Book Description
Real-time systems and networks are of increasing importance in many applications, including automated factories, telecommunication systems, defense systems, and space systems. This book introduces the concepts and state-of-the-art research developments of resource management in real-time systems and networks. Unlike other texts in the field, it covers the entire spectrum of issues in resource management, including task scheduling in uniprocessor real-time systems; task scheduling, fault-tolerant task scheduling, and resource reclaiming in multiprocessor real-time systems; conventional task scheduling and object-based task scheduling in distributed real-time systems; message scheduling; QoS routing; dependable communication; multicast communication; and medium access protocols in real-time networks. It provides algorithmic treatments for all of the issues addressed, highlighting the intuition behind each algorithm and giving examples. The book also includes two chapters of case studies.
Customer Reviews:
Too dry to read.......2007-09-06
This book is more of a manual than the traditional concept of a book. No real life examples of the subject discussed. No easy or hard exercises to enforce the material the student went over.
All you see is a collection of abstract concepts to a subject that can be very interesting. This is definitely not worth the amount of money I spent.
Valuable resource.......2002-10-01
I read this book and using it in one of my courses. This book covers almost all aspects of resource management in networks and real-time systems. I feel it is a wonderful resouce for people working in this area.
Diverse rather than comprehensive.......2001-08-12
When you start reading, you will find the authors have used too much space in this book to introduce the papers they published. They describe their own papers in such details such that even performance evaluations are included! On the other hand, the architecture of the book is rather incomplete possibly because the author want to cover too many areas: multiprocessor, distributed system (including Object-Oriented) and networking. The content in each part is not comprehensive enough, either. The works of other peoples are not presented in detail or analyzed.
However, to be fair, this book does address some issues not present in other books, including objected-oriented distributed systems, detailed scheduling in real-time communications and two case studies, which I like.
An excellent book that covers all about RT Systems and N/Ws.......2001-08-11
The book covers an amazing amount of literature right from task scheduling, resource management to real-time communication.
Its introduction to Real-Time Computing itself speaks for it, giving an overall view of a real-time system and clarifies the common misconceptions about real-time systems.
The book is clearly divided into two subdivisions: one covering the resource management in real-time systems (covering process scheduling, resource reclaiming, object-based RT systems) and the other section covering resource management in real-time networks. The depth of information covered in Real-Time Networks can be rarely found in anyother Real-Time book.
The book covers all the relevant literature in the respective fields (from basic to the recent publications), thus can serve as a great reference book for Real-Time Systems.
If you're a beginner in Real-Time Systems, it is a great book to start with, if you're an expert it can be a great reference tool.
As a student doing research in Real-Time Systems, I recommend this book for everyone interested in learning Real-Time Systems.
Excellent compilation of issues and solutions in RT Systems.......2001-05-04
This book is an excellent compilation of important issues and solutions in real-time systems.
The book covers topics starting from processor scheduling to real-time communications. It covers a wide spectrum with computing on one end to communication on the other. This book is a "must-have" for any student/engineer working in the area of real-time systems.
The book would also be an excellent choice for a graduate course in real-time systems.

Book Description
Introgression is the incorporation of a gene from one organism complex into another as a result of hybridization. A major concern of the use of genetically modified plants is the unintentional spread of the new genes from cultivated plants to their wild relatives and the subsequent impacts on the ecology of wild plants and their associated flora and fauna. This book reviews these issues, focusing on the ecological and evolutionary effects of introducing GM cultivars. It presents current knowledge of crop-wild relatives hybridization and introgression, and the measurement and prediction of their consequences. As a result it represents a major contribution to the debate about the risks of GM crops and measures, such as post commercialisation monitoring, required to determine the longer term impacts of GM crops on ecosystems.

Book Description
This volume of proceedings contains research and review papers concerning the dynamics of asteroids and comets and especially their interactions with the Earth as signified by geological and historical records. Remembering what may have happened to the dinosaurs, but being careful to avoid creating irrational scares, the papers attempt to improve our knowledge of dynamics of the small objects of the Solar System and to assess in particular their effects on the Earth environment and the evolution of life.
This book will be an up-to-date source of information to astronomers and dynamicists interested in the dynamics of small bodies of the Solar system, as well as to geologists and paleobiologists interested in the effects on the Earth of extraterrestrial bombardment by asteroids and comets.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book........2007-04-23
I purchased the book "Rocks From Space (Second Edition)" about seven years ago. My main interest in space is in the field of planetary geology and I have a need to be reasonably conversant with the subscience of meteoritics. The "Rocks From Space" book was recommended by several colleagues, and I also noted that it had received good reviews.
In general, I find "popular" books directed to the interests of amateurs to be shallow and even corny. "Rocks From Space" is an exception. This book is outstanding. It provides a concise but excellent introduction to the subjects of meteorites, asteroids, comets, meteors and impact sites. It is presented in a way that amateur collectors, amateur astronomers or anyone interested in these space-related subjects can easily read and understand, but, at the same time, it is very informative and authoritative. I would not hesitate to recommend the book to anyone who was interested in meteorites and other space debris. In fact, I have recommended it to countless individuals as an excellent place to start.
"Rocks From Space" is well written, well illustrated and interesting to read. It has achieved a permanent and respected place in my reference book collection. I give talks on planetary geology to groups of geologists and astronomers and I use some of the illustrations in my presentations. For people who are interested is collecting meteorites, Norton presents a series of guidelines, anecdotes and useful information including a list of laboratories where one might get an identification confirmed. For a small and inexpensive paperback, this book contains a wealth of information.
Rocks from Space, an overview........2007-02-09
Excellent book, especially for the beginning/intermediate meteorite collecter. Written in easy-to-understand English, yet technical when it needs to be. Very comprehensive on the subject, and well illustrated with photographs and drawings.
VERY ENTERTAINING BOOK ON METEORITES!!.......2007-01-11
Norton is a rare author who combines detailed knowledge of a subject with very entertaining stories. Once I started reading some of the chapters I just could not put it down. On the other hand, it also includes chapters which are technical (and sometimes beyond my understanding in some cases)! It therefore has something for everyone from beginner to advanced, collector or even a noncollector simply interested in the subject. This is a great introduction and very well written. It was not the first book on metorites I read, but should have been!
Rocks from Space.......2006-08-24
very informative and well written. a good book to have on the subject.
A joy for every meteorite collector.......2005-09-20
Though I got Norton's Encyclopedia of Meteorites first, I'm glad I still bought this one as it is more beginner friendly, and delights every reader of the meteorite legends and bed time stories.I use to have this principle not to buy the second book of the same author, as the content is almost the same. The encyclopedia is still an excellent reference for the more technically inclined individuals, I should say for geologist its easy for them to see eye to eye, but "Rocks from Space" has always been recommended by almost every meteorite dealer and collectors, and they can't be wrong. Its a must for every collector in their library. Mr. Norton has always been close to many a meteorite collector, and the reader can share his views without boundaries.

Customer Reviews:
A good introductory text........2006-10-10
As the title indicates, the Elkins-Tanton monograph is an introductory text on asteroids, comets and meteorites. The text also includes discussions of moons, planetary impacts and space mission to investigate comets and asteroids. The seven chapters and three appendices are illuminated with detailed gray-scale graphics and diagrams as well as high-resolution black and white photos of moons, comets and other celestial bodies. These are augmented by eight pages of good quality color images in the center of the book. Scientific and astronomical facts and data are presented in clearly readable tabular format throughout the text. While some mathematical concepts and formulas are presented in context, this book is not a text on celestial mechanics. The text incorporates a number of valuable features including an extensive index, bibliography, glossary, a list of Internet resources and astronomical societies.
As a course text, this book would be appropriate for 6th grade through high school and could be used as a supplementary text for undergraduate university courses. While advanced mathematics are not required to understand the content, the reader's comprehension will be enhanced with a basic knowledge of algebra. Replete with interesting facts and data, the book is easy to read not requiring background knowledge of astronomy or physics. The lack of advanced organizers and end-of-chapters activities or resources diminishes the functionality of this book as a primary course text.

Book Description
The threespine stickleback is a small fish of temperate coastal and fresh waters that exhibits extraordinary phenotypic diversity. Benefiting from its amenability to observation in the field and manipulation in the laboratory, Niko Tinbergen pioneered the threespine stickleback's use in behavioral studies and established it as a model system in ethology. This up-to-date volume incorporates reviews from active researchers who use studies of the fish to address a broad variety of evolutionary issues, including optimal foraging, armor variation, speciation, and the endocrine basis for correlated behavioral characters. The work demonstrates the value of viewing the biology of a single organism simultaneously from multiple perspectives. Students and researchers in ecology, evolution, animal behavior, and vertebrate zoology will find much of interest in this useful book.

The voices of the game's distant past continue to reverberate with a distinct freshness in Lawrence S. Ritter's The Glory of Their Times. An oral history of the game in the first two decades of the century, Glory sends out its impressive roster of players to tell their own stories, and what stories they tell--the story of their times as well as of their game; the scorecard includes Rube Marquard, Babe Herman, Stan Coveleski, Smoky Joe Wood, and Wahoo Sam Crawford. A delight from cover to cover, Glory is the next best thing to having been there in the days when the ball may have been dead, but the personalities were anything but.

The Story of the
Early Days of Baseball
Told by the Men Who
Played It
Customer Reviews:
Baseball's Old Testament.......2007-05-27
Statistically, baseball back then couldn't be more at variance with the game now. Cy Young threw 511 career victories, and 750 complete games. In 1909, Ty Cobb led the majors both in batting average (.377) and home runs (9). Cobb's teammate Sam Crawford hit over 300 triples in his career.
What to make of such numbers? Lawrence S. Ritter's "The Glory Of Their Times" strips away the statistical confusion by getting to the heart of Major League Baseball's early days, the players themselves. An economics professor, Ritter invested his downtime from 1962-66 in interviewing elderly men, baseball players all who knew what it was like to face a Walter Johnson fastball, or have Ty Cobb slide into the base they were covering.
"People were more unique then, more unusual, more different from each other," says Davy Jones, who played on the Tigers with Cobb and Crawford. "Now people are all more or less alike, company men, security minded, conformity - that sort of stuff. In everything, not just baseball."
Transcriptions of Ritter's interviews with Jones and 21 other former players, including Crawford and two others then in the Hall of Fame, makes up the whole of "The Glory Of Their Times," published in 1966 and later extended with four more interviews in 1984. Nearly all the interviews offer both testimony and color for the game as it was then.
Bill Wambsganss tells us about his unassisted triple play in the 1920 World Series, and how Ring Lardner once used his last name to rhyme with "clam's chance" and "Ray Chapman's pants". Fred Snodgrass tells us about his famous muffed fly in the 1911 World Series, and how his New York Giants tried to psyche out the Philadelphia Athletics by sitting on the dugout bench, ostentatiously sharpening their spikes.
You hear so much about another famous World Series moment, the Merkle "boner" of 1908, that you feel like you were there on the field, too. There's a Rashomon-like quality to hearing various interviewees give their different takes on such things as the character of John McGraw and whether "Giant Killer" Harry Coveleski was run out of the league when he was caught chewing on bologna. (Snodgrass says so, while Harry's brother Stanley, a major-league pitcher himself, calls it "a lot of bull".
Not all the interviews are riveting. One wishes Ritter could have pushed some of the old players more, like the rumors that swirled around Smoky Joe Wood involving fixes. But allowing the subjects the reins probably drew more color out of them than a Grand Jury could have. I love how Crawford keeps telling Ritter he hasn't much time to talk, while giving Ritter one of the longest and most entertaining interviews in the book, describing how players would allow themselves to be rubbed down with "Go Fast," a noxious combination of Vaseline and Tabasco sauce that made them sweat like a sauna.
"I hope I haven't said anything I shouldn't," Crawford says at the end. "There are a lot of the old-timers still left, you know, and they're liable to say, 'That fathead, who the hell does he think he is, anyway, popping off like that!'"
If you like baseball even a little, you will enjoy "The Glory Of Their Times" quite a lot.
glory of their times.......2007-05-19
If you love the game of baseball as it once was and still should be this is a "must read"...some of the players interviewed by Ritter were unknown to me and I was fascinated to learn of their exploits...I ordered an additional three books and sent them to long time fans of the game...If I was a GM today in MLB I would have every member of the team read this book so that they might appreciate the game as it was in its infancy...the modern player (in most cases)doesn't realize how fortunate he is to wear a major league uniform and earn the money today for playing a "game"
Superb Baseball History.......2007-05-05
This superb oral history of baseball circa 1900-1920's contains many priceless tales. After Ty Cobb died in 1961 author Lawrence Ritter (1922-2004) took his tape recorder and traveled the USA to interview 22 surviving players from that remarkable era. We hear from top stars and established players, including Ed Roush, Sam Crawford, Smokey Joe Wood, Chief Meyers, Sam Jones, Bill Wambsganss, etc. Each player reminisces in his own way, recounting games, teammates, owners, managers, crowds, ballparks, etc. Some talk at length while others are briefer, but each is articulate and illuminating. I particularly liked Rube Marquard's memory of visiting the Chicago firehouse where he'd once slept as a transient, Stan Coveleski's view that baseball kept him from the coal mines, and the remembrances of Davy Jones and Jimmy Austin. It was also interesting to see how these players viewed superstars Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, Ty Cobb, and Babe Ruth. This book provides readers with a superb sense of baseball before night games, air travel, TV, radio (except after 1922), farm systems, and in some cities, Sunday baseball.
Ritter set a standard with this superb oral history. The players interviewed here have all departed (the last in 1988), but their memories live on in this superb book. Fans might also enjoy BASEBALL WHEN THE GRASS WAS REAL, a similar effort about a later era by Donald Honig.
Amazingly Fun........2007-05-03
This book was a lot of fun to read, it showed a different side of the sport of baseball other than statistic. Told by the people themselves who played the game and in their own words. The author just let them go on for as long as they pleased with any stories they might have to tell. If you enjoy baseball history this is a must read.
The Glory of Their Times.......2007-03-09
Mr Ritter's time was well spent for all to enjoy! His efforts have made an unbelievable event for many to think upon. The times past thru the voices of the men who kicked up the dirt of the old ball fields live on thru his work! Here's to Mr. Ritter, "You won't be denied any of the past, only the fulfilment of it's Diamond Warriors"...Denny Walsh San Antonio, Tx.

Experimental Travel is not about checking off the major sights or following your guidebook to the letter; it's a playful way of traveling, where the journey's methodology is clear but the destination is usually unknown. Experimental Travel renders all destinations equal - be it a burger shack or the Taj Mahal.
Customer Reviews:
Cute idea for the couch traveller.......2006-12-05
Like many workaholics, I don't really travel as much as I would like to so I compensate by reading about travelling. This book is neat in that it gives you strange ideas and unique perspectives without actually limiting you to a location to do it, which makes the daydreaming involved boundless. It's more about what you do when you get somewhere to make your own fun rather than depending on the place to be fun. So some of the suggestions I could see trying out in my home town or when I go on 'vacation' to visit family. In places I've already been or inherently aren't that interesting.
If you're lookign at this as things to do on real vacations, many of the suggestions to "spice up" your travel are a probably a little too over the top for the average person. Ex. go to a romantic city with your lover, but keep it a secret when exactly and where you'll be and see if fate lets you bump into eachother. Things like that I would never really want to do, I mean if I can go on a romantic vacation I want to spend it with someone. Not lookign for them in a game of the gods. But it's still fun to read about. Many of the experiements felt this way. You can tell the editors had fun coming up with them and they are a lot of fun to read about, but probably not something the average person/traveller would really want to try themselves.
Travel With a Serendipitous Twist.......2006-07-11
With travel packages so commonplace as to be its own worst enemy when it comes to the throngs of tourists who concentrate on high-profile destinations, it's a treat to read about the quirky, somewhat off-kilter ideas that author Joel Henry (along with Lonely Planet staff writers Rachael Antony and Andrew Dean Nystrom) provides in this nifty little tome. A middle-aged television writer from Strasbourg, France and now the Director of Latourex, the Laboratory of Experimental Tourism, Henry elaborates on an alternative way of travel that he has been developing for over fifteen years, experimental travel. The idea is to choose destinations not for their logistical convenience, historic importance, climate appeal or overall popularity. Rather, a trip is built around a sense of chance, perhaps humor and hopefully serendipity in order to discover the unexpected and find a personal meaning in such travel.
Henry breaks down his ideas into categories that can come across as creative, flip and sometimes both. For example, in a situation similar to the set-up of Steven Spielberg's "The Terminal", the author discusses "aerotourism", which means spending a day wholly within an airport, using the various facilities meant for on-the-go travelers. This sounds almost reasonable if the airport is as elaborately designed as the ones in Amsterdam's Schiphol and Singapore's Changi, but I assume it could be most challenging in more remote locales. There appears to be greater possibilities with "nyctalotourism" (only visiting tourist attractions between dusk and dawn); "contretourism" (visiting a famous site but then only taking photographs once you turn your back to the site); or the most romantic idea, the aptly named "erotourism" (a couple travels separately to a destination and then each tries to find the other without any contact).
Other ideas don't have such high-concept-sounding names, such as touring your own hometown by staying in the local youth hostel or bringing a personal memento (the Orbitz gnome comes to mind) with you and photographing everything you see with the memento constantly in the picture. He has about forty ideas for you to consider, but I have to admit many of the ideas seem way too random for me to consider. At the same time, this is a nice book for the fertile imagination of the armchair traveler. I think Henry has the right idea in going against the predictable to find one's soul in traveling. It's a concept that Alain De Botton describes with panache in his book, "The Art of Travel", and Henry, for all his quirky notions, seems to be a kindred spirit.
Offers some 40 experiments to expand the concept of 'adventure'.......2005-09-05
For a fine armchair read as well as a different approach to tourism, pick up The Lonely Planet Guide To Experimental Travel and depart from package trips. Lack money or time to travel? Incorporate these potential 'disasters' into your very trip schedule and come up with something different! From exploring song lyrics to testing etiquette by being outrageous, contributors to The Lonely Planet Guide To Experimental Travel offer some 40 experiments to expand the concept of 'adventure'.
Some good ideas, but extremely pretentious.......2005-09-03
Almost everyone begins to tire of the city they live in after a few years. "There's just nothing to do here" and "God, this place is boring" start to become regular utterances to friends and family. What to do?
Well, Lonely Planet has put out this book. It consists of a collection of travel 'experiments', which are actually just games, to make your travels at home and away a bit more enjoyable. I'm not going to lie. Some of these games seem boring and stupid, but there are enough good ideas here to warrant reading the book.
The only quibble I have is the excessive pretension on the part of the authors. Instead of just presenting these games as they are, theyt insist on cloaking their actions in metaphysical double-speak and an excessive amount of self-importance. I really could have done without that.
On the whole though, this is a decent book, and I'm glad to see Lonely Planet is branching out.
More about silly games than real travel adventure.......2005-08-08
I'm a fan of Lonely Planet guidebooks, love to travel and am interested in social experimentation. So I thought this book would be right up my alley. But instead it presents a series of "travel games" which would probably be quite boring in implementation. For example, one game suggests for the person to walk out of their house and then alternate right and left turns until reaching a dead end. Ooh, how exciting! Another involved a guy who spent a day at the mall without spending any money, basically just copying those broke teenyboppers we all know as "mall rats". Needeless to say, his recounting of the "experiment" sounded just as boring as you would expect. I was hoping to find at least a couple of fun ideas that my wife and me could try out together. But not one seemed worth the time and effort.
All this would be just mere tedium. But the authors insist on adding a ridiculously thick layer of pretension to it all. They do this by attempting to relate their dopey games to the ideas of the Surrealists, the dadaists, Freud, Marx and, well, you get the idea. There is nothing radical, revolutionary or even rebellious about these games. So I have no idea why the authors insist on such intellectual grandstanding.
I'm giving it an extra star because I am glad that Lonely Planet is expanding from doing only guidebooks to other travel related writings. But why LP chose this book of boring nonsense as worthy of publication I have no idea. Hey people, save up your money for an actual trip rather than waste it on this junk.

A Midsummer Night`s Death.......2002-05-23
The novel " A Midsummer Night`s Death " deals with relationship, first love, growing up and the death of a teacher. In our opinion it tells a very nice and interesting story, which contains some funny and ironic parts. A negative aspect is that the parts about the climbing are a bit long-winded and very detailed. We think too, that the author has a good way to show the thoughts and feelings of the main character, called Jonathon, by using first person narration. To sum it up we could say, that it is an exciting story, which is pleasant to read for younger people.

Review "A Midsummer Night's Death"
The novel "A Midsummer Night's Death" written by K. M. Peyton is
about the student Jonathan Meredith who has to realize how involved
he is in the death of his English teacher Mr. Robinson.
The structure of the book is very dramatic and the reader recognizes
a rising action. To me, it was quite exciting to read the book
although I do not prefer that kind of literature.
The more you read, the more you are interested in finding out what
the teacher's death is about.
So I can recommend "A Midsummer Night's Death" to those who like
reading novels full of excitement and tension.
A midsummer night's death.......2002-05-23
The book "A Midsummer Night's Death" , written by K. M. Peyton is about the mysterious death of Mr. Robinson, a teacher of a boarding school. One student, Jonathan, was the last one who saw him talking to Mr. Hugo, another teacher.
But not the whole story is about that. Peyton mixed it with a love story. Not only one between a man and a woman, but a student and his teacher.
It's quite exciting, because at the beginning you don't know if Jonathan told the police what he had seen or if he kept it a secret. Therefore we couldn't stop reading the book. When we knew that, the love story between Jonathan and a girl, who had loved the dead Mr. Robinson got more and more interesting.

Find the British version!.......2000-05-04
For some odd reason, the American publisher of this book insisted on changing a MAJOR plot point. I won't tell you what it is, because it's part of the mystery. The change basically eliminates the entire point of the story.
I urge you, if you are interested in reading this book, to go to Amazon.co.uk where you can order a paperback copy of the British version.
Jonathan Meredith, Mrs. Peyton's anti-hero, is thrust once again into an emotionally charged situation when he suspects a teacher he admires has murdered another teacher. Lots of suspense and action. Try to read PROVE YOURSELF A HERO first.

This book is very well done, it is touching, interesting and uses vivid language. Although it's easy to read, it manages to sustain a deep plot with thrilling adventure. I'd reccomend this book to all readers, both young and old. K.M Peyton's A Midsummer Night's Death is a great book.
