Book Description
Blue Ribbons and Burlesque presents more than 200 arresting photographs taken nearly 30 years ago and an engaging text that blends memories with information on nearly every aspect of the world of American country fairs. With the same keen observation and lyrical prose, Charles Fish has turned to the country fairs of his youth. Country fairs still draw crowds, and readers will recognize many of the features so strikingly captured in this book. But times have changed. "Looming larger for the young than they do today," Fish writes, "the fairs as I knew them are emblematic of a passing way of life. They were rich with images and wonders at a time when entertainment was more restrained, the panorama of the wide world less brutally revealed. They presented forms of excellence growing out of our daily life--fine cattle, fast horses, fine machines--but they also offered provocative glimpses of forms of pleasure and the grotesque usually veiled in our little village." While never ceasing to entertain and inform, Blue Ribbons and Burlesque also raises questions about nature and nurture, theatrical illusion, the pursuit of excellence, and the power of novelty and the erotic.

Remembrance of Vermont Country Fairs.......2007-07-01
Once you start reading Charles Fish's Blue Ribbons and Burlesque (A Book of Country Fairs), it's hard to stop. The book starts with "Magic" and ends when "The Curtain Falls." In between we are introduced to "Animals: Power," their "Speed and Show," "Feats of Skill and Daring," "Freak Shows," and "Girlie Shows," to name a few of the chapters I found most entertaining.
On almost every page Fish blends into the text black and white pictures he took himself. Not only is Fish an accomplished wordsmith, he is also a talented photographer. He catches people and events at just the decisive moment when a story is most clearly and dramatically told. With each chapter I looked first at the pictures and then went back to read the entertaining story. It is hard for me to say which I enjoyed more, pictures or text, because Fish brought not only his wry observations to his writing, but also a genuine sense of humor revealed in many of the photos. A deep sense of humanity lives on every page of this book -- real people living their lives, some as performers, others as observers. With his camera in hand Fish watches them all, tells their story, and captures that brief period in Vermont history when a country fair brought a little "magic" into the lives of salt-of-the-earth New Englanders.
Blue Ribbons and Burlesque is more than a coffee table diversion, although this would be enough to justify its existence. Fish gives us a chance to reflect with him on what we have lost when country fairs with strange and unusual people, magnificent animals, games of chance, cotton candy, Ferris Wheels, bumper cars, and old fashioned merry-go-rounds took us out of the humdrum of daily life and brought the exotic to our back door, even if only for a week. Then, as Fish says, "Kitchens, tack rooms, and bedrooms sported new blue ribbons, and giant teddy bears had new homes. Thudding hooves and roaring engines still echoed, but faded as the weeks wore on."
Thanks to Charles Fish's remembrance and all those photographs he saved for many years, the blue ribbons and burlesque can be revived and relived, with pleasure and perhaps nostalgia for days gone by and a life that did not find its center in a television set. Highly recommended.
Beautifully prepared.......2002-06-05
This book is easy to read and has glorious photos of bygone county fairs. An excellent selection for those interested in the history and feeling of the old fairs.
Great pictures, great prose.......2000-02-13
Though these state fairs were slightly before my time, yet I found the book fascinating. Fish's photographs and prose are a joy. Highly recommended
A highly evocative collection of historical country photos........1998-09-04
These black and white photos, along with the recollections of the author, conjure up an intriguing look back at country fairs - something that goes well beyond the simple nostalgia that one might expect from such a collection. The photos are touching and powerful, and reveal elements of both the human and animal condition in regards to such fairs. Things like the burlesque shows may be a thing of the past, and these photos perhaps show why as Fish looks at both the girls on show and those who watched them with a detached and objective eye. A fine book altogether - especially for those interested in photo-realism or historical archives. The images speak on a number of levels...which is, in the end, the measure of a good photograph.

Heroes have a habit of growing larger over time, as do the arenas in which they excelled. The 1964 World Series between the Yankees and Cardinals was coated in myth from the get-go. The Yankees represented the establishment: white, powerful, and seemingly invincible. The victorious Cards, on the other hand, were baseball's rebellious future: angry and defiant, black, and challenging. Their seven-game barnburner, played out against a backdrop of an America emerging from the Kennedy assassination, escalating the war in Vietnam, and struggling with civil rights, marked a turning point--neither the nation, nor baseball, would ever be quite so innocent again. Halberstam, one of the great reporters of the '60s, looks back in this marvelous and spirited elegy to the era, the game, and players such as Mantle, Maris, Ford, Gibson, Brock, and Flood with a clear eye in search of the truth that time has blurred into legend. His confident prose, diligent reporting, and deft analysis make it clear how much more interesting--and forceful--the truth can be.
Book Description
THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
THE BEST SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR
"October 1964 should be a hit with old-time baseball fans, who'll relish the opportunity to relive that year's to-die-for World Series, when the dynastic but aging New York Yankees squared off against the upstart St. Louis Cardinals. It should be a hit with younger students of the game, who'll eat up the vivid portrayals of legends like Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris of the Yankees and Bob Gibson and Lou Brock of the Cardinals. Most of all, however, David Halberstam's new book should be a hit with anyone interested in understanding the important interplay between sports and society."
--The Boston Globe
"Compelling...1964 is a chronicle of the end of a great dynasty and of a game, like the country, on the cusp of enormous change."
--Newsweek
"Halberstam's latest gives us the feeling of actually being there--in another time, in the locker rooms and in the minds of baseball legends. His time and effort researching the book result in a fluency with his topic and a fluidity of writing that make the reading almost effortless....Absorbing."
--San Francisco Chronicle
"Wonderful...Memorable...Halberstam describes the final game of the 1964 series accurately and so dramatically, I almost thought I had forgotten the ending."
--The Washington Post Book World
"Superb reporting...Incisive analysis...You know from the start that Halberstam is going to focus on a large human canvas...One of the many joys of this book is the humanity with which Halberstam explores the characters as well as the talents of the players, coaches and managers. These are not demigods of summer but flawed, believable human beings who on occasion can rise to peaks of heroism."
--Chicago Sun-Times

This Is More Than A Sports Book.......2007-06-12
It is said that sports is a microcosm of society and this is much more than a book about baseball. This book focuses on the World Series of that year to symbolize the end of the age of inocence.
The New York Yankees represent "The Establishment" . The St Louis Cardinals were the up and coming team. Representing the new direction that sports and society were about to take.
It reminds me a little of the '69 Super Bowl were Colts and Johnny Unitas represented the conservative NFL, whereas Joe Namath and the New York Jets represented the more rebellous up and coming AFL. Both championships were a clash of cultures.
Halberstam takes an indepth look at players and personel of both the Cardinals and the Yanks.
An Epochal World Series.......2007-06-02
A classic matchup: the establishment Yankees vs the underdog Cardinals, who field a younger, more diverse team. The St Louis team makes the Series by the slimmest of margins after overcoming what most thought to be an insurmountable September lead by the Phillies. Then (this was before the postseason playoffs that started in 1969) they were off to the Series to meet the mighty Yankees. The seven game series that resulted was one for the record books. The Cardinals prevailed, but not without a tremendous challenge from the Yanks. The series could just as easily have gone the other way. Halberstam sets up the season for both teams and then provides a wonderful narrative of this nailbiter Series. His minibiographical sketches of key players personalizes the story.
This is a book that baseball fans will truly enjoy.
A very good book.......2007-04-21
Not quite as good as Summer of 1949, but still extremely good. Halberstam does an excellent job of capturing a place and a time. A must read for true baseball fanatics.
Well-written, though a bit disjointed.......2006-11-09
I enjoyed this book but not as much as Halberstam's great "Summer of '49." As that book did with the Yankees and Red Sox, "October 1964" takes you through the Yankees' and Cardinals' respective seasons, with regular focuses on individual players, scouts, managers and owners. The title, then, is a bit misleading, as you don't get to October and the World Series until near the end of the book. That's fine, except that whereas "Summer of '49" was about two teams fighting each other all season long for the AL pennant, "October 1964" follows two teams in two different leagues, who didn't face each other until the Series. Halberstam's evident intent is to present the two teams in contrast: the rigidly conservative, declining Yankees opposed to the young, hustling, racially integrated Cardinals. It almost works, but in the end it's like reading two separate books - a chapter or two about the Cardinals, then back to the Yankees, Cardinals, Yankees, etc., until the end, when they finally take the same playing field. That gives the book a bit of a disjointed feel and robs it of some of the intensity of "Summer of '49." Still, the portraits of the personalities involved are engaging, and the reader gets a good feel for the state of professional baseball circa 1964, making this a must-read for any lover of baseball history.
An AWESOME book on baseball.......2006-06-22
I just finished this book today, and it was AWESOME. In my opinion, this book was NOT biased or pro-St. Louis. It simply showed one team that wanted to remain mostly old-school and segregated, and another where youth played a big role and integration was welcomed and thrived. It showed in great detail the lives of all the major players involved in the Series, from the pitchers to the catchers to the managers. It gave a very detailed setting, and made me feel like I was there with the players. A FANTASTIC read for the avid baseball fan. If you want to read the ultimate story of head-to-head all-star competition (Mantle vs. Brock, Maris vs. White), this is it. From Bob Gibson to Lou Brock, Mickey Mantle to Elston Howard, this book covers all the stars of the '64 Yankees & Cardinals teams and chronicles their amazing season. Definitely an A+ on this book!
Book Description
The years 1950 and 1951 were significant in Britain's Post-war foreign policy. The Cold War was at its height, the Korean War was beginning and German rearmament was a contentious issue. At the same time, Britain's ambiguous relations with Europe were becoming apparent during discussions over the Schuman Plan, and the dispute with Iran over oil revenue was becoming increasingly hostile.
During this period, Kenneth Younger was the no. 2 minister at the Foreign Office, meaning his diaries offer a unique insight into world events at a time when Britain could still claim to be an international power. In this book, Younger's papers have been collected for the first time, and his incisive analysis and vivid descriptions of event and personalities make this essential reading for anyone interested in the post-war period. This primary source is also of relevance to present day issues of foreign policy, particularly in its shred evaluations of the pros and cons of the 'special relationship' between Britain and the United States.

Recommended for college-level students of Catholic history.......2001-02-21
The hefty price tag of this history may keep it from all but the most specialized Catholic library collections, but it continues the coverage of Vatican II begun in previous volumes, with this covering the mature council, second period and intersession from September 1963-1964 - a period in which the Vatican II began to assume its character. From the debate of collegiality to the Council's completion of the first two documents, chapters cover its revision of major texts and its political involvements. Recommended for college-level students of Catholic history.

The Education of Mary, A Little Miss of Color, 1832..........2002-01-12
Canterbury, Connecticut 1832-
Thirteen-year old Mary Harris is growing up in a time period of the beginnings of the underground railroad and the start of the friction between blacks and whites before the Civil War. When Mary's sister, Sarah, becomes the first African-American girl to be admitted to an exclusive Canterbury female seminary, controversy arrises which provokes Miss Carandall, the head of the seminary,to turn the Paine Mansion into an all female colored school. As the situation escalates and gains national publicity, Mary is fighting for a cause she beleives to be true. The turmoil on the outside of the seminary is nothing compared to the tension and dividing that is taking place within. Based on the true story of the first school for black girls in Connecticut, if you like good, raw historical fiction you'll love this book! Although somewhat slow in parts Ann Rinaldi improvises, depicting this brief period of history-the personalities, and the passion behind causes. I gave this book four stars because the topic was extremely interesting and entertaining, but not like some of Rinaldi's other edge-of-your- seat, page-turning, thrillers. The book was still incredibly well-written and thought provoking.
Deep.......2001-08-26
This book is deep.I don't know any other way to describe it. I almost cried while I was reading it, I wanted to scream with, anger, and most of all I felt sorry for Mary, to have a father that doesn't believe in controversy, and to be surronded people who don't understand her. Her father I think was just uhhhh, he was as blind as a mouse. And really to have your own father believe a rumor against his own daughters word! I agree with Mary I to would live with Charles and Mariah, then work at the mills to get money. Now Julia and Mary have experience the same pain but I thinkMary's was more excruciating, because to have you own father issuing the pain. I liked this book, and like I said it was deep.
a review.......2000-09-28
it was an excellent example of historical fiction
ue.......2000-09-27
I thought that this book was an excellent novel. First, I love Ann Rinaldi's books so i guess i would need to say that i am a bit partial to her work. Secondly, all of Ann Rinaldi's work has been excellent so when i say that she displays the historical background well and in an enthralling way that is true of not only this but all her novels. One bit of advice...never read the back author's note first! happy reading!
Finest.......2000-09-24
I really enjoyed this book, and think it is one of Rinaldi's finest.
Product Description
Grade 6-8-In 1832, Prudence Crandall, a Quaker educator in Connecticut, closed her Canterbury Female Seminary and reopened it as a school for young black women. This novel revolves around the formation of that school and the storm of controversy it created in town. Many historical forces come into play here: the abolitionist movement, endemic prejudice against free blacks, and the brutality of the early factory system. However, the major focus is a behind-the-scenes look at the girls in the school, as related by 13-year-old Mary Harris. She believes that her sister Sarah and her friends, also students there, act out of some romantic notion of becoming martyrs for the causes of freedom and justice. As the white townsmen try everything to close down the institution, Mary becomes quietly and courageously involved in helping with the local Underground Railroad movement. Mary, Sarah, and a few of the other girls are interesting, fairly well-developed characters. Prudence Crandall is less well understood. Was she a courageous advocate of equality or a pawn in the hands of abolitionists who used her to their advantage? Was she a strong, independent woman or was she dependent on the support of her family, especially her father? It's never made clear. In the end, she marries an opportunistic man with questionable motives and appears to have traded her dreams in order to have a husband. While there are numerous exciting moments in the story, overall the plot moves slowly. This novel will have the most appeal for Rinaldi's dedicated fans.
