Book Description
Based on a people-tested and time-tested system, this book gives you detailed strategies to show you how to master your money by budgeting effectively, reducing debt, and investing wisely. It examines the reasons why we struggle with spending, borrowing, and saving, and how to get these habits under control. The book is based on 10 step-by-step principles that build upon each other, culminating in an entire system that gets to the heart of: why we spend, and how to track and control spending; the factors that keep people perpetually in debt, and how you can eliminate debt completely (including mortgage) in nine years or less; why you may not be saving as much as you'd like, and how you can velocitize your money for future wealth. Also included is a section on tax reduction which dispels the myths surrounding taxation that keep people paying more than the law actually requires.
Customer Reviews:
Unlike any other Money book.......2006-02-10
This is an amazing book. No other book has made a deep and lasting difference on my finances because they all missed something. This book teaches both principles and practical steps, and uses real-world examples (from people they have worked with) to drive the points home. I understand more, and as a result, I'm actually living better. My money can no longer kick me around.
The authors have told me how (and why) to control my money, and it's fun! No budgeting, because budgets are negative and don't work in the real world. Instead, they have shown me how to spend my money well. Their preferred spending method has a nice side-effect of also tax-proofing me along the way. It's very rewarding.
The further I get in the book, the more exciting it gets. Their taxinformation is ethical, easy, audit-proof, and will save me a ton of money (and effort) on my taxes.
The authors are passionate about helping people control their money instead of being slaves to it. As I have read and used their methods, money has become a tool instead of a slave master. I haven't "arrived" yet, but my power to control money growing, and it's a good feeling.
Good advice, but nothing new.......2004-12-31
Decent advice, but if you've read these sort of books you will find nothing new. How does one objectively give financial advice while shamelessly self-promoting a product for sale? There are better books out there.
Good, but the authors want to sell you more than the book........2003-08-14
This book is full of valuable financial information, but then, so are many books. What sets this one apart from others is that, in addition to the standard good advice, it approaches money from the point of view of emotion.
The book starts out by having the reader examine how s/he feels when spending money. E.g., does it give one a bit of a thrill, or does it leave one feeling guilty? It then proceeds to a more traditional exposition of the lessons of finance, but the "emotional" approach permeates the book and allows one to see money issues in a new light.
The downside to this book, and the primary reason that I'm giving it four stars and not five, is that the authors use it, at times, as a catalog for their financial and estate-planning products. If you can ignore having overpriced "estate planning kits" marketed to you by those who are otherwise trying to help your finances, then it's worthwhile to read this book... even for those who have read more than their fair share of personal-finance books. It felt a little unseemly (to me anyway) to be reading how important it is not to spend money unnecessarily, and then in the next chapter read about how one needed their estate-planning kit that almost certainly provides, but at a much higher cost, no more information than the Dummies book on the same topic.
All things considered though--taken with a grain of salt--the book is very good.
Powerful Stuff!! Dare You To Implement It And Stick To IT!.......2003-04-02
This book is great. I will read it over and over for the rest of my life. Its entertaining and yet dense enough to be used as reference material well after you finish it. Amazingly organized. The subject matter progresses just as it should and the real life examples really bring the lessons to life. Empower yourself and think about your future and that of your children. Plan and never be in want. Not a strain to implement. Good for any situation. Go!!! That you folks at Money Mastery!!! I am now aware.
Best Kept Financial Secret In America........2002-04-24
WOW: As a working mom, I like to read finsncial books to help my family. This is clearly the best financial and tax planning book that I have ever read, as the other reviewers have also noted. It is clear, concise, simply written, and chuck full of financial and tax planning strategies. There is an especially good tax section by an IRS attorney that was immensely helpful for my small business and for people who are thinking of starting a small business. For example, I didn't know that I could deduct all my dry cleaning and laundry expenses after a business trip. The discussion on deducting my entertainment and golf was particularly interesting.
I have read many financial books including the Rich Dad/ Poor Dad series and "The Millionaire Next Door" by Stanley, and this book blows them all out of the water.
Trust me: This book is one of the better kept financial secrets. Its too bad these authors don't promote it more because it is fabulous. If there is any one financial book that you should read and give to your children, this one is it!

I was not impressed with this book. I had planned to use this in my classroom to introduce the phases of the moon. It is very small and lacks in-depth knowledge. Instead I bought and used "The Moon Book."

Exploring the deepness of Sylvia........2000-04-21
I think this book is a great way to introduce oceanography, ecology, marine biology and so forth. Andrea does a great job of summing up what Sylvia experiences and aspires as she explores the depths of the oceans. This book is mainly geared towards children of ages 9-12. I agree with the age range being appropriate. It introduces wonderful terms too. Included are wonderful pictures of Sylvia's encounters undersea. Definitely will make you want to explore more. However, I had hoped that it would include some more biographical information about Sylvia Earle.

An outstanding guide in all respects.......2002-09-09
This volume contains all you could ever need or want to know (and more!) about the history, Victorian to modern day, of the world's aquaria and oceanaria. It spans the globe entire, from the displays at the Crystal Palace to the Osaka Ring of Fire and its resident whale sharks! An awesome volume, with a handy guide to most of the world's internationally renowned marine centres. And who better to write a book on aquaria than Leighton Taylor, the man who discovered the Megamouth Shark?

Book Description
The comprehensive guide to anchoring systems for rock climbers.
Customer Reviews:
too complicated to be useful ?.......2007-10-02
I was a little disappointed about John Long new anchor book. I felt the book lost touch with the reality that climbing safe often means climbing fast, especially in the mountains and on long routes. . While the new tests reported on belay anchors are interesting, they seem to miss statistical validity and the conditions used to carry out the tests seem very extreme and seldom occur in real climbing. What the book does not say is how many accidents have occurred in the real climbing world because of the type of failures that were observed in the testing lab. If that is a significant number, I am willing to change the way I rig my anchors, otherwise it is probably better if I stick to my older simpler method. The solutions proposed to make better (more equalized) anchors are so complicated that it is difficult to imagine how to rig them properly after you climbed 20 pitches with a power bar for lunch. Maybe the information disclosed in the book is useful in specific cases, when all your pieces are awful. I am not an expert, but I just wonder if trying to make belay anchors so complicated at all the time, even when your pieces are great, may cause more accidents due to mistakes and more epics due to wasted time. I would appreciate an expert opinion on this matter. Thanks.
Concise, informative, and well researched.......2007-06-13
This is a well written and well researched book. The most significant aspect for me are the new tests on various anchors presented in the book. As a novice outdoor climber, I was most interested in rigging good top-rope anchors and was quite surpised to learn about the faults of the cordelette. Fortunately he introduces a better alternative called the equalette. He also dispels some myths about the sliding X and the fear many have of potential shock loading. The chapter where he describes the tests of various anchor setups is quite eye opening. It really begs for additional tests to be performed and has me thinking about what other false assumptions exist in this sport. A good reference and essential reading for any outdoor climber.
Building Solid Climbing Anchors.......2007-04-12
This newly updated reference guide will teach you how to build safe and secure anchors while climbing. These techniques have been scientifically tested.
The last word on climbing anchors.......2007-03-31
Climbing Anchors (2nd Edition) by John Long is a newly updated guide and reference to building safe and solid climbing anchors. It combines the best content from "Climbing Anchors" and "More Climbing Anchors" published in 1993 and 1996 respectively.
Here in one comprehensive volume is all the necessary instruction to help climbers place pro, tie critical knots, and construct SRENE anchors. Introduced in this volume is the "self-equalizing" but "limited extension" Equalette anchor system. This technique is an important one to have in a climber's anchor-builing arsenal.
Rocked my world.......2007-01-09
John Long has done the climbing community a great service with the publication of his updated climbing anchor book. His previous works helped create a defacto standard for anchor construction, but suffered from a lack of objective data to support its assertions.
In this new book Long has worked with others to scientifically test the anchoring technique he popularized with his last book, the cordelette. Through this testing he discovered that the cordelette is seriously flawed as a technique for equalizing anchors and puts forth the alternative of the "equalette", a technique that he has worked with others to test extensively in the lab and the the field.
I strongly recommend this book to any climber. As a climber with well over a decade of experience it challenged my assumptions and opened my eyes.

Amazon.com
The most valuable skill you can acquire as a traditional climber is the ability to build sturdy, reliable anchors. Without that, no amount of natural talent or dumb luck will allow you to live a long, healthy life as a rock climber. Fortunately, John Long's guide to climbing anchors is a definitive source, with sections on natural, equalized, haul bag, and rappelling anchors. Whether you're using spring-loaded, camming devices or the old-school, passive tri-cams, Long presents a number of creative options for nearly every possible situation. Long is a patient teacher and his writing is clear and concise, but it's the hundreds of illustrations that really drive his lessons home. --Benjamin Tiffany

Customer Reviews:
Very Close to a Personalized Lesson.......2007-03-26
For the climber, uninitiated or not, Long has given a very practical instruction on building and analyzing anchors. The first section of the books explains anchors and equipment used to build them. For a moment I thought I would be relying on translating the text to a picture in my head--requiring multiple reads. But the second section (pictures and detailed analyses of anchors) brought the entire book and its concepts together as well as any writer could. It was clear that Long put a lot of thought and labor into preparing the analysis section for the reader. This is the most you can get out of an instruction book without actually hiring an instructor. Additionally, Long's prose is very entertaining and witty in a realm where the material could be incredibly dry, keeping the pages turning.
Reason for 4/5 instead of 5/5: there are some concepts, such as the belayer's place in the anchor, that could have been included in this book without consulting another text. However, more than your money's worth from this book--a must for the trad and aid climber.
Read it. Get the sequel........2006-11-10
I survived my early years of climbing the old fashioned way: sheer, undeserved luck.
When I got back into it a few years ago, I decided that living until middle age might not be all that bad after all, so why not learn to do things right.
John Long's books on anchors (this one and More Climbing Anchors) were central to my re-education. Long's combination of experience, logic, and wit make these technical books fun to read. I find myself returning to them often.
The black and white pictures can be hard to decipher sometimes, and it does seem like we're due for the updated edition (which is supposed to be on the way). Until then, these books are the best resource on the subject.
Essential reading for trad climbing/natural anchor setup.......2003-05-09
This book is extremely valuable for learning how to place protection or setting up anchors for trad climbing or top rope anchor setup. My friends and I carefully studied this book and went out and practiced placing gear and setting up anchors from the ground. When we went and took an anchor building class, we learned a lot of good tips, but the information we learned from this book helped us rapidly advance in our class. This book also is very helpful after you learn your basics because you can analyze various anchor setups and compare it to the analysis in the book. One drawback of this or any other book is that a picture is never as good as inspecting protection on your own at various angles close up. For this reason, you will want to go climbing with a more experienced partner or an instructor so they can give you more detailed feedback on your own protection placement skills.
I am only a beginner..........2003-02-01
...but this is a fantastic book. I have been climbing since I was in high school, and I'm only 22, but I have had a desire to lead trad since the beginning and if there is anything that I can say to make feel more comfortable about spending [money] just to be safe, then I want to say it. This book changed my perception about trad before I was even able to develop one on my own. I read this book cover to cover in 48 hrs. not because it was spell-binding but because it is such valid information. Look, you need this, and Mountaineering "The Freedon of the Hills," to begin the library of an adventure seeking individual. But, this book is specifically useful because of all of it's definitively perfect pictures of placements of passive gear and active camming devices. You want this book, believe me, and if you won't buy it then e-mail me and I'll sell you mine, or give it to you because it would be a crying shame to deck out just because you were too silly to purchase a book on "How not to die, and have fun doing it."
Excellent Resource.......2002-01-09
Books on climbing technique have typically been incomplete in their coverage and lacking in illustrative detail. John Long's "How To Rock Climb" series has made a quantum leap in these areas and are the current standard-bearers. This book and its companion (More Climbing Anchors) show many possible anchor problems and discuss the pros and cons of several solutions for each. By practicing the techniques presented, trad climbers can improve the integrity of their anchors.
