Advice: get here before the lawyers do.......2004-09-19

I can't believe no one has reviewed this great book yet! Most of my graduate class in executive assessment read it all in the first week--not a response most professors expect of busy students. As a management psychologist for 25 years before returning to teaching last year, my reaction to almost every page of this book was "yes, yes--you're right, corporations are never so embarrassingly irresponsible and irrational as when they pick their leaders (OK, it's a close tie with acquisition frenzy). This book presents clear, easy to understand, research on the selection of over 500 executives by senior execs attending seminars at the Center for Creative Leadership. The reserachers found that the processes used to select successful executives are clearly different than the techniques to select executives who "didn't work out" (failures are in the 50% range for this sample--no surprise given Hogan's widely accepted estimate of over 60% failures). The researchers note that it doesn't take much more time and effort to do this task in a way that can enormously--no, I mean astoundly--improve the probability of a successful selection. My students, at Alliant International University, are smart, but they haven't yet figured out why businesses don't just use the approach outlined clearly and justified by data in this book. That's why it makes such a great text for a professor--this book brings corporate politics, egos, turf protection, and communications (you thought it was only their own teenagers that executives can't communicate with?)right down to the level that students (or your own executive team) can't deny. If you are an executive, use this book, or you'll be sorry. If you're a lawyer--hmmm, would an executive team who ignored these data be culpable from a class action perspective if their brand new executive bombed? Don't ask me--but it is a great supplementary text book for Gen-X psychology students who love examples of Boomer bombers.

This book is another great in the series of A Baffled Parent's Guide. These books are thorough and complete - a coach's bible, especially a new coach. The book covers everything from basics of the game to working with the children and dealing with the parents. I highly recommend books from this series.

good book for beginning coaches.......2002-06-23

I have yet to coach a girls' softball team, but I am really interested in doing it. This book has some great advice on how to handle beginner players and their parents. The thing about this book that I found great was that it told you some characteristics to look for when selecting a pitcher, something that I would not have had a clue about doing. Highly recommended.

This is an AMAZING book! Even if you have never coached, played, or even heard of softball, it helps you out. It breaks every aspect of the game down and puts it in simple terms so you can explain it to your team. It gives you practice advice and schedules as well as drills you can use for team members to improve, or establish, softball skills. It also gives you advice on how to become the best coach, dealing with gender issues and how to handle difficult parents. This book is a MUST for EVERY coach!

Excellent Coaching Book for New Coaches.......2001-04-28

I am not a parent but nonetheless, this book is excellent! This book gets right down to the heart of coaching. It tells you step by step how to teach someone how to throw, catch, pitch, hit and play every position. It also tells you what type of girl would be good for positions of pitchers and catchers which is important since most girls at this age have no experience in many positions. The drills have diagrams and there is glossary in the back to help with the terminology. There are not that many good softball coaching books (believe me I've looked), so grab this one!

Very good in the beginning, but after that, it's ok.......2007-02-14

Just like I said. The first part of this phrasebook helps you understand grammar, small phrases, and many words, but after that it just tells you a lot of the things like sentences and more questions and answers.

I recommend this if you are travelling, but if you are just trying to learn the language, I would not recommend it because it's hard to remember all of the questions, answers, and phrases it contains from about the 1/4 to the end of the book.

But it was really good in explaining grammar, pronouns, and many other things. So buy it if you want.

I feel this book is not only usefull for comunication with other people during my travel but also very well prepare to be user friendly. It was exellent in my trip to Japan have it with me.

I found this very easy to understand, as did my husband who had no prior knowledge of the Japanese language. I read it many times before our trip, in order to remember important basic words.
We referred to it many times during our trip, and it was very usefull. I would suggest everyone purchase it.
Its small size is also great, easy to put in a pocket, backpack or handbag.

Useful inspite of itself........2004-09-02

I bought this on my first flight back from Japan after taking my first semester in Japanese. I thought that it supplied a ton of useful auxillary vocabulary to run with at the level of grammar I was capable of using. The book also has many slight mistakes, even I, a first year student, was able to pick out. It's got a few cute but dumb, potentially racist but we'll say ignorant drawings included. But so few that it cues one in as to how cheaply produced this probably was. I give it three stars though because I learned it forward and backward and broke it out numerous times to meet my needs in bars and train stations (never in restaurants for some reasons). And, to get me comic leverage in many conversations where I was not privy to the Japanese side of the chatter.

sloppy formatting and too many errors.......2004-04-30

This book has the right idea: a pocket-sized book with a good variety of useful everyday phrases, organized by subject. However, there are enough flat-out mistakes to be pretty annoying. Also, the English and Japanese did not line up perfectly on the page which, in combination with the the print being quite small, made it difficult to figure out which defintion went where (perhaps this is not a problem with all these books but it was with mine). But most annoying are the errors and typos.

I bought a few reference guides before travelling to Tokyo last year. This was the only one that I used. The tape introduces you to general phrases that won't make you standout as such a tourist. The fold out guide that mimics the tape was my best friend on the trip. I highly recommend this over anything else that I found on the net.

The Journey of a Mad Man

Changing Jareth By: Elizabeth Wennick

Changing Jareth is a unique novel about a young hero. Overall, I would rate this book five out of five stars. Obviously this book was very good, but there are three main reasons as to why I feel that this book was so good. One being that the protagonist is always exciting and fun to follow. Two, the story is a great example of a hero, and three it keeps the readers attention from the very first chapter to the Epilogue.

From the very beginning of the book, Part One: Corruption, you interact with an interesting boy named Jareth Gardner. You find that his life is very hard between his always-drunk mother, to his premature nine-year-old brother. You also learn that Jareth brought a knife to school, stole constantly, had a personal counselor, and overall his life wasn't good. Just as you thought the excitement would end here, it gets better! Near the end of Part One you read that Jareth's mother does something terrible which result in her going to jail...

By Part two: Redemption, Jareth has tried many different ways to kill himself until the most unexpected person helped him. Jareth quickly hit rock bottom until the help of this "angel" gets him back on his feet. At this point you may understand how the main character is exciting and fun to follow!

Finally by the end of Part two, and into the Epilogue: Hope, Jareth is healthy, happy, and living an excellent life of his own. I would strongly recommend reading this book to find out all of the details and the true ending of the story and life of Jareth Gardner.

Interesting.......2000-12-22

I thought this book was really worth reading. It talks about how this young teenage boy Jareth, was in a gang and always did really bad things. He always got into trouble all the time. So his parents decide to fly him to his grandmother's house. There Jareth had learned discipline. His grandmother made him do community service, and take counceling. Overall I think if anyone reads this book even if they aren't thinking of doing anything bad that they will think twice about what they would do!

Wow. I don't think there are enough praising words for this book. I got it out of the library because i didn't have anything else to read. After looking at the cover for a while, I almost decided not to read it after all, but I ended up reading it before going to bed last night. I am so glad I did. I read it in a couple hours, only putting it down to go to sleep when my eyes wouldn't stay open. The story is set in Canada, (yay Canada!) and that helps it seem much more real. While this isn't the cheeriest story, it is definatly one of the best ones I have ever read. Elizabeth Wennick is definatly going up!

lousy title, good story.......2000-05-18

Jareth is a neglected teen on the verge of turning into astatistic: a suicide attempt is triggered by his abusive alcoholicmother (in police custody for beating his sickly younger brother nearly to death). A friend's stepfather becomes his salvation. The healing process includes learning trust and responsibility through new friends, a job, turning around the life of a younger teen, and developing his artistic talent. This was an well done book with a lousy packaging. The title stinks...just Jareth would have been better. The misleading blurb on the back implies that Jareth goes into therapy to change. Although he attends 2 therapy sessions and spends a day in a mental hospital, neither is helpful, and Jareth ultimately is his own catalyst. The cover art, a photo of an attractive, smooth skinned young man, is unappealing. The writing however, is detailed and real. Jareth is a complex and dynamic character, and the supporting cast are well-drawn individuals. Occasionally the author's voice intrudes, especially at the end of each section, and the epilogue appears tacked on and heavy-handed. Still, teens who can get past the cover will enjoy this survival story.
