The true beauty of a farming life.......2003-07-05
One of my favorite books, does a great job of expressing the joy, the hardship, the realities, and the beauty of farming. A must read for anyone who wants to have a small family farm.
Martha Stewart meets Maine!.......1998-08-27
Terry Silber deserves credit for making her move to Maine work. It should be noted that farming is not the reason for her success, retail would be more accurate. Throughout the book there is the feeling that she feels herself above her new neighborhood. I would be curious to see how her new homestate views her. A finacial success; she has achieved. Beyond that?

Sort of an "Outermost House," relocated to Maine.......2004-09-08
Henry Beston is best known for writing about his solo Cape Cod beach experience in "The Outermost House." A few years later he married author Elizabeth Coatsworth, and they bought a farm in Maine. First published in 1948, "Northern Farm" recounts a calendar year's worth of rural life in that northern clime. Brrrr.
The chronological narrative begins as the Bestons return to their snow-covered fields and ice-capped pond after celebrating the Christmas season with friends in New York. Each chapter combines factual events with entries from Beston's farm diary, plus his summary philosophical statements. And boy, does winter sure seem to last a long time! It frames the progression of the book. Thankfully Beston takes the opportunity to describe the wildlife he's able to encounter between snowstorms. An overwhelming sense of community surfaces here as well. Remember: this story takes place in a farming landscape just after WWII, before a television could be found in every living room, and when people relied on each other for help during challenging times. They were the kind of times when you left a lantern burning in the front room so that you could more easily find your way home after attending a church supper on a rainy night. "The good old days," for some.
In addition to his notes about managing a small farm and following Nature's course, Beston ruminates about international issues. The war is still fresh in his mind, and he needs to speak about it. Read in post-9/11 times, his comments strike an eerie chord of familiarity. For example:
"No age in history can afford to lay too much emphasis upon 'security.' The truth is from our first breath to our last we inhabit insecurely a world which must of transitory nature be insecure, and that moreover any security we do achieve is but a kind of an illusion. While admitting that a profound instinct towards such safety as we can achieve is part of our animal being, let us also confess that the challenge involved in mere existence is the source of many of the greater virtues of human character." (page 47, in my paperback copy)
Wow! And that's just one of his astute observations.
"Northern Farm" describes a simpler time and place that we'll never see again, regretfully. This is a book well worth tracking down. Just be prepared for A LOT of winter!
Stirs the Yoeman farmer in each of us!.......1998-03-18
This is a delightful work. The writing is superb. It is a quick read, too quick. I wish it went on for several hundred pages more. It is one of those books that once you finish it the next book you read seems flat and dull. It is about a year he spent on his farm in Maine. It is filled with wonderful, arftul, inciteful, descriptive glimpses into this world and humanity. It stirs the soul and has a way of making one want to go right outside and plant something. A great read for anyone who likes nature or great writing in general.

Book Description
The global structure of the heliosphere changes dramatically with the solar circle. Our knowledge of the heliosphere in three dimensions under solar-minimum conditions has advanced significantly in the last 10 years, largely as a result of the on-going ESA/NASA Ulysses mission.
Similar advances in our understanding of the heliosphere at solar maximum are to be expected with the return of Ulysses to the Sun's polar regions in 2000/2001. The papers in this volume address a wide range of topics related to the solar-maximum heliosphere, and include many of the latest findings from Ulysses and other space-based missions.
Ground-based studies and theoretical modeling are also well represented. Specific questions include: what are the dominant processes that determine the global structure of the inner heliosphere under conditions of high solar activity, and what are the key differences between the high-latitude heliosphere at solar maximum and solar minimum?
The book is intended for those carrying out active research in the fields of solar and heliospheric physics.
Book Description
Landscape ecology is a widely influential approach to looking at ecological function at the scale of landscapes, and accepting that human beings powerfully affect landscape pattern and function. It goes beyond investigation of pristine environments to consider ecological questions that are raised by patterns of farming, forestry, towns, and cities.
Placing Nature is a groundbreaking volume in the field of landscape ecology, the result of collaborative work among experts in ecology, philosophy, art, literature, geography, landscape architecture, and history. Contributors asked each other: What is our appropriate role in nature? How are assumptions of Western culture and ingrained traditions placed in a new context of ecological knowledge? In this book, they consider the goals and strategies needed to bring human-dominated landscapes into intentional relationships with nature, articulating widely varied approaches to the task.
In the essays:
novelist Jane Smiley, ecologist Eville Gorham, and historian Curt Meine each examine the urgent realities of fitting together ecological function and culture
philosopher Marcia Eaton and landscape architect Joan Nassauer each suggest ways to use the culture of nature to bring ecological health into settled landscapes
urban geographer Judith Martin and urban historian Sam Bass Warner, geographer and landscape architect Deborah Karasov, and ecologist William Romme each explore the dynamics of land development decisions for their landscape ecological effects
artist Chris Faust's photographs juxtapose the crass and mundane details of land use with the poetic power of ecological pattern.
Every possible future landscape is the embodiment of some human choice. Placing Nature provides important insight for those who make such choices-ecologists, ecosystem managers, watershed managers, conservation biologists, land developers, designers, planners-and for all who wish to promote the ecological health of their communities.

Customer Reviews:
Rewarding.......2006-04-12
This is a fabulous book. The reader will be rewarded again and again. Mike Lupica has done a worthy job as editor.
Let's face it, there is no shortage of good writing out there. Just like when we see a film, like it or not, the technical work is outstanding. The challenge for the editor is to create, using his selections, an introduction to the greater narratives that underlie the sensibility of the genre. Sports, in 2005, having never lost the ability to inspire, having those wonderful stories of determination, of grit, of overcoming odds, of personal victory are now also tales of despondency, of scandal, of defeat not just on a personal level, but also at the grander scale that we now experience this global world. So Lupica takes us on an emotional journey that captures as a snapshot the world we live in. The stories are the links in the chain. The chain as a whole, the journey as a whole, is wonderfully well thought out and perfectly executed. I cannot say enough about this book.
If you like this book, and this style of meta-narrative, please check out the 2004 Best American Travel Writing, edited by Pico Ayer. He carves out an incredible emotional journey, in alphabetical order!

Customer Reviews:
Great photos!.......2007-07-23
Lovely inspiring photos and the daily calendar squares are large enough to write in if you use a wall calendar for appointments. Would consider purchasing again for 2008.
Good pictures; Big boxes.......2006-12-30
I typically need large calendar boxes to fit all of my appointments, and this one works fantastically. I also love all of the different pictures. There is typically one picture per day, although on some days one larger picture will spread across two days. I love travelling, and so this calendar (as well as last year's) has given me some great ideas. If you like travelling, Lonely Planet, or large calendar boxes, this is a great calendar.
Book Description
Ginny Aiken, Ranee McCollum, Jeri Odell, and Debra White Smith
A Bouquet of Love contains four romance novellas set in contemporary America, each featuring the gift of a very special bouquet. Strong biblical themes echo through each story as readers learn of God's forgiveness, the importance of communication and honesty in marriage, seeking God's will through reading his Word, and the importance of a person's internal qualities. Romance fans will enjoy the diversity of themes and the distinctive styles of these four gifted writers.
Customer Reviews:
Four worthwhile short reads from some really talented authors.......2007-09-11
"The Wrong Man" by Ginny Aiken finds Brad and Carrie in a comical relationship based on mistaken identity. Carrie is fighting her attraction because Brad has made it clear that he's not looking for a serious relationship. But as they get to know each other, Brad realizes that his plans and God's plans may be slightly different. This is a neat story with good romantic build-up, but the end comes too abruptly.
In Renee McCollum's "His Secret Heart," Gwen and Adam have worked next door to each other for years. Adam has a crush on Gwen, but she's only seen him as a "computer geek". Now, that she is developing a relationship with a mystery man from church, she is beginning to see Adam in a different light. Will Gwen choose the man she's never seen? Or the man she is now seeing with new eyes? This is a terrific story about not judging a book by its cover! It inspires me to take a deeper look at the people in my life instead of relying on superficial impressions.
Jeri Odell's "Come To My Love" chronicles the tale of Harrison and Korby, childhood friends who are reunited when Harrison is widowed. Korby still sees Harrison with innocent eyes, but Harrison only sees his mistakes and how unworthy he is of Korby's love. Will they overcome the obstacles that face them, or say "goodbye" for good? This is a truly sweet story of how God's plan for our lives doesn't cease to exist because of our detours. It also does a really good job of encouraging the reader in the fact that God still uses broken people.
"Cherish" by Deborah White Smith tells the story of Belle and Joe, a married couple in a rut. Belle feels less than cherished, and decides to leave the relationship the same day that she learns they are expecting a child. This is a beautifully told story about forgiveness and making an effort to enhance your relationships beyond flowers and gifts.
A Solid Short Read.......1999-05-04
This book was great for on the run readers. The novels are short and to the point, but are still genuine and portray a message. I finished the book in two days while traveling. Check this one out!! =)
