Book Description
Philip Hoffman shatters the widespread myth that traditional agricultural societies in early modern Europe were socially and economically stagnant and ultimately dependent on wide-scale political revolution for their growth. Through a richly detailed historical investigation of the peasant agriculture of ancien-régime France, the author uncovers evidence that requires a new understanding of what constituted economic growth in such societies. His arguments rest on a measurement of long-term growth that enables him to analyze the economic, institutional, and political factors that explain its forms and rhythms. In comparing France with England and Germany, Hoffman arrives at fresh answers to some classic questions: Did French agriculture lag behind farming in other countries? If so, did the obstacles in French agriculture lurk within peasant society itself, in the peasants' culture, in their communal property rights, or in the small scale of their farms? Or did the obstacles hide elsewhere, in politics, in the tax system, or in meager opportunities for trade? The author discovers that growth cannot be explained by culture, property rights, or farm size, and argues that the real causes of growth derived from politics and gains from trade. By challenging other widely held beliefs, such as the nature of the commons and the workings of the rural economy, Hoffman offers a new analysis of peasant society and culture, one based on microeconomics and game theory and intended for a wide range of social scientists.

Book Description
Mergers are the mechanisms by which galaxy clusters are assembled through the hierarchical growth of smaller clusters and groups. Major cluster mergers are the most energetic events in the Universe since the Big Bang. Many of the observed properties of clusters depend on the physics of the merging process. These include substructure, shock, intra cluster plasma temperature and entropy structure, mixing of heavy elements within the intra cluster medium, acceleration of high-energy particles, formation of radio halos and the effects on the galaxy radio emission. This book reviews our current understanding of cluster merging from an observational and theoretical perspective, and is appropriate for both graduate students and researchers in the field.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-04-15
This book is not for novices, it's for the already advanced rower, who wants to significantly improve their speed, and technique. It goes into complete detail on every major subject pretaining to rowing, from race prep. months in advance, to the race itself, this book covers it all.
Rowing Smarter.......2007-03-09
This is the definitive book on the current state of the art in rowing both on the water and on the erg. But it won't teach you how to row. Only how to think about things to improve and how everything fits together. The only other product out there today that comes close to this, and is really an excellent companion piece, is Xeno Muller's interactive DVDs.
A must-have........2006-02-28
'Rowing Faster' is the best and most up-to-date textbook on rowing I know. Each chapter within segments such as physiology, psychology, technique etc. is written by a true expert and well edited by Volker Nolte.
Buy this book.
This is the best book so far about rowing, period........2005-01-15
This book is the best source of information to increase boat speed.

Thai-English English-Thai Dictionary for Non-Thai Speakers, Revised Edition (Dictionary) (Dictionary)
ASIN: 174059231X |
Book Description
Thailand is the Land of Smiles. A grin shows companionship. A laugh shows forgiveness. But what if you need a second-class train ticket from Bangkok to Chiang Mai? Keep smiling - this phrasebook will show you the way.
DID YOU KNOW?
When people talk about the Thai language they are really referring to a Central Thai dialect that has succeeded in becoming the standard official language for the whole country. For this reason Thai is only spoken as a first language in the central provinces of the nation. As Thai is the official language of education, government and media it's basically understood from North to South although recent estimates suggest that less than half the population of Thailand speak and understand Thai fluently.
Customer Reviews:
Pocket Perfect.......2007-05-13
This is an excellent phrase book, easy to carry, easy to read and broken into easy to find section. Combined with a short language program this book carried me across Thailand comfortably. I mentione the language program because the pronunciation is a bit tricky to break down phonetically, altho Lonely Planet does a great job of it. I have used lonely planet phrase books for all of Asia and Northern Africa, but I must admit I use Rick Steve's phrase books for European travel. Lonely Planet Guide Books are also very good, especially for the bargain traveler.
Great.......2007-04-10
This book has several great features.
-It is small and easy to fit in a pocket, bag etc.
-It has the words written out in thai. Without hearing and practicing pronunciation I find it very hard to get the tones and accent right. When people give me a blank look I can just point. VERY helpful. Especially considering that Thai words written in the roman alphabet make no sense to Thai people.
-It covers all sorts of situations. Basic travel needs like getting around, buying things, to dealing with medical problems, and even to pick-up lines
-some of the situations are so absurd (in that the average person would know a lot more thai or be dealing with an english speaker before that would happen) that it makes a great conversation piece hanging around the hostel. "Oh, yeah, well I know how to say 'don't worry, it happens to lots of guys. Beat that!'
If you're not looking to actually learn thai, but just want some help getting around and trying not to be the Ugly American, then I recommend this book.
easy to use.......2007-03-31
I bought this book because it's small and you can carry it with you on your trips. it's easy to use and understand as well. great book if you're just vacationing and want to learn enough to get around the country.
Excellent!.......2007-03-28
The best part about this book is the pronunciation guide. Thai can be tricky with all the tones, this book made it very simple to understand. If anything the sex and drug sections can just be for entertainment. I tried out these phrases just for fun, never seriously used them. Good for a laugh. Several Thai people have asked me to send them a copy.
SOCIALLY IRRESPONSIBLE !!!.......2006-10-02
This book has a section called "What's your poison" which gives translations for several illegal drugs. It also describes how to ask for a clean syringe. Drugs are illegal in Thailand, but this book helps to promote their use by providing these translations.
Book Description
If you want to avoid the beaten path while staying on top of things you'll need to be able to say more than 'yes', 'no' and 'how much?'. This book will help you talk your way to where you want to go while filling you in on those points in between. Whether relaxing on a beach, partying or sampling the food you'll be able to spark up conversations with ease.
- comprehensive two-way dictionary
- tips on etiquette and protocol
- learn to talk kickboxing, and catch tuk-tuks
- contains Thai script and pronunciation throughout
- extensive food section will ensure you'll never have to ask for the same dish twice
Customer Reviews:
Don't bother buying this one.......2004-04-29
After traveling using a Berlitz phrasebook in Italy, I went to Thailand, and bought the only one available -- Lonely Planet. It is terrible.
The tone markers don't make much sense. They are not intuitive.
The Food section has something advertised as a "menu decoder" when it is really just the same section all over again. Compared to Berlitz's food section for Italy, the LP guide is rather lacking.
The Dictionary section is very lacking. It doesn't even have all the words listed elsewhere. The index is the same way. It makes finding information in the phrasebook next to impossible.
Unfortunately, this phrasebook has just been whipped out as a companion to LP's monopoly on guide books. Try to find something else.
Not complete.......2003-12-11
I bought this book for my trip to Thailand next winter, so I have not put it into practice yet.
However, Thai is a tonal language, and this book does not indicate what tones one is to use when pronouncing a word.
don't go to Thailand without it.......2003-07-09
My husband and I found this small book to be a huge help as we attempted communication in the marketplaces of Thailand. I prefer to use books like this as a reference, pointing to the Thai phrase next to the English phrase I want to communicate. Conversely, my husband actually studied the book from the beginning. He was able to learn to pronounce and understand many useful phrases in addition to numbers (which came in very handy while bargaining). We enjoyed this book so much that I am already ordering the Mandarin version for our trip to China in 2005.
HELPFULL.......2002-12-09
This phrase-book was very helpful in my last travel to thailand. I kept it always in my pocket and thanks to the thai writings, you can just point the word and the friendly locals teach you how to pronunciate it properly. I gave this book MANY uses, even in the most unexpected situations. USEFUL !
Helpful, Easy to Carry; Phonetics could be better.......2002-08-08
This is a small book with contextual topics that are easy to find in the table of contents. Some basic grammar rules are included and can help someone use past, present, future, ability, and the classifiers if they want to learn the basics of using them. It can be carried in your pocket, and I think that is the best asset. It's a small book you can take anywhere. The phonetical pronunciation was incorrect in one area. The beginning consonant "G"is pronounced more as a hard "g" sound, but it is listed in the book at a "k." This caused miscommunication for it changes the entire word and meaning. The beauty salon context, i.e., "getting a haircut" is a section that is not in this book but could be very useful. This book is very affordable and helpful...just keep in mind some of the phonetic transcriptions, which already difficult in Thai to English, could have been more accurate.

a wonderful, eye-opening little book.......2000-10-08
I bought this book because of its lingustic interest. Material about Lisu, Lahu, Hmong, Akha, Mien, (et al) is very hard to come by. Ordinarily I would anathematize all phrase books, but this gives a lot of detailed information about these languages, including their structure and pronunciation, that is nearly impossible to find anywhere else. The author's presentation is very clear, and included also is some information about the peoples and the cultures of this little-known place. It actually made me want to go there.

Book Description
"Whales mate for life."
"At least they know what they want," Joey thinks.
Sometimes her relationship with Dawson seems so complicated. Even more so when her class field trip to Billings Island, a nature preserve off the coast of Capeside, is blown apart by a freak storm. And Joey and Dawson are separated from Pacey and Jen.
Now they're lost in the woods...stranded in an old cabin together, cold and shivering, alone in a storm...eager for warmth....
Joey, Dawson, Pacey, Jen.
Four fifteen-year-olds ready to take on the world.
They're learning about life, and learning how to love.
Customer Reviews:
the book.......2002-04-13
this book was good but it wasnt that great. You could pretty much tell what was going to happen. It was basically another love story. The book was not that good for me. It would be better for a girl. I would recommend it to a 7 thru 15 yr old girl.
This is cold and hot!.......2000-08-28
I liked this book loads its the second best dawsons creek book(major meltdown been the best) Each charector has a good story line and additional charectors have also been charectorised well. But parts of the book get quite boring where it repeats its self. But apart from that i think its a great book with a well told story!
Isn't the best one ive read but still good!.......2000-06-30
I liked how all of them got their little romance! I liked Pacey's the best! This is a must read for any Dawsons Creek fan! I reccomend all the books! READ BUFFY TOO!
I thought it was Great!.......1999-11-15
Even though I am a sophmore in high school, it was still very interesting. I admit, it was an easy read, but the reader really gets into it! :) It's fun and cute, and although the Jen storyline didn't interest me much, it was still a wonderful book. I definitly recommend it..
The best Dawson's Creek book i've read. Interesting and fun.......1999-01-23
I thought this book was really good! It had everything (and Joey and Dawson were going out!) It had romance, fun, heartwarming and thoughtful chapters and experiences. It's the kind of book that you never want to put down!
