Book Description
Issues surrounding executive compensation, employee benefits, and employment law are becoming increasingly important to nonprofits. And with the recent passage of intermediate sanctions, the government has signalled that they will be watching compensation and benefits of nonprofits very closely. This timely book fills the growing need by nonprofit executives for an accessible guide to legislation, case law, and IRS regulations.
Customer Reviews:
A Must-have Reference for U.S. Nonprofit Managers.......2001-06-10
One of the more daunting challenges for US nonprofit board members, officers, and senior staff is setting compensation and benefits for existing and prospective employees. They are faced with the challenges of navigating not only the "usual" employment-related laws that all employers face, but also those laws peculiar to the nonprofit sector.
There is also the related challenge of setting compensation levels and benefits high enough to compete for the most talented candidates, but not so high as to run afoul of the intermediate sanctions rules.
Unfortunately, there is no single book that I've found that combines both the legal and practical elements involved in such important decisions. However, I have found two books that, taken together, substantially cover the territory: Nonprofit Compensation, Benefits, and Employment Law, covering the legal aspects, and Nonprofit Compensation and Benefits Practices, covering compensation levels.
This review covers Nonprofit Compensation, Benefits, and Employment Law, a reference that focuses mostly on the legal aspects of employee compensation and benefits. It not only covers those laws unique to the nonprofit sector, but, thankfully, addresses workplace-related statutes of broader applicability such as workplace discrimination, sexual harassment, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and so on. It even covers 401(k) plans, which until recently were unavailable to nonprofit organizations.
Importantly, the book offers a solid treatment of the intermediate sanctions law -- a topic that is critical for these reasons:
--Board members, officers and other "managers" can be individually "fined" a 10% excise tax for participating in an excess benefit transaction. Voting on a compensation package that exceeds reasonable levels of compensation could give rise to such penalties.
--The employee who is over-compensated can be hit with 25% or, in some cases, 200% penalties.
While the book is comprehensive and well written, I would like to have seen model or sample employment agreements to help in drafting. Had it provided these samples, I would have given this a 5-star rating.

Book Description
This book discusses the association that exists between plants and their most important dietary component, nitrogen. The author combines ecological, physiological and biochemical approaches to provide the reader with an overall view of nitrogen in the biosphere and a specific view of nitrogen processing in plants. The processes which make up the nitrogen cycle, including mineralization, immobilization by microbes and nitrification, are discussed and the losses and gains of combined nitrogen from and to the cycle. The part which plants play in this cycling, by their processing of inorganic nitrogen into compounds which are required by plants and animals alike, and the chemistry and production of those compounds, is also covered. Transport of nitrogen compounds within the plant, and the fate of these compounds, is discussed. The final chapter considers the part which humans play in the cycling of nitrogen, with special reference to the nitrogen fertilizers used in agriculture.

Book Description
The turn of the millennium from the twentieth to the twenty-first century provides an occasion to review our understanding of a biological process, biological nitrogen fixation, that is of prime importance for the continued survival of mankind. This process has provided a basis for maintaining soil fertility since the beginning of organised agriculture, yet its very existence was confirmed only just over a century ago. In the intervening years, an enormous intellectual effort has dispersed much of the mystery surrounding biological nitrogen fixation. Biological fixation is widely exploited in agriculture, as are nitrogen fertilisers prepared for the last hundred years under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. However, despite all our efforts, the fundamental nature of the reactions involved at the heart of the biological process remain unknown.
This book aims to describe what we have learned in the last one hundred years or so about biological nitrogen fixation, about what its chemistry appears to be, and how it is applied in agriculture. This ambitious objective has not been attempted recently. It is aimed at students and those who wish to enter these very challenging areas of research, and who need to learn the state of the art at the turn of the millennium.
The authors are all acknowledged world experts in their fields. They have prepared concise, well referenced and authoritative accounts of their subjects. This book provides a unique summary of the current state of knowledge that will be indispensable to all students and researchers, actual and potential, interested in biological nitrogen fixation.

Customer Reviews:
Great for Beginners.......2007-09-06
Skip Morris breaks it down for beginners. He explains and has colored pictures of materials and tools. Also there is detailed (and colored) step by step for all the types of flies. If you are going to start tying flies, this book is a must have.
The best I've used thus far!.......2006-06-24
I am fairly new at tying my own flys. I own a couple of fly tying references and I am so much more impressed with Skip Morris' book "Fly Tying Made Clear And Simple." This is an outstanding choice for the novice. The biggest help, for me, has been Skip's methodical way of going through the process as he instructs on building each fly. He also describes solutions for the most common problems a novice will face and, best of all, the book lays flat on your fly tying bench due to it's spiral bound binding! I wish I would have started with this book!!
Excellent help for the beginning fly tyer.......2006-02-23
This an excellent book to use when you're starting out. Directions are clear, illustrations are helpful-everything is designed to help you build your success along the way, moving from relatively simple to relatively complex. It introduces the materials, tools, and skills that will continue to be helpful as you develop expertise.
From basics to advanced.......2005-02-19
5 years ago I was mentored by a friend who taught me to tie basic flies... unfortunately life got in the way and I didn't tie flies for two years. A year ago, I pulled out my vise and materials, which inlcluded this book. By starting from the beginning, this books takes you through all the basics and gives you a foundation to tie ANY fly you want - the only limiting factor is the price of materials. If you're new to tying, this book de-mystifies topics such as the whip finish and palmering hackle to name just a couple. As a bonus, it is spiral bound to lay flat so you can tie along with step-by-step instructions and troubleshooting.
IRREPLACEABLE - THE BEST OF THE BEST.......2004-12-09
I own a number of fly tying books and this, by far, is the best. If you start with only one book, start with this one. The author methodically goes step by step, using fly patterns which require most, if not all, of the basic skills. The photography and illustrations are wonderful. Not only does the author give you exact, easy to follow directions each step of the way, he goes as far as to give a point by point review of what should be done if you find yourself in a mess. (invaluable for a klutz like myself). This, as I indicated, is by far one of the best books for beginners, but should certainly be owned and used by more advanced fly tiers also. The price is well worth it and in the long run will save you much money and certainly much time and frustration. I do wish there were more "how to" books around of this quality. Highly recommend this one.

Book Description
Intrigue. Suspense. Romance. Evil schemers, innocent victims, and true love. Is it a TV soap opera? Not exactly. It’s what’s happening to 16-year-old Sophie Olivette when her father announces he wants out of his marriage and has found a new true love. And where is Sophie’s mother? She is seeking “inner harmony,” and doesn’t seem to notice that the family is falling apart. As for Sophie’s older sister, her anger adds drama, but doesn’t help. Only her classmate Ted seems a solid, reasonable, and even good-looking person in the midst of the mess around her. How do you fast forward to the final episode–and can it possibly end happily ever after?

Avoiding Divorce.......2007-04-26
Sophie's life has suddenly turned into a soap opera. Her mother has always been sort of strange, getting interested in odd things. Now she seems to think there is some special meaning in the partial Stonhenge erected in her neighbor's yard. She wants to finish the stone circle and dance around it in the dark. Sophie's father has decided he has had enough, and he is planning to divorce Sophie's mother and marry the former college roommate of Sophie's sister. He will then sell their beautiful home and find a small apartment for Sophie and her mother to live in while he travels the world with his new young wife.
No one seems to think that there is any reason for Sophie to be as upset as she is. She hates her father for being insensitive and not listening at all to her concerns. He doesn't even seem to notice she exists anymore. She is angry at her mother for not fighting back, for pretending everything is fine and living in her own little world. She is angry at her sister for being away at college and being so self-centered that she won't come home to try to help.
So Sophie comes up with a plan. She will bulldoze her house. That way her father will have no money to travel the world and his new fiance will leave him. And they will all live happily ever after. But will her neighbor, her quiet and sensitive classmate Ted whose family owns gravel pits and several bulldozers, help her with her plan? Or will he be able to talk her out of it?
I thought the character of Ted was great, and I loved his family and his relationship with them. I also liked how his parents dealt with Sophie and her mom. I hated Sophie's parents, though. Her father was a horrible person and I wanted Sophie to hate him completely. Her mother was far too concerned about herself when she should have been concerned about her daughter. Their marriage wasn't worth saving.

"Who was going to remember all of this when the family broke up? Not Mother. She wasn't involved. Not Dad. He didn't even know anything was breaking."
Sophie Olivette lives in a small town with her father and mother. She loves how everything goes her way and nothing too disastrous happens. Yet.
Marley has just gone off to college and Sophie is extremely excited. She won't have to fight with her sister and they will become closer than before. Little does she know, Sophie will need Marley more than she ever would. After her father's hidden love for Marley's roommate is revealed, her life will never be the same.
Marley was on her usual visit home and introduced her new roommate, Persia, to the family. Soon after that, Sophie noticed unusual behavior in her father. He began to ask about Persia, -how they were getting along, how she was in school, and when she was coming back with Marley to visit. One day it was finally revealed that Mr. Olivette and Persia were in love and getting married. Sophie couldn't believe what she was hearing. Could this be true? Could her own father have a new love? From then on, Sophie did anything possible to make her father feel guilty.
Sophie reacquaints herself with a few people and becomes better friends with them. Her friendship between Ted Larkman, a former classmate, has grown larger than ever, even to the point where they have stronger feelings for each other. Ted and his family know the problems the Olivettes are going through and decide they are going to help. Mrs. Olivette finds a half-completed "stone henge" on the Larkman's land. She wants to move the last stone there to re-join them by the winter solstice. It takes pure courage to help a family with this need and it is extremely brave of Ted and his family to try.
If I could describe Tune in Anytime in one word I'd say surprising. Its soap opera-like content had me guessing what would happen in the next chapter. I couldn't possibly be bored reading it. Its detailed plot will absorb the reader and make them feel like they're right next to Sophie the whole way, like they're living out her life. Sophie took life to the extreme and won in the end. Not only is this book exciting, but it also teaches the reader a lesson about life, -don't let serious things go; take careful action and it will go your way in the end. There are many surprises, exciting conflicts, twists, and obstacles in Tune In Anytime; there is no way anyone could possibly put it down. A reader who is going through tough times at home or knows someone who is having problems similar to Sophie's, I strongly recommend this book to you!

Quick read.......2004-10-31
Not Cooney at her best but it was a fast and fairly entertaining read. Sophie's family has disintegrated around her. Her self-centered sister is at college and her father is divorcing his family to marry her roommate. Sophie's mother, Edith, is too busy being "one with nature and the cosmos" to defend her rights (or those of her daughters) in the divorce proceedings. As her world falls apart, Sophie has to find her own center and hold on for dear life. She has to become a family of one.
Her goofy mother, selfish father and self absorbed sister made me wonder if Sophie was adopted. Cooney has written a book that does mirror the confusion and pain that kids feel when parents separate. Even though Sophie and her sister are young adults, they still need their parents. I just wish Cooney had let the bulldozer finish the job.
How to Wreak Vengeance with a Bulldozer.......2004-07-24
Caroline B. Cooney's Tune in Anytime was an interesting look at two families. Primarily the story dealt with the unraveling of the ties that bind the dysfunctional Olivette family together. Edith, the mother, made "finding herself" a full time job. The oldest daughter, Marley, was self-centered and constantly ranting and raving. Daniel, the father, fell head-over-heels in lust with Marley's college roommate, Persia. The only person acting like a responsible adult was the youngest daughter, Sophie. Sophie felt like her life had turned into a soap opera. The author provided a solid and ordinary family to compare with the Olivettes. Ted and his family were very down-to-earth people. The parents acted like adults and they were caring and respectful of one another.
Tune in Anytime described some outlandish events. However, I felt like the characters and events could have been real. In my mind, I could imagine the evening news describing the final scene. I almost dropped the book because I was laughing so hard.
I would recommend Tune in Anytime to all young adults, but especially to anyone who is dealing with divorce. Children going through a divorce will be able to relate to Sophie's feeling that she was the only person in her family who was still a family. Everyone else was single. Karen Woodworth-Roman
