In the modern economy, organizations that compete for the best people must learn to design reward systems that drive performance. The author argues that in today's marketplace, more and more companies are seeing employee benefits not as an expense, but as a tool for achieving particular goals. Tom Wilson's new book is even better than his last, which I found to be one of the best reward systems books written. Rewards that Drive High Performance is a rich and easy reading collection of case studies from some of the country's leading organizations, including Amazon.com, Starbucks, Genzyme and many others. It is a book that I, as a manager, found to be very practical -- a compensation "text" for line managers because it shows what works and why, not just theory.
I really liked the way the cases were grouped, because it shows that reward systems need to be defined differently for different applications and company cultures. Best practices are useful to study, but Wilson's book goes beyond this to show how and why the best companies do what they do and align their reward systems with their business objectives.
It's refreshing to see a book from a leading consultant not geared to "provide just enough" to entice the reader to want to know more -- this book truly tells the whole story, and does it in a way that proves to be a compelling read.

The global climate of the Earth has significantly varied over the last Millennia. On a regional scale, the climate has varied and does presently vary on many different time scales, leading to a continuously changing pattern of temperatures, humidity, precipitation, with important effects on the whole terrestrial biosphere. Physicist are interested in understanding the mechanism at work by gathering data and properly analysing them, by building theoretical models and, if possible, making predictions on the future evolution of the system. Along these lines, an important question is to understand the role of the solar forcing, in order to unravel the internal mechanisms of variability of the Earth's climate from the variable forcing of the Sun. On the other hand, one can learn about the past solar variability by reading into the terrestrial archives that provide us with proxy data on the history of both the Sun and the climate. Thus, realizing that the Sun and the Earth from a closely coupled system, where the variable properties of the former may affect in many subtle ways the behaviour of the latter, is an important step toward the understanding of both. This book is explicitly devoted to these issues. First, it is important to obtain reliable data from terrestrial archives, and to properly date the records that have been measured. The first part of the book is devoted to these crucial aspects, dealing with various types of proxy data and with the difficult issue of the dating of the records. Once obtained the data, it has to be interpreted. this goal is nowadays relying upon a plethora of data analysis methods, that explicitly take into account the nonlinear nature of the system and try to elucidate the dynamics and the main processes active in the measured system. The second part of the book is devoted to the issue of data analysis and prediction. Finally, once interpreted and analyzed the data, theoretical models have to be build describing the dynamics of the system considered. Due to the extreme complexity of the Sun/Earth system (as well as of its components, the Sun itself and the Earth's climate), drastic simplifications in the modelling efforts have to be accepted and one has to bear in mind that the models probably are nothing more than a pale image of the real dynamics. The third part of the book is devoted to the theoretical and numerical modelling of the solar and climatic variability, and of their complex interactions. This volume gives an up-to-date view of the present state of this field.

This book illustrates new developments in the fields of space and solar physics, stellar physics, extragalactic physics and cosmology. Great book to increase your grappling skills.......2007-09-09
This is another great book by Royce Gracie. Unlike some other books written by the Gracie family this book focuses on knowledge and technique to be good at grappling and not just on strength. The book is full of hundreds of great techniques that really work quite well. I go to jujitsu class every day with a new technique and I keep frustrating my fellow classmates with my new knowledge. This book, and Royce's first book, are a must have for anyone that wants to increase their skill in grappling without having to hit the gym five days a week in the hopes of being strong enough to using some "fancy looking" move. On a scale of 10, I would give this book a 9.5!
Great encyclopedia of techniques.......2007-07-24
This book follows the pattern of the first volume. It is a great reference tool for the bottom position. About the second half of the book are moves from the guard while the first half is a mix of the other bottom positions. Its a great book!
Necessary Jiu-Jitsu.......2007-07-18
If you want to improve your jiu-jitsu game through the use of books, there are three you should read. The first is Ultimate Fighting Techniques Volume 1 - a book that details the basics such as clinching and fighting from the top. The second is Gracie Submission Essentials by Helio and Royler Gracie - a book that is completely focused on submissions from almost every imaginable position. The third is this book, and I have found it to be the most useful for improving my skills.
_Ultimate Fighting Techniques Volume 2: Fighting from the Bottom_ reveals what you should do when you are fighting from positions that are considered "disadvantaged" - that is, positions where your back is generally on the mat. If you intend to compete in a grappling tournament, you WILL find yourself in these positions eventually. The knowledge in this book could very well be the difference between you having to submit to an opponent and you being able to reverse positions and submit them. Do you know how to escape the side mount without being choked out or submitted via kimura? Can you break the mounted choke? Can you do a half-guard sweep? If the answer to any of these questions is NO, then you need to study this book.
This book contains 304 pages. All of the "disadvantaged" positions are covered in this book; however, the primary focus is on the back, mounted, side control, and guard positions. The techniques are broken down step-by-step and include numerous photographs to make learn them on your own relatively easy.
Note: While this book is titled _Ultimate Fighting Techniques_, it is primarily Gi-Brazilian Jiu-jitsu focused. Most of the techniques will translate to MMA/UFC-style fighting (and there are some MMA-specific techniques included), but that is not the focus of the work. For a more-specific MMA texts, try B.J. Penn's _Mixed Martial Arts: The Book of Knowledge_ or _Bas Rutten's Big Book of Combat_.
BJJ Guy.......2007-05-04
This book is extremely good. IMO it is even better than the first one. Definitely it is more advanced than Royler and Renzo's BJJ Theory and Technique, which is a good book and a complete guide of techniques. This book has a lot of stuff which other books are missing such as defenses and several options for each defense, which I find to be priceless. On the theory portion of the book, it is too brief and almost the same things as the first book, so there's nothing new to it, but regarding the techniques shown, they are excellent. The explanations are very clear and very articulated, something which is extremely important for anyone learning BJJ.

Royce Gracie is at his simplistic best,Teaching moves that are simple and will be remembered in the ring. Royce Gracie is the only man in octagon history to defeat 3 oppenents in one night 3times to win the first 3 out of 4 UFC Championships.
Plenty of pictures but very few submissions.......2006-11-29
This book will teach you a lot of very basic drills and ways to move from an offensive position to a stronger offensive position and in many cases teaches you how to defend those same advances. The book has very little about armbars, leg locks and figure 4 triangle leg chokes (although it does have a really cool one to use if you're already mounted past your opponents guard). You'll become efficient at understanding terms like guard, half guard, mount, back, side control and how to move from one position to a stronger using proven techniques. I give the book 5 stars because the techniques presented are well taught using pictures and easy to understand language. This book focuses mainly on techniques used to attack your opponent, today I'm ordering the second book of the series on ground game defense, after all, there's nobody better at defending a ground position than Royce.

The book Girl Reporter is one of the few best books that I have read. The story is mainly about two girls named Casey Smith and Megan O'connor fighting for the job of newspaper editor, belive me it is one BIG catfight. Meanwhile toxic waste is flowing into the Sussex river,and it is all coming from the River Head Paper Mill. Casey thinks this story would be one of the best stories to go on the front page in the newspaper,so she digs down deep into the story mabey too deep.

The main charactor-a stubborn, smart-alecky reporter-Casey Brown is slightly biased, but insightful enough. The book is fast paced and all together excellent. I've read most of the series-let me tell you, the endings are usually a big twist! A real page-turner.

Casey Smith is an excellent journalist. Now that she's in 6th grade and at a new school she knows she will write for the school newspaper. Only problem? There isn't one. How could there not be a school newspaper? She finally decides to ask if she can start one, but somebody's beaten her. Megan O' Connor. The perky pink 6th grader who cares about clothes and dances, not things that affect the world. Casey has to try and get along with Megan while investigating a big story about a paper company polluting the Sussex River. She also has to try to get people to vote for her for Editor or she will be stuck being bossed around by Megan all year.
This is an excellent book, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys journalism.

If only Linda's books were around when I was a kid. These are MUST reads for any kids who do not fit into the "jock/cheerleader" mold. Wait. Perhaps they need the books most of all. The Get Real series are filled with on topic social issues, issues children deal with daily as "outcasts" or "outsiders". Want someone you love to feel good who may be going through teenage anxiety angst? This is a must read for them.

It's so awesome! Buy it! But before you rush out to Barnes and Noble I better fill you in on the book. Casey Smith, girl reporter is on her way to greatness in the word of jornalisam. By the school newspaper! When Casey find out there is NO newspaper, cancelled in the 80's for lack of interest,she takes matters into her own hands. She decides to rebuild the newspaper! But Megan O'Connor, Princess of pink, beats her to the punch. Read on as Casey and Megan battle for the position of editor, and manage to put together a staff. In the meantime, Casey is working on her story for the newspaper, about how Riverhead Paper Mill is polluting the Sussex River. She goes through amazing adventures as she pulls together her story. When she finds out that the toxic in the river thats dumped from the paper mill is above legal limits, She busts Riverhead by means of front page story on Real News, the schools newspaper. That is IF she can manage to pull together her story, win the electoin for editor, AND someday win the Pulitzer, the highest honor in jornalisam. Sound like a lot of work for an eleven year old girl????? Get Real.
