How motivation works.......2004-12-23
"You have the key to motivate yourself and others" the opening of 'The Tao of Motivation' by Max Landsberg. The book is one of three in a series about leadership and management. The others are The Tao of Coaching and The Tools of Leadership.
The book is presented as a guide and uses the story of Alex and his struggle to become a board member to illustrate the theory behind motivation. (Alex is also the name of the manager in The Goal by Eliyahu M. Goldratt, coincidence?)
The book follows the learning process of Alex, the theory builds on previous chapters and the VICTORY-circle (Vision, Impetus, Confidence, Taking the Plunge, Outcomes, Responding to feedback, and of course 'You'). As in all things when working with people, just telling isn't enough: Show, don't tell. In order to be able to motivate others you must first learn how motivation works and how to motivate yourself. A number of subjects around motivation (psychology, NLP, Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator, body-language etc.) are briefly mentioned in the book. A reference list encourages you to further exploring.
I must say the book had an influence on me because I learned some new things about motivation. Because you want to read the life story of Alex you easily pick up the theory in between (don't skip it!). These kind of business novels are a nice way of learning new things.
A useful short guide.......2003-08-06
One of three short books by Landsberg on key skills for leaders and managers. The others are The Tao of Coaching and The Tools of Leadership. All three are notable for their directness and brevity and all provide an extremely useful guide to important skills. Each is written around a brief story about 'Alex', on his journey from manager to CEO, with each episode designed to illustrate some aspect of the coaching/motivation/leadership challenge. Each episode is followed by a two page summary of the particular skill needed to meet the challenge. Each book has a useful bibliography to guide the reader to more detail where desired and a suite of Appendices covering further details on key aspects of skill.
There is naturally some overlap between the books, but each is valuable in its own right and the set combine to provide a thoughtful, practical and readily referenced guide to the key elements in the human side of management and leadership.
The Tao of Motivation is structured around the memnonic VICTORY, standing for Vision, Impetus, Confidence, Taking the Plunge, Outcomes, responding to feedback, and the particular 'You' with whom motivation is concerned. It also introduces aspects of basic psychology and tools such as MBTI and NLP in summary form ,

Book Description
Everybody has the dream: Build a boat in the backyard and sail off to join the happy campers off Pogo Pogo, right? But how? Assuming you aren't independently wealthy, if you want a boat that's really you, you gotta build it yourself.
Backyard boatbuilding has its problems. Building in fiberglass is itchy, smelly, and yields a product that yachting maven L. Francis Herreshoff once called "frozen snot." Ferrocement, once all the rage, has pretty much sunk from favor, if you catch the drift. But there's still wood, right? Ah, wood. Nature's perfect material. You can build in the time-honored traditions of the Golden Age of Yachting, loving crafting intricate joints in rare tropical hardwoods, steaming swamp oak butts to sinuous shapes, holding the whole thing together with nonferrous fastenings that cost a buck or better each. Does that sound like boatbuilding for everyperson?
What about the currently fashionable wood/epoxy boatbuilding? You butter regular old wood with Miracle Whip, stick it together in the shape of a boat, and off you go, right? Epoxy works, but They don't exactly give it away; nor is it exactly a benign substance. Suiting up like Homer Simpson heading for a fun-filled day at the nuclear power plant isn't exactly the aesthetic boatbuilding experience many of us are looking for.
Where does that leave us? In the capable hands of George Buehler, who honors the timeless traditions of the sea all right, but those from the other side of the boatyard tracks. Buehler draws his inspiration from centuries of workboat construction, where semiskilled fishermen built rugged, economical boats from everyday materials in their own backyards, and went to sea in them in all kinds of weather, not just when it was pleasant.
Buehler's boats sail on every ocean and perform every task, from long-term liveaboards in Norwegian fjords to a traveling doctor's office in Alaska. This book contains complete plans for seven cruising boats--from a 28-foot sailboat to a 55-foot power cruiser. All the information you need is here, including step-by-step instructions honed by nearly 20 years of supplying boat plans to backyard builders--and helping them out when they get into trouble.
Buehler is anarchic, heretical, and occasionally profane; his book is West Coast counterculture meets traditional hardchine workboat construction, leavened with hardnosed common sense and penny-pinching economy. This book is for those who look around them and see that much of what is done in the world today--whether in yachting or politics or economics or interpersonal relationships--is based not on logic but on conforming and meeting other people's expectations. This book is most definitely NOT about either. It is about the realization of dreams.
If you believe that everyone who wants a cruising boat can have one . . .
If you see beauty beneath the fish scales and work scars of a commercial fishing boat . . .
If you want to build a simple, rugged, economical, good-looking cruising boat--power or sail--using everyday lumberyard materials and few skills other than perseverance, this is the book for you. Buehler's Backyard Boatbuilding tells you how to build extraordinary boats using the most ordinary skills and materials, with complete plans, instructions, and specifications for seven real cruising boats ranging from a 28-foot sailboat to a 55-foot power cruiser.
"Build wooden boats the Buehler way, which is to say inexpensively, yet like the proverbial brick outhouse."--WoodenBoat
Richly flavored with personal advice and anecdotes as well as a wealth of valuable information."--American Sailing Association
"Everyone will revere this book."--The Ensign
Customer Reviews:
Great book on tight budget, seaworthy wooden boatbuilding.......2007-04-05
First of all, this book is very encouraging. It really makes you believe that you CAN make your own boat with very little bucks and some time. I also bought the author's other book, "The troller Yatch", were he makes clear that te cheapest, meaning less expensive, way of cruising is on a "survivealist type sailboat" as he calls it, so if you want to cruise in the smallest of budgets, this is your book. One thing that you have to have in mind is that since the publishing date, appropiate materials (wood) have become more difficult to find. The only thing I missed on the book is that he included the plans for his "Happy camper of pogo pogo" small sailboat design, or a smaller one as an introductory project. The "if you can build a doghouse, you can build a boat" is very true, so build a doghouse or something else, but work with wood a little bit, beacuse on the book it is assumed that you have basic carpentry skills, and maybe, as I, you don't (you will learn very quickly, so keep going). The smallest sailboat plan included is for a 28' (8.5 m) "Haggar", so take your measuring tape and see if you have enough space first. Anyway, the book makes wooden boatbuilding easy to understand, so after reading half of this book I started a 12' sailboat project that seemed out of my league before reading, again, the first half of this book.
A Fun Read.......2007-02-06
OK! I've been reading boat building books for many many years now and have restored 5 old sailboats myself. This was the best read on this subject I've encountered. Buehler strips away all of the snobish Bull S*** and goes at the discussion from the position that the reason you are reading this book is because you want to SAIL a boat that you can afford and enjoy while still being safe and comfortable.
He is also very funny!!!!!
hardwork?.......2005-09-19
A lot of activities of man are steeped in protocol. Us men tend to add ego to everything. I once had a flying instructor who questioned the 'norm' and rejected the unecessary -flying instantly became easier and enjoyable. When you question this 'unecessary difficulty' the world opens up. George Buehler's book, as well as being humourous and educational, de-programs what you thought you knew about boats and illustrates most people's ability to regurgitate yacht marketing drivel.
I love this guy........2005-05-09
I have to admit, there is something about his garage style in writing, and his easy going manner that appeal to me. I loved this book, and he brings up points that only a person who does this kind of work day in and out can do. It is a really great book. It makes you want to go into the great north west and build yourself a nice sail boat and go to Alaska. Reading this book will make you smell the saw dust and the pine needles of the fresh cool air around you. He inspires and explains at the same time. I read this book twice and enjoyed it. I think that you will too.
Must have book for anyone wanting to build their own boat........2005-02-27
George Buehler dispels the myth that only trained professionals can build a boat. His methods and instructions are based on real world, common-sense techniques that have been used and still are used by people who make their living on the water. His boats are meant to be used and abused and still come out working good and looking good in the end as compared to most production boats today that need a weekend of maintenance for every weekend out on the water. Best of all these are boats that can be built by the backyard boat builder.
In addition to the good information his unique personality and humor make the book very entertaining. He provides many anecdotes relating to things that he or others have tried which have worked, didn't work, or failed spectacularly. These anecdotes though funny at times are the ones that count and should be remembered when building your own boat - sadly stories such as these are few or non existent in books that try to take a more academic approach.

Austria via Lonely Planet.......2007-05-16
Printed in 2005, some of the factual material is out-of-date (e.g., banks that change currency or traveller's checks), but the arrrangement by geographical areas works and the city maps--and the variety of things given on them--are clear and useful, as usual.
Travel Prep.......2006-08-15
A great book in preparation for your trip to Austria. Several smaller, yet interesting, areas are discussed.
Needs more guidance and priortization; also missed info.......2005-06-07
I just returned from a brief trip to Austria. Lonely Planet is a reliable guide, but it has many problems some of which have been discussed already. I agree that it is a bit too oriented towards backpackers, wanderers, and poor students. This is not bad, because some guides such as the Guide Vert don't even acknowledge hostels it seems.
The LP notably missed the number of organized tours that were available, in English, from Salzburg. I was able to go to Berchtesgaden/Eagles Nest on a guided tour. There are also the Ice Caves. These tours significantly reduced my level of effort and organization required.
The other problem is that with few pictures (not a terrible thing given limited space) it is hard to have a good sense of where you want to go and what you should prioritize. For example, how does an Alpine castle in Austria compare to one in Germany or France? "Best in Europe" is a useful description you don't find; "Best in Austria" is not especially useful given that Austria is not the largest country in Europe, and one is more likely than not to be passing through Austria between Italy, Germany, and France rather than spending weeks there.
In the case of Vienna, I found that there were some significant museums and sites that were missing; such as the arsenal or the German flak towers. However, they did have most of the important sites and if you only have a day or two that's fine.
The LP books consistently have more descriptions and destinations for any mainstream books. If you want that "hidden treasure" you need to get a regional/local book, usually in the local language.
Less than Informative.......2005-05-18
I have used Lonely Planet Guides in the past and have been pleased with the information they provided. This iteration, however, leaves much to be desired. I use the guides to point out the "obvious" places that should not be missed, and "secret" places that are off the beaten path that the writers share with their readers. I found this book lacking in both instances. Vacations are never long enough, and as such, they require research and a seasoned guide to separate the worthwhile sights from the rest. After reading this guide, I was not much better off than before I started. Further, I found the guide is written for a backpacker mentality; fine for them, but not for me. Way too much time and space was devoted to finding one's way via public transport, and where to find the next hostel. I am well beyond that. I recently received the latest Fodor's and Frommer guides for Austria, and in one chapter, I was miles ahead with either guide over where LP left me. LP was extremely helpful for my travels to Australia and Belgium. This edition was rather disappointing.
Great Trip.......2005-05-16
As usual Lonely Planet shows the best. I especially liked the KunstHausWien in Vienna!!

Up the Danube without a Paddle.......2005-09-01
I packed two guidebooks for my trip to Vienna: this one, and an ancient Michelin Green Guide to Austria that devoted about 20 pages to Vienna. I found the latter more useful, even though much of the information was frozen in a long-forgotten 1978.
It's difficult to look up specific information in this guide, and, once found, it's sometimes misleading. "The regal rooms of Schloss Schonbrunn are in a league of their own in Vienna - the Kaiser apartments of the Hofburg hardly come close." Perhaps. But the Schonbrunn was so packed with tour groups that I ran through the forty rooms that are open for viewing as quickly as possible just to get out of the place. By contrast, a visit to the Hofburg included a moving exhibit on the wife of the emperor Franz Joseph; for me, this humanized the rooms and added a depth that the mere viewing of endless amounts of gold leaf could not.
The typeface of this book is too small and faint, and the maps are unreadable. A reference for the Albertina is given as `Map pp.240-3.' Turning to page 240, I found tiny dots with tiny numbers going up to 351, but no dot with a 3. After much searching of page 240, I found the 3 on an inset map on page 241. This is inexcusable in a guidebook.
Vienna is too wonderful to entrust to this guide. Friends who carried the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Vienna at least had a book that was readable.
New format messes up a classic.......2004-11-15
I've long been a Lonely Planet fan, never thinking twice about buying the appropriate Lonely Planet book whenever I travel. However, the new format and emphasis of the LP guides has made me re-think my commitment.
Specifically, the "Fact for the Visitor" section has been greatly reduced, and moved under the confusingly titled "Directory" section. Unfortunately, this is difficult to locate because the Table of Contents has been bowdlerized from the former detailed breakdown into a simple section listing. If you want to find a specific piece of information, you now have to guess which section it might be hiding in (as in "Directory" -- which is almost nothing like a directory), then flip the to beginning of that section for the more detailed contents.
The new, less coherent, structure is frustrating enough, but when you get each section, you find it very hard to read. One of the first things that you learn about graphic design and publishing is that sans serif typefaces are difficult to read for long passages and should only be used sparingly. The new guides have turned this on its head, and now very light sans serif faces are used almost everywhere (contrast this with earlier editions where sans serif is only used for headings). I find it difficult to read for more than a few paragraphs, which is very annoying.
Being able to locate, and read the information are the two most fundamental things a guidebook needs to have, and these new editions really fail.
Which raises the biggest problem of all -- LP seems to be changing its emphasis from a guide which provided lots of useful information to the budget traveler as well as the higher end independent traveler. The new guide really de-emphasizes the budget traveler, in favor of being a generic, middle of the road guide. Which, from someone who looks to get the most from his travel dollar, is extremely disappointing. In contrast with my second edition copy of this guide, the fourth edition lists half as many budget accommodations, and twice as many mid-range to expensive ones.
On the plus side, the maps *finally* include a grid, making it much easier to find locations on them.
On the whole though, LP has taken the guides I've loved for years, and made them much less valuable to me. In the future, I'll be shopping around for guides, instead of knowing that I can trust LP without a second thought.
Incredibly helpful.......2002-01-06
The fancy of going to Vienna next summer crossed my mind more than once so I decided to pick this up just to get some more information on the City of Music. It's a very concise book that can be easily toted around in a bag or pocket, which I immediately liked because should I go I would want to keep it on hand. I liked the layout for places to stay, going from campgrounds to hostels, to the hotels, going from one star to five. It has a great listing for restaurants and has the city pretty much covered in respects to places to visit and a calendar of events, which makes planning a trip a lot easier. The history was a nice added bonus for someone not knowing about the city, as well as historical people that spent time/grew up in Vienna (ie: Mozart). Colour photos and things such as political mindset, attitude towards children, the legal system are nice touches as well. However, take the prices with a grain of salt, especially with the new introduction of the Euro.
A handy guide to more than just the tourist sites.......2000-06-13
The 2nd edition of Lonely Planet's guide to Vienna is a welcome edition to the guidebooks on the Austrian capital. Of course it contains the usual information: how to get there, how to get around, and what there is to see. But this book also tells the reader about other important facts such as the climate, history, government/politics, bicycling, and farily current email and web addresses. The Lonely Planet guide also has lots of interesting tidbits of information that most of the more staid guides do not, such as info on Lauda Air, gay Vienna, The Third Man (movie), and Viennese actionism. The maps are excellent, and prices (as of 1998) are listed for most attractions. I doubt that a more versatile guide exists.

Inspired by the crabby niece of award-winning Irish author and illustrator Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick, Silly Mommy, Silly Daddy is an easy reader picturebook that tells its charming story through the simplistic color illustrations as strongly as with words. Little Beth is in a sour mood and won't smile for anyone; her family tries to lift her spirits, but they're all just acting silly. Only Beth's clever big sister knows just the right remedy to turn Beth's frown upside-down! A delightfully funny storybook meant to be shared with the very young.

Book Description
1998 Xeric award winning graphic novel. In the future, people will be physically tagged, like cattle, using bar code tattoos. That is the premise of this sci-fi epic, set in a strange new America that has been bled dry by the corporate-government partnership. As spaceships cruise past, Silly Daddy and his teenage daughter take an old-fashioned road trip across the country. The year is 2014. Have a Virtual Reality Happy Meal. Ride a space-age gesso glider. Stay away from hi-tech cops and psycho teenage chicks. Rediscover the long lost love of your life, and try to survive that one big death in the family, if you can.

Surrealism, before it was associated with melting clocks and absurdist imagery, was an attempt to explore the subconscious in art. In Silly Daddy: The Long Goodbye Joe Chiappetta combines this exploration of the subconscious with the primitive sensibilities of an outsider artist. At times the black-and-white artwork looks like the drawings of a child. Throughout the book the art develops, though, and is slightly refined; by the end it appears more comfortable, especially when juxtaposed with the drawings of Chiappetta's 3-year-old daughter. The Long Goodbye is an autobiographical collection of important (if sometimes banal) accounts of young, inexperienced parenthood, the disintegration of Chiappetta's marriage, and his ever-deepening love and appreciation for his daughter. This comic book is spiritual in the most unpretentious way: truisms are never preached or presented as such, but through his stories, through the thoughts he shares with the reader, Chiappetta creates a sense of pathos, hope, and bittersweet love.
