Examining uncharted waters.......2001-07-08

Every other book I have seen on this subject focuses on the easy parts - interviewing and selection. This book discusses these things, but spends more time on the hard part of hiring, finding good applicants. There is a lot of great information about all the many sources for finding good candidates.

I think it should also be noted that the writing style is a pleasant difference. There's a lot of dry humor and a fresh perspective that you just don't see in many business books. I learned a lot and enjoyed the journey.

Throw out you other books on recruiting!.......2001-06-03

In a little over a hundred pages, this book gives sound advice on every aspect of finding success when recruiting employees for your company or small business. It's easy to understand and really takes the mystery out of the hiring process. After making all of the mistakes in hiring, I have been so much more prepared when undertaking this responsibility. I feel like I received "insider advice" that will improve all aspects of hiring, and the obvious bonus will be a better trained, harmonious work environment.

We can only be as good as the employees who represent our company. Good decision making saves time and money!

The best river book you'll ever love........2002-03-27

Ann Zwinger is a peerless writer. Each paragraph, sentence, and word is like a drop of sunlit dew; sparkling and yet sublime. You need a dictionary sometimes, but her great use of the King's English raises your consciousness without being tiring or boring. Each sentence invites a tour to the next, just as Zwinger's favorite river, the Green River in Wyoming and Utah, always seems to have just one more tantalizing view around the next bend.

Mrs. Zwinger combines notes from several trips on the Green into a single, seamless narrative traversing the river from its source to its meeting with the Colorado. The only areas left out are the Fontanelle and Flaming Gorge reservoirs, which are but temporary vandalizations by the Bureau of Reclamation.

The book visits the river both from a naturalist's and a historian's viewpoint, with plenty of metaphors and visualization of an an almost lyrical nature included. It is never-ending delight to read Mrs. Zwinger's loving prose about one of the few still partially wild places in our country. You can close your eyes every paragraph or two, and be magically transported to the scenes and events she unfolds. The book also has a gently humorous quality, as when Mrs. Zwinger describes clouds of mosquitoes, and losing a Dutch oven in the murky water.

Mrs Zwinger's knowledge of geography is absolutely correct when she points out that the Green River is the true master stream of the Colorado watershed, and that only a historical accident has resulted in the former "Grand" river being renamed as the "Colorado".

I should note that the author is also a gifted artist and cartographer. Her maps at each chapter's start are excellent guides, and her numerous charcoal sketches of plants, birds, tools such as the old Green River knife, and the like, more than make up for lack of photographs in the book. Indeed, such would only be distractive.

Mrs. Zwinger's last sentence in the book, penned as the Green River meets the Colorado at the foot of Stillwater Canyon, reads "I do not want to hear the river ending." This is an apt sentiment as applied to her book as well.

This was one of the first books I ever read on the West. Since then, I hunt up and read everything she writes. I have never been disappointed. You may wish to read ""Wind in the Rock" and "The Mysterious Lands", among others. I close by simply stating that any library that doesn't have this fabulous book on the West, the river, and the human spirit, is incomplete.

Good information on golf fitness.......2004-11-14

This book showed me what stretches to do for golf. The strength training section is good also. Although it is not complete for a workout program, the pictures are of good quality and easy to follow directions. I also used Patrick Leonardi's book called:
The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer or Better, isbn 1933023090 to help me greatly with my golf swing. After reading Leonardi's book, I now have much more control over my golf swing. In addition, I no longer slice off the tee and have gained a lot more distance. I recommend Boris Kuzmic's book for golf fitness and Patrick Leonardi's book for learning how to shoot lower scores.

Does the job of a phrasebook, but hardly ideal.......2006-01-04

Lonely Planet's BALTIC PHRASEBOOK covers the languages of the so-called Baltic republics, Estonian, Latvia, and Lithuanian.

In terms of phrases, all three chapters cover the same ground. General matters like asking directions and shopping are included, as are more specialised things like visiting the doctor. The menu decoders are very helpful. Oddly enough, when a phrase contains a different word-form depending on what gender is spoken of, the order is "feminine/masculine" instead of the "masculine/feminine" of most phrasebooks and dictionaries.

In their coverage of grammar, however, each chapter differs. That on Lithuanian includes a discussion of noun morphology, although it only shows four out of the language's seven cases. This may enable the traveller with some prior experience with inflected languages, such as Latin or Russian, to construct sentences not found in the book. However, the chapter on Latvian doesn't give any information like that.

The book contains some general tourist information and maps for the Baltic republics, which makes it larger than it might be and somewhat redundant, as many travellers will already have a specialized guidebook for the region.

This phrasebook may not be an essential purchase for someone spending only a few days in the region. Most young people in these three countries speak admirable English, and older shopkeepers can be addressed in Russian without problems (the guidebook line that shopkeepers here take offense at being addressed in Russian seems to be a myth).

Incredibly Helpful.......2004-04-04

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone spending more than a week in the Baltics! Last year, I spent a semester in Lithuania, and this book made the transition much easier! From going to the pharmacy to buy flu medication, to trying to find out where the outdoor market was, to telling a doctor that I had hurt my knee -- this book was constantly by my side and helped me be very independent while in a foriegn country. I was also able to learn a lot of phrases that I wouldn't have in my Lithuanian class. My only complaint is that sometimes the phonetic guide was a bit confusing, but this rarely interfered with my communication (if it does, you can just show the phrase to the person you are trying to speak with).

Actually, I love all "Lonely Planet" phasebooks and travel guides. You can't go wrong with them. These are the road warriors in our collection. They are worn, used and helpful! I want to own stock in Lonely Planet!

So you ask, "isn't there a later edition available?" Don't let that stop you. They are using a winning format and when it comes to speaking at least Lithuanian, little has changed (Lithuanian is a really, really, really old language!)

The book is concise and compact (3.5 x 5 x 1/2). It easily fits in any pocket. That is a major selling point. It is the perfect size to take along.

It has an abreviated pronunciation guide compared the single language versions and no dictionary. That comes form having to divide the space between three languages, so it can't go as in depth. Still,all the essentials are here. If you are planning a few days in each place, you'll be fine.

By the way, when you go to the Baltics, look for a copy of the "In Your Pocket Series" available at the airport or in the major hotels. It will be a great help to you. You can also find it online through a simple web search.

Good idea and thrilling, but the killer was too predictable!.......2001-03-09

This book started out really interesting and thrilling but really faded out in the end. It started out being a thriller and ended up being sci-fi. The killer is too predictable and is really unlikely.

The main character, Abby, is a senior in high school and the captain of the cheerleading squad. Everything seems to be going great for her, until she's brutally attacked and left for dead on the football field at the school. As she recovers from a coma, she realizes that someone attacked her and might strike again. She starts to get visions that her friends are in danger. She warns them and one by one they turn up dead. Abby knows she must stop this killer who will do anything to hurt Abby and the ones she loves.

I read the book Spring Break and it was a great book.I liked the book because it had a lot of suspension and action.It kept me reading to see what would happen next.I liked the part when the four hunters were on the side of the road with the main characters family and then one of the hunters got out a ax about to hit the dad of the main characters but then out of know where the police came.If there was a second book I would defenatley read it.

A Creepy School Year.......2003-06-14

It all started with a boy named Ted. Ted played football. he was always looking for trouble. Even though he gets into trouble he still doesn't get cut from the team, because the coach thinks he is the best player on the team. Everyone thinks the coach is not fair because he keeps ted on the team and not them, when they get into trouble. Ted got in a fight with another kid and got into trouble. I gave it a 5 star because it is very interesting.If you read it I think you would really like it. It also involves love, football, and fighting.I hope you enjoy it too!

Ever since the wildcats lost the championship peaple have been acting strange.Cindy Prescott, a cheerleader, gets very suspicious when people start disappearing mysteriouly and even dying. Spike is the cutest guy in school and everyone has been hearing a lot of things about him.... like every girl that has gone out with him never was saw again! Sarah the girl that likes him keeps hearing the rumor and ignores them.... she thiks that they're all lies. When she goes out with him she finally findes out that all the rumors were true.
