Book Description
"'To career’ used to mean to swerve wildly or to go swiftly. In this beautifully argued, richly documented, original, liberating work, Arthur, Inksen, and Pringle demonstrate that the new careers once more are about swift swerves, unexpected agency, and enacted opportunities and constraints. Readers will think about the future in ways they never imagined possible."
--Karl E. Weick, University of Michigan
The New Careers offers a major new approach to the concept of career and the relationship of the individual to the contemporary workplace. It shows that our traditional conceptions of careers are rooted in the stable conditions of the industrial state model, which has dominated the 20th century, and that new models, are now needed.

Principles of Soil and Plant Water Relations combines biology and physics to show how water moves through the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. This text explores the instrumentation and the methods used to measure the status of water in soil and plants. The basic methods of tensiometry, pyschrometry, stomatal porometry, as well as newer methods of tension infiltrometry; time domain reflectometry are examined. Principles are clearly presented with the aid of diagrams, anatomical figures, and images of instrumentation. An added feature includes short biographies of important scientists at the end of each chapter.
Intended for graduate students in plant and soil science programs, this book also serves as a useful reference for agronomists, plant ecologists, and agricultural engineers
* Principles are presented in an easy-to-understand style
* Heavily illustrated with more than 200 figures; diagrams are professionally drawn
* Anatomical figures show root, stem, leaf, and stomata
* Figures of instruments show how they work
* Book is carefully referenced, giving sources for all information
* Struggles and accomplishments of scientists who developed the theories are given in short biographies.

Soil, Plant, Water & Atmosphere.......2005-11-02
This book is an attempt to create SPAC Soil, Plant, Atmosphere Continuum. But looks more like a series of lecture notes. Written in clear manner covering aspects of water in soil, plant and atmosphere. Each chapter also has a brief biography of famous person responsible in the topic discusses from Richards to Nielsen, Hertz, Boltzmann etc. Also contained instruments, and anecdote behind them such as how disc permeameter evolved and patented.
In Chapter 2 the author stressed the importance of using SI units. But other chapters still use non SI units eg. dynes/cm3, bar.
The author tries to incorporate many modern instruments, but some classical methods and theories still used. such as using wheatstone bridge to measure conductivity and electrical analogue.

Book Description
Since the time of Knute Rockne, fans have been drawn to Notre Dame for reasons that go far beyond the normal allegiances. Just as Ohioans root for Ohio State, Los Angelenos for UCLA, Catholics everywhere root for Notre Dame. Over the decades their devotion to team and institution has become a religion in ways that exceed metaphor. Millions in number, these modern-day fans treat the Notre Dame campus as a pilgrimage site, and six times a year, for each home game, the action moves from the profane to the sacred. For the fans, Notre Dame has become a symbol of the American immigrant bootstrap ethos of hard work, of the Catholic faith, and of the notion that the two entwined can only produce the good life. Touchdown Jesus is the intimate chronicle of Notre Dame's 2004 football season as seen through the eyes of a fan base unlike any other.
A tapestry of vivid character portraits and descriptive narrative, Touchdown Jesus explores this phenomenon and reveals the story behind one of the highest-profile head coach firings in the history of college football. When the story begins in September 2004, it had been sixteen years since the Fighting Irish had won a national championship, and eleven years since the team had even been a contender. The Irish were coming off their third losing season in five years, a span of failure that had sparked fears of permanent decline. Over the course of the season, the target of the fans' angst grew to include not only head coach Tyrone Willingham, but also the caretakers of the university, whom many fans believed were sacrificing football to the prerogatives of an elite academe. As the losses piled up, the arguments for and against Willingham went to the very core of the identity of the university and its fan base: the pressure to win, the Christian ideal, and the uniquely American role of big-time athletics in higher education -- Notre Dame football at the center of it all.
Borrowing its title from the celebrated mosaic of Christ the Teacher that adorns the south facade of the university library and overlooks the football field, Touchdown Jesus is the story of faith and fanaticism and a university struggling to maintain elite football, elite academics, and traditional Catholicism -- each an imperative, without any room for compromise.
Customer Reviews:
Domer Nation.......2007-02-10
This book is highly recommended for anyone who wants an understanding of the Notre Dame football fan experience from the perspective of a recent alum.
If you have not attended a game in South Bend, this book will make you feel as if you have never missed one.
The pull of the place to folks who have never attended a class at any University is attempted to be put in words....It is a must read for a College Football fanatic.
Changing ND in the Internet Age.......2006-06-08
First, I have to admit for clarity that Scott's book includes about 1 page about my brother and I. I also signed the C4C (if you don't know what that means, read the book). So I guess that makes me biased.
Following the 2003 season, I didn't think I would face a worse situation than what unfolded in 2004. Bad losses to good teams, even worse losses to bad teams and the eventual misfirings on trying to land the "savior" coach at ND. In a phrase, it was a CF.
Now, through the writings of Scott, I relived that season but through the eyes of others who maybe lived and died a bit more with the game of ND football than I. Going in I thought the book was going to be a more factual account of what happened in 2004. But Scott does more than tell the facts - he tells the story behind the facts. Through meeting subway alums and their history and the role that the Internet played in bringing change to ND football, this book tells a good story.
If you are not a ND fan, you might find this book limited in its contents. However, if you suffered through the past 10 years of ND football, then you must read this book. You will have a renewed passion for Our Lady.
Great job of describing why Notre Dame is different........2006-05-09
While Notre Dame haters will probably not care for this book, both fans of ND and those interested in college football in general will find it both fascinating and entertaining. By presenting stories of fans from around the country, as well as the historical conext of Notre Dame football, Mr Eden does a wonderful job of explaining how Notre Dame, warts and all, came to occupy a unique spot in college football: A small catholic university in the midwest with unparalleled football success and a truly national fan base.
An outstanding account of Notre Dame football for all audiences.......2006-01-28
"Touchdown Jesus" began as a small article describing the relationship between faith and fandom at Notre Dame, but evolved into a tour de force that introduces various Notre Dame enthusiasts from different backgrounds during a turbulent period for the University. These interested parties, many of whom author Scott Eden met tailgating prior to Irish football games, include university administrators, students, alumni, local residents, Internet posters, and "subway alumni," fans who did not attend the University but pledge die-hard allegiance to the University. To many of these fans, the direction of Notre Dame at the beginning of the 2004 football season was a cause for concern. The three pillars on which Irish enthusiasts take pride in--strong academics, nationally competitive football, and Catholic identity--were thought to be in crisis amidst alleged de-emphasis of football and aspirations to achieve similarity with elite, secular universities. The stories of the fans during this time are told through extensive research and personal interviews while detailing the events leading to the unexpected retirement of University President Father Edward Malloy and the firing of head football coach Tyrone Willingham.
Many authors have put forth books about Notre Dame, yet Scott Eden has produced a book that occupies a unique and important place in the Irish canon. A Notre Dame alumnus himself, Eden shares the passion for Notre Dame with the fans he describes, yet approaches the events with a detached, journalistic perspective. For the Notre Dame faithful, this book will serve as the definitive novel of this era, one that breaks ground in describing the events that occurred and the forces behind them. For others, Eden presents a piece that transcends a historical narrative by delving into the psychology behind devoted fandom. The result is a book that will be compelling for any audience.
Touched........2006-01-26
Eden's precise and poised prose moves his narrative forward with brisk pace of a hurry up offense while his honest reporting covers such a startling breadth of ground one can't help but wonder if he's playing conservatively. Coupling an incisive insight to situational analysis with a wry yet compassionate talent for character incorporation, Eden manages to play both sides of the ball without sacrificing either journalistic integrity or the story itself. Eden's presentation -- not only of the overarching subject matter, fandom at Notre Dame, but of the individuals that comprise it, and the love and folly that comprise their actions -- reveals more than an accomplished writer's deft touch, it reveals a writer touched by his investigation and, thus, to truly informed reporting.

An astonishing variety of experiences, all in or near the Big Apple, described with humor, insight, and enthusiasm. The authors' intimate knowledge and deep love for their city beam from every page. The directions and details are precise and easy to follow and the maps have just the right amount of information. Book Description
Even a child who is pure of heart
And does his homework neatly
May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms
And the moon is full completely
Henry Count Dorkula, the geeky new kid, claims to be a vampire. Mr. Talbot, faculty sponsor of the Watson Elementary School Werewolf Club, insists that vampires don't exist (being a werewolf himself, he should know about such things), but the members of the club aren't so sure. Henry seems to have Billy Furball, the most unsanitary member of the club, under some sort of spell. Billy's been following him around, calling him "Master."
Pretty soon stranger things begin to happen. There are no overripe tomatoes to throw at the annual Festival of San Irvingo. Then Mrs. Mildred Papescu's prize-winning Hubbard squash the size of a Volkswagen disappears. Before you can say "papaya," there's a serious fruit and vegetable shortage all over town. You wouldn't think there'd be a connection between a vampire on the loose and a fruit and vegetable crisis, but then, you're not one of the intrepid members of the Watson Elementary School Werewolf Club. They know Henry is at the center of the mystery, and they're going to get some answers -- or else.

Book Description
Would you buy a used time machine from this man?
Mr. Talbot has taken the Werewolf Club to London! Unfortunately, they made the trip in Uncle H. G. Talbot's unreliable time-and-space machine, and they've arrived in 1890 London -- where it might be a tad difficult to buy the 212 double-A batteries they need for the machine to get them home. The Werewolf Club's goose is cooked -- and not for a good old-fashioned English Christmas dinner.
While they're figuring out what to do, the young werewolves have plenty of time to take in some sights usually missed by your average tour bus, and even help legendary detective Sherlock Holmes thwart the notorious Jack the Schlepper's attempt to steal the crown jewels from the Tower of London. There will always be an England -- but never one like the Werewolf Club's England.
Customer Reviews:
Happy 1st grader.......2007-05-29
I bought three of these Werewolf Club books for my [...] son who just finished [...]. They are the first chapter books that he can read on his own, and he likes the stories so much and is so proud that he can read them, that he sat the rest of the family down and read a few chapters out loud to us. Some of the words are too difficult for him (e.g. except, solicitors), but for the most part he can figure them out independently. The chapters are very short (1-2 pages, usually) and this seems to help him not feel overwhelmed. I recommend these for anyone who likes silly but fun stories, and who is ready for easy chapter books.

This book is great to learn about werewolfs like, jean grenir, gilles garnier, peter stump, the real wearwolfs. The book also tells about werewolfs origons ect
A good book for those interested in the supernatural.......2003-09-11
I have an old copy of this at home that I found when I was about 8. The book contains numerous ancient stories and accounts, eerie illustrations, and a wealth of obscure information on werewolf lore.
For example, it lists old cases of men and women with lycanthropy and how their mental illness led others to believe they were werewolves, often with very tragic endings. The book also elaborates on the condition known as lycanthropy, and lists several other mental and physical disorders which have helped perpetuate the werewolf legends.
Old folk stories are included as well, such as the story of a man whose friend comes to visit his cottage in the woods and tells the tale of how he was attacked by a large, vicious wolf. His friend tells him of how he managed to lop off the beast's paw and drive it away, keeping the amputated limb as a trophy. When he pulls the paw out of his bag, however, the man sees his friend holding a human hand with his wife's wedding band on it. When he goes to check on his wife, he finds her in hte bedroom nursing a bloody stump where her left hand was.
Other bits of obscure folklore are included, such as the concept of using silver to kill werewolves is a myth. It describes how werewolves can be good, evil, or even detached from human morality all together depending on which region of the world they come from and who tells the tales. It dedicates a space to other shapeshifters as well, such as the werefox witches of Japan.
Overall, a very informative and creepy book. I highly recommend it for those interested in finding a spooky little read late at night to teach you a few things you might not have known before.
