No CD, but diskette.......2005-07-20
The book offers several helpful forms, but the problem is that the book comes with a diskette and not a CD. Many updated computers do not come with diskettes anymore, but now come with CD-ROMs. The authors should think of updating to a third edition or allow readers to select either diskette or CD when purchasing.
This book needs analysis itself........2003-05-01
There is very little content other than forms, which are included on the diskette (not CD?) but unfortunately the forms are in PDF format. The description states "A diskette with all of the instruments and surveys is also included so that can be edited to reflect company specific information, goals and objectives" - unfortunately someone forgot to tell them that PDF's cant be edited.
Save your money - this book has questionable value and at [it's price] I expect more - This book is going back.

Practical Drainage is easy to read and presented in a non-technical style generously supported with helpful illustrations. There are three key messages in this book: water moves sideways only slowly through soil—leading to a detailed description of how drains work; the how-and-why of perched water table methods of construction; and sands are different from one another—they must be tested before use in turf root zones. These key messages are preceded by detailed descriptions of how water moves into soils and the effects of compaction on that movement. The final chapters give step-by-step guidelines for calculating drain spacings and depths, based on measurements of the hydraulic conductivity of the soil and its various layers. There are also chapters about how to measure hydraulic conductivity and how to design and install sub-soil drainage systems.

This book provides an excellent, easy to follow description about not only sportsturf drainage but drainage in general. The diagrams also prove very helpful to aid in understanding the material. Highly recommended.

The book does an excellent job of teaching quantitative thinking skills and posing interesting problems. Also, it has a terrific appendix with all sorts of interesting data related to biogeochemistry.

This book provides an excellent viewpoint on physical problem solving by "thinking outside the box". I provides great approach to setting up all types of physical problems. I found the book very useful to all types of science. You don't have to be an environmental scientist to benefit from this text. The example problems are very good and the examples stand out in my memory for a long time -- very helpful for future challenges.

Too advanced for young Tee-ballers.......2004-02-26
This book has some merit, but for the most part, many of the tips and drills seem to be written for the older Tee-Ballers, probably at least 7 year olds. If you're looking for a beginners book to help 5 year olds, there are probably better ones.
For example, here is the quote on throwing a ball:
"As the arm travels rearward to begin the throw, the wrist and elbow should be rotated to put the ball to the rear (with the hand and wrist under the ball) at the furthest rearward travel of the ball. Once the arm begins its forward motion the hand and elbow are rotated again to put the ball to the front with the hand on top of the ball. The arm needs to stay up until the ball is released. The advancing foot needs to be planted in line with the back foot."
This is just a small part of the "throwing" section. So, you can see parts of it can be complex to understand for adults - not to mention 5 year olds.
Other sections on coaches, parents, newsletters, etc. provide valuable information for the first time Tee-Ball coach, but the rest of the book makes you think the writer forgot about the first year or two of his coaching days.
How to coach Tee Ball with out going INSANE.......2003-06-03
This book is a good book for older kids playing Tee ball. I am coaching a YMCA league comprised of 3 and 4 year olds. If you are coaching little guys/gals - I would recommend videos more than books.

When I was conscripted to act as my son's T-Ball Manager I didn't believe I was up to the task. Thank G-d I am a bibliophile. So I went to ...pick this book up along with several others.
Needless to say the book gave me a framework to train the kids and help their parents and it's making T-Ball an enjoyable experience for all of us.

Being pretty new to perennials but having read many books I was having sort of a writers block when it came to WHAT to put in my new garden.
I knew all about HOW but with so many choices I was overwhelmed!
This book has a good number of templates to give you a jump start and many outstanding photos of combinations of flowers that work together. In fact this has some of the best photos I have ever seen in a garden book.
It also covers difficult situations like what works in Heavy Clay and wet sites an so forth.
My plan was a butterfly garden and they had the perfect template for a 12x8 garden.
Excellent book for beginners or people that are looking for new combinations!! My fav book so far. (out of the 30 I have looked at).
Decent book, lousy photos.......2007-04-25
One of the drawbacks of buying gardening books online is that you can't see the photos. If I had thumbed through this book I don't think I would have purchased it. Not that it doesn't have a lot of good information and ideas. It's just that the photos are, for the most part, awful. The color is garish and over-saturated and the images actually look blurry. Also, many of the plant combo photos are very close up, which doesn't help when you are trying to figure out how to place your perennials when planting. For me, a good gardening book has to not only give useful information and how-tos (which this book does for the most part), but it has to inspire with lovely photos! And that is where this book fails.
No Juice.......2007-03-29
This book was (is) a big disappointment, containing as it does nothing new regarding perennnial combining that isn't covered in at least a dozen or more recent and more interesting books, not to mention the classics. This is perennial combining 202 with no spark of imagination in the pairings that can make a garden jump for joy. The photography is so ordinary and the color is extremly garish. Is that due to the Digital Imaging Specialists Dale Mack and Jane Ramsey or what? I can find no photographic credits (except for the cover) which is probably just as well. Obviously in a book this size (351 pages), from someone who is as accomplished as Mr. Burrell, there is useful information to be gleaned but I already have books that serve that purpose. If I had seen this in a book store, having thumbed through it for a few moments, I would never have bought it. However, if you are just beginning your library of perennial books this one may be useful to you.
Love This Book.......2007-03-22
Although I have a plethora of gardening books, this one stands out as one of my favorites. It shows a picture example on every page. It has planting diagrams (garden plans) so you can duplicate what you see and it gives a lot of information about the plants. It's the best of both worlds - you can use the information and get creative, or follow the plans and duplicate what you see. Either way, you'll have a great garden!
Although I've been gardening for a good many years, it's nice to have a reference as to how things will look together, instead of my usual "plant it here and hope for the best" approach! I'm tired of moving my plants every year.
I bought my book over the winter and it's a great "dream" book. Now I can't wait till I can get out there and put it all to good use!
perennial combos.......2007-02-16
This is a wonderful guide to planning and developing a perennial garden. The author gives examples for numerous planting condition,such as shade, sand, clay. I can't wait for spring!

This is a really re-readable book-- downright hilarious and romantic. Alex (a clumsy, gutsy girl) and Kris (a charming jock) face misunderstandings from the very first day they meet. So, they have a battle of the sexes where they try to out-wit each other. But..the attraction is there. Are they both too stubborn to admit it and will they let their short tempers take over? High school romance at its best in this great story
