                      Book Description

This book is a synopsis of modern deep-field astronomy, based on the powerful telescopes and instruments developed in recent years. It is organized along topical themes, such as the extragalactic background radiation at different wavelengths, the evolution of galaxies, the history of star formation, the nature of absorbers, the reionization of the intergalactic medium, the validity of photometric redshifts, gravitational lensing, and clustering of galaxies. Stellar and substellar objects were not neglected, however, and one session was devoted to nearby bodies such as trans-Neptunian solar system objects, brown dwarfs, and stars with special characteristics.

5 out of 5 stars A practical guide for car-based fishing for salmon in Alaska.......2007-07-12

This book has really grown on me. When I first received it I was a little disappointed thinking it was a little light on content. As I've thought more about planning my own Alaska fishing vacation, I now value the author's pragmatic style. He tells you with detail and precision how to get the most out of a car-based excursion fishing for salmon. From what and how to pack, to specific milepost markers for the best fishing at specific times, to how to get your catch home, it's all there. Be aware that this book is ONLY about car-based fishing and ONLY about fishing for salmon; also many of the areas identified as hotspots are very popular and will be crowded (the author uses the local phrase "combat fishing" to describe such situations).

                        4 out of 5 stars good resource.......2007-03-16

A bit limited in scope, but overall a good source of information on getting around. full of good resources to help you plan your trip

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful in planning .......2007-01-27

I purchased this book to aid in planning our first fishing trip to Alaska. The book was very helpful in providing insite in all parts of the trip. I would strongly recommend it for any first timers going fishing to Alaska.

5 out of 5 stars Alaska.. say no more.......2006-07-28

this is a great book if you're getting ready for alaska. well written

3 out of 5 stars Good for the first time visitor.......2005-08-26

This book is well organized and provides a great deal of useful information for the first time alaska visitor. The charts are particularly helpful as you travel along the highways. They quickly identify and rate all the major rivers and their salmon runs.

However, there is very little information here that every traveler I met on the highways didn't seem to already know. All the rivers rated as excellent are known by every highway angler in the state and they are all vying for some room at these locations. The best way to discover 'good' fishing locations is from the alaskan neighbors you meet at the campgrounds. So, I feel it's a good get acquainted book. A one trip book. A useful handbook. Keep it on your dashboard.

Lonely Planet's maps are plasticized for durability and attractiveness, and they are compact for ease of use, but sometimes lacking in detail. Florence is small enough, however, for this map to cover it rather thoroughly. It has an extensive listing of streets and sights, a suggested walking tour, and two detailed maps, one of Central Florence and an even closer-up diagram of the cathedral and Baptistry. There are also two zoomed-out maps of greater Florence and surroundings, all on a sheet folded to the size of a #10 envelope, making up 12 panels counting the front and back. Although I can visualize a larger map that could provide more help with some of the tinier, tucked-away streets so common in Europe, this map should be quite adequate for most travellers to Florence.

Hyveth's story was a written account of encouragement and hope for those of us who feel helpless and unloved. She shows the reader that GOD loves us no matter what we've done or where we've been.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful testimony to the Lord's power.......2002-02-08

I attended a women's retreat this past Sabbath where Pastor Hyveth Williams was the keynote speaker, and I purchased this book. After reading it, I came away with a renewed spirit and desire to learn to be silent and listen for God's instruction in my own life. This book is a testimony to God's healing power, and the love and care that He has for each of His children. I highly recommend this book to those who may need some encouragement in their Christian walk. Pastor Williams is a very dynamic speaker and has also been given the gift to share her story in a way that touches hearts. She is honest in sharing her difficult experiences within her own denomination in being taken seriously and accepted as a minister of God because she is a woman. As an Adventist, I can identify with what she says, and I also agree with her that our denomination should not be judged negatively as a whole because of negative members who are caught up in legalism; there are no perfect denominations. I never got the sense of being bound by rules and regulations as I read her book, and I agree that each individual can find freedom in Jesus Christ. Christ is a God of freedom and joy, not regulations and legalism. Read the book; you won't be sorry.

In this autobiographical work, she traces her growth from a promiscuous, addictive, abusive childhood to her current position as Adventist minister. She tells of the miraculous ways in which she has been guided and healed through the years and how she had to fight tooth and nail against sexism, racism and bigotry in her own church to reach her current popular status. If you are a current or would be Adventist, the book will probably be a useful affirmation of faith, but for the average reader the interesting and absorbing beginning will probably trail off into what I find to be a mediocre preachy ending. Hyeth is obviously a bright dynamic woman who has seen a much bigger slice of life than most of us and who conveys a convincing sense of being guided by unseen hands to reach out and heal herself and many of those around her. Many people seem to need the structure of a limiting faith to get a handle on their life and this book illustrates that religionist process in action for herself and her parish.

I had to buy this book for school and although I haven't had to read all of it (with almost 3000 pages this is no real surprise), I have some idea of the content. This is the one-volume edition, but I think it gives a good global view of English literature. Starting at the very beginning (Beowulf etc.) and ending with major contemporary authors such as Salman Rushdie, this book gives an extensive introduction to each literary period. The book doesn't only contain fragments of texts, sometimes the entire text is given. All this comes with footnotes clarifying things and other sections providing extra information.
As a foreign student of English I experienced some difficulty with the introductions; the structure wasn't always clear, but of course it could be just me. :-) As a whole I think this is a useful anthology for students, but I would still like to make a few practical remarks. This book being of considerable size and weight, it is not very handy to read for example in an easy chair or in bed; furthermore it is not self-evident to take it with you wherever you go. It also has very thin paper which makes marking certain passages (for study purposes etc.) a bit tricky if not impossible.

I had been looking forward to reading this, after seeing all of the glowing reviews. I don't know what those people were smoking, or if they just have very poor standards, but I thought this book was pretty bad. The plot is extremely predictable, there is little character development, way too many cliches, and most of the characters seem very flat. My friend's ten-year-old son also read the book and even he thought it was terrible. I think the author was trying too hard and was possibly just trying to throw together a quick story to cash in on the magical story craze brought on by the Harry Potter series. Better writing could have made the story a bit more palatable but it really did seem like a poor effort on the author's part.

If you've been looking for a series that combines the magic of Harry Potter with the imaginative characters of Artemis Fowl, then Septimus Heap and his first book, MAGYK, is definitely the story for you. A quick, delightful read that can stand on its own, MAGYK is, without a doubt, an intriguing page-turner.

Septimus Heap, the seventh son of a seventh son, died shortly after birth. Born to a family of Wizards, there's no telling what he might have become, as his lineage as a seventh son would have made him unbelievably magical. But on that winter night when Septimus died, his father, Silas, found another newborn child in the forest. They named her Jenna, and she grew up thinking that she was the daughter of Silas and Sarah Heap, and the sister of six older brothers--Simon, Sam, Edd, Erik, Nicko, and Jo-Jo. Early on, though, Sarah had her own ideas of who Jenna really was, especially when she heard the news that the Queen had been murdered. Jenna Heap was, undoubtedly, the Princess.

Over the next ten years, darkness came to the Castle and the Ramblings, where the Heaps lived. With no Queen, evil came in the form of the Supreme Custodian, who along with his cohorts banned magic and ended the happiness the Queen's people had once known. As the Heap family attempt to ride out this time of darkness, the ExtraOrdinary Wizard, Marcia Overstrand, learns of the plot to kill the Princess, which will allow evil to truly take over the Palace. It seems that the only thing keeping DomDaniel, the Dark Wizard, from returning to the Castle is the presence of the Princess, and he plans to remedy that.

What follows is the flight of Jenna, Nicko, the ExtraOrdinary Wizard, and a Young Army recruit known only as Boy 412 to the Marram Marshes, where Aunt Zelda Heap, a White Witch, will be able to keep them from harm. As events unfold and DomDaniel does everything within his power to track down the girl standing between him and a ruling darkness, the Heap family will have to do everything within their means to stop him--and at the same time stay alive.

MAGYK is a delightful, entertaining story filled with action-adventure and fantasy. With a very large cast of characters who are as diverse as they come, this is one story not to be missed. If you like Harry Potter, you will definitely enjoy Septimus Heap. Filled with twists and turns, this is a story you'll stay up reading long into the night. And although at times predictable, you'll quickly be drawn into the life and times of the Heap family and their magical world.

ABOUT THE BOOK Relax, Read and Reminisce There are some things that you may or may not have in common with the author. Dignam holds an advanced degree, is a Certified Public Accountant, is married, has children, is semi-retired, and has published two books prior to writing this one. On the other hand, there is a great deal that you definitely have in common with the author. You most likely attended elementary school and junior high/middle school. You had classmates, among whom you probably had a best friend. It is also likely that you and that friend pulled some stunts, tried new things just for the fun of it, and shared important secrets. It's probable that you revealed some of your innermost thoughts to that best friend, thoughts that you couldn't even discuss with your parents. You might even have done some of the goofy things that the author and his best friend did while enjoying their last year before graduating from eighth grade and entering high school. Even if you didn't, the reading of this book will serve to nudge your memory and prompt you to recall some of the fun things you did do in those formative years of your life. When those pictures of the past come into focus, you can simply sit back and relive those happy, carefree times all over again. You might even consider telling your parents about some of the exploits you have kept hidden from them all of these years. Were those the best times of your life? Was the world very different then? Are kids better off now than they were in your youth? Where is your "best friend" now?
