Finally some North Shore nature writing.......2004-07-04

For all the love the people of the Midwest have for Lake Superior and the Minnesota North Shore, you'd think more people would have written...and published...about their experiences there. But there is a noticeable lack of current nature writing about the lake. This book does a great job of filling in. The various chapters take a rough clockwise journey around the lake, stopping to deeply elucidate one natural history phenomenon after another. For fans of Lake Superior, this is a very welcome and very important book.

I have been visiting the North Carolina outer banks since 1970. I did not think anyone had as much love or reverence of this special place as I, but I was wrong. Tom Carlson in Hatteras Blues has established himself as a true devotee of these narrow islands off the Carolina coast. He captures the lure of isolated and wind-worn beaches and ever-changing off shore waters where fishermen (and women) from the smallest North Carolina towns to the largest international cities have searched for prize bill fish, bull drum, cobia and a host of other species for several decades. The reader is absorbed in the story of the Fosters and others who fought the harshness of life on the outer banks to create a thriving charter fishing industry that today is being challenged by corporations and those uncaring of the outerbanks special culture. Carlson is a waterman by birth and a "Banker" by choice. Hatteras Blues is a heartfelt story of great loss, love, spirit, transformation and hope set in one of the most magical places on planet Earth. A book about Charter Fishing.......2006-04-29

This is a very well researched book about the history of charter fishing off Hatteras Island. The author combines archive research with annecdotes collected from his repeated trips to the island. The reader also has a feeling of sadness as the author's wife slowly succumbs to MS while he is doing his research.

Well worth the time to read.

I was disappointed with this map. It should not read "City Map" as it was pretty much only a "Strip Map". I can get that anywhere on the internet.

I think Ivy really puts you in her shoes because if you have a city life in a apartment or house, it's very hard to imagine what hardships homeless people go through. I think this book gives you another point of view of life. This is a very suspenseful book that pulls you into it. I would definitely recomend this book to anyone who is looking for a suspenseful book to take up spare time and/or entertain themselves.

I think that IVY, A TALE OF A HOMELESS GIRL IN SAN FRANCISCO, is an excellent introduction to the topic of homelessness in an urban environment. It's a heartwarming story that reduced this fifty year old to tears. Ivy will defintely cling to you!

My 12 year old daughter and I read Ivy: Tale of a Homeless Girl in San Francisco together. I thought that I knew about homelessness, but this well written story taught me about feeling homeless. It was a catalyst for discussions with my daughter. My 10 year old son sat close enough to listen as I read aloud. He appreciated the book as much as we did. The vocabulary is rich, and the author weaves a fine story. The illustrations capture the noises, smells,and emotions of Ivy's experiences. We look forward to sharing the book with friends.

A Reality Check.......2000-06-17

From a grandmother's perspective, it is an enlightening book, not only for young people, but all ages. The book is harsh enough in presenting the reality of some peoples lives, but the writing has touches of warmth which holds the reader's interest. Even though it is fiction, the book is a reality check for human behavior.
