5 out of 5 stars Forest Pest Simplified.......2003-05-26

This publication is a must have for anyone dealing with pest of native conifers of California! It is the perfect size to carry in the field while looking at the health of your trees as it fits into your vest or pocket. The photos are excellent, and the guide is one that most anyone can use to determine just what is wrong with your conifers.

With the current catastrophic pest outbreaks in Southern California this is a book that everyone living in the forested areas should purchase, read, and follow up with the other references. It lists which agencies are involved and how to contact them.

      A long overdue publication!

      Book Description

This is the first comprehensive, yet clearly presented, account of statistical methods for analysing spherical data. The analysis of data, in the form of directions in space or of positions of points on a spherical surface, is required in many contexts in the earth sciences, astrophysics and other fields, yet the methodology required is disseminated throughout the literature. Statistical Analysis of Spherical Data aims to present a unified and up-to-date account of these methods for practical use. The emphasis is on applications rather than theory, with the statistical methods being illustrated throughout the book by data examples.

This book is a very good book which treated spherical data comprehensively.
Although written very carefully, if a fundamental description is added to a slight degree, the buyer of this book will increase more.

        Book Description

These are the proceedings of a symposium devoted to astronomical time series. With the rising quantity, quality, and variety of temporal data, increasingly higher levels of sophistication are required of astronomers analyzing time series. Many of the central questions in astrophysics hinge on their measurement and analysis. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss some of the many recent applications, discoveries, problems and techniques of astronomical time series, and to bring to light the similarity of time series problems arising in different sub-disciplines. Contributions by some of the foremost experts in astronomical time series include the fields of general mathematical and statistical techniques, interacting binaries, planet searches, pulsars, gravitational lensing, and active galactic nuclei. The volume is a unique interdisciplinary compilation on the topic of astronomical time series, and is suitable as a graduate-level introduction to the various topics, as well as a reference for time-series related work.

          Book Description

During the last decades, landscape ecology has developed tremendously. It concerns both the theoretical basis and practical application. The authors follow a hierarchical approach that is inherent in landscape structures and processes as well as in planning practice. They show first approaches for the inclusion of factors of the landscape balance into planning procedures and new methods (GIS-coupled modeling, remote sensing) combined with more classical approaches from the basis of landscape assessment. Approaches for multicriterial landscape assessments are also presented. The overall target is to give recommendations for sustainable landuse and management. Each chapter concludes with a synthesis of the theme under discussion. Ideas concerning the state of the art are integrated as well as future trends in research. All methodological approaches are explained, with examples from differing regions.

This digital document is a journal article from Biological Conservation, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

              Description:
Geographical information system (GIS) data on landscape features and land use were collected to predict bryophyte diversity and conservation value in order to determine the factors that favour bryophytes at a large geographical scale and propose the relevant conservation measures. Total species diversity and diversity in species of high conservation value were highly correlated, and the landscape features promoting them were the proportion of military lands, steep slopes, and broadleaf woodland. Military lands seemed to be especially important for the conservation of endangered species highly specialized to open habitats maintained by the appropriate level of disturbance. Woodland cover was also as a key factor for bryophyte diversity but landscape heterogeneity, such as steep slopes with a range of contrasting ecological conditions, was required to reach the highest species numbers. The GIS-based approach presented here may help focusing the attention on sites exhibiting the appropriate landscape features in terms of conservation, which is especially relevant in the context of the European network `Natura 2000' for designating, conserving, and managing the sites of high biological value.

              Product Description

Angela Ruggiero is the world’s best women's ice hockey player as rated by Hockey News magazine. She was the first female non-goalie to play in a men’s professional hockey league, and she has used her status as a top female athlete to promote education, health, and the value of sports across the globe. A Harvard graduate, humanitarian, and rare hockey “triple crown” winner (Olympic gold medalist, world champion, and collegiate champion), she traces in Breaking the Ice the growth of girls’ and women’s hockey from the fringes of the sports world to the center of the Olympic and world stage. Angela’s inspirational journey from a childhood in the suburbs of Southern California, where she had to overcome skepticism concerning girls in hockey and even about the sport of hockey itself, to stardom in rinks around the world is a remarkable story of determination and athletic achievement. A leading player for all three U.S. Women’s Olympic Hockey teams for which she has played, she recounts not only the joys of ultimate victory but also the physical and emotional challenges that confront a topnotch athlete, including strains on family life, a punishing training regimen, and the rigors of constant travel. It reveals Angela as a dynamic and outspoken woman who has packed a rucksack full of intense experiences and hard-learned lessons into her life. Her story will appeal not only to hockey and sports fans but also to readers of all ages who are interested in the triumph of a woman who would not be daunted by the challenges of blazing a trail and breaking through barriers. Angela has played in six International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championships, and in April 2005 she scored one of the shootout goals that helped the U.S. team win the tournament for the first time. She was recognized by the NCAA as one of the Top VIII scholar athletes in the country. Since graduating from Harvard in 2004, Ruggiero has founded the All-American Girls Hockey School.

5 out of 5 stars hockey role model.......2007-02-04

I read this book after my 13 year hockey player finished. This is a life lesson book. She is one of the top in her field and like C.Gunn had things to overcome that made them stronger. This book lets girls know these are real people that worked hard, and it is possible to shoot for the stars.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for ALL female athletes.......2006-02-28

My daughter is a 10 year old girl hockey player and both she and I read the book, she actually did a powerpoint presentation for school on the book. This book is more than just a hockey book but an insiration to all girls about the obstacles Angela overcame in her life. After reading the book myself I am glad to know that my daughter looks up to Angela and wants to be like her, there is NO better role model for a young girl to look up to than Angela. This book is a must for all young girls, no matter what sport or activity they are involved in.

              5 out of 5 stars Inspiring........2006-02-24

This book talks about some of the early formings of girls/womens hockey in the USA. This is a very good book to read if you are familiar with hockey. Even if you are not involved with hockey you will like this book, because it talks about overcoming the odds and moving up in the ranks.

5 out of 5 stars Angela Ruggiero rocks my (hockey) socks.......2005-12-06

This book is less about hockey and more about getting a peek inside the life of one of the greatest athletes of all time. It details the dedication that excellence requires, combined with personal stories from Angela's life. This book should be a part of every female hockey player's library. As a bonus, Ruggiero is seriously hot.

                Book Description

In the deep South of the 1960s a young white girl's growing sense of right and wrong alienates her from her conservative father. Something is awry in Teddy's small Mississippi town. Everywhere she goes, people are talking about an uproar. Then one night Teddy witnesses a cross burning from her attic window. Soon after, she starts hearing about a group called the Ku Klux Klan. Along with her best friend, a black girl named Stella, Teddy embraces the civil rights movement in direct opposition to her staunchly conservative father. Over a period of several years, Teddy's family is undermined by the insidious effects of racism as her father struggles to maintain the status quo, her mother begins to speak out, and Teddy grapples with irreconcilable truths.

4 out of 5 stars The Darkest Corner is the Brightest Corner.......2001-02-01

The Darkest Corner brings to light the issues of racism and prejudice during the 1950's. This book is intense and very realistic. It's the kind of book that the reader just can't put down. This book is very historically accurate. It is like a window into the ideas and thoughts of the era. When you read it, it's as if you are going through the trials and triumphs along with the characters. teddy becomes like a real person. As you read she goes from a confused and naive little girl toa strong and righteous young woman. Her deep friendship with Stella keeps her from being blinded by prejudice. It is a beautiful book. Will Teddy choose loyalty to her father or loyalty to her beliefs? Read it.
