The emphasis on white dwarf stars and cosmology arises from the most recent advances in cosmological and galactic structure research in which white dwarf stars are playing a very prominent role. Examples are Type Ia supernovae (i.e. white dwarf supernovae), the origin and evolution of the universe, the age of the galactic disk, cosmochronology using white dwarfs in globular clusters and galactic clusters, and the physics of accretion onto compact (very dense) stars. As an assisting guide to the reader, we have included, by invitation, comprehensive review articles in each of the four major areas of the book, white dwarf supernovae, cosmology, accretion physics and galactic structure. The reviews include introductory material that they build upon. Hervey Garrett Smith was the foremost marine illustrator of the 1950s and 1960s, and his wonderful drawings of traditional ropework quickly propelled The Marlinspike Sailor to cult classic status when it was published in 1956. With the addition of a section on modern, synthetic rope in the 1970s, its popularity has continued undiminished to this day. It teaches a few basic knots--the bowline, sheet bend, and rolling hitch, among others--and splices in three-strand and braided rope. But its real business is decorative rope and canvaswork--the traditional arts of the sailor--and here it has no equal. Knots to you !!!.......2007-09-21

Although this book is an interesting addition to my bookshelf, it seems to be more concerned with ornamental knots and rope work. I've wanted to get for years and I think anyone who buys it will be happy with it as an introduction to splices, etc. It's got a good feel. If you're determined to get into 18th century maritime sailorcraft, it won't be the last book you order. ARRRH!

Sailing knots and splices.......2007-01-20

I purchased this book for my husband who has been looking for a easy explanation of splicing...He had the following to say: Have looked through several books on sailing knots and splicing and none have done a better job than The Marlinspike Sailor. The text shows a decent array of knots and does a great job on splicing which is what I purchased the text for. I have had no trouble following the simple directions to troublefree splices...a great item

Very out dated.......2007-01-12

With the exception of some pages that have been added in the back on braided rope this book is horribly outdated. The newer section is just reprints from Sampson rope splices which are available on the web. Unless you are restoring an old square masted sailing craft don't bother.

Easier to handle than Ashley.......2006-12-24

What a fantastic book. If you would like to learn how to do any number of very cool things with rope, and to do them without (much) frustration, I can't recommend a better book. Plus, there are some fun projects that are not rope based but well worth the effort.

Map and We're still lost!.......2007-01-26

First off if you want to know where big roads are in Hong Kong and like to stand out like a sore thumb with a huge map then this is a great map for you.
I found that the map didnt list any of the smaller streets. Was very big length wise and kind of a pain to use.
I picked up a tourist map at the info booth and it had everything that i needed. Even the small streets!!

The cover of this map has the nerve to use the word "extensive." Ha! This map is seriously lacking in detail. The fold-out maps inside the "Top 10 Hong Kong" book I ordered were *much* more detailed. I don't think I will even bother taking this with me to HK. A huge waste of money.

nice maps, but get the book instead.......2002-08-09

This is a nice map (actually set of maps of tourist areas and overview), but is is essentially the same as the maps that come inside the Lonely Planet Hong Kong condensed guidebook (inside the front and back covers). As I always had with me the condensed guidebook while in HK, the maps were superfluous.

good tourist map.......2001-07-28

I bought this map expecting a street map for the whole of Hong Kong, as I will be moving there in the near future. The map only shows streets & tourist attractions for Kowloon, Central, Wan Chai & Causeway Bay. It doesnt cover the west, east or south side of Hong Kong Island at all, so is of very little use to me.

The roads, shopping malls & tourist attractions are clearly laid out, and the map is laminated so would be durable (although you can't write on it). It also contains a walking tour and a list of emergency phone numbers. So, a good map for the tourist areas, but not a comprehensive map of Hong Kong.

Luces del norte pertenece a la trilogía La Materia Oscura, es uno de los libros de fantasía más interesantes y entretenidos que he tenido la oportunidad de leer últimamente.

Philip Pullman, autor de la trilogía, mira a los maestros fantásticos del XIX: Lord Dunsanny, Julio Verne impregnándose con el mismo aroma de emoción y magia de sus obras.

Luces del norte es una novela que se hace dura de leer hasta el décimo capitulo, pero de allí en adelante, incluyendo dos libros mas, es vertiginoso y adictivo, lleno de sorprendentes emociones, que no deja un sólo momento de respiro.

Se trata de la narración de las aventuras de la protagonista del libro y de la trilogía: Lyra, una niña de 11 años, de origen incierto, inteligente, mentirosa, traviesa, ingeniosa y sobre todo enormemente encantadora.

Al principio del libro esta viviendo en el Jordán College de Oxford, entre estudiantes y profesores. Pero pronto queda claro que la Inglaterra en la que vive Lyra no es la Inglaterra que esta en este mundo.

La gente necesita sus Daimonions para sobrevivir; la sociedad y su tecnología son decimonónicas, aunque su conocimiento teórico del universo es mayor al nuestro. El conocimiento científico esta liderado por La Iglesia, centrado en el estudio del Polvo y la relación Daimonions/Humano.

Descubrir que es un Daimonion, es el recorrido del primer libro de la trilogía. Libro que ya ha sido adaptado al cine y que muy pronto podré ver en la gran pantalla. En mi caso particular este libro me emocionó muy profundamente... ojala otros puedan encontrar un poquito de esa emoción, porque apartando lo freak que es todo fanatismo, emocionarse es un placer, que al menos a mi, se me ha hecho escaso encontrar.

Luces del Norte esta ambientado en un mundo sugerente, lleno de maravillas, que se erige muchas veces en un personaje mas del que deseamos conocer todos los detalles. Es un mundo "científico" al que no ha llegado la revolución industrial y en el que la fe forma parte de la vida cotidiana de todos.

Lyra se embarca en la aventura que cambiara su vida: y a partir de allí secuestros, tiros, gitanos, condesas, espíritus, monos psicópatas, enormes ciénagas, osos polares, acorazados que hablan son reyes y trabajan el metal, científicos locos, horribles crímenes, globos, militares, zeppelines, brujas, cowboys y portales a otros mundos.

En fin, mil y una aventuras que se suceden a un ritmo frenético y que me llevaron directamente al final perfecto para el primer libro de una trilogía.

Pullman entretiene al mismo tiempo que introduce temas para discutir seriamente como la metafísica filosófica, las reglas religiosas, qué es el alma, a dónde vamos cuando morimos - a mis amigos de Filosofía les va a encantar!-.
