bible" for those who need to evaluate the hazard of substances used in commerce. It is the only reference that combines, for so many substances, data on toxicological, fire, reactivity, explosive potential, and regulatory information. Highly acclaimed in the professional journals, it was reviewed as "an indispensable reference guide for professionals responsible for managing industrial safety and occupational exposure...an extraordinary work," and as "a monumental work...Efforts like this are the things of what history is made," among other reviews.

SAX's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials Ninth Edition-CD-ROM Version

The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewer, an EPA First Responder, found the Ninth Edition of Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials-CD ROM version (SAX CD) to be a powerful database of easily retrievable, detailed, and pertinent information. The reviewer envisions the target users of the SAX CD deriving the most benefit to be: chemical operators, chemical process engineers, chemists, clinical toxicologists, fire companies, first responders, HAZMAT teams, industrial hygienists, plant managers, physicians, police departments, process safety managers, research professionals, risk management planners, safety engineers, transportation officers, and treatment storage and disposal facility (TSDF) personnel.

The 22,380 materials included are categorized at a minimum according to: Listing Name, Hazard Rating, Chemical Name, Molecular Formula, Molecular Weight, Chemical and Physical Properties, Synonyms, Toxicity Data with References, (instantly accessible by screen "pop-ups"), and Safety Profile.

Where available, NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limits, OSHA Permissible Exposure Levels, ACGIH Threshold Limit Values, (all expressed as Time Weighted Averages) and German MAK exposure limits are included. Consensus Reports (Community RTK, EPA TSCA and Genetic Inventory list) along with DOT hazard Classifications and UN/NA 4-digit identifier (for HM-181), CAS Registry number, and Class (carcinogen, mutagen, teratogen, primary irritant, food additive, etc.) are also included.

For forty years, NST/Engineers, Inc. personnel and associates have found editions of SAX to be an invaluable resource. The Ninth Edition on CD ROM provides the instant retrieval capabilities sought by the electronic communication age. The program includes an intelligent default, twelve-characteristic, search engine. It highlights each "hit" in the text and has a "tracking" system that allows the user to look forward or to "backtrack".

In the NST/Engineers, Inc. trials, SAX CD was used in "mock" HAZMAT spills. The reviewer found that the initial assessments of the spills were conducted many times faster by using the SAX CD. Armed with a laptop computer, as are most police and other emergency responders, the addition of this software will greatly decrease response time and reduce the confusion that routinely surrounds hazardous materials incidents. An increase in facility and public safety will be provided by the fingertip access to the knowledge base in the SAX CD .

The SAX CD works on both PC and Macintosh platforms.

Before you buy, you should know that this publication is only 10 pages long, and aside from giving some general information about why and why not to use the 360 degree evaluation system, never actually provides good advice on how to construct a program.

                    Description:
An outbreak of the western blackheaded budworm [Acleris gloverana (Walsingham)] defoliated 170,000ha of western hemlock [Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.] on the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, Canada, between 1996 and 2001. Defoliation was first noted in mature forests in the southern portion of the archipelago, and was observed occurring progressively northward in subsequent years. Much of the defoliation occurred in juvenile stands with trees less than 40 years old. Many of these stands had been spaced to reduce tree density. A two-stage, stratified survey was used to compare defoliation in spaced and unspaced stands in two age classes: younger than 25 years old, and from 28 to 39 years old. After 1 year of defoliation, trees in spaced stands sustained approximately 20% more defoliation than those in unspaced stands. Neither age class nor its interaction with spacing affected overall defoliation. Defoliation was most intense in the top third of the tree crown. Top-stripping (complete defoliation of leading shoot in crown) occurred in most stands, but was more frequent and most severe in the youngest, spaced stands. The tallest trees within a stand were most severely defoliated. The implications of these patterns of susceptibility for management of western hemlock in Pacific coastal forests are discussed.

                              Book Description

This book describes more than 220 copies, nearly all of European provenance, of various astronomical publications by Ferdinand Verbiest, S.J. (1623 - 1688), either xylographical copies sent from Peking (reports, instrument drawings, eclipse maps, ephemeredes; stellar maps), or copies of Astronomia Europaea. This multiplies the number of known copies by ten. The first part of this book describes the characteristics of this astronomical corpus - one of the most spectacular bibliographical testimonia of the Jesuit presence in 17th - 18th century China, and disentangles the complex mutual interrelationship between the various items of this corpus. Moreover, by investigating handwritten dedications and owner's marks, material indications and external testimonia, Golvers sketches the history of the shipments of these documents to Europe, connecting them to the late 1670s, to Ph. Couplet's European 'tour' (1683 - 1692) and to the presence of A. Thomas, S.J. in Peking (late-1685 - 1709).

Behind all these shipments, there is the personal effort of F. Verbiest, and his own handwriting can be recognized in many pieces. After his death, also the French and German Jesuits in Peking continued this diffusion process, albeit to a lesser extent, in their relations with France, the German countries, and St. Petersburg. In the last part of this monograph, several cases are discussed which illustrate how in the 17th - 18th centuries European scholars 'received' these documents, for their astronomical, sinological, historical, linguistic or purely bibliophile aspect. In this part of the inquiry, unknown aspects of the history of many early Chinese collections in Europe are discussed. All in all, this research measures, for the first time, the penetration of Jesuit publications on China in contemporary Europe in quantitative and geographical-historical terms. It also traces the different motivations of these dispatches (i.e. public relations, apology for the particular evangelization methods; offering bibliophile curios in return for support).

This abundantly illustrated publication represents not only a substantial contribution to this history of the Jesuit mission in China and the methods applied, but is also an advancement in our knowledge of the history of western astronomy in East Asia, and of the Sino-Jesuit printed materials preserved in European collections.

                                  Book Description

Forest Ecology uses an ecosystem approach to understanding the ecology of forests. It examines the form and function of forest ecosystems and how they change over time in response to natural and human-caused disturbances. A complete treatment of the ecosystem including all the major structural components and functional processes of the forest ecosystem. This book examines forest ecology in the context of sustainable development and population growth. Gives equal emphasis to ecosystem function, the physical environment, the biotic processes (population and community ecology) and ecosystem change overtime.

If there's any doubt about John Feinstein being one of sport's true believers, The Last Amateurs readily dispels it. After years of smartly dissecting our games at their highest levels in bestsellers like The Majors, A Good Walk Spoiled, and A Season on the Brink, he returns to dissecting our games at their purest level, ground he first staked out quite stirringly in A Civil War, his chronicle of Army-Navy football.

In The Last Amateurs, he mines the 1999-2000 season of Patriot League basketball. Given the high-stakes, high-profile, and often dirty world of college hoops these days, Feinstein comes up with a remarkably refreshing place to visit, a sporting environment short on scandals, prima donnas, and sneaker contracts, but long on a pure passion for the game that complements achievement in the classroom. In the league's seven schools--Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, Colgate, Holy Cross, Army, and Navy--academics come first, the hardwood second. These are campuses populated by students who happen to be athletes, not athletes stopping off on the way to lucrative careers in professional sports. Indeed, these are young athletes who have their post-college focus on the rest of their lives, not the NBA. Sports, for them, builds character, not bank accounts.

Still, the Patriot League is a Division I conference, with its champion earning an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. It takes the games seriously--often, as Feinstein reveals, heartbreakingly so--even if it doesn't necessarily play to ACC, SEC, Big 10, and Pac-10 standards. Feinstein's interviewing, skillful as ever, brings the players, coaches, and administrators of the colleges in this league to full form, making The Last Amateurs a rarity among sports books--a smart volume about smart people with their heads and priorities pointed in the right direction. Like the conference itself, it's in a league of its own. --Jeff Silverman

5 out of 5 stars A Tale With an Emotional Resonance for College Hoops Fans.......2006-12-09

I generally enjoy Feinstein's writings and his commentary. 'The Last Amateurs' is Feinstein's best work. Following his standard procedure, Feinstein gets inside access to the teams of the Patriot League, an east coast league of mostly small private colleges. At the time the schools did not offer athletic scholarships. The players played because they wanted to keep playing competitive hoops and they were all required to be real students.

These games are played in small arenas far way from the glare of the big time spotlight. Nonetheless, these players and coaches passionately want to win. The big dream is to make the NCAA post-season tournament. The conference torunament championship that determines which team goes to the the Big Dance is one of the great sporting events on the modern scene.

With very few exceptions, none of these players have the slightest chance of making the NBA. For the coaches, things are a little different because coaching college hoops is their career and they are looking to move up.

Feinstein does a great job of taking the reader behind the scenes. In a way, these players and games are the ideal of amateur competition that has a deep emotional resonance for many fans - and therein lies a danger that too much exposure will ruin the very thing that makes the league attractive.

Highly recommended for college sports fans.

                                      2 out of 5 stars Lehigh Alum.......2006-03-21

I bought this book since I went to Lehigh and thought it would be extra interesting because of my background and because I played soccer and ice hockey at college. What a let-down!
I found the game by game annayasis drawn out and boring. About the only thing I can recommend to you from the book is the "amaterism" ( if there is such a word) of college sports at Lehigh and the great majority of other colleges in the US that we do not read or hear about on a daily basis.

I see you can purchase a used copy on Amazon for $0.99 - so what the hell - for a buck it's worth it I guess.

2 out of 5 stars Okay, but way too long.......2005-05-19

I agree with other reviewers who said that Feinstein would've been better off following one team instead of all of them. This could also chop the length down to a more reasonable amount. There's just too much going on to remember everything. I didn't even finish the book because it just took too long to get to the end and it didn't seem like the end would ever come. Feinstein could've told this story in about 250 pages instead of almost twice that. Not terrible, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it.

3 out of 5 stars not his best, but a fun read.......2005-01-08

Just finished this book last night, spent nearly 4 months on it. It really takes a lot of work to get into it, but as the season winds down and you get to know the players and coaches a bit better, it takes on a life of its own. So, that's to say the last 150 pages or so are worth the time. Problem is, you need to read the first 250 to have a good idea what is going on.

The message, as always with Feinsteid, is clear. College b-ball ain't what it should be. But as someone coming from a D3 school, I've know this for a long time.

4 out of 5 stars One shinning moment.......2004-12-10

ESPN exploded college basketball in the 1980's. Every night there is a game being televised on their network. Triple-headers have become the norm. And when a viewer hasn't had enough after the late game, on comes the late-late game between Hawaii and some other WCC team.

In "The Last Amateurs: Playing for Glory and Honor in Division I College Basketball" John Feinstien follows the teams and players of the Patriot League (then a non-scholarship conference). The players he meets are nameless and their schools are footnotes in big-time Division I athletics. But their stories are engaging and their pursuit of athletic and academic achievement is inspiring.

Feinstien tackles the notion of why these players, most of whom are paying their way through college, spend so much energy playing college basketball. Patriot League players have little aspiration of making basketball their livelihood, yet make the same physical sacrifice as big-time players all the while not allowing their academic endeavors to slip in the process.

The Patriot League is hardly ever on ESPN. The ultimate pursuit of every program is to win the league title so they can become the 15th or 16th seed in the NCAA tournament. And be the sacrificial lamb of a major college basketball program in the first round.

To people not involved in athletics, it is difficult to understand the purpose of it all. After reading "The Last Amateurs: Playing for Glory and Honor in Division I College Basketball", those outsiders should begin to get a glimpse into why athletics fosters greatness off the court.

It is noble to fight through adversity when there is no tangible reward at the end. Patriot Leaguers know this notion better than anyone in college basketball...and are better for it.

When Jamie saw him throw the baby, saw Van throw the little baby, saw Van throw his little sister Nin, then they moved.

So begins one of the most compelling novels for young readers published in recent memory. It is a story of survival—how nine-year-old Jamie, his mother, and his baby sister Nin leave an abusive situation, move to a small trailer in the woods, and slowly learn how to trust the people around them—and each other.

4 out of 5 stars This is a Good Book.......2006-12-04

This book theme is very storg it is about child abuse. It talks about an incident that changed a third grade boy's life. His mother who took care of him was under stress and finacial problems, so she always shout's at her son to realeas her anger. I liked how the author decribed the feeling of characters in the story. The author repeated phrase to create the nevousness feeling. The author also includes lessons about life in the story that I think is very intresting. For example, always count on yourself and don't count others.

I think this book has stong emotions and the author is able to pick the right words to express each character and by sometimes reapting a few phrase it can surley express what the character feeling.

4 out of 5 stars what jamie saw.......2006-03-30

what jamie saw was a book that made me realize that nobody is perfect and even if a person makes a mistakes there are eventually going to learn from them. the way that van threw jamie in the air in the beginnig of the story made the the story intereesting to read the book talks about people in general is very interesting. no ones the same and everyone have a different point of view of there life. i also have learned that all not adults are the same and they don't act responsible thety make mistakes like any other human being they all have done something wrong in the past and will continue to make mistakes till the day that they die.it tayght me that i should stand for what i believe and there is nothing wrong with that.
the character that i mostly admire is jamie because he reminds me of my personal life and that is because he has gone through the divorce of his family just like me. the character that i mostly dislike is van because he is so violent because she therw nim in the air and a person like that i shall call child abuser. and well i don't appreciate people like that.ruby facundo is a little brat.and thats how my story ended.
