A Welcome Guidebook.......2007-02-08
This is a great basic book for trainers who need to know about being a good trainer, how to effectively formulate and realise training objectives, how lessons can be improved, how to motivate participants, among several other critical topics. It has a lot of tips and practical advice that should help you to become a more effective trainer.
Trainers, like many professionals, are wary of all the garbage that poses as valid information. They need to cut through the noise to get the real meat, and they do not have a lot of time to paddle through superfluous space-filling material that does not contribute to what they need to know. The author of "Basic Training for Trainers", Gary Kroehnert, get right into content. The writing is concise, supported by graphics where needed. Bullet points at appropriate points reinforce what needs to be done to achieve solid accomplishment of objectives. Most chapters have their own application examples as well as references for those who wish to pursue this interesting subject further.
I use the book as a quick reference guide and I find the checklists included very useful and helpful. This book carries pertinent information, but it is organised and written in such a way that is easily digestible. The book is recommended as a resource kit for the trainer or student.

Great book, well written, easy to read. I am a trainer of some 40 years, still training in former Soviet Union, and looking for a book to recommend to new trainers. Found it!

Solid Basic Guide for First Time Trainers.......2000-10-29
If you have a generic training session to conduct, and want a quick, large format guide to training and training preparation, this is a reasonable choice. I used a few of the checklists for course design. However, for computer training needs, there are better choices such as Paul Clothier's Computer Training book. For general practice and theory of adult learning, I would recommend Robert Pike's Training Techniques book.
Basic, Basic, Basic!!!.......2000-08-29
The book offers extremely limited "trainer" information, and delivers basic common sense information. If you interested in learning more about the field, there are far better "basic" books available on the subject. The format of the book is poorly structured, and doesn't convey needed training knowledge.

The list of drills are comprehensive, meets the needs of every position, and are well organized. The graphics are poor, and there are no support pictures. If this book is updated with better graphics, I would highly recommend.

I liked this book very much. For anybody that wants a solid knowledge of how to coach any position, this book is a must have. I found the drills to be very well drawn and easy to understand. I would definitely recommend this book.

I have lots of drill books on my shelves, but this book actually gives coaching pointers for each drill. It tells you what you ought to tell the kids during the drill. This aspect of the book has been invaluable to my assistant coaches and to many of our feeder coaches in junior high, even the Pop Warner League. It not only shares an absolute wealth of drills, it emphasizes the necessary fundamentals for each player. I really think this is the best drill book on the market.

I've been coaching football for almost thirty years, and I've never seen a more complete book of football drills. This book has a minimum of 35 to 40 drills for every position on the field -- both offense and defense. It even covers agility drills and special teams. I can't imagine any football coach being without one. This one has it all!

In preparing this book I have kept in mind two major aims: First, and foremost, to make the book as useful as possible. Every drill is explained in detail, and, when feasible, is further clarified by line drawings or photographs. Thus, the book's mail value is as a reference to the specific problems of teaching skills.
Second, to present and include only drills that have been proven. This has automatically ruled out approximately one hundred drills on hand that are interestnig but not yet tested.
The present edition differs from the original text in four respects. First, it includes new drills and illustrations. Second, it contains an entirely new part on conditioning drills complete with photographs especially prepared for each drill. Third, it presents a complete new chapter on quarterback drills. To the author's knowlege, this is the first time a complete chapter on drills to train the quarterback has appeared in print. And, finally, it includes additional material and ideas to supplement the chapter on practice organization.

Meghan is full of rage. First her mother died. It was hard and it turned her father into a very strict man who doesn't seem to have sympathy for his three children anymore. He pushed Meghan's adored older brother Killian into going to Vietnam, which destroyed Killian. He pushed Meghan to take a running scholarship at a prestigious boarding school, saying it would help her future.
The last straw is when Meghan loses one of her legs to cancer. Running is the one thing in her life that she loves and that calms her when she needs it. Now she is stuck in a hospital bed, trying to recover from her surgery and not wanting to use the prosthetic leg that will eventually help her to walk again.
Meghan spends her time in the hospital reflecting on her life, visiting with her younger sister, thinking about her brother and becoming angrier and angrier with her father for all of the things she thinks he has ruined in her life. She also writes notes to her idol, Abraham Lincoln, who lived in her Illinois town and is a huge part of the history there. Will writing these notes help her to come to terms with herself and her life?
I liked learning about Meghan's life little by little and seeing what the events were leading up to her being in the hospital in the state of mind she was in. I also liked the history of Lincoln woven into this story, and the history of Vietnam also playing a part in the book.
I didn't like that Meghan was so angry at her father that he never had a chance to explain himself or his point of view.
Beware of offensive language.......2005-05-04
When 16-year-old Meghan, who has been a star runner, loses her leg to cancer and her brother to Vietnam, she expresses intense anger. She writes postcards to her idol, Abraham Lincoln, wishing that somehow he could help her work through her resentments.
This book should be for mature readers only because of the offensive language.
Short chapters = fast pace.......2003-08-04
Her brother is shell-shocked from his tour of duty in Vietnam. She doesn't get along with her banker father. Her sister, a math genius, struggles to make sense of it all. She has been expelled from school. Her mother is dead. She is lying in a hospital, recovering from the cancer that stole her runner's legs. And in an O. Henry moment, her estranged best friend sends her a pair of running shoes.
As Meghan recovers from her amputation, she finds connections to Abraham Lincoln through cornfields, feet, war, writing, and tragedy. Interesting and little-known facts about Lincoln surface naturally in the narrative. Desperate for a father figure, bitter over her tragedies, and unable to express herself to her therapist, Meghan writes postcards to the past president to release her fury and confusion. She feels a strong bond between Lincoln's suffering and her own, and wonders if she too can rise above it all.
The chapters that reveal Meghan's late 60's past and 1972 present are short but never spartan. Illinois cornfields are painted with vibrant and succinct detail; the joy of running is portrayed beautifully, making this an excellent choice for female athletes. Chapters read like diary entries, and move fluidly from past to present in even strides. Not all loose ends are tied up, but by the end it is clear the Meghan is on the road to emotional and physical recovery, taking small steps each day.
A bibliography would have been a welcome addition to this book. Readers who want to know more about Lincoln after this novel should be directed to Abraham Lincoln: A Writer's Life: by Harold Holzer for insights into Lincoln as a writer, and Russell Freedman's Lincoln: A Photobiography for more details about the tragic figure of Lincoln.
The Best book I have read in a long time........2002-05-25
This is the best book i have read in a long time. 16- year- old Meghan is angry with the world. She is angry at her father(whom she calls THE BANKER) because he sent her brother Killian, off to fight in the Korean War, agnst Killian's will. The Korean War has ruined Killian's way of thinking. She is angry at Dr. Take-more, and Dr. Take-less, for taking away her leg. She is mangry at the nuns in her old school for expelling her. She is angry at her day nurse for having somebody ele's baby. She is anry at Sam for trying to help her learn to run again. Throughout her hard times, she turnes to her hero, Abraham Lincon who has been dead for a while. Throughout the book she writes postcards to her her hero on anything she can find.
This compelling novel should be on the bookshelf of all teens.
An involving, compelling story........2000-05-09
Ages 12 and older will find this an involving story telling of an ex-runner's struggle with the removal of her leg due to cancer. Her anger and struggle to overcome her disability take the form of letters written to a past idol, Abe Lincoln, which help her come to grips with her life.
