Book Description
From the authors of the most phenomenally successful training series of all time comes a second huge collection of ice-breakers, brain teasers, problem solvers, and session closers that have been chosen to train for the skills today's companies are seeking. Included are games that teach employees how to continuous learning; exercises that enhance motivation, effectiveness, and speed in providing quality customer service; and activities that foster team-building. As in the previous books, each game has been field tested by professionals, most games can be played in under 30 minutes, and all the games can be implemented at little or no cost.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful resource that could be improved.......2007-05-14
The best thing about The Complete Games Trainers Play is its sheer size. Actually, it isn't nearly as big as some reviews imply. It is really around 1000 pages, not 2000+. And for some reason, a significant percentage of those pages are left blank. But even with that caveat, this is still a sizable resource.
If you are willing to devote 30+ minutes to finding an activity, you are sure to find one (or five) that are ideal for your training event. The fact that individual "games" can be removed from the ring binder is also helpful. This allows you to use the activities without carrying the whole book around, and to easily photocopy sheets for individual participants as some activities require.
However, there are some significant downsides. There is no real way to find appropriate activities without flipping through virtually the entire book. A large number of the activities aren't very good. And, most of the book is in a strange "typewriter" typeface that makes it look like it came from 1972. (Oddly, there are some pages which are randomly sprinkled through the book that use a different, more recent-looking typeface.)
To really upgrade its usefulness, Games . . . would benefit from taking a leap into the computer age. In other words, along with the printed book, a computer CD should be included. This could feature a good, searchable index, which is now lacking. It would also make it possible to print out games, and modify handouts on the computer to your organization's needs.
I've never bought any other resources like this, so I can't say if this is better or worse than others. I can say that in spite of the steep price and the drawbacks, I'm definitely glad I purchased it. It was very useful to me, and will be again in the future. However, there are a few simple steps the authors and publishers could take to greatly improve it.
Trainers Dream.......2006-11-03
This is a great tool of Trainers. Keeping your trainees engaged throughout the training is always a challenge. This tool give creative ways to assess retention of information. The games are great and the administrative forms and suggestions are wonderful.
Lots of games here.......2004-12-08
People love playing games a lot more than listening to lectures; this is indisputable. I didn't like all of the games listed here, but so what. Several I found helpful and intend to use.
Not Impressed.......2003-09-30
Although there is a lot of information packed into this book, I was very unimpressed with the layout and visual design. It looks like it was typed up in 1970. The graphics are ancient and the layout is just one big binder with no cross-referencing or indexing available. To find a useful game, you have to sift through hundreds of pages. It really is a shame, as there are some clever games here to loosen up an audience.
Frankly for this price, I expected something a bit flashier and filled with reproducibles that I would want to copy and hand out. The way it looks now, and with it's unwieldy format, it's going to sit on my shelf.
If I hadn't spilled water on it, I would have sent it back for a refund.
The Complete Games Trainers Play.......2000-05-23
This book was helpful in planning an in-house managment training session. The book is divided into sections making it easy to locate games targeted at specific areas. The book is actually a 3" 3 ring binder. It is a large book, however, it does contain a wealth of information.
Book Description

Book Description

Over 100 ready-to-use games, exercises, and activities help you to build, implement and maintain work teams. You'll find games for: group/individual empowerment; organizational change readiness; personal skill building; work definition; role fulfillment; task/process evaluation; conflict resolution; much more.
Customer Reviews:
Silly, simplistic, stay away.......2006-10-02
I expected a lot from this book, yet ended up disappointed. Perhaps I expected too much, but the great majority of games strike me as either silly or simplistic. A few are also very ethno-centric with some American songs to be sung, perhaps a thing to do in the States, but try that in other countries ... Maybe that's why the author calles them "games" instead of (meaningful) exercises or training activities ...
Book Description
Use this powerful collection of experiential learning activities to confront—and eliminate—difficult organizational problems. All the designs are devoted to changing hidden attitudes, assumptions, and values that people seldom even acknowledge, but that often sabotage even successful companies. Stimulating and challenging to facilitate, the interventions make it possible to win employees’ trust and confidence while changing negative attitudes, healing old mistrust, repairing team conflicts, fostering empathy towards minority groups, restoring lost confidence in a leader, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource, with depth........2000-02-02
Napier & Gershenfeld have created a real gift to the seasoned facilitator/trainer with this work. It's not just a quick cookbook of games, but instead a guide to the design process of interventions with sample templates (activities) in major areas such as leadership, communication, conflict resolution, etc. Each activity has a standard version and a Turbo version if time is short. Granted some of the activities are "on the edge", but I happen to like that, and after all the title says it's ADVANCED. Expensive, but comes in the form of a loose-leaf binder with reproducibles. For me worth every penny!
Very tricky ideas,watch yourself!.......1999-05-07
. Only for the most advanced facillitator. Many of these activities put people at risk, you better know how to handle this! Many of the ideas are old "hat" with a new twist, really nothing new. Something of a disappointment.

Customer Reviews:
excellent resource for trainers & facilitators.......2004-10-16
As a trainer & facilitator with more than 20 years of experience, I have read and/or utilized dozens of books & notebooks such as this one, and unfortunately most of them are disappointing. The same exercises, perhaps with minor variations, seem to inhabit the contents of most "New" activity books available. One stand-out exception to that is "Team Development Games for Trainers" by Roderick Stuart. Although I am familiar with literally thousands of activities, games, and trainer tools, most of the ones in this volume were new to me. Hooray!
In addition to the actual "teambuilding" activities themselves, you'll also find ideas to address a wide range of skills associated with team development, such as assertiveness, communication, creativity, decision-making, listening, planning, problem solving and time management. Each activity is presented in a standard format, with an indication of objectives, timing and group size and detailed step-by-step guidance for the trainer or team leader.
The ring-bound format makes it easy to carry just the pages you need for the day, and to make copies for participants when necessary. Now if they'd just add a cd-rom to the package...
If you're a trainer looking for new ideas, this is the place!

Book Description
Biological Invasions assembles detailed information on components of the invasive-species problem from six continents. This volume reconfirms the diverse and unpredictable roles that non-native species assume as they invade new ecosystems: destruction of vital crops and forests, major damages to ecosystems leading to loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and water loss. In addition, it covers the impact of disease organisms on human health and livestock. Information is provided on how the non-native species invade new ecosystems and the subsequent environmental effects of these invading species. Wherever possible, estimates on the economic impacts of the invading species are included.

Book Description
While the emergence and evolution of solar surface magnetic flux reveals what goes on in the solar interior, the interplay of convection and magnetic field in the photosphere regulates the field dispersal and drives the instabilities which heat the outer solar atmosphere. The book presents a synthesis between observers and theorists, both with regard to the magnetic elements which make up solar magnetic fields (ranging from tiny flux tubes to whole active regions), and to the surface patterns in which these elements display properties of the subsurface dynamo. A major breakthrough comes from numerical simulations. Modeling of flux concentration, flux tube dynamics, penumbral topology, umbral fine structure, etc. turns solar physics into an experimental science. The reviews and research papers in this volume provide an up-to-date overview of the solar frontier of astrophysical magnetohydrodynamics. The elements and patterns of solar surface magnetism contain much information about the subsurface solar dynamo as well as on the magnetically dominated energy budget and structuring of the outer solar atmosphere. The volume treats high-resolution solar polarimetry, the physics of solar magnetic elements, and the information contained in their patterns of emergence on the solar surface in depth, with a good balance between theoretical and observational studies.

Book Description
Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos are more accessible than ever before. For the first time in over three decades, it is possible to bicycle around Angkor Wat, motorcycle through hill tribe areas of North Vietnam, or cruise on a cargo boat through the Mekong Delta. Throughout the region, authorities are turning battlefields into marketplaces and tourist attractions. Logging thousands of kilometers by train, bus, jeep, boat, moto, bicycle, and on foot, author Michael Buckley explored all three countries extensively, getting to know the people, the customs, and the landscape. He helps you have a truly personal experience. Suggested travel strategies and lists of must-see sights provide you with real insights so you can decide where you should go, stay, and eat—without hassles or regrets. Complete with maps, photographs, illustrations, and special emphasis on leading destinations such as the War Crimes Museum in Saigon, Vietnam's French-built mansions and tree-shaded boulevards in Hanoi, the Angkor Wat towers, and the unspoiled natural environment and traditional culture of Laos, Moon Handbooks Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos has the tools you need to create your own unique trip.
Customer Reviews:
Adequate only.......2007-04-26
Adequate rather than good, this is no Lonely Planet guide. The structure covering three countries means a significant amount of flipping back and forth to locate information on the country you're currently in. The Siem Reap/Angkor Wat section is particularly confusing, with the practical (hotel, restaurant & general living) information interleaved with the descriptions of the temple complex.
Although published in 2006, much of the political information did not appear to have been updated since approximately 2000.
This book will not encourage me to buy Moon for any of my future travels
The Best.......2002-12-21
This is the best guide available. Moon travel beats the major competitor (the main travel-trail eye-sore creator) in almost all respects, but not all.
Moreso than other travel guides, the Moon travel guide for Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia has tons and tons of recent political, social and economic history in addition to significant cultural notes that a visitor *must* be aware of. (i.e., what does a South East Asian smile mean?) The maps of the cities and provinces are excellent. the all-important overland border-crossings between 'Nam, Laos, and Cambo are cleary marked. This is one of the many reasons that Moon can't be beaten at the moment. This guide's overland itineraries are the best. Example: you want to go into China overland fron northern Vietnam. How can you get up to Kunnming, China? It tells ya. And, we learn, that the one way flight into Bangkok from Kunming is the same price as the one that flys from Hanoi. (This price equality of course must be verified).
The information regarding the pricing and existence of certain establishments that cater to travelers is outdated. However, where to eat or sleep has never been an important part of a book anyhow, just the general information about the area in general and how to get there is all a visitor needs. Does someone need to read a guidebook to decide specifically where to eat? Where to specifically sleep? If it does for you, do everyone a favor: stay home.
The underlying story that provides the "general-informational" foundation is enough. When we come through town, understandably we don't know much, but that is far better than knowing absolutely nothing at all, which is quite common now from my conversations with tourists, and especially now among "backpackers." The purpose of why backpacking started has been lost for most.
By the way, it is a fact that the communist government censors this guidebook. I found that out trying to pick it up at the post office. Well worth having.
Disappointing.......2001-05-02
This book is getting mixed reviews. It seems like friends of the author say its great. Those who tried to actually use the book are disappointed that everything is so out of date. This edition was not updated since the first edition and is now really out of date. Things change, but sloppy research is always out of style.
An Outstanding Guidebook.......2000-01-30
I've been using Michael Buckley's Vietnam Handbook for two months now and have found it to be excellent. It's well organized with country introductions which told me almost everything I wanted to know. Michael's sidebars are intriguing and I especially appreciate the city walking tours which have led me to many hidden little places I might have missed otherwise. The maps are better than those in the other guidebooks because sites are labeled right on the maps themselves rather than coded in a key which is impossible to read in dim lighting (a fault with the Lonely Planet series). Michael has provided not only the usual city and country maps, but also detailed inner city maps and even maps of the individual temples around Angkor Wat. This book covers three countries and sure beats having to buy and lug around individual guides to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. I've found that the coverage better than adequate and certainly head and shoulders above the general Southeast Asia guides which are surprisingly sketchy about these countries. Indochina is changing so fast that much of the practical information in any guide is bound to be out of date before the book reaches the shelves and this 1998 edition does require updating, but so do all the other guides to the region. You usually end up getting that kind of information from other travelers anyway. Of the three countries included, the coverage of Cambodia is the weakest, obviously because that country is only now opening to independent travel. Next edition Michael needs to get to places like Kampong Cham, etc. Meanwhile I recommend this handbook highly over all its competitors.
A good companion to other guides, esp. for sights and history.......1999-08-17
I used this guide for travel throughout Cambodia and in Saigon in the summer of 1999. I found it to be well-written and insightful, particularly about history, culture, and general observations about travel in the region. I found that I didn't rely on it so much for nitty-gritty details like accommodations or travel info (I used Let's Go: Southeast Asia for that) or for places to go out (I borrowed someone else's Lonely Planet for that). But I did come to rely on its clear modern history sections, its meticulous maps, and even its opening chapters on travel in the region. This guidebook is clearly thoughtfully and thoroughly researched. Although I wouldn't recommend traveling with it alone, I certainly was glad I brought it along.
Book Description
Travel guide to Laos, one of the treasures of South East Asia, an enigmatic country influenced by the French, defined by the Mekong river and belonging to another time.
Customer Reviews:
Good Geography, bad politics............2006-11-30
Excellent guide that seems well researched and geared for the middle income tourist (very rare in guidebooks). Comprehesive and up to date prices and listings were evident throughout. Only shortcoming was a decidedly leftist bent in the book's extensive history and cultural sections that is overly sycophantic and apologetic to the the illegal Vietnamese invasion and its subsequent occupation/exploitation of the nation from the 1950s to 1980s. Also overt propaganda excusing the oppressive Prathet Lao attrocities is evident in its sprinkling throughout the book. As this is a trend in LP and Rough Guides as well, I suppose I cannot blame this young author too for falling into the "Khao san Road journalist" trap. But overall, outside of the naiive political bent, the book is very handy and almost as good as the Moon Handbooks used to be when they were written for the area.

Information Can Be Organized Poorly, Glib review of some Laotian History.......2005-10-29
This book may or may not be the best guidebook of Laos. I did find it much less useful for navigating Laos than the Let's Go: Thailand book was for Thailand.
The biggest problem with the book is its organization within the major cities. Often, you'll read through the section on your city, then, later, remember something you wanted to do or see - only to be unable to find it, ultimately finding it tucked away in some other odd section of the book. It often has the feel of being written off-the-top of someone's head, without a lot of subsequent reorganization or editing.
Also, the provided historical information is often limited or outright false in a fairly significant way. For example, in reviewing the history of the Hmong in Laos, the book mentions that reports of the communists using chemical weapons against the pro-US Hmong (after the US pulled out of SE Asia at the end of the Vietnam War) has been proven to be false, that the "yellow rain" was actually from overpassing swarms of bees. While this explanation has been forwarded by the Laotian government, it is a laughable explanation that has been refuted by any sort of serious inquiry. The Hmong certainly were systematically repressed (and killed) at the end of the Vietnam War by the new communist government. This book makes it sound like this did not happen and that it was all a big misunderstanding. Granted, perhaps one should watch what they walk into Laos with. However, it would have been better to say nothing than to spread such misinformation.
The best!.......2003-01-31
Its the best book out there on Laos. The information seems to be correct and comprehensive. It is easy to follow and extremly helpful. I like that it always says good things about every hotel and restaurant. I doesnt critizise or generalize which is good!
You pretty much now where you want to go, how to get there and enjoying it with the help of this book!
I stayed in Laos for 2 months and this book made my stay there a whole lot easier! In the end of my stay I had very little money and the "catalogizied" sections of "cheap places to stay or eat" really helped me to work out my economy. There is also sections for medium or pricy places too.
This book has it all!
Buy this book, you will be happy you did!!!
Latest guidebook to Laos.......2001-08-06
It is refreshing that a travel book plunges you into the details of getting you around and through country before providing the background information that may be on interest to the reader while en route. The authors have provided detailed maps of the major cities (four for Vientienne of different focus of detail), a suggested walking tour of Louang Prabang (along with illustrations of the types of house design to find there) and the names and addresses of many guest houses - especially important for Louang Prabang as the more modestly priced places tend to fill up quickly. The authors present a knowledgeable level of detail which makes the reader think that they have actually been to the places they describe. I have compared their maps of some of the smaller northern cities (such as Muang Sing) to those prepared by locals and there appears to be no major discrepancies. They are not totally comprehensive - they give no mention to the boat route to Louang Namtha from Huay Xai and short shrift to the boat route to Xieng Khok from Huay Xai - which is disappointing as Huay Xai is one of the major entry points to Laos. The map at the end is not particularly detailed and is missing some small but interesting towns. The strengths of this book far outweigh these minor flaws and I look forward to the next edition.

Customer Reviews:
A nice story of intrigue and adventure (spoilers).......2006-02-13
One of the better CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE books, TREASURE OF THE ONYX DRAGON earns points for being logically consistent. What you learn in each path fits in nicely with the other ones and they never contradict. To learn all the backstory and solve all the puzzles requires several tries, you don't get to learn everything by taking one path. The choices are also pretty nice, if a bit easy; the right course of action is usually fairly obvious, though sometimes the bold, foolhardy course is the right one.
This book also has a nice atmosphere, but how could it not? Archaelogists, a gang of burglars, an international terrorist group, a Chinese smuggler and his family, a mysterious tribe of Native Americans, and a ghost ship. That's what you call a cast.
I only have two gripes. While it is possible to find the Star of Asia, the most massive emerald ever found, you don't get to keep it; you turn it over to someone else. The only treasure you can keep for yourself are some gold coins from the Onyx Dragon. And you never find out exactly why your father disappeared.
But aside from those, this is definitely an enjoyable book.
Can you locate the lost treasure ship?.......2004-10-07
From the back...You're spending the summer with your aunt Lydia on Orcas Island, in the Pacific Northwest. You've always been curious about the island's legend of the Onyx Dragon, a treasure ship that mysteriously sank off the coast over one hundred years ago. When you stumble upon an old letter, you decide to search for the ship and its precious cargo-the infamous emerald known as the Star of Asia. The letter provides you with three clues. Where should you look first?
