Book Description
This book takes a fresh look at professions - their history and sociology, and at the nature both of professional practice and professional competence. Based on research by the authors across 20 varied professions, the book offers an innovative model of professional competence and throws new light on how competence is acquired. It identifies a range of informal learning processes, which seem to be just as important to becoming competent as formal training. As a result, the authors suggest a paradigm of professional development that combines informal and formal learning and also brings together academic and competence-based approaches. Professions, Competence and Informal Learning provides practical advice to professional developers on program design as well as tips for individual professionals on how to exploit their informal learning opportunities. It draws on the research to forecast the future skills needs of professionals and suggests how professional development programs may need to change in response. The book should be of value to anyone who is interested in professional competence, whether as a professional educator or developer, or as an individual professional. It is also potentially of use to trainers and educators in non-professional areas, especially those with an interest in informal learning.

Book Description
Respiration in plants, as in all living organisms, is essential to provide metabolic energy and carbon skeletons for growth and maintenance. As such, respiration is an essential component of a plant’s carbon budget. Depending on species and environmental conditions, it consumes 25-75% of all the carbohydrates produced in photosynthesis – even more at extremely slow growth rates. Respiration in plants can also proceed in a manner that produces neither metabolic energy nor carbon skeletons, but heat. This type of respiration involves the cyanide-resistant, alternative oxidase; it is unique to plants, and resides in the mitochondria. The activity of this alternative pathway can be measured based on a difference in fractionation of oxygen isotopes between the cytochrome and the alternative oxidase. Heat production is important in some flowers to attract pollinators; however, the alternative oxidase also plays a major role in leaves and roots of most plants. A common thread throughout this volume is to link respiration, including alternative oxidase activity, to plant functioning in different environments.

Dave Hughes retreated to the high desert canyons of central Oregon for a week in the autumn of 1994 to fish in solitude. The result of this trip, in part, is this diary--a notebook, really--that follows the wandering thoughts of an angler and a man. These informal yet crystalline entries are meditative reflections on the landscape, the author's love of the outdoors, the mysteries of life and death--in short, the sort of awareness and candor that has attended the most observant anglers through the ages. When Hughes returned home, he felt a deep sense of "renewal." Readers will, too.

Dream Maker.......2003-01-15
I have just finished reading Dave Hughes, "Big Indian Creek", for about the 10th time. If you are a fly fisherman like me, and one who likes to get out and hike and camp along rivers, this book is for you. Every time I read it I feel like I'm there with Hughes, doing all the things I enjoy. It's a pretty layed back book, but it never fails to conjur up dreams. It always makes me want to drop what I'm doing, and head out the door to enjoy the great out of doors. It will definetly get your mind wandering.

A must have..........2007-02-01
The book is well organized, and contains most things that I would want to say. Once I get to Turkey I'll see whether I'm able to use it on the fly, but even if it sees little use, it will be a good insurance policy to make sure I can get around.

Customer Reviews:
THE BEST TURKISH PHRASEBOOK!.......2007-01-25
NEED I SAY MORE?, IT'S GOT A THE LATEST AND MOST ACCURATE INFO.
better than nothing, but preferred Berlitz Turkish phrasebook.......2004-12-14
In the bookstore, I compared this Lonely Planet Turkish with the newer Berlitz Turkish phrasebook/dictionary. Even though Tom, the writer is an expert, I bought the Berlitz offering instead of this LP product. LP Turkish phrasebook does have a nice attractive layout and reasonably comprehensive entries. It's good to be able to compare similar products but LP didn't win in this comparison for me.
Just a reply.......2003-02-03
I would just like to reply one of the reader who is from Austin Texax, had a comment on this book.
i am a Turkish student in America and I have read your comments about the book. However, the comment about the "How are you?" phrase is wrong. The second one is the correct one.
There is also another point i would like to refer to. There is an "i" in turkish without a dot. In some places if you pronounce "i" without dot it may mean something else; for example a common sentence "I'm bored" written as "SIKILDIM"; however if you pronounce with "i" it refers as a slang.
In addition, I totally agree that the writer should take in consideration that the pronounciation differences should held carefully.
Enjoy your holiday in Turkey
Worth while.......2001-05-31
I just returned from traveling all over Turkey and this little phrase book was incredibly helpful. It fit in my pocket, and though most Turks speak english, it helps you find more difficult words or phrases. It helped in explaining that my husband is vegan, providing us with the words to say " I do not even eat meat juices." and when we suspected that we had a baby on the way we went to a pharmacy and the book told us how to say "I think I am pregnant." It was very helpful.
A necessity for a traveller to Turkey (but you also need...).......2001-04-09
This book is excellent for many reasons but three are paramount: (1) it includes an EXCELLENT explanation of the grammar, without which I would never have been able to go beyond memorization to actual comprehension & interaction; (2) it includes Turkish phrases that you will really use, relevant to actual situations you will encounter in Turkey (including conversation on topics like politics and social issues!); (3) the dictionary in the back is truly comprehensive.
If you're travelling to Turkey, you need this book--outside of Istanbul, and off the beaten path, few people speak workable English, and efforts to speak Turkish are not only warmly welcomed, but help tremendously in getting through the day.
There was only one thing I found problematic with this book. The book I was using was NOT the one with the incorrect pronunciation (at least, I don't think so), but I just found the pronunciation (the phonetic rendition of each phrase) really hard to read & use, and I didn't think it produced an accurate rendition of Turkish sounds (if I just read the phonetic phrase, no one would have understood me).
My strong recommendation to other prospective travellers: also get the "Berlitz Turkish Phrasebook" with its audiotape, and listen to the tape about a thousand times--then you won't need the pronunciation guide--you'll know how to pronounce the Turkish words, and more important still, you'll be able to hear & understand quickly-spoken Turkish. You will, however, still need this Lonely Planet phrasebook for your actual travel in Turkey, because the Berlitz one has some fatal flaws (read my review of that book for more details).
Two suggestions for the authors: 1) If you create an audiotape to go with your book, people wouldn't have to buy the silly Berlitz audiotape to learn how to listen & speak! 2) There was one section in the Berlitz book that I really thought was useful: a diagram of a car and labels for all its parts. The same might be good for a bicycle too. Just a thought.
In sum, this phrasebook is a necessity for the traveller, and since they apparently read these reviews, I would like to thank the authors for helping to make my trip to Turkey one of the best of my life.

And solving real-life mysteries? That's right! Watch out Nancy Drew, Bianca is on the caseand this case revolves around Sadie Sinclair, the new girl Bianca has gone out of her way to befriend, only to discover that she's more than a little odd, and hiding something really BIG!
Did someone actually see Sadie, who's only fifteen, driving a car? Why did she freak out at the idea of playing the lead in the school play? And why is Sadie being stalked by a nefarious duo of grown-ups?
To figure out what's causing Sadie's perpetual weirdness, Bianca enlists the help of her private-eye sister Connie, her best friendand planner extraordinaireKerrie, and eventually her boyfriend-in-waiting Doug.
Before too long, Bianca & Company realize that Sadie is involved in something quite serious, and Bianca, unable to contain her desire to know the truth, finds herself tangled in more and more messes, with almost no time left for homework, or for the dreamy Doug. Just before time runs out on helping her new friend, Bianca finally uncovers Sadie's secrets, and, in the process, learns a lesson or two that all do-gooder sleuths would benefit from learning themselves.
Combining slapstick with intelligent wit, Uncovering Sadie's Secrets is a delightful, thoroughly entertaining mystery that pulls, grabs, and sticks while providing laugh-out-loud moments and smiles throughout.
Customer Reviews:
Fun Tween Mystery.......2005-09-13
I bought this book for my 'tween niece who had just graduated from "Harriet the Spy." It reads like a modern Nancy Drew, if Nancy were just a few years younger and didn't wear those mysterious (to modern teens) pedal pushers. My niece loved the book, and I'm looking forward to buying "Finding the Forger" for her next birthday. Here's hoping Libby Sternberg will continue with the series!
Uncovering Sadie's Secrets.......2005-09-05
There's something different about the new girl at school, and Bianca is determined to find out what Sadie's secrets are. At first, the greatest risk involved in her intrepid sleuthing is possibly losing her chance with the guy of her dreams, as the investigation continues to bollux Bianca's attempts to make her dates with the boy. However, it becomes rapidly apparent as shady characters begin to appear, that whatever Sadie's secrets are, they're dangerous to know.
*** If you've read Nancy Drew and thought she was far too perfect, but still enjoyed the teen aged detective genre, then Bianca is the answer to your quest. She charminly solves a baffling puzzle in a way that teens can relate to. ***

A Romantic Mystery for the Teen Set.......2005-07-27
Fifteen-year-old high school student, Biana Balducci likes to live on the edge, so detective-work is perfect for her personality. Being the one willing to welcome a new girl, Biana befriends Sadie, a newcomer from California who is totally freaking out about a friend of hers who is - get this - currently being accused of murder. This bit of information sets Bianca on a search spree to uncover every little thing about Sadie, and her mysterious past, that she can to save Sadie, including helping to keep the Ice Man and the Lemming Lady - two very questionable characters - as far from Sadie as possible, and trailing suspects with her professional Private Eye older sis. As if this whole detective-thing weren't enough hard work, Bianca's trying to figure out hwether she will ever get the chance to show Doug - her secret crush - how she really feels about him.
Since SMOOCH YA first began releasing teen fiction, they have undoubtedly kept readers - including myself - satisfied with the hilarious novels that they have published at least once a month. But lately, they've been adding horror and mystery into the mix, creating an even greater selection of teen fiction. Libby Sternberg's UNCOVERING SADIE'S SECRETS is no exception. Bianca is a hilarious character who is reminiscent of an updated Nancy Drew or Trixie Belden, and will rival the new detective-like character of Bennett Madison's Lulu Dark. Situations involving both relationship dilemmas, as well as cooky stalkers will give readers the best of both worlds - romance and mystery - and keep them coming back for more. A must read.

Uncovering Sadie's Secrets Review.......2004-04-21
This book was great. I enjoyed it very much. Everyting was quick and to the point. I highly recommend this book to fans of the Trixie Belden series.
I was very lucky to be able to meet the author herself. She seemed very nice and really put a lot of effort into this book. I hope that she writes a sequel!
Uncovering Sadie's Secrets is a WINNER!.......2003-11-06
I enjoy mysteries and love to give books as gifts. When this book by a local author was recommended, I thought of my 18 year old granddaughter. I read it first to see if it was age appropriate (not too young!) and found myself pulled right in! I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Sternberg's writing style and knew that teenagers especially, would "tune right in" to her contemporary expressions and identify with Bianca's thoughts and situations. It was a quick read for me as I was really intrigued as to what Sadie's secret was! None of my guesses were correct and so I was VERY surprised at the ending. This book is a winner and I look forward to reading more Bianca Balducci Mysteries as I have Harry Potter!
