The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Of the numerous variables that impact the outcome of irregular warfare operations, leadership is one of me most critical. Irregular operations require decentralization and the freedom of the local commander to create local solutions to the situations that he faces. These local solutions can have a dramatic and positive effect on the outcome of irregular military operations. A review of cases that span a century of US irregular warfare operations provides evidence that, at times, the military hierarchy did allow subordinates to innovate and did listen to their recommendations, with positive outcomes as a result. This evidence also illustrates, however, that the military has failed to institutionalize these lessons and is prone to have to re-learn them from conflict to conflict, and at times this relearning process has resulted in the failure of an operation. Leaders must ensure that innovation and feedback are a part of the conduct of irregular warfare operations. This thesis will illustrate that the doctrine and culture of the United States military does not provide for the systematic analysis and exploitation of subordinate innovation. The purpose of this thesis is to clearly articulate the important role that innovation and feedback from subordinates can have on the outcome of operations. The cases put forth to illustrate these points are the Philippines (1898-1902), Vietnam, and El Salvador. The goal is to draw conclusions and make recommendations on how the US military might better capture and utilize subordinate feedback and innovation in future operations.

Disappointed With the Tennis Ball Machine Drills.......2005-10-04

When I bought this book I was hopeful that the chapter on the Ball Machine drills would help me to use my new ball machine more efficiently. I was disappointed by the fact that the chapter was geared for more than one player and the machine, rather than just one player and the machine. I believe that most of the drills can be revised so that they work with just one player, but it didn't really contain what I was looking for. I didn't feel there was that much value added to when I go out with the machine before reading this book.

While I agree with the other reviewer who said that the drills were tailored to a clinic setting, I have found that many of the drills can easily be adapted to as few as two people. The value in the book is in learning the concepts that each drill is meant to teach. If you need work on a particular part of your game, there is most likely a drill that can help you.

The book explains each drill in text and with a clear diagram of how the drill should be conducted (where players should be positioned, where the balls should be hit). The text portion also gives variations on the drill that can be used depending on the skill level of the players. It gives suggestions on how to make it easier for less advanced players, and suggestions for making it more challenging for more advanced players.

I teach clinics, so it's obviously a good reference for me to keep my clinics fresh, but I also refer to it for my own practice with my mixed doubles partner.

The overall content of the book is excellent, but having read through most of the drills, I've found portions where the editing fell short. There were a couple of drills where the text portion didn't match the diagram, and it looked like the description was for a different drill. But overall, the information in this book is extremely useful. Of all the tennis books I have, this is the one to which I refer the most.

This book is a comprehensive, easy-to-read list of drills for all levels. The pictures and clear directions simplify my coaching and serve as an invaluable resource on the fly! Buy this book if you don't have oodles of extra time to read fluffy descriptions and just need creative basic drill ideas to serve as a backbone for your practices.

Many drills for the clinic setting.......1998-10-23

I purchased this book in hopes of finding a tome filled with quality tennis drills for two people or a player and coach. The drills in this book are, however, arranged for more than two people such as one would find in a tennis clinic setting. Nonetheless, the drills seemed fine and there were several for each stroke.

You Just Can't Get Lost With This One..........1998-11-10

Swaney's guide to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Namibia is the best on the bookstore shelf. The level of detail is superb, from major cities to rural villages. She should consider herself more a regional geographer, as her detail concerning things like history, climate, people, and place are akin to that of one! All this and she manages to fit in the best deals on lodging, food, and travel sites, not to mention important info concerning safety and hazards associated with travel. I used this book extensively during my travels throughout last year, when I lived in Windhoek. Indeed, you can find no better than this- and the information is as good or better than what the locals give! I once had the opportunity to meet her at a hostel in Windhoek, when I was doing some academic research there, and never had the chance to tell her how much I praise this guide!

Heather Chambers discovered her 16th summer would be anything but usual. Coping with the ultimate betrayal of a friend, a heartthrob who didn't know she existed and a new despicable fiancé of her mother. However, not all was lost when she and her loyal grey gelding, Possum, befriended a new neighbor, Mr. Kevin Quinn.

Against all warnings from her mother and friends, she continued her friendship with Mr. Quinn and discovered he was not what others perceived him to be. In fact, he not only was the opposite of their fears, but he took her and Possum to a place she never dared to dreamed.

With his encouragement and skills, Heather not only learned how to jump with Possum but found herself entered at the Utah State Fair Maiden Jumpers Competition. In the end, she found more than just a wining ribbon.

A delightful book containing all the key elements to entertain and hold the reader's attention to the very end. I applaud Betty Briggs and look forward to book number two of this trilogy.

For Youth and Adults.......2004-11-14

Quality Concealed is a novel for both youth and adults readers. Betty Briggs weaves a great story between all the characters. She had me despising some characters in the beginning, but liking and understanding them in the end. The reader struggles along with Heather as she tries to train her horse and through her trials with the cute David. The fights between Heather and Sheila are common between teen girls, allowing the youth readers to connect with the characters. The Heather series is a good addition to any home library.

Quality Concealed by Betty Briggs is the engaging a story written for young adult readers features a sixteen-year-old girl whose plain, ordinary gelding can't quite match the exotic Thoroughbred of her best friend, and who must juggle school and equine obligations with her growing interest in a handsome young fellow student. When a neighbor of uncertain motives moves next door, events spiral toward a jumping contest and a deep rift between friends. An appropriate addition for school and community library YA collections, Quality Concealed is a wonderfully written, gentle, thoughtful, adventurous yet poignant story especially recommended for pre-teen and teenage girls.

A book for teen horselovers!.......2002-01-23

Quality Concealed is a fabulous book about a girl who recently lost her father. Heather Chamber's part-draft gelding,Possum, is discovered to have jumping ability by her neighbor after jumping his four foot fence. Sheila, Heathers ex-friend, snuggles up with Heather's long time crush, David while Heather schools Possum with her strange neighbor, Mr. Quinn. A thrilling and warming book about love and passion for a boy and a horse.:o)

"Can't Put It Down" type of book.......2000-12-03

This book is great for all ages. Even as an adult, I found it captivating. Ms Briggs writes with detail that shows she knows about horses and their connection to people. It's nice to see a book that is true to life, that all ages can enjoy.
