i am doing Ph.D. in molecular biology and this book is very useful in the cloning and genetic engineering portion. i read this book from the library. it is the bible of genetic engineering and great text book for the subject.it gives a comprehensive study with minute details and recent advances. overall worth purchasing.

This book is sweet and to the point, and we loved that it has an Malawian/African-looking boy on the cover, and featured inside, because my wife and I are adopting from Ethiopia. We're very glad for the purchase.

He's Got the Whole World in His Hands.......2007-05-07

I purchased this book for my son before his arrival. I love the song, and I was absolutely captivated by the beautiful illustration of the child on the front cover. I've subsequently given it as a gift several times! The illustrations are magnificent, and of course, the song is a classic. My son, now 20 months, loves books I can sing, and I pulled this out for him last week. He now finds it himself and brings it to me repeatedly. He is as captivated by the gorgeous illustrations as I am. The choice of subject-matter is simple and deeply moving. We send out a big "Thank you!" to Kadir Nelson for creating this warm and touching work of art! I am sure it will remain one of my favorite books to give as a gift!

Kadir Nelson's illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. That is to be expected of this talented and unique artist. Although I've heard the song a hundred times through my life, hearing them in the middle of the night recently was life-changing. After a c-section birth I was feeling that warm but worrisome, awed but aware, content but concerned high emotion stress that most new Moms feel. In the middle of the night I awakened to hear the words of this story being read to my one week old daughter by her Daddy, my husband. Although he was reading to HER, it was a lullaby to me and it restored my usual assuredness and happiness. It was a wonderful reminder that "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." I look forward to sharing this story as my girl grows and hope she learns to trust the sentiment as well as appreciate the beautiful things in life, like Kadir Nelson's lovely pictures.

Reviewer mcHAIKU is dumbfounded because Kadir Nelson's optimistic & colorful paintings should inspire everyone to at least say "Thank You" or "AMEN" !

What a wonderful book to share with children, and not only in *Sunday School* . . . the song has been a favorite for years at youth camps. Those places & occasions where we are free to voice such beliefs may become fewer. Our reaction should therefore be more convincing.

I love the fact that Nelson drew (& colored) the "kid drawings" - - with his left hand! Take a moment to appreciate a children's book that pictures almost entirely black people. And don't call that artificial. I call it necessary to the self-image of a large segment of our population. Let's share Nelson's inspirational book that wants readers (and listeners) to become INVOLVED, then get out & do some things that could make it happen for everybody, everywhere.

Fascinating.......2007-06-01

I found this book to be an overall wonderful read. Its characters, from the older grandmothers to the youngest children, are complex and well thought out. I could not find many cliches in this book, as everyone has strengths and flaws.
I enjoyed this as much as Cynthia Voigt's "Dicey's Song", in regards to familial relationships and attention to details such as clothing, food, and weather. Being of Chinese ethnicity, I particularly appreciated the intricities of the Korean culture.
This is the first book that has moved me to write a review. I highly recommend this to both young and old readers alike. It is a refreshing glimpse into a foreign world, both historically and culturally.

Not bad, also one I would not highly recommend........2002-09-30

I borrowed this book form the library last month. The one thing I don't like about the book is the part where Pyungsoo tells Junehee that she looks like "an Africa" when she came back from vacationing with her family. If Koreans/Asians think Africans look strange then I wouldn't want my children reading this book(when I do have children). It seems that Asians dislike Blacks and it shows up everywhere,from business/economics to publications and also socially. Otherwise the book is okay,and it gives adolescents good knowledge of Korean culture and lifestyle.

Not For Children Only.......2002-08-22

Since this book is told through the voice of an 11-year old it has been deemed "Young Adult Fiction". In reality it is a fascinating portrait of Korean life and traditions.

In Korean tradition, a son is supposed to take care of his parents, and a daughter's job is to take care of her husband and her in-laws. A family without a son, is a family without a caretaker. Women who do not produce sons are shunned and are mistreated.

The oldest child is also given special treatment. The protagonist's mother is referred to not by name, but as the oldest daughter's mother. As the second daughter, of four, Junehee must navigate between her oldest sister's demands, her withdrawn father, her domineering grandmother and her mother's sadness. The family also includes a servant-girl, a young woman of 19 whose parents can no longer afford to feed her.

This book deals with the stark realities of life outside the United States. For young first generation Asians, I think this is a fascinating portrait of their parent's childhood. For those interested in Asian culture and society, at any age, this is a very valuable book.

Not so interesting........2002-02-20

Even though I'm not finish with this book, I think that it is really boring. It doesn't have anyhting interesting about it. Well, maybe in the begining because that was what caught my attention but when it got to the middle it was just plain boring. I think that it shouldn't babble about how the parents fight and talk about how Pyungsoo is doing.

A jewel of a novel anyone of any culture can relate to..........2001-06-15

"We could not quite visualize houses sliding down the mountains, pigs and cows swimming, or people drowning in rain." The Long Season of Rain is an exceptional novel that immediately grasps its readers' attention and sustains it until the very last page. Set in South Korea in the summer of 1969, this novel explores the plight of the oppressed female in a traditional Asian society. With the advent of the Korean changma-- the rainy season, a male orphan comes to live in the Lee household. After having given birth to four beautiful, healthy daughters, the protagonist's mother is treated as an indentured servant and cannot inquire after her husband's activities outside home. Adhering to the belief that only sons are capable of taking care of their aged parents, the protagonist's mother wishes to adopt the orphan, but her plea is silenced by the disapproval of her husband and mother-in-law. Both heart-rending and heart-warming, The Long Season of Rain is a timeless masterpiece that deserves to be read by everyone across time and space.
