Like a desert..........2001-09-07

...this book is dry and empty. While browsing through this book, I was struck by its lack of real content. The quality and quantity of the information were essentially identical to the four page "tips sheet" that came with my package of resume paper. A more careful review found that the sample resumes were barely relevant to today's "high-tech" marketplace, and I was appalled to see duplicate cover letters used to pad the book! Two stars because of price, otherwise not recommended.

In the early years of the Cold War, one voice of dissent regarding United States foreign policy came from an unexpected source. The National Farmers Union criticized the Truman administration for what it saw as an advancement of American imperialism, a denial of the prerogatives of other nations in world affairs, and an inaccurate view of Soviet communism's threat to world peace.

Bruce Field here explores the people and events of a little-studied episode in American history by describing how the leadership of the Farmers Union split over the Korean War. When the orgaization was faced with accusations of being communist sympathizers, NFU national president Jim Patton chose to support the war while a splinter group led by Iowa Farmers Union president Fred Stover continued to protest American involvement.

Harvest of Dissent traces the tension that gripped America's heartland in the early 1950s as American farmers spoke their minds about their country's foreign policy. Drawing heavily on both Patton's and Stover's papers as well as on interviews with members of the NFU, Field presents an engaging study of the two men's leadership styles and personalities as he relates the infighting that tore apart this organization and the effects it had on both domestic and foreign affairs.

By examining such issues as the state of U.S. agriculture in the postwar years and the relationship between Patton and presidential candidate Henry Wallace in the 1948 election, Field establishes a context for understanding the NFU split. He argues that Patton was ultimately more concerned about the welfare of his organization than about ideological issues, acknowledging that if the NFU continued to criticize American policy it would lose influence and could even collapse.

A revealing study in political intolerance, Harvest of Dissent provides an insightful look at the role one group of farmers played during a crucial time in American history and the impact those times had on the union's future. It shows how even a relatively small organization can gain prominence on the national stage and offers a view of the Cold War from an unusual vantage point.

Bruce E. Field's Harvest of Dissent: The National Farmers Union and the Early Cold War illustrates the consequences of denouncing American foreign policy in the years following WWII.

The National Farmers Union questioned the ability of the United States to establish world hegemony, and argued for international cooperation to address issues of worldwide poverty and self-determination. The Truman administration chose instead to view the world as a playing field upon which the competing interests of the United States and the Soviet Union vied for domination. As advocates of international cooperation through the United Nations, the National Farmers Union dissented from the unilateral and aggressive actions of Truman's foreign policy. Instead of being perceived as representing a legitimate divergent view of how U.S. foreign policy might be better conducted, the organization became the target for suppressive criticism and unsubstantiated claims of Communist infiltration by the FBI, the State Department, and the House Un-American Activities Committee.

As the Cold War intensified into the Korean War, the National Farmers Union faced the dilemma of whether to continue their opposition to American foreign policy or, conversely, to align itself within the prevailing American attitude of consensus. Organizational leaders differed as to the best path. Field follows the inner politics of the National Farmers Union as national president Jim Patton led the effort to purge the vocal critics of the Truman administration. Patton moved in this direction after he decided the group needed to support the U.S. Korean War effort in order to survive. His Machiavellian machinations successfully removed the loudest and most influential of the dissenters, including Fred Stover.

Field presents an interesting dichotomy of dissent. On one side, Jim Patton and the National Farmer's Union, after an early period of dissent, tried to maintain influence during the growing Red Scare by adopting a posture supportive of the U.S. Korean War effort. While on the other side, Fred Stover continued his dissent during the Korean War by refusing to temper his condemnation of an aggressive American foreign policy that he believed played a role in provoking and escalating the Cold War. The irony of Field's dichotomy lay in the fact that both Jim Patton and Fred Stover achieved about the same impact. As critics, at one time or another, they were disloyal, untrustworthy, and hence, marginalized in the post World War II political climate. Field shows that the 'harvest of dissent' for the National Farmers Union, Jim Patton, and Fred Stover failed to reap a fundamental examination of the assumptions of American Cold War foreign policy.

I recommend the book as important in revealing the role the climate of consensus played in limiting debate during the early years of the Cold War. Field provides a telling example of exactly how government pressure limited dissent and the exploration of alternatives to fighting the Cold War.

The present volume contains the texts of the invited talks and contributed papers presented at IAU Colloquium No. 123 on `Observations in Earth Orbit and Beyond', which was held at Goddard Space Flight Center on 24-27 April 1990.
The Colloquium featured invited reviews of virtually all current and approved future projects in space astronomy, over the entire electromagnetic spectrum from gamma-ray to radio, of all major space faring nations of the world. The reviewer was typically either the project scientist or principal investigator of a given project. Also included are reviews and panel discussions of current and future launch systems, advantages and disadvantages of various orbits and sites in space for astronomical observatories, and major unsolved problems of astronomy. A number of contributed papers were also given at the meeting and are included in the current proceedings.
This volume contains an Olympian view of the space astronomy program, while serving as a handy reference to researchers who often have difficulties in keeping up with the development in the multidisciplinary field of space astronomy.

If you coach girl's basketball -- at any level -- this book will help you immensely. Coach Hatchell goes beyond discussing the simple fundamentals of coaching and X's and O's; she delves deeper into the mentality of a coach and the various nuances that can occur (though the fundamentals are important and they are covered in great detail). The Complete Guide To Coaching Girls' Basketball: Building a Great Team the Carolina Way is loaded with discussions and drills regarding fundamentals, offense and defense. The basics are here if you are just starting out as a coach or if you coach younger girl's. If you coach high school age girls and are more experienced, there is also a wealth of information. There are numerous drills, plays, and sets that will benefit the most experienced of coaches and teams. Coach Hatchell also talks at length about team and game management; a couple of areas that are often overlooked and sometimes difficult to learn. She does a masterful job discussing these areas and giving helpful ideas and tips.

The one aspect of this book that really sets it apart are the 'Ask the Coach' boxes throughout. In these, Coach Hatchell gives her answer to questions such as "What's a good drill to teach the behind-the-back dribble?" and "How do I get my kids to make good cuts in our press break?". The 'Ask the Coach' boxes are loaded throughout the book and the answers are very insightful and interesting.

As a basketball coach who reads a lot of books, coaching materials, and so forth for personal use and for my hoopsu.com reviews, I have read many so-called 'guides to basketball'. Some are decent, but most of them are so basic and watered-down that you could learn more watching an 8-year old in her driveway. The Complete Guide To Girls' Basketball is not one of those books.

The Complete Guide To Girls' Basketball is far and away the most complete book I have read on the basics, fundamentals, and strategies of basketball. This is a great book for coaches at all levels; girl's or boy's. Coach Mullaney didn't just slap some notes between a book cover; he obviously put forth a lot of time and effort writing this book. It is extremely well organized, easy to read, and simple to understand.

The main thing I like about this book, in comparison to many of the other 'guides', is that it goes well beyond the basic cookie-cutter information. The basics are discussed, but Coach Mullaney goes further and describes more in-depth and pertinent topics, ideas, and drills. That is why this book is not only great for the first-time coach, but also for even the most experienced of coaches at all levels of play.

I also really enjoy Part One of the book, where Coach Mullaney guides you through developing your own plan, philosophy and communication skills. This is an area I would have found invaluable when I first began coaching.

The Complete Guide To Girls' Basketball also details offense, defense, and special situations by breaking down all the skills involved and teaching how to perform them effectively. The drills section is also very well put together with over 200 exceptional drills - with easy to follow diagrams. All facets of the game are touched on so you can use these drills to help prepare yourself or your team.

The title says, 'The Complete Guide to Girls' Basketball', which it most certainly! If you coach girls basketball, this book is must-have addition to your library. If you coach boys basketball, I also recommend this book...there are so many great ideas in here it is worth checking out! If you want to improve your coaching knowledge and coaching skills, The Complete Guide to Girls' Basketball deserves a look!

I loved this book cause I am a Dawson's Creek fan.It was a very good book. It gives good detels. I could even hear the characters realy talking. They made it seam so real. I realy liked it so much it made me want to go buy the other books that where also great.I wish they would make more books though.

This book was great. Even though I love the show and it really wouldn't matter to me if it was good or bad, I still think that it was sensational. I realy liked this book but i thought the scenes with dawson and joey got a bit boring but i loved the parts with pacy and jen they were the best and the ending was good too. I think this book is likeable becouse it has many themes.

After seeing the TV programme, I had to read the book. It is amazing, I found it hard to put down. The characters are so real and the different themes are portrayed realisticly. A must for all, fans or not!!!
