      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-12-27

I've bought a few other books on backyard orchards and have been disappointed. I found this book at the library and it's the best I've seen. The other books made pruning seem very intimidating so I've been putting it off. After reading this book, I feel like I'm ready to give it a try. It covers all the fruits that interest me, even oddballs like currants and persimmons. The book contains all the things a beginner needs to know such as solving pest problems (insect, disease and animal), how/where to plant, pruning and a number of other subjects. The chapters are arranged in a logical sequence and the book is very easy to read. The second half of the book is devoted to the different fruits. Fruits are arranged alphabetically and there is anywhere from one to four pages devoted to each one. Even though this may not sound like much, each page is nicely arranged and gives a wealth of information. I especially like the handy symbols on the outer edges of each fruit page. For example, one very handy symbol is "attention required". One gardening glove means it's easy to grow, two gloves means some attention is required, three means moderately difficult and four means the plant is demanding. I've had a rough time with my peach tree and sure enough, the book gives peaches four gloves (demanding). Wish I had read this book before I started planting my orchard. I plan to buy a copy of this book for use as a reference.

      5 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......2003-12-22

I bought this book as a gift but when I recieved it, I loved it so much that I wanted to keep it for my husband! Lots of information with pictures to help you with the various diseases fruit trees get. I would definately recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for My Needs.......2002-06-05

I was so pleased with the overall appearance of this book that I didn't even make it to the house to read it. I sat down at the picnic table and scanned it cover to cover! Backyard Fruits and Berries is helping me to identify and care for fruit trees and berries on a newly aquired property where the gardens have been neglected for years. The photos and illustrations are superb and the author instructs the reader how to make and use homemade organic products. This book is perfect for any beginner like myself. I even returned to purchase a second copy for my mother who already has basic knowledge. Thank you.

      4 out of 5 stars A good beginners guide........1999-05-26

This book is well organized and pleasing to read. The encyclopedia section is very informative as to ease of care, suitability for containers, recommended varieties, etc. There is also a good section on pruning and training of trees, which is the scariest part of growing fruit, in my opinion! A very good primer for the beginner!

      Book Description

Nine years after the publication of Comets and the Origin and Evolution of Life, one of the pioneering books in Astrobiology, this second edition revisits the role comets may have played in the origins and evolution of life. Recent analyses of Antarctic micrometeorites and ancient rocks in Australia and South Africa, the continuing progress in discovering complex organic macromolecules in comets, protostars and interstellar clouds, new insights into organic synthesis in comets, and numerical simulations of comet impacts on the Earth and other members of the solar system yield a spectacular wealth of new results.

This second edition is thus actually a new book. As the first edition it is intended as a comprehensive review of current research, accessible to graduate students and others new to the field. Each chapter was prepared by experts to give an overview of an aspect of the field, and carefully revised by the editors for uniformity in style and presentation.

Series of articles considering the role of comets in the evolution of Earth's biosphere. For example, A. Delsemme writes about The Origin of the Atmosphere and of the Oceans. It is argued that Earth's atmosphere and its oceans, as well as much of the carbon found in its biosphere, was brought to the Earth by comets. Although present-day impacts of comets are modest, in the first billion years, and especially first half billion years, of the Earth's existence, a large bombardment of comets occurred, as reflected by the cratering record observed on the Moon, Mars and Mercury. The cometary delivery of matter would explain the siderophile metals in the Earth's crust, and would explain how an ocean and atmosphere remained despite depletion by large body impacts.

          Book Description

This groundbreaking volume explores evidence indicating that life on Earth began with the arrival of comets four billion years ago. It also theorizes that life on Earth is not unique, as the general scientific community tends to believe, and postulates that all living matter derives from the cosmic matter that make up comets that were formed in the early days of our galaxy. Also discussed are the numerous ways comets could bring an end to life, such as by introducing bacteria and viruses that cause epidemics, or by creating a new ice age from comet dust shrouding the planet from the sun.

This book is the best, but I think I could do without all the colored pictures, a smaller book, and less expensive. After all, are you going fishing, or sitting in your recliner looking at all the nice pictures?

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and comprehensive, an excellent reference for fishing in Alaska.......2007-07-12

I was very pleased with this purchase. The book covers all of the major sport fish that can be expected in Alaska. Each species gets a detailed treatment including biology, tackle, fishing techniques, and some of the best places to go for each species. The authors also provide a detailed discussion of the various geographic regions of the state (including contact information for guides and air taxis) making it easy to plan a fishing trip by region or by species. The book is filled with photography that beautifully illustrates the fish and places of Alaska.

            5 out of 5 stars Explore Alaska.......2007-04-12

Any fisherman planning a trip to Alaska should check out this reference. There are tips on hiring a guide and exploring the waterways on your own.

This book should definately be on your list if you are planning a fishing trip to Alaska. It is the most comprehesive source of information that I have seen.

Lazy sunsets and leisurely cruises are for milksops, according to Brad Olsen. The adrenaline rush is what he seeks, what he knows all about, and what he sets before you in Extreme Adventures Northern California. He tells you at the outset that his book is not for wimps or prima donnas--some degree of physical fitness is required, but just as important is a willing frame of mind. Each adventure, from rope swings to skyboarding, is rated for risk (Novice-Friendly to Professionals Only) and adrenaline (Kid's Stuff to Absolute Hairball), so you know from the get go what you'll be getting into. There are mellow activities like touring Gold Rush ghost towns, death-defying stunts like skiing Squaw Peak Chute, and low-risk, high-rush adventures like bungee jumping the Rubicon River. Olsen poo-poos the major lame excuses (like "the water is too cold" or "I'm afraid of sharks") and his enthusiasm and verve are infectious. --Stephanie Gold

Reading this book, along with my other guide book to California, I discovered far more interesting things to do in "Extreme Adventures" during my visit to California. The "Extreme" doesn't always apply -- there are mellow hikes, bike rides, raft trips, etc. -- but if you're looking for some fun off the beaten trail, this is it! I liked Brad Olsen's other books "World Stompers" and "Sacred Places" too. He writes (and illustrates) in a way that I think I'm hanging out with the guy!

3 out of 5 stars kinder and gentler CYOA.......2005-01-10

This is a relatively easy read and isn't as dark or sophisticated as 'Your Code Name is Jonah' or 'Space and Beyond'. Since the hero is a kid, it's hard to get killed unless you try to make the Indians angry. There are a number of quick happy endings. Some of the other endings are ho-hum. Malloy, the sharp teethed bandit, isn't all that hard to beat unless you try to do gun battle with him, and even then he doesn't kill you (you're just a kid, remember?). The book is not all that bad, but adults would want to find nostalgia with the other books and leave this one for the little kiddies.

            5 out of 5 stars Deadwood City.......2000-05-04

I think Deadwood City was great, because you can choose your own way to go. I got a job in the ghost town. I left beforeI got killed. I also got stopped by Indians on the way, I snuck away, stopped at a water hole to drink and fill my canteen. Only a few more more miles and I was in Silver Springs. I got a job from an old friend and that was the end of my story. There are plenty of more mays to go. Another thing is they are fun because you don't know what is going to happen next.

4 out of 5 stars An early classic.......2000-03-16

The cowboy genre seemed a natural one for the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series to venture to, and luckily it did so in the early days, when ideas were fresh and master Edward Packer was in top form. Accordingly, we get the whole western panorama here, from gambling saloons to small town newspapers to desperadoes, gold prospecting, ranching, etc. Parts of this one do seem to bog down here and there, as you keep endlessly saddling up to go to Silver Springs, and not really getting anywhere. But overall it's good fun.

5 out of 5 stars "Old school", 80's style entertainment.......1999-07-06

This was the no holds barred, thrill-ride of the '84 summer. This book encapsulated an era of youthful exuberance, at the end of the Cold War. Before these present-day spoiled kids came along, kids used to pick up a book and read. Not play computer games endlessly or surf the internet. We played outside and read. And "Deadwood City" is one pretty darned good example of what the literature was back in the good ol' days of the 80's.

As a fan of the show "Deadwood" I was looking for a book that gave a idea of the actual place and time. This book does it well. While not a great biography of Wild Bill, it does capture Deadwood in the late 1800's. I chose this book because of the other reviews and was not disappointed. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Deadwood or just interested in that time period of US History.

Turner provides some of the best detailed information on Hickok's death inside the No. 10 Saloon. This is not a biography on Hickok, but rather an excellent source guide to early Deadwood and the area events at the time during and immediately following Wild Bill's shooting, which seems to be the author's intent. The detailed narration is very enjoyable and easy to read, and Turner has provided well researched photos and original maps of early Deadwood, including being credited with uncovering the original location of the trial of Jack McCall, Hickok's murderer. Young readers will enjoy the great history lesson!

            3 out of 5 stars Not a great biography.......2001-12-19

Over all, I was disappointed in this book. Early in this book (pg 31) Mr Turner writes in reference to the Little BigHorn battle, "Some of Custer's personal family members, including his brother Captain Tom Custer, Nephew Boston Custer, and a brohter in law were killed with him in the battle..." Boston Custer was George Custer's brother. Not his nephew. This glaring mistake made me skeptical of his research. But the biographical information on Wild Bill was just a rehashing of previous material anyway. Turner relied heavily on Joesph G Rosa's earlier works on this topic and he does give him credit. The strength of this work is the vivid picture that Turner aptly describes of Deadwood during Hickok's time. If one is looking for a very detailed picture of Deadwood, this is a great source. But as a biography on Hickok this pales in comparison to Rosa's work on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Reminder of My 80's Childhood!.......2000-04-05

"Choose Your Own Adventure" books ROCK! I rememberspending many a late night in bed with a flashlight reading theselittle literary gems endlessly, trying to make sure I'd tried every possible story option. These books come out once a month like clockwork and I'd be first in line with my allowance to purchase the latest in the series. All the books are terrific, but I particularly remember liking "Who Killed Harlowe Thrombey" and "The Mystery of Chimney Rock". These blooks are long out of print, but well worth the search!
