Recent crises in emerging markets have been heavily driven by balance-sheet or net-worth effects. Episodes in countries as far-flung as Indonesia and Argentina have shown that exchange rate adjustments that would normally help to restore balance can be destabilizing, even catastrophic, for countries whose debts are denominated in foreign currencies. Many economists instinctually assume that developing countries allow their foreign debts to be denominated in dollars, yen, or euros because they simply don't know better.
Presenting evidence that even emerging markets with strong policies and institutions experience this problem, Other People's Money recognizes that the situation must be attributed to more than ignorance. Instead, the contributors suggest that the problem is linked to the operation of international financial markets, which prevent countries from borrowing in their own currencies. A comprehensive analysis of the sources of this problem and its consequences, Other People's Money takes the study one step further, proposing a solution that would involve having the World Bank and regional development banks themselves borrow and lend in emerging market currencies.

The compendium of papers in this volume focuses on aspects of economic uncertainty, financial instabilities and asset bubbles. Economic uncertainty is modeled in continuous time using the mathematical techniques of stochastic calculus. A detailed treatment of important topics is provided, including the existence and uniqueness of asymptotic economic growth, the modeling of inflation and interest rates, the decomposition of inflation and its volatility, and the extension of the quantity theory of money to allow for randomness. The reader is also introduced to the methods of chaotic dynamics, and this methodology is applied to asset pricing, the European equity markets, and the multi-fractality in foreign currency markets. Since the techniques of stochastic calculus and chaotic dynamics do not readily accommodate the presence of stochastic bubbles, several papers discuss in depth the presence of financial bubbles in asset prices, and econometric work is performed to link such bubbles to monetary policy. Finally, since bubbles often burst rather than deflate slowly, the last section of the book studies the crash of October 1987 as well as other crashes of national equity markets due to the Persian gulf crisis.

In most cases the problems caused by financial globalization are identical in various countries, which is why it is especially important to develop some standard solutions. Nevertheless, it is also doubtless that economic "recipes" for "small" and "big" countries can be different and it would be a mistake to apply only a uniform approach to all of them.
The book evaluates an international financial system development potential in the context of "corporate crises" started in the USA and a probable impact on international financial markets and business activities. With the introduction of the Euro, a "new three-pole world currency system" was established. In this connection, two quite sensational forecasts made during the last two years regarding the collapse of the US Dollar are analyzed. These forecasts make a pretty "gloomy picture" of the future of both the US Dollar and the international monetary system.
The book draw reader's attention to global exchange rate instability and its implications for Georgia. It is demonstrated that as a small economy, Georgia cannot have any substantial influence on global economic developments; however, if it succeeds to pursue more-or-less reasonable economic policy, it may generate some positive results, or at least minimize negative ones.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Department of Energy is focusing a long-term development effort on producing cheaper, safer, and faster state-of-the-art soil remediation technologies. To assist with the management of these innovative technology development projects, ways of quantifiably measuring technical risk were investigated through a detailed literature review. 'Technical risk' was defined in this study as the combination of the consequences of undesired events and their likelihood. Careful design of the inputs into a technology selection decision support system accounted for the uncertainty in forecasting final characteristics of remediation technologies still in the early phases of R&D. Experts made subjective probability estimates of these cost, schedule, and performance factors. Examination of several measures of final cost and schedule risk focused on communicating the risks inherent in different technological alternatives to the technology manager for operational, not theoretical, use. These risk measures included subjective measures, using utility theory, and objective measures, using variation about an expected value. A new measure was developed, the expected unfavorable deviation, which is similar but superior to the semi-variance as a measure of downside risk. These simple risk measures can be used whenever uncertainty is expressed through probability distributions of cost, schedule, and performance characteristics.

If you are a fan of adventure racing (AR), the author's reputation is quite familiar to you. Adamson is among the very best adventure racers in the world, with loads of big race experience.
He is also a good writer. The book is clear and readable. Most of the material will not be new to you if you have significant experience already, but there are tips and tricks and anecdotes that are both entertaining and illustrative.
The sport is so varied and demanding that no book, and certainly not one as brief as this one, can be complete in its coverage of it. However, there is a lot of good, accessible information here and you will not regret including this book in your AR library.
Note that as to gear recommendations, the equipment available is changing very quickly, and some preferences are just personal, so update your information before spending a lot on gear if your only reason for buying was because Ian likes it.

OUTSTANDING BOOK!.......2004-06-22
I have read two other books on Adventure Racing that were published before Ian's book came out in the market. Those two books were also good, in fact Ian wrote the foreword on both. But Ian's book came out a cut above the rest. His book offered his and his teamates "winning strategies and experiences". The book was intelligently written and commanded authority on all topics discussed such as proper training, purchasing and use of the right equipment, proper nutrition, good leadership and teamwork skills, sleep strategies etc. For sure the book will inspire and guide beginner racers to the sport, and will further provide veteran racers of new knowledge and valuable proven race strategies and techniques from Ian and his awesome NZ and OZ teamates. Ian is truly one of the best adventure racers in the world along with his mates John Howard and Steve Gurney. To sum it all up, this is an outstanding book, I can't wait to buy the second edition.

imagine you are shipwrecked on an island, and the only other companion you will find yourself with is an adventure racer, well, you better make sure that the fellow is ian adamson.his book on the sport is easy on the head and heart, written in a breezy, informative way. when he explains techniques and tips of the trade, it's not like you have to bash a few coconuts to figure out what he means. i recommend this how-to guide to both novices and experts, wanna-be Survivors (hey, there's a bunch of wilderness stuff here) and weekend warriors. thank your lucky navigational stars that ian has set forth in one volume years of accumulated wisdom as one of the toughest men on the planet.

Excellent guide.......2007-06-27
My friend and I did part of the trip last summer, and the guide was simply invaluable. We were in the major cities decribed in the book, and we took the train Irkutsk--Ulaan Baator. The book was very helpful both when we were planning the trip (has train schedules) and on the spot, directing us to places of interest. Overall, gives you a good idea what to expect. Start reading the guide at least half a year before the planned trip. You'll need good 4 to 5 months to arrange everything.

Useful Along the Railroad.......2007-03-07
I used this book while traveling along the Trans-Siberian railroad and in planning my trip beforehand. It provides a great amount of quality information for planning purposes, but it is not complete. For example, when it lists the time table of trains, please note that it is only a sample of the most popular "tourist" trains. We found hundreds of trains going along the route, leaving at all times of day and night (of course we figured this out once we got there).
The translations were useful if you do not know the Russian alphabet. The pronunciation guide is good.
The best part of the guide was the section which gave you fun facts along the kilometer markings of the railroad. These made up a great portion of our entertainment while riding the train (4 days of sitting and looking out the window, chatting with other travellers, etc.). The little tidbits were very interesting!
The city guides within the book were an okay start to get familiar with the cities, but as with any guidebook which tries to cram it all in, it was not nearly complete.
My only con of the book was the large size of it. It is very thick, but I guess it must be (it has sooooo much info inside!)
I would recommend buying it if you are traveling along the railroad, or just as a great reference!

The best book for Trans-Siberian travelers.......2004-05-07
I have used this book multiple times while traveling the Trans-Siberian. During my first trip, it helped me to get my bearings and to plan the practicalities. On subsequent trips, I was able to enjoy the detailed maps and information about stops along the way. It is very accurate and detailed. I still found a previous version useful several years after publication. It does focus primarily on stops directly on the route. For those who with to travel further afield, I wrote the book ROAMING RUSSIA: An Adventurer's Guide to Off The Beaten Track Russia and Siberia. The Trans-Siberian Handbook is an essential book for Siberian rail travelers. I highly recommend it.

Alton brings to life the countryside of England with this fun romp. In it we meet Sam, a typical young boy that loves video games and, when dragged on yet another vacation with his parents, wants only to stay in his room and play his video game.
His parents take him to Dorset, England and he finds himself in a bit of trouble - mind you, this is the England with Stonehenge and ancient tales of Druids, witches and evil spirits.
Sam meets Charly, a local girl his age and they promptly - and accidentally - wake up an ancient apprentice to Merlin who is battling an evil force called the Malifex.
And, of course, Sam is chosen to be the "young hero to fight the bad guy."
Sound familiar? Even though this smacks of the young Hogwarts-going wizard, Sam is no Harry. His friendship with Charly doesn't start off well and his reluctance to get involved (and get his nose out of his video game) is only changed when his parents are threatened.
Alton deftly blends English myth and mystical legends into his story, giving this Yank a taste of what it must feel like to cavort around the English countryside battling evil forces with the help of wizards and witches. But the Englishness of this story doesn't overpower the feel - in fact, I didn't even know that Sam was English until a few chapters into the story.
This delightful book is aimed at the tweens but adults can enjoy it as well. Alton is obviously trying to create a series and here's to hoping that it continues at this high level.
