Single Best Guide For Understanding Retirement Plans .......2004-08-10
Steve Abramson's Guide to Qualified Retirement Plans is much more readable, and easier to use for research, than any of the other books in the Aspen Publishers household.
It's very comprehensive, yet sprinkled with real-world examples.
I've been involved in the planning, design, implementation, marketing and sales of retirement plans for business for 25 years. I prefer using this book to rifling through my memory or the internet, or hoping I can get a hold of one of my TPA contacts when I need them.

Seeds: Ecology, Biogeography, and Evolution of Dormancy and Germination.......2007-05-13
Authoritative and my new guide to unlocking the secrets of dormancy. Written at a level I can understand. It is my latest guide in my quest to grow plants and trees. I thank the authors for the knowledge this book has given me.
Outstanding contribution in seed dormancy and germination ........1999-09-15
An amazing book from a peer couple of seed science and technology. Weed seed ecology is my field and it always facinated me, that how a plant showed his strategy against humen interference in its life cycle. This book is clearly answered these question by different ways. I really congratulate the honorable authors for there real contribution in seed science.

In The X-Files episode "The Erlenmeyer Flask," FBI agent Dana Scully shows some bacteria to microbiologist Anne Carpenter, who pronounces them extraterrestrial: containing different DNA nucleotides than those found in Earthly organisms. But like the hapless redshirts of Star Trek, scientists who uncover extraterrestrial evidence have shortened life expectancies. Indeed, Carpenter is soon snuffed out in a highly suspicious car crash. But the real scientist on whom she was based, University of Massachusetts virologist Anne Simon, remained as scientific advisor to the popular program: she is the "X-Pert."
In her book, Simon describes the scientific basis of various X-Files episodes, and writes about some of her behind-the-scenes work putting the Scully into Scully. Sometimes it gets a little difficult to keep track of when Simon is describing an episode and when she's talking about cutting-edge science, but that's part of her point: "The life of a research scientist is filled with mysteries as complex as any that appear on The X-Files. We are Scullys." Simon knows that this show, for all its paranormal apparatus, gives a taste of the thrill of real science, enough to be inspiring a new generation to follow in Scully's footsteps. --Mary Ellen Curtin
Book Description
Could an alien organism really survive a centuries-long trip on a meteor and remain virulent enough to attack a human being? How would a scientist know she was peering at a microbe from another planet? What's the possibility of a genetically mutated monster actually developing?
In a gripping exploration of the facts behind the science fiction that has enthralled millions of X-philes, Anne Simon -- the respected virologist who comes up with the science for many intriguing episodes -- discusses telomeres, cloning, the Hayflick limit, nanotechnology, endosymbionts, lentiviruses, and other strange phenomena that have challenged the intellect and threatened the lives and sanity of America's favorite FBI agents. With Simon's extraordinary gift for explaining complicated, cutting-edge science in a light, accessible style, and her behind-the-scenes commentary on the development of various plot lines, The Real Science Behind the X-Files will appeal to science buffs and X-Files aficionados alike.
Customer Reviews:
A witty and intelligent guide.......2006-09-22
Simon writes wittily and intelligently about a number of subjects, all of which have been dramatized on the hugely popular television show "The X-Files." There have been other books about the show, episode guides and the like, but for my money this book is best.
Dummies Guide to Science.......2006-03-30
I bought this as a bargain book but it is worth the full price! The author writes in a knowledgeable yet humourous style which makes absorption of the subject matter easy for non-scientists, and less than 40 pages into an information packed book I have learned such a lot already. I rated it 4 star because I would have liked to see a glossary at the back and colour photographs would have made a very interesting book moreso. For example, what do the sea slugs that prefer to try to eat each other before taking the alternative option of having sex look like? Other reviews here tell you that the book is based on science fact and fiction touched upon in the X-Files so I don't need to go there. Read it, learn, and laugh. There is nothing funnier than real life.
Simply Wonderful !.......2005-04-24
I love the X files and I'm a mixture of Mulder and Scully with regard to their beliefs. But after reading this book, I think I have become a scully! This book is so lucid and simple in its explanation of certain "paranormal" phenomenon. The author does a wondeful job combining biology and humour to explain to the lay person that not all things are paranormal and that if you do a little scientific research most of the things out there will make sense. All my knowledge on DNA, chromosomes, cancer comes from this book !Though she herself admits that not everything you see on the X files can be explained by science, most of the things that happen on a macro scale in the X files happen on a micro scale in real life. Genetic mutation is a reality, a virus surviving an cosmic travel is plausible, and so on. Finally, for those of you who are deceived by books written by the layperson/idiots/quacks, read this book and you will become fascinated as to what science has to offer.
For the Scientist and Non-Scientist.......2000-09-24
I came upon this book at the house of a friend and couldn't put it down.
It is a wonderful read and, to a non-scientist, an entertaining and clear look at some of the scientific mysteries of the universe.
This is a perfect book for a graduation present and for anyone with an interest in brain-sucking worms, aliens and mutating organisms. I recommend it highly.
Way More Entertaining than a normal biology textbook..........2000-09-19
Sexual tension aside, the coolest thing about this show seems to be the questions it poses about nature and science as we know it. And being a molecular biology student, I always get a kick out of shooting down the supposed theories that the show's characters spout out. It's hard sometimes to figure out if Chris Carter and the powers that be are really serious about certain phenomenons/ideas. This book clears it up nicely. Dr. Simon is completely knowledgeable about these topics and presents the information with much more gusto than your typical molecular biology textbook. I'd rather be tested on her book come final exams, but such is life! :)

Discover the best-kept secrets of expert campers, which are divulged in this book by Cliff Jacobson, a seasoned veteran of the sport.
Customer Reviews:
What I didn't know.......2005-11-17
Wow.
There was a lot of stuff I didn't know. Twenty five years of camping on the average of once a month and I got a lot out of this book. Jacobsen's advice on pitching tarps alone is worth the price of the book. There is a minimal amount of old chestnuts aand lots of really useful information.
An Excellent Resource.......2005-11-01
This book lives up to its title. Some of the tips are fascinating, although as a "car camper" I may never utilize them (for example, despite the book's recommendations, a Eureka dome tent is more convenient and practical for my family then, say, a hand-fashioned shelther of canvas and rope, or pine boughs). Nevertheless, even the information that I may never utilize myself is fascinating to read, and the book is otherwise full of "smaller scale" tips and tricks (e.g., cooking, tools, hiking and orienteering, etc.) that are useful to all levels of campers.
good book by great outdoor author.......2005-08-15
Cliff Jacobson is in my opinion the best canoe-camping-outdoor equipment-how-to guy writing today. And this book is very good, full of wonderful tips and advice laid out in far greater detail than most any of his competitors can muster.
Since I enjoy this author so much, I didn't even mind that the organization of "Camping Tips only the Experts Know" is a little haphazard, using the letters of the alphabet. Nor did I mind that most of the camping tips presented I'd already come across in Cliff's other outdoor books, including his masterpiece, "Expedition Canoeing." However, there were just enough brand new tips to keep me turning pages. And the occasional re-tooled old tip explained in even greater and more helpful detail.
My advice would be, if you're interested in camping, especially canoe camping, then buy everything this author has ever written. You'll be more comfortable and efficient in the great outdoors -- and appreciative of it -- than ever before. But if you can only get one or two of his books, then choose between "Expedition Canoeing" and/or "Canoeing and Camping, Beyond the Basics." They are extraordinary.
Basic Essentials series writer puts it all together.......2005-07-28
Cliff Jacobson is one of the authors of a great series of camping books called the "Basic Essentials". He is popular because he writes in a homey accessible style that gets you interested in the subject and teaches you in simple terms anyone can grasp. In the series are books on camping basics, cooking outdoors, map and compass, shelter, weather, canoeing, fishing, first aid, and more. They are great little library to have but if you can't afford them all, buy this one for all the basics. Cliff has put together a book that has information from all of these and a little more. Some of his "secrets" are really helpful tips you may have heard before if you are an experianced camper, but you can bet there will be some new ones too. An all around great resource for the experianced or rookie camper, I highly reccommend.
Wow - this book has it all!.......2003-06-27
With this book, Mr. Jacobson has compiled some of the best tips and ideas for camping out of doors. From winter camping to knot-tying, it is a VERY helpful resource for the beginning/intermediate camper. The book is easy to read and easy to reference with subjects listed in alphabetical order. He covers almost anything you could think you want to know about camping, with very good information on canoeing as well. Read this book before you go!

Customer Reviews:
Fifteen and Pregnant.......2006-06-03
This book reminds me of the movie Fifteen and Pregnant. There are three friends with the same issue of sex before marriage. Rainey's situation is very common when a teenage girl grows up in a single parent home and she doesn't get the attention that she needs because her mother has to solo as head of the house, thus, neglecting (not purposely) the care and nurture of her daughter. It's not often when the boyfriend agrees to remain a virgin with his girlfriend until they marry but this is the way it is supposed to be. I found the three situations very entertaining and educational but a little preachy. The teenagers were typical -- they argued with each other, got mad with each other and lost trust in one another. This is why a lot of teen girls can relate to books like this. I would definitely recommend this novel to parents for their teens to read. This is on my daughters (14 and 16) bookshelf ready to be read and reviewed.
I Understand Where The Book Was Going But...........2006-05-13
it didn't quite make it. The author's attempt to shine a light on one of the oldest but still important topic of teen sex reads like an old Afterschool Special. Between the three teenage girls in this novel, they deal with abortion, infertility, rape, and HIV. Yes these consequences are real but the stiff, outdated dialogue makes it hard to take the extreme consequences in this book seriously.
Hats off for the topic and the effort put out by this author. Competition in young adult fiction is tough. There's nothing wrong with hitting heavy topics but you don't want it to bounce off of deaf ears by not making the language and storyline fit the times. Most people don't like to be preached to, that goes double for teenagers. I suggest that you choose your approach through storylines carefully. It could make the difference of your book moving off the shelves to a cash register or just being moved over in order to grab another book by someone else.
Makes Quite A Case For Abstinence.......2004-12-21
"I Wish I Had Waited" by Sylvia Willis Lett makes the perfect case for abstinence. In this book we are introduced to Rainey, Tamara and Alicia, three women of different races who have been friends for their entire lives. Sometime around junior high or high school, their friendship fizzles due to boys, rumors and typical drama among young females.
The reason I say that this book makes the perfect case for abstinence is because the drama that each of the young girls experiences, is enough to frighten an adult woman. Probably the most striking story of the three is the story of young Rainey, the young woman who has an abortion. Her story is likely to cause inner conflict with the pro-choice crowd, but one must read carefully, Rainey took part in an abortion under unscrupulous circumstances which led to her tragic circumstances. Rainey is not only left with guilt, but finds herself in so much drama following the abortion.
Tamara and Alicia each have dramatic circumstances surrounding sex. This was a really good book and young women will want to read it. The characters are detailed and likeable. My only suggestion is that I probably would have had one character not have such detrimental circumstances surrounding sex, something teens that have friends that went all the way might identify with. Perhaps one character who lost her virginity and just decided that sex just wasn't for her. As much as we would like to believe that terrible things happen when teens have sex, there are some teens that go all the way that don't suffer the tragic circumstances that this trio does. The title of the book is, "I Wish I Had Waited," which is why this book is the PERFECT book to use in an abstinence program associated with a class, social group or church situation, or even something to share with a daughter or a niece.
A Good Read for Teens.......2004-12-20
Sylvia Lett has crafted a story that is a good read for teenage girls--and their mothers.
Three girls whose tight friendship has been torn asunder are reunited one fateful night. Seeking solace, each finds her way to the abandoned treehouse where they had spent countless hours as children. There, each girl reveals the impact of a bad decision involving sex. Although each has a different situation, the impact on each is devastating and life-threatening. There's no fairy-tale ending, but one that shows how each girl was able to triumph and grow.
Whether we like it or not, our girls are being exposed to sexuality at earlier ages. This book is a timely and ideal vehicle to open frank, and often difficult, discussions with our girls. It provides life lessons without being preachy.
A Book for both Teens and Parents.......2004-10-22
I WISH I HAD WAITED by Sylvia Willis Lett is a must read for teen-age girls and their parents. The novel revolves around three friends: Rainey, Tamara, and Alicia. They have a story to tell that will tug at the heartstrings.
Rainey thinks she's in love with her boyfriend Zeke, but finds out he's not the guy she thought he was. When her back is up against the wall, she listens to Zeke against her better judgment. The decision she makes may cost her, her life.
Alicia and her boyfriend Franco vow to remain virgins until they marry. Temptation clouds Alicia's judgment and unfortunately tragedy strikes. The events that follow turn their lives upside down. Will their love be able to sustain them through the tragedy or will it be too late?
When Tamara's boyfriend accuses Alicia of coming on to him, she and her best friends have a falling out. Soon afterwards, she discovers he isn't the faithful type. Scared and ashamed to share her secret, Tamara is left to face her personal tragedy alone. Is it too late to repair her friendship with Alicia and Rainey?
Each young lady goes through their own set of growing pains but have a centralized issue they suffer from: issues resulting from pre-marital sex. Although this is a work of fiction, this book touches on real life situations and issues faced by today's teens.
I highly recommend I WISH I HAD WAITED. Ms. Lett has written a book that will help open the lines of communication between teens and their parents.
