Out of date, but still useful; Excellent Bea Tuxedo Material.......2002-08-19

Although PeopleSoft 8 differs in significant ways from version 7 that is addressed in this book, the material is still invaluable. In particular, the authors impart a deep knowledge of PeopleSoft, Tivoli and Tuxedo. In fact, I gained more tips about Tuxedo (an integral part of both PeopleSoft 7x and 8x) from this book than from a pile of resource material from Bea and PeopleSoft. I also gained a deeper understanding of Tivoli and how it can be used to effectively monitor PeopleSoft or any other distributed application. Note that the Tivoli material in this book is also out of date, but a surprisingly large amount is still useful.

You're walked through the actual configuration and installation of Tivoli, which is well done with screenshots and brief, but descriptive explanations. In addition, there is a CD ROM that ships with this book, which contains UNIX shell scripts, most of which are for monitoring Tuxedo.

I gave this book 4 stars because it is out of date with respect to PeopleSoft and Tivoli - however, I didn't give it less (which I normally do for such books) because there is still much that you can learn from it and apply to PeopleSoft 8 with a little research and careful planning.

Required reading.......2000-06-14

This book should be your first stop if you want to manage your PeopleSoft environment with the Tivoli Enterprise Suite of products. It explains a lot of Tivoli products. If you are a Tivoli administrator, you will find a great overview on PeopleSoft and BEA TUXEDO, the transactional monitor PeopleSoft uses. Thanks to these overviews, it will be easier to understand each function of the Tivoli Manager products. If you are a PeopleSoft or BEA TUXEDO expert, it helps you to install and configure the Tivoli products quickly and efficently. It gives you all the tips to customize your Tivoli environment as needed. It gives answer to the most frequently questions you may have.

When most people hear the name "Hubble," they immediately think of NASA's costly snafu involving the flawed optics on the billion-dollar Hubble Space Telescope. Award-winning science writer John Gribbin and research astronomer Simon Goodwin have done their best to honorably exonerate pioneering astronomer Edwin Hubble's name by putting together this thoughtfully documented collection of eye-grabbing images, primarily from the now-corrected HST but also from other space- and ground-based telescopes and detectors.

Edwin Hubble made one of the most dramatic discoveries in all of science: that of the existence of galaxies beyond the Milky Way. This laid the groundwork for understanding the very origins of the universe (the Big Bang). For many years, evidence supporting the Big Bang hasn't been much to look at--just blurry photographs and squiggles from electronic detectors. But the current crop of detectors and telescopes, chief among them the Hubble, has changed all of that: this book takes advantage of that technology to map out the origins of our universe with a dazzling series of extraterrestrial images. Tracing the history of time through space, this series starts with distant quasars and then zooms in through swirling galaxies and murky nebulas, finally arriving back in our own solar system. Hubble the Man, not the Telescope.......2001-05-04

The first thing to note about this book is that it is not about the Hubble Space Telescope, but about our universe. It's subtitled "Hubble's Universe", because Edwin Hubble was the first astronomer to show that universe was composed of many galaxies and not just the Milky Way. In other words, he might be considered the founder of modern cosmology.

In this book, the authors present many of the classic photographs of the universe, the Milky Way and the solar system plus many new pictures as well. Accompanying each photograph is a detailed description of what was discovered and why is important. While some of the these photographs are over twenty-five old, they have been digitally enhanced, but still show the graininess associated with the early planetary space probes. In addition, there is a nice introductory section, which describes many of the discoveries from the past hundred years.

In general, I found most of the photographs contained in the book to be a good representation of the objects found in our universe. The photographs cover the extreme, from very distant galaxies to the Earth and the Moon.

If you are looking for a good book that summarizes the universe, Milky Way and the solar system in pictures, this book would good addition to your collection. If you are looking for new photographs or new information you will not find much in this book.

Excellent description of how the Universe came into being........1999-05-26

While the book is not heavy on text, its descriptions about the formation of stars, nebulae, galaxies and the universe in general are easy to read and understand. The supporting full page pictures at right are also well described. It is an excellent laymans guide to explaining how our world and the material that makes us who we are, came from the stars.

Nice big pictures but many not from Hubble. Text is skimpy........1998-03-20

With the title containing Hubble and Origins, I was hoping for lots of new information about what the latest data from Hubble ST would reveal about our origins. Instead the book is a compendium of very nice large format color photos of galaxies stars and the planets in our Solar system, accompanied by one paragraph captions - and a lot of white space where more information and analysis of "origins" could have been. I recommend this book for coffee table perusal, not for the serious reader of cosmology. Sidney Sheres

When it comes to this book, the title says it all! This is a book filled with several photographs and articles about majestic isles all around the globe. This book contains photographs and information from islands such as, The Galapagos islands, Japan, Ireland, Bali, New Zealand, and the isles of Seychelles!
This is a very good book and I highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in traveling to exotic locations or just enjoys good photography!
For further information on other islands from around the world, I recommend, "Isles of the South Pacific" as well.

No good maps, too detailed.......2007-03-09

We picked this up for a week-long sailing charter out of Tampa. There is way too much information in here and no really good maps. (Certainly not any larger maps.) We wanted to locate good anchorages for day-fun and overnights.... This caters mostly to people who are looking to dock at a marina. I found the book confusing and not well indexed.... I was hoping for a bareboat charterer's guide like we have found for the Virgin Islands -- This is not it.

West Florida Cruising Guide Most Helpful.......2006-03-18

Claiborne Young is his usual, informative self in compiling this excellent guide to cruising the Western Florida Region. He provides ample information including photos, detailed descriptions, waypoints and specifics useful to both sailors and power boaters. I highly recommend this book to anyone planning to cruise the beautiful Western Florida waters.

Great for the novice or expert.......2006-02-09

CLaiborne, like all his books, does an outstanding job. There is little to guess at, and he takes no chances in describing areas. If he says it is shallow, it is shallow. If he says do not go there without risk taking, then heed his advice. It would be nice if this book covered all of west FLA, but you have to buy another to cover the upper part.

Cruising Guide to Western Florida.......2000-04-18

This much-needed guide provide a wealth of useful information for the cruising sailor. Written in an enthusiastic and readable style, the author invites the reader to explore the varied cruising grounds of Western Florida. Of great value in this coastline of difficult channels is the detailed information given for each approach, including low water depths in shoal channels. Another feature is a listing of the charts (by number) to cover each area. Photographs and non-navigational charts are also shown throughout the book. Altogether, an informative and useful guide.

Of limited value.......2004-10-28

While useful for armchair sailing, it is no substitute for the appropriate charts. It's really an attempt to bridge the gap between a Rand McNally map and NOAA charts, which I guess it does, but it has no really good use on board. Buy the charts.

Only fair.......2003-08-06

While this collection does work with the author's cruising guide, it in no way replaces the need for the actual charts. I had hoped the author would have applied a consistent format in terms of depth coloring, lat/lon demarcation and Loran lines. All are variable from page to page. Compass roses are not consistently avaialable. The large scale chart showing the location of the individual pages is not clear and does not even show the first few pages at all. The volume I bought had 8 pages inverted, further adding to the difficulty. My advice is pass on this edition.

this one of the sweetvalley series can be read to keep in tune with the series. the book revolves around the upcomin' prom and jessica and liz's date dilemmas. jessica has an ingenious idea she along with Lila rate the dudes of SVU. liz has to choose between todd and devon whitelaw.

I found this book interesting at least this time 2 guys are fighting over Liz and not Jessica who is totally unpopular with the guys this minute. That rating idea was good but she and Lila got caught what a shame. It would of been interesting to see who they pick. As for Liz, she is too wishy-washy. I mean just pick one already. Todd is the one that's right for her and Devon should give Jess a chance she's not as bad as people think. They think on the same wavelength and then have their ideas blow up in their face. She could fall in love. I just want to know how Jordan is going to handle having 2 dates at the same time. I can't wait till the next one. As for Enid I think she and that Blubber guy should go out and she should give the poor guy a chance, so what if he's not a genius.

I can't believe that the Twins are going to be 17 and they are moving on to the 12th grade. This is quite a surprise. I don't know if you know but at the sweet vallley page they told the next super and it is called Last Wish. It is when the twins turn 17!!!! This book is great but is sad because the series is coming to a end. (thats the way they made it sound) I have ordered the 2 & 3 book in the series but what is the 4th??????
