      Book Description

HRM policies and practices need to cope with the dual responsibilities of providing a firm with the best employees to deliver improved financial performance, and a moral duty to these employees to provide a working environment that is equitable and encourages personal development. Many
writers have emphasized the connection between sophisticated HRM techniques and business performance, but has this been at the expense of concepts such as fairness and legitimacy? This book adopts a broader perspective that takes into account not only the strategic dimension of HRM, but also the
professional and societal dimension. It begins by examining the interaction of HRM, strategy and performamce, before putting this into an institutional context, where it is argued that successful HRM practice will be unique for each context in which it operates. It then develops a
contextually-based human resource theory, able to examine and analyze HRM at an institutional, industry, national and international level. This theory is then applied to a number of cases of leading firms in both the USA and Europe. The book concludes by combining the empirical evidence of the case
studies with the theoretical work of earlier chapters to develop a practical approach linking the different roles of HR to specific aspects of performance. Combining academic research with a focus on practical conclusions and recommendations, HRM and Performance will be challenging and innovative
reading for all involved in HRM: Academics, Researchers, MBA and graduate students, practitioners and consultants.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the Beginning Greenskeeper.......2005-02-26

A couple of years ago, I purchased a small golf course in California. I knew nothing about how to keep a golf course in good shape much less improve it. When my superintendent quit, I was up the proverbial creek. I turned to this book for help. It is a great book for those who have had minimal or no exposure to how to keep up the various parts (green, tee boxes, fairways, rough, bunkers, etc.) of a golf course. While I probably won't act as superintendent for very long, I feel armed now with basic greenkeeping knowledge, and it is recommended (and soon to be required) reading for all of my course and clubhouse workers.

5 out of 5 stars Good. VERY Good........2002-12-28

While perhaps limited to the basics, Witteveen's text is well organized and comprehensive enough to assure that I'll achieve my professional goal of being promoted from Assistant Greenskeeper to Head Greenskeeper within 6 years. In fact, in my opinion, it's on par with Chuck Shick's seminal treatise on the subject. One nitpicky point is that the treatment of cinch bugs, manganese, nitrogen and gophers (and other varmint menaces to the golfing industry) is far too brief. Also, more advanced topics such as the theory and practice of inventing your own type of grass would be welcome. Overall, though, it is top notch!

3 out of 5 stars No Magic Here.......2000-08-05

This book is best suited for the first-time greenskeeper or a greens committee member. It contains basic processes such as top-dressing and stays away from specifics like optimal mower height settings for greens. In addition, this book stays away from prescribing remidies for such things as excessive thatch buildup or constant fungus problems. If all you want are the very basics in management practices then buy this book. If you are searching for innovative and detailed turf management applications then you will need to supplement this book with other references.

            Book Description

            Text no 1
Radio Recombination Lines (RRLs), discovered in the USSR in 1964, have become a powerful research tool for astronomers. Available throughout the radio spectrum, these lines carry information regarding the density, temperature, turbulence and velocity of thermal plasmas. Their very existance shows the presence of thermal gas. They also can carry information regarding magnetic fields if Zeeman splitting were to be detected.
Containing the proceedings of an IAU Colloquium celebrating the 25th anniversary of their detection, this volume tells us what has happened since. It contains the story of the detection of RRLs and reviews of many areas of physics of the interstellargas from which stars form, HII regions excited by newly formed stars, planetary nebulae involving dying stars, and the structure of our Milky Way and other galaxies reflecting the large-scale morphology of the star formation process. In addition there is an article describing modern laboratory studies of Rydberg atoms to probe the basic physics of atomic structure, and articles describing the theory of collisions and radiation upon Rydberg atoms leading to observate effects to be used as diagnostic tools in astromony.
This book focuses on the 25 years of astronomical research with radio recombination lines (RRLs) since their discovery in 1965. It covers a wide range of topics: papers dealing with research into Rydberg atoms both in the laboratory and in the interstellar medium of our galaxy and others; papers on the interaction of radiation and atomic systems, as well as with the effects of inadiabatic collisions between these atoms and both ions and electrons. It deals with astronomical observations of atoms with `diameters' ranging from 0.08 to 50 mum a size factor of 625. It deals with RRLs in absorption, in emission and as true masers. And it deals with plasmas with temperatures ranging from 10 to greater than 10 4 kelvins, and with an even greater range of volume densities.
Much new work is reported, including low frequency RRLs discovered in 1980 and the maser RRLs from the star MWC349, discovered in 1989. The advent of aperture synthesis telescopes and large single-element telescopes have made possible RRL studies with high angular resolution. The sum total of the work reported here will make the volume a platform from which to search new horizons in RRL research.

                    Book Description

Peru specialist Dr. Inge Schjellerup, an anthropologist and archaeologist associated with the National Museum of Denmark, stumbled upon the isolated Huambo Valley on the eastern slope of the Andes mountains during field research in 1997. She was surprised to see widespread deforestation and human settlement in a zone that was supposed to be uninhabited according to the official map of Peru. Schjellerup launched an interdisciplinary study of this forgotten region with a team of archaeologists, anthropologists, botanists and geographers. The result of this work, The Forgotten Valleys, explores the effects of land use on the environment of the Huambo Valley over the past 500 years. Schjellerup's team discovered extreme biological diversity in the area, but the forests are under such accelerated destruction that some unknown species are possibly in danger of disappearing before they have even been discovered. Despite an increasing awareness of the need for preserving cultural and biological diversity in the montane forests, very few efforts have focused on a historical, diachronic aspect. The Forgotten Valleys thus explores how humans have gradually changed the environment in this region and how environmental change has thus revised human activities through time.

5 out of 5 stars *A CLASSIC FOR YOUR LIBRARY AND MINE*.......2007-06-14

I have worked with youth as an environmental educator, horticultural therapist, and counselor. I've done quite a bit of reading by authors from various disciplines, and I believe that this book is truly one-of-a-kind. Sobel's developmental theory is sound, and his writing is clear and concise. I have encouraged many of my colleagues to read it, and I feel that it is becoming well-known among environmental educators. This book has the potential to make an excellent contribution to educators and therapists, especially for those of us striving to connect children with the environment. Parents and families would also benefit from this book, as it explains which types of experiences with nature are most likely to have a positive influence on the child based on his or her developmental level. This book has been referenced by several other excellent authors, including Richard Louv (2006). Add this book to your library - you will not regret it!

1 out of 5 stars More like "here's my take from the peoplephobia perspective".......2005-10-25

This book takes a look at nature in a way that ignores the truth and reality of the whole picture. Small bits of truth are presented in such a way that the reader gets a skewed and somewhat twisted view of the actual truth concerning nature and mankind today. He ignores the fact that over 90 percent of all species were extinct BEFORE man came onto the scene. It is natural, strongest survive type of environment as it has ALWAYS been. Nature is NOT peaceful and in fact VERY violent, everything is eating or being eaten constantly from the tiniest microbes to the largest of species. By clearing rain forest trees we are helping evolution/natural selection to produce better organisms in the future (if you believe in such "magic"). Hey one day the sun will die and so will this planet so enjoy it now for the moment take care of it but don't bow down to it - we are the superior species (unless you believe that numbers equate sucess then one celled organisms are the clear winners in evolution but then they wouldn't have needed to 'progress/evolve' past one cell and evolution has failed).

4 out of 5 stars Small but Powerful.......2005-09-09

This is a short little book, but has a powerful message. Children need to experience our environment first hand in order to appreciate it. Once they learn to appreciate it, they will want to preserve it. Plus kids do not get enough outdoor time these days. It also provides excellent reference of books for all aged children on the environment. A must read for teachers and anyone who has an impact on our youth and environment, which should be everyone.

                    Book Description

Welcome to sun-drenched San Diego. Whether you head for the beach, hike in the hills or wander museums and parks, this is the book to take. Then slide south of the border for Tijuana-style bargaining, barhopping and bullfighting.

                    4 out of 5 stars Still useful.......2006-12-26

Despite the book's age, it's still very useful -- San Diego doesn't seem to change that fast! The Tijuana section in particular is quite good. Like every Lonely Planet guide, though, it could have used a bit more editing to rein in the author's particular oddball biases.

4 out of 5 stars San Diego is the place to be!.......2001-09-28

The book was very good except that is does miss out some Hostel's I stayed out that were just outstanding! One special one was only two blocks "Pacific Beach" in San Diego, corner of Cass and Garnet Streets called the "International House on the Second Floor". They especially cater for international tourist's and students, and are some of the best people I have ever met, it's also the cleanest Hostel around!. San Diego and Tijuana are very interesting and different but are both just beautiful. The book itself was quite detailed and everything was where it was suppose to be. One of the best in the Lonely Planet series!

I really liked Kari it was a very faced pacedc plot and kept me very interested. I found it quiet easy to relate to. Everyone is embaressed sometimes, and if you haven't wait until your bf comes over to pick you up for your date. I also found Kari a very likable person, but personally i really liked lucy a lot better.
