Oh, those wacky gardeners! I think I'm going to be sick...........2004-06-11

Not the book to get if you're seeking to learn much about composting. Sure, there are some tidbits but overall the info presented is the basic stuff available free in pamphlets at garden stores, via internet, libraries, municipal fliers, etc., such as ratio of greens to browns.

The book is intended to be humorous and I suppose it may be to the ya-ya sisterhood crowd. The humor leans heavily on goofy puns and wacky scenes such as dressing up in whimsical costumes and performing ceremonies to stop bees from stinging. Tee-hee!
Oh, and they also do a compost "rap", ha ha! what a hoot!

If you still want it I'd give you mine but it's stewing in the compost pile.

More than just compost.......2004-01-29

You could read this book just for the fun of it. Or you could read it to get a thorough grounding in all the current basic reduce, re-use, recycle wisdom.

The writer works to City Farmer, an organization in Vancouver, Canada that specializes in urban agriculture and in enhancing the sustainability of our cities. The writer may spend some time as operator of a compost hotline but she knows an awful lot about all the ecological issues facing people who live in cities. Similarly, while she lives in Vancouver, her writing is relevant to almost all cities.

In the eight chapters she deals lightly with compost, bugs, cob houses, yard waste, water conservation, dog (and cat) poop, and critter control. Nowhere does the reader felled preached to. There is no "You ought to....or else" There are just gentle, humorous stories and observations. If you discovered something new to you (Wow! Bags of dog poop can explode in the compactor of a garbage truck! Who knew?) then maybe you might act on that. There is also a chapter on urban agriculture initiatives in New York and in Havana, and the issues facing the people involved in those cities. Each chapter ends with a generous list of resources, mostly publications, web sites and organizations.

There is so much delicious jam enfolding the pill of learning that you don't know you're swallowing it. This bok was a delight when it might have been a bore. I enjoyed it tremendously.

I bought this book for my husband as a present as we both enjoy horses and horse racing. He couldn't put it down. The book offers easy to read history that would fascinate anyone with or without an interest in horse racing. The reader becomes excited reading about such races as Secretariat and Affirmed. It renews or introduces interest in horses such as Whirlaway and Nashua. This is a readable book with the past performances (which are hard to read for the non-horse race handicapper) that can be used as a reference book, too. The book is nicely organized with chapters representing the great horses of the decades and brings the reader up to the present (2004). If you like sports and admire athletes - here's a book filled with the greatest of them all!

Bought this as a gift for my Dad. Huge horse racing fan. I guess this is a must have item. I personally have no idea. But he raved and raved about getting it. If you are shopping for a gift also get them the horse racing almanac.

Timeless classic.......2006-06-07

I don't know how to describe how wonderful this book is other than to say that after reading through this book for a week, I declared to my wife that I could spend an hour a day for the rest of my life reading this and be happy doing it. If you are a fan of the game, this is something you absolutely must have. It not only covers the champion horses organized by decade, but each horse's lifetime past performances are included. Anyone who has ever picked up a racing form should delight to see the history of the game in this format.

Interesting read, but sometimes inaccurate.......2005-11-12

Although I believe Sonny was trying to be honest in this book, Cher and Chastity Bono have both stated inaccurate information. Sonny & Cher have completely different stories regarding their initial meeting, and exactly when they stopped sleeping in twin beds and actually became "involved" with each other. I suspect it's due to the age factor. Cher was 16 when they met.... In the book Sonny claims they met in April 62, but that would have made Cher 15 at the time. I've heard their actual meeting at Aldo's occured in November of 62. I think Sonny just has some of his dates mixed up and who knows the truth about when their relationship became more than "platonic". At any rate, I had to laugh at Sonny's description of the lack of "fireworks" in the bedroom.....that was an obvious pot shot at Cher. Cher claims that before she had Chastity, she had 4 miscarriages. Sonny only recounts two, but for someone who claimed his relationship lacked "fireworks" in the bedroom, his "wife" sure had enough pregnancies.

Another interesting point is that Sonny and Cher's supposed marriage in 1964 was a ruse. I guess nobody bothered to confirm the fact that they weren't legally married. Oh sure, they married themselves in the bathroom of their house and exchanged cheap sterling rings (his said "CHER", hers "SONNY"--they're seen wearing these rings in photos throughout the 60's and featured prominently in their movie "Good Times"). They didn't actually legally marry until Chastity was 8 or 9 months old....sometime in the fall of 1969.

The most interesting part of the book, is Sonny's early work in the record industry (nobody can ever claim that Sonny was a slacker--he had tenacity and determination in everything he undertook), and especially his time spent with Phil Spector at Gold Star studios. His stories of Spector just confirm the weirdness that is Phil Spector. Spector was prone to fits of anger, hissy-fits and just general oddness. I laughed out loud as Sonny recounted Phil spending hours in his car trying to find the perfect driving position in which he'd look "coolest" (arm out the window, one finger on the wheel, sunglasses on or off?, back towards the window).

The whole Sonny & Cher relationship gets a little sad towards the end, and I found myself feeling sorry for Sonny. I suspect through his words, he still held a great deal of fondness for Cher, but the two of them just couldn't stop taking shots at each other in the press. I also have no doubt that despite Cher's tough exterior and constant rants about her terrible marriage to Sonny, she felt the same fondness towards him. Nobody who talks the way that Cher did to the press prior to Sonny's passing and then behaves the way that she did upon hearing of his death, and the ensuing funeral is being entirely truthful (hence the accusations of Cher "acting", and using his death as a publicity springboard). I suspect there were some deep, deep feelings there, but the two of them were both so stubborn and prideful that they couldn't get past the hurtful bantering.

Despite some inaccurate info. This book is still an interesting read as Sonny is mostly quite honest with his emotions.

What a great book! Sonny Bono had such great talent and it shows on every page. One of the best bios I have ever read. His life story and times with Sonny & Cher are so fascinating any way - but very well written in this book. You will not want to put this book down! (Unlike Cher's "The First Time." Big disappointment.)

You don't have to be the smartest,or the most talented person in the World to make it big,Sonny proved that.You have to believe in yourself.Sonny became a great songwriter,TV Star,Movie Star,Mayor of Palm Springs,and married some of the most beutifull Women I've ever seen.This book gives you the rise and fall,and rise and fall again of the most famous couple ever.You could never count on Sonny or Cher not to make another comeback.This book is very simple to read,and I enjoyed every page.Its tragic what happened to Sonny at the end,but he will be remembered always.

I loved this book. I wish everyone could know how genuine he was-- and how much love he felt for people. His wive's should have treated him better---especially Mary Bonen.

Good text on American Pop Music.......2004-12-05

I find this textbook to be very good, especially compared to those in its field.

Starting with a brief introduction, the textbook covers the basics of musical sound (beat, timbre, dynamics) and then touches on the elements and sources of popular music. The book then begins historically with minstrel songs ("Oh Susanna" and the like), Ragtime, the Blues, Jazz, Broadway, Tin Pan Alley, Latin Music, and finally Rock and Jazz Fusion (with a little bit of disco and punk).

What's great about this textbook is that even it is accessible for undergraduate college students and even high schoolers, the material is presented in a scholarly fashion. I've not always found that to be the case when it comes to writings about rock music. You can find a lot of fluff out there.

The textbook also has a companion 5-CD set purchased separately. I feel it is extremely helpful, and the book refers to the recordings ALL THE TIME. It's really necessary. There are some songs referred to where Campbell was unable to get the copyright permission, but he has a Discography list at the back of the book for those interested.

This book gets four stars mainly because it's so light on rock after the sixties. The eighties has very little material, and there is only one hip-hop example (Public Enemy). The book really needs a new edition.

Don't use this book for a course on rock alone, but it works great as a text on popular music.

and took his class. I'm pretty sure he even knows me by name. I bought the book, but never read it. I've yet to return the book, so someday in the future, i may read it. But if that book is one tenth as good as his lectures and computer notes were, then i give it my full endoresement.

Fun, entertaining, and informative........1999-09-27

I am a college instructor and have decided to use this book in my History of Popular Music class. I found this book to be very thorough and concise and stays focused on relevant material. I also appreciate the use of historical context when describing a period of music. This book is fun, entertaining, and very informative as it relays the development of our pop music. A must read for music lovers--even if you are not in school!

Excellent coverage of the evolution of music in America.......1999-09-03

The Beat Goes On provides an excellent view of how we got from "Oh, Susanna" to "My Sharonna".The only problems are caused by trying to cover so much material in one book. Anyone who wants to learn why what we listen to sounds they way it does should get this book. Hihgly recommended.
