Coming of Age in the Great Depression: The Civilian Conservation Corps in New Mexico, 1933-1942
Richard Melzer Manufacturer: Yucca Tree Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1881325415 |
Book Description
In the depths of the Great Depression, one of the bright spots in President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal was the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). For 3,000,000 young men across the United States it was the difference between starvation and survival; it was an opportunity to help their families financially; it was a means of learning skills, trades, and obtaining an education; it was a coming of age where they became mature, disciplined and productive citizens. The CCC camps in New Mexico provided over 50,000 young men from the state and across the nation with these valuable opportunities. The men were not the only beneficiaries. The New Mexico State Parks system became a reality because of CCC work on park sites. Flood control in the form of dams and conservation projects aided communities, farmers, and ranchers. Many of the camps worked at National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service locations. CCC conservation and construction projects were so well built that many are still in use today. Their unique style of Southwestern furniture makes those pieces collector items.
There was no intention to make the CCC a para-military unit, and strong measures were taken to ensure this did not happen. Ironically, the advent of World War II was the demise of the CCC camps when former CCC enrollees were avidly sought by Army recruiters because they were well disciplined and had skills useful to America's war-time army.
Told in the words of former enrollees, Coming of Age in the Great Depression is a fresh, positive look at an otherwise dark period in our history.

Space and Eternal Life - A Philosophical Dialogue.......2000-05-27
In his foreward to the book, Sir Fred Hoyle states, "Many challenging problems face humankind as we approach the dawn of the new century. This book expolores some of these problems.... "
In closing the discussion, Ikeda states, "The advance of astronomy and unfolding of cosmology will expand humanity's awareness so that it encompasses the entire Earth.... "
Incredibly Diverse in Range.......2000-03-08
In this dialogue, the two men probe some of the deepest aspects of our existence. They touch on everything from Religion to Near-Death Experiences to Nuclear Weapons to AIDS to the Big Bang Theory and more.
As the dialogue unfolds, both the Buddhist viewpoint and an astronomer's view of the world are expressed, side by side, with interesting comparisons between the two.
While at first sight Buddhist philosophy might seem to lack the advantages of the empirical methodology of science in its exploration of the physical world, Buddhism's treatment of psychology, including the idea of many states of consciousness, appears to be remarkably sophisticated in modern terms.
This book also shows how ancient Buddhist ideas of cosmology are in tune with modern scientific thoeries. Fascinating through and through.

Amber waves of grain and hallowed haunts...........2001-11-03
Strutin asks--what is the American Midwest? She outlines what she thinks comprises the area and discusses the forests, wetlands, huge fresh water lakes, and prairie that can still be found throughout the region. She imagines what the first European explorers must have seen when they arrived. She says, for example, the word prairie is French for meadow. French explorers were the first Europeans to travel extensively through the American plains. They saw the amazing wide open spaces where grass grew 10 feet tall and lacking any other word, likened it to their own grass meadows back home. The French named many places from Des Moines to Des Plains.
Strutin says conservationists are working to restore parts of the prairie to their natural state. She explains some of the research involved in determining the correct proportions of Asclepia (Butterfly Weed); Echinacea; Daisy; and other flora in a region that contains one of the three major U.S. flyways for birds, butterflies and other migratory animals.
PLACES also contains photos and text about non-prairie areas in upper Michigan and Wisconsin where hugh forests once existed as anyone who has ever read Laura Ingalls Wilder's LITTLE HOUSE IN THE BIG WOODS or heard of Paul Bunyun knows. Even today this area is a source of timber and home to many paper mills, though a good deal of the timber is being recovered from the bottom of Lake Michigan where it landed a century ago.
Irving and Strutin could have called their book HIDDEN PLACES OF GRACE. There are many wonderful nooks and crannies that somehow escaped the developer's axe, and today are protected in one way or another. This is an interesting and beautiful book.

The Place at the Edge of the Earth
Bebe Faas Rice Manufacturer: Clarion Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0618159789 |
Book Description
Jenny Muldoon has just moved to Fort Sayers, an army base built on the site of a school where, long ago, children from different Native American tribes were taken to be taught white culture. Jenny has a big chip on her shoulder: she's not happy about sharing her mother with a new stepfather or about moving to yet another school. And now she feels more alone than everuntil she discovers that someone is sharing her room, someone from another time and place. It's the ghost of a boy named Jonah Flying Cloud, who died at the Indian school in 1880. In a series of nighttime visitations, Jenny learns that Jonah's spirit is trapped, unable to go on to the land of his ancestors. In order to help Jonah find release, Jenny has to dig into a past that's been buried for years, to reveal the startling truth about the place at the edge of the earth. Written with sensitivity and emotion and based on historical accounts, this novel will leave a lasting impression on readers everywhere.Customer Reviews:

Another fine novel from Bebe Faas Rice........2003-01-31
This is a book to be treasured by children (of all ages) and their
parents. Like all great books, it is a "keeper", one to read and
reread and share with family and friends.
The Place at the Edge of the Earth--Highly recommended!.......2003-01-07
Scrupulously researched, this book is a fascinating dramatized account of a young Lakota boy who is forced, along with other Indian children, to attend a boarding school in the late 1800s for the purpose of assimilation into white society. The story follows Jonah Flying Cloud on his frightening trip to the school in Pennsylvania where his hair is cut (a sign of mourning with his people), his Indian clothes taken from him, and he's made to wear scratchy long underwear, thick woolen uniforms, and shoes that hurt his feet. His days are scheduled by bells and bugles, and he's marched to meals and classes where he's taught to speak the white man's language. He's even taken to church and told he'll burn in a fiery pit forever if he doesn't accept the white man's god. Jonah Flying Cloud dies, brokenhearted, at the school and is trapped between the place of his earthly life and "the land above the clouds, where the eagles fly."
Jonah Flying Cloud's first-person narrative unfolds in alternating chapters with present-day Jenny Muldoon's story. Jenny moves with her mother and new stepfather to military quarters at Fort Sayers, which once housed the Indian school. When she finds out that her new home was once the school infirmary, the stage is set for her to meet the spirit of Jonah Flying Cloud who needs her help to be released from his dark half-world so that he can join his family and tribe members in the afterworld.
Both stories keep the reader moving quickly through the pages. In an interesting subplot, Jenny helps a friend, the son of the commanding general at Fort Sayers, stand up to his father and get help for his alcoholic mother. At the end, Jenny is finally able to figure out how to help her Indian friend. The novel ends with a final, poignant scene between Jenny and Jonah Flying Cloud.
This book a must for anyone interested in learning about the Indian schools. Its compelling story is sure to capture the interest and imagination of readers of all ages. Highly recommended!
A Book That Speaks To The Heart.......2002-12-09
gradually become sensitive of one another's feelings.
This is a well-told, smoothly flowing tale, a real page turner. Rice has a knack for
perfectly capturing the way young people talk, how they respond to one another and to
adults. Once again, balance comes into play in the way the author weaves flashes of
humor into the central, serious story line.
Though I hated to have the book end, my spirit soared at the conclusion, which
deserves to be read and reread several times. It's truly beautiful.
The Author's Note, where Rice speaks of writing this book "from the heart"
should not be missed. I wouldn't be surprised if The Place At The Edge Of The Earth
garners several awards, both for its writing craft and the importance of its subject.
