ASTD Books are Great!.......2001-12-06

I gave this book only 3 stars, not because of any lack of quaility. The content is not new. But the format and usability is worth 5 stars. This is a very functional book if you're involved in organizational training. This book has several diferent modules to use in short or long-term training. If you work in organization training -- this is a must buy. Very functional!

Building your own kayak.......2007-02-24

My daughter and I are building kayaks in an Adult Ed class using this book as our bible. Luckily, there is an instructor who has built 2 kayaks before using this book. The book contains all you need to know, albiet that you have to spend time reading the words repeatedly because there aren't enough sketches to show what is intended. There are lots of photos, but they don't convey the same amount of info as a sketch with dimensions. But, if you keep re-reading the book to figure our how to make the jigs, you'll end up with a piece of art, that you can kayak in.

All You need.......2006-10-19

If you want to build a greenland kayak then this is all you need. Instructions are clear and not wordy. It also has sections on making paddles and paddling clothing. The style shown in this book has slight deviations from the original greenland technique but he specifically states all the changes. I built a kayak from this book with my only help being a second pair of hands, and i am only 15. The boat was exactly to his designs and it is fast, fairly stable, and responsive.

Terrific book with lots of details and pictures.......2006-08-01

This is a terrific book. I bought Robert Morris' book on Skin on Frame building and had many questions. Chris Cunningham's book provides lot of details and answered my questions. Both books compliment each other and since I do not know much about this process, I consider both required reading before I build.
I like how this book provides all details on what type of lashing to get, the Eskimo knot, fabric and type of material for sewing seams. It focuses on 1 type of boat only, which allows the author to provide lots of details and pictures during the build. I probably will not use the 2 part polyurethane finish as it shown in the book. I think I would rather use the water based exterior polyurethane as shown in the Morris book. If you plan on building a skin on frame, you have to get this book. Even if you don't plan to build one, it is a great book for those interested in this process.

Great detail and instruction.......2006-04-19

This book was great for a novice builder like myself. The intructions were clear and easy to follow. I like the way the instruction passages started with the result intended followed by detailed instructions.
The jigs were especially helpfull in achieving the results intended.

Another view of skin-on-frame building........2005-08-26

Cunningham provides a very detailed view of the building techniques he uses, complete with jigs and adaptations that work for him. He includes chapters on clothing, equipment, rolling and variations, which you may find useful. This book is a useful addition to Morris' "Building Skin-on-Frame Boats" for its practical tips and a different view of the process. A good value and worthwhile addition to the boatbuilding library.

I just get back from Oahu for my engagement trip. I can say, all my 7-day trip is on this book, from attractives to restaurants. The informations are accurate and comprehensive. Highly recommended guide book.

A Must-Have Guide.......2007-03-22

My sister-in-law and I used this book daily on our trip to Oahu. We started referring to it as "the Bible"! Lots of info but not overwhelming. Fun tips on how to navigate popular tourist attractions. All information was accurate and up to date for our January 2007 trip. Highly recommended.

Great For Quick Reference.......2004-11-23

I am a fan of the Lonely Planet line, and this map is no exception. For what it is, it is excellent. The map is a laminated, accordion-fold map of the portions of Oahu and Honolulu that most people want to visit. It is a great size and format, but would be even better if it was just a bit shorter to make it better able to fit in pockets. The only reasons that I gave it four instead of five stars is that not all Honolulu is depicted, making it less than totally useful for exploring out of the way places (although it does cover Waikiki and downtown Honolulu well, redeeming it largely), and the scale is generally so small as to be difficult to read, especially while driving, the exceptions being the downtown Honolulu and the Waikiki maps, which are altogether excellent and very user-friendly.

I do recommend this map to people visiting Hawaii. It will be perfectly adequate for 99 percent of all tourists, but if you plan on venturing beyond downtown Honolulu or Waikiki, you need to consider a more comprehensive map. The single most useful map for most travelers to Oahu is the Nelles Maps edition titled "Honolulu and O'ahu," which I recommend highly. The only drawback to the Nelles map is that it is a full-size fold-out map, making it a bit unwieldy at times; therein lies the reason that I use both the Lonely Planet and Nelles maps, this map is best for on the go, quick reference use, while the Nelles map is best for trip and route-specific planning.

This is such a beautifully written book - I have recommended it to others and each one who has read it has adored it. I've always loved Laura Ingall Wilder's books and was reading about her on Wikipedia the other day, when I read the entry on Rose Wilder Lane and was intrigued. I took out this book and Old Hometown from the libary and am hooked - they are beautifully written and evocative books. What a wonderful storyteller! Let the Hurricane Roar really does give you an idea of what the pioneers and their wives went through - her descriptions of the wife's plight were especially moving and took away any self-pity I might ever feel for a bad day at home!

R.W. Lane was a writer LONG before her mother ever picked up a pencil. While The previous reviewers found Let the Hurricane Roar to be very similar to the LIW books, there is a reason. R.W. Lane based her novel on her grandparents' experiences in homesteading. (It's not surprising, then, for people to find similarities....) What is surprising to most people is the fact that the Little House Series was virtually unpublishable in its original form -- until Ms. Lane edited her mother's very basic manuscripts, giving them style, flow and poise. Her own career ended up suffering terribly from this devotion to her mother. I found Hurricane to be vastly superior to the LIW books (which should rightly be credited to RWLane, as well); the content, pacing and structure were far better developed, as were the characterizations. Brilliant depiction of the trials of homesteading on the plains.

this story is really intresthing. it is just like on the banks of plum creek. i dont understand why they traveled west. But molly is the only 1 watching the baby while david travel back west to find a job i dont now why she and the baby didnt go with him.

This is a good book but if you are expecting it to be written in the style of Laura Ingalls Wilder's series, you have a surprise coming. Rose Wilder Lane is a good writer, but in an extremely different style from that of her mother...

This book is great!.......1998-10-17

This is a really good book, and although it's similar to books written by Laura Ingells Wilder, it's not that similar. Even though the characters live in a house very much like the one described in 'On The Banks Of Plumb Creek,' it is most like 'The Long Winter.'Even though it is similar to these two books, it doesn't matter because except for a few minor things, it is completly different from the original Little House Books.
