From the author: Two experiments examined whether or not rats formed stimulus classes on a basis of same response (i.e., shared common response) during overtraining. In Experiment 1, rats were trained on two discriminations in a straight runway, then trained on conditional successive discriminations in a Y maze. Group C, in which rats were required to choose the same goal box when the original positive stimulus or the negative one was presented on the entrance of each goal box, learned shift problems faster than Group IC, in which rats were required to choose the right goal box when one of positive stimuli was presented and to choose the left goal box when the other was presented as well as negative stimuli, after overtraining, but not after criterion training. In Experiment 2, rats were trained on two discriminations in the Y maze, and then they were trained on either whole reversal (Group W) in which two tasks were reversed or partial reversal (Group P) in which one of two tasks was reversed in a straight runway. Group W learned their reversal faster than Group P after overtraining, but not after criterion training. These results indicate that the same response is a factor affecting stimulus classes formation in rats.

Spatial S-R compatibility of visual and auditory signals: implications for human-machine interface design [An article from: Displays]
K.W.L. Chan , and
A.H.S. Chan
Manufacturer: Elsevier

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Displays, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
This study investigated spatial stimulus-response (S-R) compatibility for visual and auditory signals presented on longitudinally and transversely oriented axes. The objective was to establish data in order to make ergonomics recommendations for multi-sensory interface design in control consoles. The results showed strong stimulus-response compatibility effects. Relatively faster reaction times (RTs) and lower error percentages (EPs) were found for the compatible S-R conditions than for the incompatible conditions. Other than the main S-R compatibility effect, a stimulus-hand (S-H) compatibility effect was also found when there was no clear stimulus-response compatibility. Responses made to visual signals were faster than those to auditory signal, suggesting that the processing of visual signals dominated processing of auditory ones. Response speed increased and accuracy decreased with the adoption of crossed hand posture. Response speed decreased with the length of the warning time interval. The findings in this experiment were translated into practical ergonomics recommendations for signal-response layout, stimulus-hand layout, hand condition, warning time interval, and methods of presenting visual and auditory signals. These recommendations were made with a view to improving control console design in order to enhance operator and overall system performance.

Book Description
There is no clear-cut causal relationship between international trade, agricultural expansion and tropical deforestation. Academics, policy makers and the public are all tempted by simplistic solutions to complex problems.
In order to establish the true causal factors involved in this critical area of environmental decline the authors of this study present case studies ranging over three continents. Using ample and detailed statistics the book shows that the focus on analysis of deforestation must be applied as much to the misguided policies of national and regional authorities as to the forces of trade and globalization. Further, a critical perspective on the historical context of human use of forest areas must be adopted, looking at such issues as systems of land tenure. The primary aim of the book is to highlight the need to seek solutions in far-reaching institutional and policy reforms if the problem of tropical deforestation is to be tackled effectively.

Customer Reviews:
Really great, thoughtful book.......2007-08-07
Alternates between being inspirational and educational. Plan to get it for my biking friends when they hit 40 or 50. Lots of useful information and a good read.
Nice book.......2007-07-24
Right now I have half-read this book and I would like to say that I enjoy it very much. Since I have been a MTB enthusiast for years already this book is right for me. The reason why I like this book are topics covered and the unique approach how authors address them. For example, typically you can read about how to train for better bike riding, but here you will find a topic on how to train to recover from biking. And there are more unique topics and interesting interviews.
This definitely shouldn't be the first book that bicycle addict should read, however for a seasoned rider this book is a "must read".
This is an Excellent Book.......2007-06-27
As a devoted cyclist, I found this book to be a valuable resource. I learned much about the best ways to ride, how to eat properly, make sure that you get the proper fit on a bike, and much more information. One slight criticism - it is too slanted toward mountain biking rather than touring, but that reflects the interests of the authors. This book is a real keeper.
Great Cycling Book.......2007-04-04
I really enjoyed this book. It presented many cycling topics: general fitness, longevity, training, psychological aspects of the sport, and touring. I especially enjoyed the inspirational interviews like the one with a guy who raced bikes in the '20s, represented the USA in the '32 and '36 Olympics, and now in his 90s, he STILL rides 150 miles a week!
Great book.
Fantastic Book on Cycling can change your life!.......2007-02-26
I ran across this book completely by accident. I was in the bookstore perusing magazines and someone had left a copy on the rack. I picked it up, flipped briefly through the book, and decided to buy it. For a 49 year old that's just getting back into cycling after being off since the early 90's, this was a terrific book. It provides relevent information for every aspect (both mental and physical) of developing a plan for lifelong health and well being through bicycling and other exercise. I think the interviews are great and provide insight into the lives of some of cycling's pioneers and gives a glimpse of what we all deal with as we age. The information in this book can change your quality of life, if practically applied. 35 days after completing this book, I'm 11 lbs lighter and feel so much better!

Book Description
Saving The Last Grizzlies
As this action-packed sequel to Bearstone opens, Cloyd Atcitty and his rancher friend Walter Landis are heading back into the mountains, this time chasing the old man's dream of finding a lost Spanish gold mine. But when Cloyd hears that a mother grizzly and her cubs have been sighted nearby, he immediately hopes it might be the mate of the bear he had tried to save from a hunter the previous summer.
When the mother bear dies in a tragic accident, Cloyd realizes that if her cubs don't survive, grizzlies will disappear from Colorado forever. He refuses to leave the cubs, determined to stay with them until they can den. But with winter deepening in the mountains, can Cloyd himself survive?
Customer Reviews:
Bears dancing.......2006-11-29
I think that this is a good book and it won the ALA best book award. It flows well and makes colorful pictures in your mind. The book is easy to follow because it is told from one person's point of view. Because the book is not a page-turner, you can pay more attention to the important details. I connected to Cloyd because the book is told from his point of view and I understood his feelings. I enjoyed the author's style of writing because it is not too descriptive, so it was easy to read. For example "Cloyd felt like he was there, and one of those bears was charging him." Some of the sentences are cliffhangers. An example of one is: "The four of them listened until the sound stopped, and then they turned silently into the night." Some of the book was boring; some of it wasn't. What made some of it boring was that it went on and on in the same scene again and again. I think this story could happen in real life. Historical fiction lovers should only read this book.
Beardance.......2006-11-06
Have you ever wondered if there was another world or a spirit world? If you have then you and Cloyd Atcity have something in common. Cloyd Atcity, and Walter Landis are the two main characters.
Will Hobbs is also the author of Bearstone, as well as Beardance and another of adventure tales. Although there are two main characters, there is one the book is focused around and that is Cloyd Atcity. Cloyd is a Ute, and used to not care about anything, but in the last book he changed. He started to do well in school, and helped Walter around the farm. He also used to be extremely stubborn, but now he has lightened up. He has a passion for bears, and so do his people. This story takes place in the mountains of Colorado. Cloyd and Walter both go into the mountains again one last time, Cloyd really wants to find the grizzly bear and cubs that everybody had been talking about. Walter has another case of gold fever and wants to find an ore of gold that was supposedly hidden somewhere in the mountains.
This book is truly a good book. It drew me in and I could really picture it like it was a movie. This is the second book I've read by Will Hobbs and I have enjoyed both. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the mountains and bears.

BearDance.......2000-12-01
If you like the outdoors, then you will love Beardance. The book takes place in the wilderness of Colorado. The Weminuche Wilderness. When I was reading this book, I was sad, fascinated and surprised. The book had some gory parts in it, that is what made it surprising. Some parts in the book made me fill like I was actually there in the wild with the grizzly bears. The characters remind me of my Grandpa and I because I used to always go camping, when I had the chance, with my grandfather, especially in Colorado. The characters in this book are Cloyd; he's the boy living on a farm with his grandpa. The other character is Walter Ladis, the old guy with the cowboy hat. Irsa is the girl that they call the grizzly woman because she knows a whole lot about grizzly bears. ` He had a sensation that he was moving on four legs.'' When he looked around behind him, he noticed his tracks, and they were bear tracks.'
A must for lovers of the outdoors........1999-10-27
Will Hobbs has an amazing way of taking the reader inside the book and planting him in the middle of the mountains along with Cloyd. I thought Bearstone was excellent; but it doesn't compare to this one. To think of a young boy devoting his life to keeping the bear cubs alive is awesome. My students loved Far North and will probably love this one even more. I highly recommend all of Hobb's books to my reading students. So far, none of the books have failed to be an instant hit. This one will be the next. I can't wait to read any new ones he writes; he just doesn't write fast enough.
The book is well worth reading any time or any age........1999-06-10
Beardance is a book you just don't put it down until you finish it. On a scale from 1-5, I would rate this book a four and a half because, it teaches children and adults about things that if you put your mind to something and you have enough determination, you can get anything done. Cloyd goes back to the mountains with the old man to find more grizzly bears in Colorado. He finds two little cuds and the Fish and Wildlife Department take them away. It wasn't easy for Cloyd to try to save them. I admire him for trying to save his little friends. I was reading this book for language arts class and I encourage any student or adult to read Will Hobb's works because they are very interesting and exciting. I recomended this book to anyone who likes grizzly bears or the mountains.
