          Book Description

In 1992 a Concerted Action Programme (CAP) was initiated by Peter Sijmons with the purpose of intensifying collaborations between 16 European laboratories working on plant-parasitic nematodes. The four-year programme entitled `Resistance mechanisms against plant-parasitic nematodes' focused on molecular aspects of the interaction between sedentary nematodes and plants on the model system Arabidopsis and on novel resistance strategies. Funding was provided mainly for exchange visits between collaborating laboratories and for the organization of annual meetings. During the last annual meeting which was held in May 1996 in Toledo, Spain, Carmen Fenoll initiated the production of this volume. The book presents a series of up-to-date reviews, each written by one of the participating laboratories, which include the scientific progress achieved in the frame of this CAP but are by no means limited in scope to this work.

                Description:
To test a hypothesis that the effects of defoliation on plant ecophysiology and soil organisms depend on the timing of defoliation within a growing season, we established a greenhouse experiment using replicated grassland microcosms. Each microcosms was composed of three plant species, Trifolium repens, Plantago lanceolata and Phleum pratense, growing in grassland soil with a diverse soil community. The experiment consisted of two treatment factors-defoliation and plant growth phase (PGP)-in a fully factorial design. Defoliation had two categories, i.e. no trimming or trimming a total of four times at 2 week intervals. The PGP treatment had four categories, i.e. 1, 3, 7 or 13 weeks growth following planting before the first defoliation (subsequently referred to as PGP1, PGP2, PGP3 and PGP4, respectively). In each PGP treatment category, microcosms were harvested 1 week after the final defoliation. Harvested shoot and root mass and total shoot production (including trimmed and harvested shoot mass) increased with time and were lower in defoliated than in non-defoliated systems. The fraction of root biomass of harvested plant biomass decreased with time but was increased by defoliation at PGP3 and PGP4. The proportion of T. repens in total shoot production increased and those of P. lanceolata and P. pratense decreased with time. Defoliation increased the proportions of P. lanceolata and P. pratense in total shoot production at PGP3 and PGP4. Root N and C concentrations increased and root C-to-N ratio decreased with time in non-defoliated systems. Defoliation increased root N concentration by 38 and 33% at PGP1 and PGP2, respectively, but decreased the concentration by 22% at PGP4. In contrast, defoliation reduced root C concentration on average by 1.5% at each PGP. As with the effects on root N concentration, defoliation decreased the root C-to-N ratio at PGP1 and PGP2 but increased the ratio at PGP4. Among soil animal trophic groups, the abundance of herbivorous nematodes was higher at PGP4 than at PGP1-3 and that of predacious nematodes higher at PGP2-4 than at PGP1, while the abundance of bacterivorous, fungivorous and omnivorous nematodes and that of detritivorous enchytraeids did not differ between the PGP categories. Among bacterivorous nematodes, however, Acrobeloides, Chiloplacus and Protorhabditis species decreased and that of Plectus spp. increased with time. Defoliation did not affect the abundance of soil animal trophic groups, but reduced the abundance of herbivorous Coslenchus spp. at each PGP and raised the abundance of herbivorous Rotylenchus spp. and bacterivorous Eucephalobus spp. at PGP4. Confirming our hypothesis, the results suggest that the effects of defoliation on the attributes of grassland plants, such as biomass allocation between roots and shoots and root quality, may depend on the timing of defoliation within a growing season. However, contradicting our hypothesis, the results suggest that significant changes in plant attributes after defoliation may not always lead to substantial changes in the abundance of belowground organisms.

                  Description:
Two nematode species (Cruznema tripartitum and Acrobeloides bodenheimeri) were selected to test the hypotheses that bacterial-feeding nematodes affect bacterial biomass and activity and that this feedback effect varies with nematode species and population size. For each species, nematodes of three initial population sizes were inoculated onto bacterial colonies in separate microcosms. Nematode population, bacterial biomass and CO"2 production were monitored in parallel microcosm settings. The responses of bacterial biomass to nematode species were different. Bacterial biomass increased significantly on d 8 in the presence of Acrobeloides when its initial numbers were 20 and 100 per microcosm; and bacterial biomass increased significantly on d 4 in the presence of Cruznema when its initial numbers were 5 and 20 per microcosm. Daily CO"2 production of the microcosms with initial population sizes of 5, 20 and 100 Cruznema or of 5 and 100 Acrobeloides was significantly greater than that in microcosms without nematodes. However, the CO"2 production of the microcosms with initial population of 20 Acrobeloides was not significantly different from that of the microcosms without nematodes. The increase in daily CO"2 production per microcosm by Cruznema was generally greater than that by Acrobeloides for the first few days of the experiment. Nevertheless, the increase in daily CO"2 production by an individual nematode was similar for both species and was a decreasing function of the initial nematode numbers. The feedback effect of each nematode species on its bacterial prey was estimated by fitting both bacterial biomass and CO"2 production data to a model. Model outputs demonstrated that the feedback effect of Cruznema on bacteria was greater than that of Acrobeloides during the course of the experiment and the feedback effect of each species was not linearly correlated to initial nematode population sizes. Cruznema increased bacterial biomass and activity by a factor of 3.75-4.55 over the first 4 d, while Acrobeloides increased it by a factor between 1.97 and 3.40.

                    Description:
The assemblages of microbial (bacteria and fungi), microfaunal (protozoa and nematodes) and mesofaunal (microarthropods) populations were studied in decomposing root residues from hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) and rye (Secale cereale L.) in a litterbag field experiment. Litterbags containing vetch or rye root residues were buried in soil at the same day as either vetch or rye winter catch crops were incorporated into the field soil from which the materials were gathered. The litterbags were sampled after 6 weeks in the field. In vetch, bacterial and fungal biomasses were similar whereas fungi dominated microbial biomass in rye. The biomass of the bacterial consuming fauna dominated by nematodes and microarthropods was similar to the biomass of bacteria in vetch as opposed to in rye where bacterivore biomass was lower than bacterial biomass. This suggests a much higher bacterial production in vetch compared to rye. Furthermore, in vetch dauer larvae of bacteria feeding nematodes prevailed, which is also a sign of high bacterial production followed by food shortage for the bacterivores. Bacterivorous and predatory nematodes with capability of consuming protozoa showed an inverse relationship to flagellated protozoa. This suggests that these nematodes controlled the protozoan biomass constituting a lower fraction of the bacterivore biomass in vetch compared to in rye. Such intraguild predator-prey relationship is therefore indicated for microbivorous organisms among bacterivorous and predatory nematodes (the intraguild predator) protozoa (the intraguild prey) and bacteria (the common prey). The much higher fungal biomass in rye than in vetch litterbags was not reflected in the biomass of the fungal feeders. Due to the generally lower intrinsic rate of increase of the fungivores, as well as of the omnivores and predators, in comparison with the bacterial feeders, they were not able to generate dense populations at this early stage of decomposition.

                      Description:
The linkages between plants and soil biota are both important and complex, involving both positive and negative feedbacks between soil organisms and their physical environment. An experiment was established in an upland grassland system to investigate the impact of addition of nitrogen and lime (NL) fertiliser on plant communities and the soil biota. The NL treatment increased above ground plant biomass and accelerated root returns to the soil, providing increased plant-derived energy for the soil food web. No changes were seen in fungal biomass, as indicated by PLFA, but bacterial biomass was reduced. However, the numbers of bacterial feeding and predatory nematodes increased in the NL treatment and may be masking the effects at the lower trophic levels, indicating top-down control mechanisms. Although the NL treatment changed nematode community structure, there was an overall depression in the abundance of nematodes. This decrease was likely to be related to soil moisture content, which was reduced significantly in the NL treatment by increased evapotranspiration due to the larger above ground biomass production. This study highlights the strong bottom-up control over the soil dwelling nematodes both in terms of driving changes in diversity and in modifying the soil physical environment.

                        Description:
A screenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of inoculation with Meloidogyne javanica (uninoculated nematode control, low level [1000 eggs pot^-^1] and high level [10,000 eggs pot^-^1]) and rhizobial strains (uninoculated rhizobial control, strains KFR 647 and MBS1312) on nematode infection, nodulation and growth of Sesbania sesban (L.) Merr. (sesbania) provenances (Kisii and Kakamega). Heavy nematode infection of sesbania was noted for all three rhizobial inoculation treatments 2 months after sowing, and nodulation and plant growth were affected negatively at the high nematode inoculum level. Shoot dry weights showed negative and positive relationships with nematode infection (gall index) and number of effective rhizobium nodules, respectively. At 3 months, negative effects of the high nematode inoculum level on nodulation and plant growth were observed for rhizobial strain KFR 647 and the uninoculated control, but not for strain MBS 1312. Low nematode inoculum levels did not negatively affect nodulation or plant growth. The two sesbania provenances had similar growth at the high nematode inoculum level, but the Kisii provenance showed better growth than the Kakamega provenance at the low nematode inoculum level.

                          Description:
The carrying capacity for microflora and nematofauna was manipulated (using a bactericide, a fungicide, manure or a growing millet plant) in a poor tropical soil, in order to identify relationships between the soil microbes and nematodes and to assess the influences of these organisms on nitrogen flux. The experiment was conducted for 4 months in containers under greenhouse conditions, with analyses of soil, nematofauna and microbial characteristics at regular intervals. Manure input and initial bactericide application led to a significant increase in bacterial-feeding and fungal-feeding nematodes of coloniser-persister classes 1 and 2, respectively, whereas high manure input stimulated omnivorous nematodes (i.e. Microdorylaimus rapsus) which became the dominant trophic group. Changes in abundance of the different bacterial-feeding nematode taxa between treatments seemed to be more related to changes in the structure of the microbial communities than to the total amount of micro-organisms, as suggested by the RISA fingerprint analysis of the bacterial communities. Canonical analysis of nematode feeding guilds, combined with soil microbial and mineral nitrogen parameters as well as multiple regression showed that the bacterial-feeding nematodes influenced the inorganic N content in the soil whereas microbial biomass was determined by total nematode abundance and not by any specific trophic group.

This book is an introduction to small-scale turkey farming. It is geared to the backyard farmer or older 4H student who has never raised turkeys before. It begins with a description of housing needs for turkeys, which includes building plans for a poultry house and sun porch. It describes poults, brooding, and flock management. The book includes plans for a variety of equipment, such as homemade feeders, waterers, and incubators. There are chapters on breeding, health, killing and processing, and preserving and cooking, as well as a small collection of recipes. At the back of the book is a glossary, a list of references, a list of state extension departments, a list of suppliers, and a list of diagnostic laboratories.

The text is written for readers who have some animal sense and some basic experience with building things by hand. Technical terms and processes are explained both in the text and with diagrams. All in all, it is a clear introduction and should prove useful to the beginning turkey farmer.

I have many, many books about guns, and this is without a doubt the BEST one that I have ever owned. The illustrations are superb, and Mr. Taffin's style of writing makes you think he is talking to you. I highly recommend this book for anyone that loves the single action revolver, but I have to warn you, it will make you want more and more guns!

This is a very attractive volume. The abundant color photographs seem to stand out from the page and GLOW.
The book itself is a very comprehensive exploration of the single action revolvers of history and those of the present day. From mainstream to the esoteric, the material in this book will contribute to the education of anybody with an interest in single action revolvers. There is much detailed information for the novice and a wealth of practical data for those already well steeped in the subject.

I want to apologize for what's going to be a short review, but I want to get back to this terrific book.

I've been a big fan of John Taffin's writing for years now. No other gunwriter carries the banner of classic gunwriting the way he does. I've owned BIG BORE HANDGUNS and BIG BORE SIXGUNS for some time now, and I've had the good fortune to meet Mr. Taffin online at the Sixgunner.com forums. These two were among my favorite books - I could always pick them up and open them at random and just lose myself in the great writing and photographs. But when this book (SINGLE ACTION SIXGUNS) was announced, I was skeptical - what else could JT even SAY on the subject?

Well, a lot, it turns out. And Mr. Taffin doesn't just repeat himself from the other books or from his Guns/American Handgunner articles. This is new stuff, with new photos (TONS of them - better than ever, and in ALL color). There are 336 pages of great info (and COLOR photos - excellent, sharp photos) on all sorts of things, ranging from old original models to modern single-action sixguns, to mini-SAs, to replicas, customs, grips, tips, hunting, leather and - of course - John's ongoing search for the perfect packing gun. This is John Taffin's best book so far!

Now, please bear in mind that I'm not all that huge a single-action revolver fan. I've owned a few (only have one right now), but I'm MUCH more into double-action revos and even semiautomatics. This book, though, has completely captivated me. I'm so glad I bought it (and, by the way, Amazon has a great price compared to what I've seen at the local bookstore).

If you're a gun guy or you're thinking about buying a gift for one, look no further and BUY THIS GREAT BOOK!

This book outlines an excellent journey from Istanbul to Cairo, with all the detail and information we expect from Lonely Planet. The only problem emerges if you want to take a different route than the one they've outlined. They make hardly any allowance for this possibility, and this is the book's fatal flaw. Use it as a suggestion book, as a guide; but consider buying a guide to the Middle East instead, and thus providing yourself with much more information on the places between Istanbul and Cairo, places you may want to visit even though they're "off the beaten track." For instance, with more information I chose to go South through Jordan, ferry to Egypt, and then go back North into Israel, ending in Jerusalem. This made sites such as Petra in Jordan and St. Anthony's Monastery in Egypt fit nicely on the itinerary, and for me ending in Jerusalem provided a more fitting climax. No one trip can fit everyone. Whatever your desires, consider a guidebook that presents more options. Make sure you include Istanbul, Ephesus, Damascus, Baalbek, Beirut, Petra, Jerusalem, Cairo. Strongly consider Nazareth, Haifa, Luxor, and Mt. Sinai. Have fun!

I used this book for Israel and Jordan. I liked the layout and found it useful. The entries for each country are basically abbreviated versions of Lonely Planet's single-country books. Instead of giving it five starts, I'm giving it only four because I usually found the city maps to be deplorable. These maps are more like sketches than real maps. The main problem is that all the city streets are not on the maps, and the steets that are there often don't have their names. This makes it impossible to orient oneself when lost, and it is very difficult to find something marked on a steet that has no name on the map and located amidst other streets that aren't on the map. I realized I was not alone in this appraisal when I went to the tourist information office in Eilat, Israel. I asked where a bicycle shop was and asked the man to show me where it was on Lonely Planet's map. He glanced at the map and had obviously seen it before because he gave a disgusted grunt and brushed the book aside saying, "That's not a map," and proceeded to give me verbal directions.

4 out of 5 stars Travelling from Istanbul to Cairo.......2001-03-27

I have backpacked in this area extensively. Most of the guides I have used in the past weren't really that useful. I was therefore really surprised by this guide. I found it useful in Turkey, Jordan and Eygpt - detailing all the major sites (relatively in depth for a guide this length) and finding cheap guesthouses. It wasn't, however, very helpful in getting around - for example - the "travel agencies" recommended in Istanbul beyond being run by westerners for backpackers were much more expensive than any of the other local agencies. However, as I've never lived in any of those countries I can't really give a proper opinion beyond saying I personally found the guide helpful. On Israel it's a different matter - and I can only say well done to the writers - I didn't know you could find such cheap guesthouses in Israel, and I've travelled around the country quite a bit. I still use this guide when I travel here which says alot - especially seeing as I only bought the guide for its coverage of the neighbouring countries. As usual, Lonely Planet have attacked this project with vigour and research and produced a comprehensive guide to the Middle East. However, as is the problem with the "Shoestring" editions, a vast amount has to be left out, an enormous of amount of information must be precised in order to produce a managable, helpful guide for a region. Local knowledge of an area is vital to ensure that the correct points, places of interest and general information are included. Unfortunately, LP have hit slightly wide of the mark with this region. It is an area which is full of history and a culture that is very sensitive to the western ideals and my advice would be to purchase each country's book separately. Whilst this is a more expensive and even bulky alternative, simply sell, swap or send home the discarded books.

I understand that LP are in the process of producing further separate guides thus breaking down this region again, which will be excellent. The guide itself, however, is a good read though!

                              5 out of 5 stars A wonderful read.......2007-07-19

I got this book years ago and I still pick it up today and enjoy reading. A wonderful tale of love and adventure and show that just because something is big and unusual it does not mean it is evil. Humans can be just as bad if not worse.

4 out of 5 stars A great story about dragons.......2007-06-21

I am a big fan of Anne McCaffrey and her Dragonriders of Pern, and am in a constant quest to find similar good books about dragons. Ofcourse no one can write them like McCaffrey, but Kerner does an excellent job, her dragons are quite likable. I absolutely loved the beginning of this book, it has a great start. I enjoyed all the characters and learning about this world and its inhabitants. I admit I wasn't sure I liked the relationship that developed between Lanen and Akor, but eventually got used it. And the surrounding story was good enough to keep me interested and wanting to continue reading the story. This is a great start to a new trilogy (perhaps a series?). It will definately make you want to continue the story in the next book.

4 out of 5 stars Abridged version by accident.......2007-02-09

I bought the ubridged version by accident, certainly did not mean to. How ever, it was not so bad. Since I haven't read the original unabridged book, I cannot say whether the book benefited from the compacting. :-) Anyway, the story was good, and if you like dragon fantacy, you'll propably like this book. It was entertaining and did not just repeat something that has been written a hundred times already.

                              5 out of 5 stars A GREAT READ.......2006-10-11

This story is one of the best I have read in a long time. Elizabeth Kerners style is unique and her ability to decribe is fantastic. I think what I liked best was that her main character Lanen was not the prettiest or even the smartest character but that she was strong and followed her beliefs. I found the romance between Akhor and Lanen refreshing. It was not the steriotypical "love at first sight" non sense someone described below. Also yes they did have an interspecies romance but if you go on to read the second and third book in this series Akhor gets changed back into a dragon!! So all the problems don't just dissapear. Anyway like I said its a great read. You won't get much sleep though so if you pick this book up don't expect to put it down till you finish.

                              4 out of 5 stars Better than I anticipated........2006-03-17

I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. After letting it collect some dust on my "to read" shelf for a couple of months, where it didn't look too thrilling and I must admit that a number of other books skipped ahead of it in the queue, I finally picked it up for a long plane ride. Unfortunately for me, I found myself pretty much engrossed right from the beginining and didn't get any of the sleep I was hoping for on that trip.

The characters are engaging and the plot is unique and exciting. I liked the naivety and innocence of Lanen, full of confidence in her ability to overcome any obstacle that the world might throw in her path, and determination to reach her goal of visiting and communicating with the dragons. In the begining of the tale she is completely unaware of the dark and dangerous forces searching for her, or of the impact that her destiny may have on the world. Other characters were also very well formed, although without much shades of grey (good or evil, but not in between).

When I realized that the whole book would be told in the first person, I didn't think that I would enjoy it. However, I found that I wasn't bothered by it in the least, and that it actually enhanced parts of the story by allowing the author to reveal intimate details of key characters that helped flesh out and give feeling to some of the dragons and the villians. I actually thought that the writing style was top notch and was especially impressed because this was the first of Kerner's books.

I really look forward to reading the others in the series, and can pretty much guarentee that they won't spend much time on the "to read" shelf.
