Book Description
The Proceedings of the SOHO-7 Workshop provide an overview of how observations with the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) have led to greater understanding about the nature and evolution of coronal holes and the acceleration of the solar wind. Coronal holes are regions of low density plasma on the Sun that have magnetic fields that expand freely into interplanetary space, and SOHO has allowed solar physicists to investigate the detailed physical processes responsible for maintaining this complex state. The SOHO-7 Workshop Proceedings focus on four topics: (1) constraints by interplanetary and remote-sensing measurements on solar wind models, (2) energy input, heating, and wind acceleration in coronal holes, (3) coronal hole boundaries and adjacent regions, and (4) composition and elemental abundance variations.
This book will be of use to the entire solar community by providing scientists with a concise summary of the progress SOHO has made in this field, and young researchers can use it to learn about the most relevant topics in this rapidly evolving discipline.

The Shaolin Grandmasters' Text is a one-of-a-kind volume discussing the history, philosophy and Gung Fu of Shaolin Ch'an, one of the most misunderstood schools of Ch'an Buddhism. In this revised edition, the Order of Shaolin Ch'an has updated information on their martial and Buddhist legacies in an effort to further preserve the Order's heritage.

Go to CMAO dot com to learn real Shaolin and any other style of martial arts -- avoid imposter teachers!.......2007-08-26
Shaolin kung fu is without question beautiful and if you wish to learn complete kung fu forms for only seven ninety nine per video disc, or slightly more for English-Chinese DVDs, visit the website that begins with the first letters of "Chinese Martial Arts On Disc": CMAOD dot com. "CMAOD dot com" offers every kind of kung fu form and style you would ever wish to learn from beginning to end: traditional hong gar, almost all styles of Shaolin, Dim Mak, traditional hong fist, animal styles, many fighting self-defense videos, wudang, er mei, and dozens of other complete systems of kung fu, including weapons, forms, and self-defense. You name it, you can learn it, without having to spend thousands of dollars to learn from phony kung fu teachers. Many Americans don't know that this website allows you to buy the best instructional VCDs and DVDs available. Visit the "wushu for youth" section of CMAOD dot com and you can buy the wushu fundamentals VCDs or DVDs that will teach you from the beginning stages. Visit the Shaolin section and you will find more fundamental Shaolin VCds or DVDs taught by two allegedly real Shaolin monks called Shi De Juan and Shi De Jian. I don't know how real their monkhood is, but they are gifted martial artists, and you can learn complete forms in many styles of martial arts. You've got to see this website to believe it. The owner Bill is a great guy, and offers great discounts on his website. You've got to visit CMAOD dot com to believe it. There are literally thousands of kung fu artists here that are "at least" as good as the so-called real Shaolin monks in China and America, and many are far far better. With a few bucks, they can be your teacher. If you can't find a good teacher in person, here's your only chance to learn real Shaolin or other styles for almost nothing. Ever wish you could find "the secret kung fu manual" to teach you various styles? Well, here it is in video disc or DVD form. Buy these VCDs or DVDs and enjoy learning great martial arts from top Chinese masters without worrying about being fooled by phony kung fu masters. Finally, every American has access to real kung fu learning at his or her own pace! I have written three international cover stories for Inside Kung Fu and Wushu Kung Fu magazines (now Kung Fu magazine) and can vouch that CMAOD dot com is the best source for learning authentic Shaolin and other kung fu step-by-step without being bamboozled by and kowtowing to phony practitioners of fake kung fu styles or schools. Learn at your own pace, according to your own interests from the best Chinese masters and grandmasters for less than eight dollars for VCDs.
Very informative and thorough.......2007-07-24
The Shaolin Grandmaster's Text was a very pleasant and easy read. I found it to be written from a nonjudgmental viewpoint and the information was very organized and relevant. I appreciated the way in which Chan Buddhism was presented. I found myself, as a Christian, having little , if any, trouble accepting their philosophy. There were so many similarities I sometimes thought they were quoting from the Bible. It really helped me increase my level of compassion and peace. As a Praying Mantis kung fu stylist and American karate black belt, I found the presentation of Shaolin martial arts to be highly informative and accurate. I strongly suggest any martial artist, kung fu or karate, purchase this book, not only for its technique and exercise instruction, but also for its help in making us more responsible as we gain martial skills. I am a better martial artist, and person, for having read this book recommended to me by my Praying Mantis instructor Chuck Shultz.
Shaolin is not ONLY in your heart. There are differences..........2007-02-26
I have studied many types of "Shaolin Kung Fu" - and let's get one thing clear from the beginning: There are many, many incorrect views out there about what "Shaolin" really means. This book, in my experienced and educated opinion comes the closest to a genuinely authentic version of "Shaolin."
After studying for over a year under the current Temple's "official" US representative monk in Flushing, NYC, I learned only one martial move. That monk is himself an accomplished iron-body master. Yet he did not do any iron body training during my stay. (Nor did his most senior students - it was ALL modern wushu for us). Nor was there any type of meditation practice. There was a strong sense of community, which was appealing.
I moved on to study Jin-Woo, which incorporated many authentic Shaolin forms before Mao took over China. Unfortunately, many Jin-Woo schools are continuing this impulse, and are "incorporating" modern wushu as well, to the point where many no longer teach any authentic, traditional Kung-Fu. I am much happier knowing three authentic Shaolin forms, instead of knowing 20 modern wushu forms that are Shaolin in name-only.
Where is Shaolin? Well, we all romanticize the "warrior-monks" of legend. But adhering to the philosophy of Shaolin requires taking the Bodhisattva vow, abiding by the rules of a monastery, and practicing Kung-Fu as an augmentation to sitting meditation. The closest thing that comes to Shaolin, nowadays, is Integral Institute's "Integral Life Practice".
I have only two small problems with this book:
1) It is not nearly polemical enough in deriding the ridiculous charlatans that perform flashy wushu with bald heads and saffron robes. The Chinese government oppresses Tibetan Buddhism and regularly engages in human rights violations against peaceful Falun Gong public-meditators, but "Shaolin" flourishes in mainland China?? WAKE UP PEOPLE....
2) The emphasis on differentiated "animal styles." Animal-specific forms are a product of importing forms into the West. Chinese history and culture has always been one that revealed a group-mind where things merged together. The Western mind finds the one-animal to one-form ratio appealing. In traditional Kung-Fu forms (with the exception of Southern and Hun-Gar), each form had many "fists" embedded within it.
Some "Shaolin Monks" that teach in the US will make you a "monk" with no Bodhisattva vow, no reading of sutras, and no true practice other than your continued monthly wushu training fees. This is not the "way of no way" that Zen speaks to so well, and which many have attempted to invoke in defense of this unconscienable and false practice. Make no mistake about it - any authentically spiritual practice that incorporates Kung-Fu will require "Hard Work" as much as it requires actual vows and spiritual practices such as sitting meditation.
So sure, Shaolin can be in your heart. But your heart is not truly OF Shaolin unless you use the sword of Manjusri to cleave your implusive and ego driven romanticism away from your real practice. (Your "real practice" = transcending ego). For all of its necessarily limited oral history (there were, after all, a great many monks), this book goes a long way in balancing the many ignorant and authentic voices in this underground debate about the true soul of Shaolin.
Hard to imagine a better source for understanding Shaolin.......2007-02-02
I've been studying Buddhism and practicing Kung Fu for over 10 years, and this book is the best source I've found on the history and philosophy of the Shaolin order. Some readers may be made skeptical by the anonymity of the authors, or may naively think that the "real" Shaolin monks must be in China. However, the reasons stated by the authors for fleeing China jibe well with historical fact, and the their views on the essence of Buddism vs. the practices of the various sects are right on target.
(Recommended reading: "The Buddha Speaks" + anything by the Dalai Lama) The authors are also very modest and realistic with respect to the certainty of the claims in this book. The more I read, the more I become convinced that the authors of this book are the real deal.
I have the utmost respect for the Kung Fu of the Shaolin monks on tour with "Wheel of Life". In fact I own a copy of the DVD. Their Kung Fu skills are nothing short of inspiring. However, anyone who understands Buddhism would realize that touring the world to attain honor for one's self or one's country is a contradiction to the basic goal of any Buddhist: abandonment of the ego. This is not to say that the monks in China are not true Shaolin at heart, but only that they have compromized on some aspects of the Shaolin way for (probably pragmatic) reasons that those outside the temple could only speculate about.
My advice: Be equally skeptical of all sources, READ THIS BOOK, and then decide for yourself.
Excellent Authentic Treaties on Shaolin - Philosopy, History and Overview type Information on Kung Fu (Gung Fu).......2006-09-14
As you may be knowing, Shaolin temples have been the source and fountain heads of the martial art of Kung Fu (Gung Fu) for centuries.
This is an authentic treaties and a high quality literary work of the ORIGINAL Shaolin Order. It has taken a many decades to write and present this book to the world. A unique and unprecedented event in the history of the original Shaolin till date. The book describes what Shaolin is all about in details. It refers to Shaolin history from the ancient times till date, explains basic philosopy and gives overall picture of Shaolin way of thinking and Shaolin way of life. The book gives a general information on Shaolin Kung Fu - a sort of overview of Kung Fu and what it really means and how it has developed and evolved.
The book clearly states why almost all the original and authentic Shaolin Masters and Grand Masters fled war torn communist China to settle in U.S.A. The war torn China at the beginning of the last century was way too hostile for sustaining traditional Shaolin styles and values.
The book clearly explains why TODAY Shaolin temples of China have got fake Kung Fu instructors implanted and supported by the present Communist government to deceive foreign tourists into believing that these clowns or dancers are knowledgeable about Shaolin Kung Fu. It also explains that these representatives of government of China are put there to promote tourism and for other reasons but they know nothing from Original Shaoling Knowledge Bank. Today, what they teach at temples in China has absolutely nothig to do with the original and traditional Shaolin Kung Fu since all the authentic Shaolin Masters and Grand Masters have fled from China decades ago due to hostilities of Communists and the Communist Government. What is being practiced TODAY at temples in China is fake and they do it for money ! Those clowns are imposters !
The book explains various styles of Kung Fu (Gung Fu).
Explains philosopy and purpose of Kung Fu, various ranking etc.
It has got a brief write up on almost every style of Shaolin Kung Fu (Gung Fu). Good pictures (diagrams) are given in the book to illustrate some of the concepts. It is a well written book in good English. The book is comprehensive for its subject and the presentation of the articles is excellent.
It is a good resouce book on original Shaolin in general and Shaolin Kung Fu (Gung Fu) in particular. It is a good resouce book for anyone interested in the original Shaolin Kung Fu which has evolved for more than 1400 years. It is a good resource book for those who want to know about Shaolin or Gung Fu. It is a good resource for any serious Martial Artist. It is a good resource for anyone who wants to know about Shaolin and Kung Fu (Gung Fu).

Customer Reviews:
An excellent masterpiece, like most Lonely Planet guidebooks.......2002-01-24
Lile most Lonely Planet guidebooks, this travel guide won't come as a disappointment to any of its readers. The unmistakable excellent standards we can expect from LP, combined with the fact that this particular guidebook is in its 8th edition already, makes of this book a masterpiece no traveller to the region should leave behind. The information about hotels and restaurants, things to see and do, etc, is dense, well-written, excellently ordered, and up-to-date. Likewise, the maps, the various tips on do's and dont's, are invaluable. As always, the sections on history, politics, culture etc, are excellently written and well condensed, ensuring pleasant reading for the traveller and the prospective traveller alike. Without exaggerating nor diminishing the fascination of this wonderful part of the world, this guidebook does great service to Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. It is the ultimate travel tool for those intending to visit these countries, enabling them to make the most out of their stay, as well as ensuring moments of fascinating reading.
Not too impressive.......2001-10-24
First, if you're going to rely on this guide, spend some cash on a couple of decent maps, especially for Kuala Lumpur. This guide has by far some of the most off-the-mark maps I've ever experienced with Lonely Planet. DO NOT rely on the book! As well, some amazing hotels are missing, and they're literally next door to some pretty grotty places the authors here rave about.
Also, I found the author's attitude to Singapore to be rather tiresome. Much is made of the fact that the city-state is cleaner than other congested and polluted cities in South East Asia, and that 'color' has been wiped out of Singapore.
But it seemed to me that authors had an underlying motive when writing about Singapore, to slyly convince travellers from visiting the place, or at least, from staying too long.
Of course, Singapore's not a place where anyone stays on for more than a week. But the author's mightier-than-thou point of view (that only cities with disgusting toilets, $5 hotel rooms and edgey red light districts are worth visiting) was annoying. Also, it was continually noted that Singapore is a "repressive" country. I think one only has to travel to countries like China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and even Morocco before they can whine about Singapore being repressive.
But I digress.
Finally, precious space is wasted in the guide with the inclusion of Brunei. I think LP should give Brunei it's own slim little guide (look at Maldives or Bhutan if you want to see tiny countries with their own books). First, Brunei is culturally and politically different from Malaysia to warrant its own book.
And it would give the Malaysia authors precious space in which to include some decent maps.
Yes, I'm griping here, but when you bring a guide for a longish trip, you tend to notice these things!
Anyway, you could do worse... but Lonely Planet could have done better.
IT IS A BIBLE.......2001-08-22
We ended up calling it "the Bible". Why? Because all the answers are in it.!! Several times we said to our selves that this information should have been in LP. And looking one more time - it was usually there. LP helps you plan and avoid vasting time. Of course you shold try to do things which is not mentioned in LP but this can be a major challanges. The guide goes every where and the information is incredibly reliable. So if you go - bring LP or bring no guide book at all - alternatives are poor sustitutions. We also brought a Footprint - but the reality is that nobody is above or besides LP. 22-08-2001
As always... a necessity.......2001-02-27
Singapore is one of these places where you can travel very well without your Lonley Planet ( in particular if you remember the old subtitle of the series, a survival kit for travellers). Everything is so well organised in this beautiful city that you can get around very easily yourself. Every hotel has a good travel desk and the rooms generally carry maps and brochures of everything that there is to do.
Nevertheless, like on most of my trips I found the investment of a couple of dollars (compared to the total invetsment of the trip absolutely nothing) well worth the money. The guide gives a very simple help in a couple of areas. The "How to get there"for all the sites makes life simpler; you know which bus to take and which Underground station to leave for all the major sites. The info on the parks is accurate and little tips like "do not leave the Night Safari after 23.00 otherwise you will not catch the latest train at Ang Mo Kio really help to plan a trip; at least you know in advance that staying later means queing up for a taxi ( and paying a hefty fare).
It's a comfortably thin guide so you can take it with you whilst travelling around. As usual the info on restaurants is good and leads you to interesting places.
The only caveat, like with most travel guides for this part of the world, is the details on prices. In particular the price info on hotels hass little value since they give the rack rates and these days with a simple Internet search you are able to get big discounts as you can by booking through travel agents.
In a lot of Asian countries you need to have a Lonely Planet for travelling; in Singapore it is a (very) nice to have and a necessity for a lazy one like me.
for "alternatives" only??.......1999-04-14
This guide gives a lot of useful information about places to stay/eat.. for all kinds of budgets. However, it seems that sometimes it's more for the alternative backpack-traveller. As a "normal" beach tourist I didn't get a lot of information out of this and found some descriptions about "tourist-loaded", "standard" places much more negative than they were in reality! Don't let the authors' apparent dislike for these kinds of tourist discourage you.

accommodation in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia.......1997-08-20
On compairing 2 previous publications on the same book titles by Lonely Planet, I found that the book keep repeating itself, especially for accommodation in Sandakan. The difference of around 10 years had changed a lot in Sandakan, where new types of accommodations are available, especially around the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Sepilok. It was quite frustrating not to find A SINGLE, repeat, NOT A SINGLE, indication in the 3 related books concerning accommodation options around that area, where at least 3 outlets have been in existence for more than 5 years already!!!????
For your information, I am not a Traveller to that part of the world, but a proud and responsible citizen of Malaysia staying in Sandakan and I was quite ashamed to be asked by quite a few of Oversea Travellers visiting Sandakan, about whether they can stay around the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre (about 16 miles from the town centre) so that they can spend more time to visit the Orangutan. Only when they showed me the books that they are travelling with, which they told me,are very good, that I found out that none of the accommodation outlets for backpacker were stated in the books.
To make matters worst, I have been asked by a few tourists where is Sandakan B & B just a few days ago. I asked him where he come to know about Sandakan B&B and the answers were the Lonely Planet Books that they are carrying. I cordially informed them that the books that they are carrying were only about 8 to 9 years out of date!
It makes me wonder whether Lonely Planet just print and reprint their books just for the sack of
business and not the intention of correctly informing the POOR TRAVELLERS (at their mercy, of course!)what they are supposed to get, if not 100 %, but at least the closest they can get,at the destinations concerned. What excuses does Lonely Planet has for not updating their books? Even if you are talking about 8 to 9 years lapse? I really felt sorry for those tourist who have to waste so much time finding out and not to mention the financial loses due to transportation up and down the Centre.
When I accidently met up with a few of the tourists who I directed (I gave them a lift in my car) them to Sepilok B & B ( a very good backpackers' outlet near the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre ), they thank me for my help and commented that only IF Lonely Planet had informed them about such outlet, they wouldn't have to waste so much time and money to find out the hard way, where the stay there was cheap, clean and the people are friendly.
Also for your information, your website address have been given to me by one of the tourists who happens to know about you. I strongly felt that it is the responsibility of a book publisher to better inform the readers correctly and only by proper updating that readers would appreciate their efficiency and professional altitudes!
Thank you

Seventeen-year-old Seattle native Cosmos DeHaag's life of petty crime has finally caught up with him. As punishment for his small-time offenses, Cosmos is sentenced to a school year on his uncle's farm in Iowa. There, he determines that his true trickster personality, Cosmos Coyote, will have to hide behind the mask of his well-behaved alter ego, William the Nice. But no one is more surprised than Cosmos when he ends up falling for the most devout Christian girl in town, Cherlyn Van Dyke, and she for him. These two navigate the rough waters of sexual temptation and disapproving parents in an amusing and poignant journey that will try both the faith and the funny bones of teen readers.
Although author Jim Heynan's rendition of teen-speak is a bit unrealistic (lovesick Cosmos utters phrases like "There's more sparkle in your smile than in the stars. There's more light in your eyes than the moon"), the discussions between Cosmos and Cherlyn about religion are thought-provoking. Many teens will find their own musings about God echoed in the voices of these characters, even if those voices aren't quite right. What is right are Heynan's settings. He evokes the Iowa cattle fields with descriptions that are lovingly crafted and often hilarious. His take on the scent of cow manure is typical: "If there is an aphrodisiac, this smell must be the anti-aphrodisiac. Iowa birth control." Cosmos Coyote compares favorably with Randy Powell's Tribute to Another Dead Rock Star, which also deals with a Seattle teen's spiritual struggle. (Ages 13 to 17) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
In this truly modern teenage love story, spirituality and sensuality burn equally bright.
"I have these two characters I hide behind. The real one is Cosmos Coyote and the phony one is William the Nice. But sometimes I get them mixed up, like now and almost all the time when I'm with you."
Cosmos DeHaag is a fast-thinking, law-bending, teenage songwriter from Seattle. In trouble with the law, he is sent to live with his conservative Christian relatives in Iowa and he splits his personality in two: William the Nice will play along, while Cosmos Coyote stays true. When he meets Cherlyn, a beautiful charismatic Christian, their passion takes them both by surprise and the lines between truth and falsehood, Cosmos and William, begin to blur. Now even Cosmos himself is unsure: is he being true when he lies, or lying when he's being true?
Jim Heynen explores teenage passion and spiritual yearning in a book for older teens that breaks boundaries and will entrance readers.
Customer Reviews:
Heynen branches out.......2002-04-17
Heynen is a serious writer and most of his work has been in poetry and short fiction, however, I've enjoyed his recent forays into young adult literature, including this book and "Being Youngest." "Cosmos Coyote" didn't start out on the highest note. Some of the dialogue in the first chapter left me cringing, but the story improved quickly. I appreciated Heynen's three-dimensional characters- his bad boy isn't all bad, and his good girl isn't all good. That and the honest, serious issues of religion were the strongest points of this book. William/Cosmos has a strong, humorous voice that keeps the story rolling even when the philosophy gets heavy. I recommend this, as well as Heynen's other works.
Excellent supporting characters and strong relationships.......2001-06-24
After one too many run-ins with the police on minor charges, 17-year old Cosmos Coyote, the recently dumped pot-smoking lead singer of a garage band the OughtaB's, elects to spend a year in the Bible Belt with his religious Dutch farmer relatives rather than go to juvenile hall in Seattle. As he acclimates to the odor of manure that perfumes Iowa, Cosmos finds many hypocrital Christians at the private school he attends, and doesn't think he'll ever fit in; he himself feels like a phony as he presents his well-behaved alter-ego William the Nice to the community that refuses to accept him.
This witty and humorous novel is ultimately an honest look at teen relationships that tries to figure out where God fits in with raging hormones. When Cosmos falls for the most religious and wholesome girl in the school, her father forbids her to see him. Cherlyn is almost the only person he can be himself around. Although she promises not to try to convert him, they have many intense and thought provoking discussions about religion, and fall in love and have a mature and respectful balanced relationship. It is a nice change to find a book that raises issues of faith in a non-proselytizing manner.
The support that Heynen creates for his protagonist is stellar. The people who advocate for and believe in Cosmos continually surprise him, especially when he constantly framed for several small thefts. It is heartwarming to see adults portrayed positively, and to be reminded that teens need adult role models, mentors and advocates.
Heynen has a lot of fun with words in this book. As a songwriter, Cosmos struggles with lyrics while his friend Elmer spouts out funky and rhythmic word combinations like some sort of beat poet linguist because talking like a human being is boring.
The cover art is an artful blend of farm and city life that portrays Cosmos' two sides, with his face ironically in focus only on the more rural side. Highly recommended for purchase.
One of the best of its type........2000-05-21
This book was riveting and sweet and powerful, and was about the most memorable of the books I have read with this theme (boy/girl in trouble sent away to "find themselves"). Cosmos/William came to understand a lot about himself without having to lose who he was and what he stood for initially, as did Cherlyn. Both could love each other without giving up self. Refreshing.
