Description:
Photodegradation of nitrobenzene (NB) using an excimer UV lamp at a wavelength of 172nm is investigated. Experimental results show that high concentration nitrobenzene can be efficiently degraded with irradiation by excimer UV lamp, and confirm that degradation of nitrobenzene is more efficient by UV/H"2O"2 combination than UV only. In the case of using UV only, 60min of treatment was found to be sufficient to degrade the major part of NB solution with a concentration of less than 4mM. In the case of using the combination of UV/H"2O"2 with a H"2O"2 concentration of 7:1 molar ratio to NB, 4.07mM NB solution drastically decreased to 0.41mM after treatment for only 20min. Degradation intermediate products are identified by analyzing the degradation products with GC/HRMS and possible degradation pathways of nitrobenzene are suggested.

Description:
A comprehensive procedure was established for the fractionation of solvent-extracted environmental samples into three fractions containing polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzo-furans (PCDD/Fs), respectively. The procedure includes multi-layer silica gel chromatography to separate PBDEs from PCBs and PCDD/Fs, and subsequent separation of PCBs from PCDD/Fs using a florisil column. The numbers of congeners involved were 16, 19, and 17, for PBDEs, PCBs, and PCDD/Fs, respectively. The separation of the three chemical groups overcomes the potential mutual interferences, which are difficult to avoid even by the use of high resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS). In addition, this procedure efficiently eliminates most interfering substances from sample matrices for the subsequent instrumental analyses. The method was validated using mixed chemical standards, and applied for the analysis of environmental samples including sediment, sewage sludge and fish tissue. All the recoveries are within the acceptable ranges specified in the USEPA standard methods.

Book Description
This book reveals the remarkable revolution which has occurred in infrared astronomy in recent years as the result of technology breakthroughs in the development and availability of tiny imaging devices known as `arrays'. The book contains the proceedings of a conference at the University of California, Los Angeles in July 1993 at which about 300 participants from all over the world met to discuss the progress and astronomical applications of infrared array detectors. A key feature of the book is the mix of papers describing the detector technology, astronomical instruments or observational methods, with those describing the latest, exciting astrophysical conclusions based on measurements made with the new arrays. In many cases, the images and spectra shown were spectacular, and it was difficult to appreciate that the results were for infrared rather than optical wavelengths. Astronomers, instrument designers and representatives of the infrared detector industry were all present. Reviews of the state-of-the-art in near infrared imaging and spectroscopy and mid-to-far infrared imaging and spectroscopy from ground-based observatories are mixed with reviews of planned space missions such as HST-second generation instruments, ISO, and SIRTF. Prospects for IR astronomy from Antarctica are also described. Finally, the first infrared astronomical science from the 10-m W.M. Keck Telescope is described. Also, numerous astronomical results and new instrumentation ideas are summarized in over 100 poster papers. This book provides an invaluable reference work and an excellent introduction for all astronomers to the rapidly growing field of infrared astronomy. Scientific topics range from studies of solar system objects to galaxies at very high redshifts, and include almost everything in between e.g., star forming regions, the Galactic Center, globular clusters, starburst galaxies and cosmology. Only a few years ago none of these studies would have been possible.

Book Description
Infrared astronomy has undergone an enormous revolution during the last decade. Despite the great technical difficulties of building detectors in a cryogenic environment, the scientific advances in infrared astronomy have been astounding. In the near future many more advances can be expected from still newer developments in telescope and detector designs. High quality detector arrays and passively cooled telescopes are very promising techniques for achieving considerably larger apertures.
This volume contains the refereed papers from the workshop on 'Next Generation Infrared Observatory', dealing with all new aspects of future infrared telescopes.

Book Description
"I'm the man of the hour," Superstar Billy Graham told his audiences, "the man with the power. Too sweet to be sour!"
Despite years of devastating health issues (a long history of drug abuse led to a liver transplant in 2002), the man regarded as one of the most influential professional wrestlers of the past thirty years still flaunts the same optimism that made his interviews as compelling as his matches. In Tangled Ropes, his autobiography, Graham remembers his victories -- and his setbacks -- on both the wrestling and the evangelism circuits in vibrant detail.
At his core, Graham is still Wayne Coleman, the artistic, curious boy who escaped the wrath of his disabled father in post-war Phoenix through painting, sports, and bodybuilding.
When his photo appeared in a bodybuilding magazine, the young man caught the attention of a family in Texas who began praying for his soul. Soon, Wayne found religion at a revival meeting, then mortified his parents as he left home to bend steel, rip phone books in half, and preach the Gospel on the back roads of America.
Because of his natural athleticism, Wayne held a series of jobs -- from bouncer to boxer, from repo man to football player. However, it was under the training of the "Mentor of Mayhem," Stu Hart, that the wrestler was revealed. Then the fading headliner Dr. Jerry Graham bleached Wayne's hair blond and transformed him into an in-ring "brother." Still reverent of men of faith, Coleman became "Billy Graham," after the preacher. Graham completed the package with his golden tan and enormous "pythons," a succession of color-coordinated outfits and jive-talking -- a persona imitated by countless wrestlers, including Hulk Hogan and Jesse "The Body" Ventura.
The Superstar's greatest wrestling achievement came in 1977, when he took the World Wide Wrestling Federation Championship from Bruno Sammartino. He held the prize for nearly a year -- the first wrestling villain to do so. But after he lost the title to wholesome Bob Backlund, Graham fell into a deep depression. He disappeared from the business, squandering his money and losing himself in a haze of drugs.
In Tangled Ropes -- co-written with Keith Elliot Greenberg -- Superstar Billy Graham tells a story that transcends his life in the wrestling profession, offering candor, nostalgia, inspiration, and humor. Graham's narrative is supplemented by anecdotes from personalities like Vince McMahon, Jesse Ventura, Ivan Koloff, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, and California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Customer Reviews:
Wow! I loved this guy and this IS A GREAT BOOK!.......2007-07-22
It's a cliche', but what a page turner. First let me say, I was a HUGE Billy Graham "mark" when I was a kid. He was the first guy that drew me in. He had such charisma. So cool. Anyway, this book is just him 100% totally pouring out his soul. He holds back nothing. Tells you absolutely everything about everyone and mostly - himself.
The stories are more heartbreaking with each page. Everything from him hearing he may only have 30 days to live when he was waiting for his kidney transplant to embarassing moments like when he ditched a cab outside of the Georgia wrestling TV studio because he didn't have the money - only for the guy to come in looking for him and then Dusty Rhodes flips out a $50 bill in front of others to Billy telling him to "pay the taxi".
What's most amazing is that he tells much of his story without heavy bitterness or anger except during his attacks on the WWF and Vince during the steroid trial - which he admits he only did to try to get some hush money from Vince since he really had NO money. It was that he really should have done more and that drugs really did wreck his life.
Wow - I could go on and on and still not give up everything in this book. It really is great. God bless the man of the hour, the man with the power - too sweet to be sour!
A MUST READ FOR ALL WRESTLING FANS.......2007-05-26
THIS IS THE STORY OF FORMER PRO WRESTLER SUPERSTAR BILLY GRAHAM. HIS STORY IS TRULY AMAZING. THE AMAZING PART IS THAT HE IS STILL ALIVE. HE TELLS US OF HIS BODY BUILDING, EVANGELIST, BOUNCER AND PRO FOOTBALL CAREERS ALONG WITH HIS WRESTLING DAYS AND ADDICION TO DRUGS AND STEROIDS. I FOUND HIS STORY TO BE INTERESTING, TERRIFYING, HUMOROUS AND ABSOLUTLY RIVOTING. I HAVE READ MANY BOOKS ABOUT PRO WRESTLING AND THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST. SUPERSTAR CERTAINLY DOES A GREAT JOB TELLING US HIS STORY. HE DELIVERS A POWERFUL MESSAGE ABOUT STEROIDS AND HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS WIFE AND GOD. A MUST READ.
The man of the hour..........2007-03-29
A refreshingly honest and insightful biography. Superstar's life has had plenty of ups and downs, and you go through the entire ride. Lots of great stuff on the inside world of pro wrestling as well.
Great read!.......2007-02-12
I was a huge fan in the late 70's (FL)
It is a great read with a lot of background to wrestling.
I enjoyed the insight and even laughed out loud while reading the different stories.
A very honest biography.
Thanks
Truly a Superstar.......2007-01-19
This was an amazing story of a man that I began watching over 30 years ago. There was so much I wanted to learn about him, and this book filled in all the blanks for me. I was surprised to learn about his closeness to Arnold Schwarzenegger. There are some great photographs as well and amazing road stories. I had only heard about some of stuff that Dr. Jerry Graham used to pull in his drunken hazes. It was only the tip of the iceberg as Wayne described them in detail, ugh. A definite must for any old school fan. Wayne Coleman is an incredible man and his creation Superstar Billy Graham was an tremondous wrestler.
Book Description
"Classy" Freddie Blassie was universally acknowledged as one of the most hated heels in wrestling history. Freddie really knew how to antagonize the fans -- how to "get heat." Death threats were frequent, enraged fans stabbed him twenty-one times, and he was even doused with acid. Undeterred, Blassie just took the action up a level. He reveled in being the heel. It was commonplace to see him biting his opponents and then spitting out their blood. Blassie would routinely "file" his teeth during interviews. His matches in Los Angeles' Olympic Stadium brought him to the attention of Hollywood. Freddie's style and unpredictability made him a natural for the medium, and he became one of the biggest draws in the wrestling business. In the early '60s, he was invited to wrestle in Japan. Blassie both horrified and mesmerized sedate Japanese society.
At seventeen, Freddie made his wrestling debut in a carnival. Unhappy with his choice of occupation, his family persuaded him to get a "real" job, and for a while he worked as a meatcutter. But after serving in the Navy in World War II, Freddie returned to wrestling. Here he picked up his catch phrase: "pencil neck geek."
Early in his career, Blassie wrestled for Jess McMahon, and would later work for both his son, Vincent James McMahon, and his grandson, Vincent Kennedy McMahon, the current owner of World Wrestling Entertainment. When his days in the ring ended, "Classy" Freddie Blassie became the manager of heels, transferring to a whole new generation of wrestlers the style, moves, and ring knowledge that had made him a legend of wrestling.
Released just prior to his death, Legends of Wrestling: "Classy" Freddie Blassie contains vibrant tales of his days in wrestling with the likes of Hulk Hogan, Killer Kowalski, and the Iron Sheik. He frankly chronicles his dealings with the wrestling fraternity and the promoters, even recounting the infamous "boxer vs. wrestler" match with Muhammad Ali, who was managed by Blassie.
His out-of-the-ring stories are equally compelling. Freddie details his countless sexual exploits, and his three marriages. He reflects on the cult status that he gained after his song "Pencil Neck Geek" rocketed to the top of the Dr. Demento Show play list. He recounts his touching relationship with comedian Andy Kaufman, who cast him in Breakfast with Blassie -- an underground classic in which Blassie uttered: "What the hell ever happened to the human race?"
Added to this edition is an epilogue, recounting Freddie's last days and his unforgettable funeral.

"That's why all these broads love me!".......2007-08-17
All you really need to know about me is the names of my five idols: Stan Lee, Stan Laurel, Gomez Adams, Steve McGarrett and Freddie Blassie (hmmm, they are all to some degree fictional--that's something I'll have to bring up in therapy).
Anyway, this is a thoroughly enjoyable and quick read that recounts the well-known events of Freddie's life and spills some beans about him and other wrestling superstars, too. I suspect that it's very heavily ghost-written but what the heck...and if it's cliche to call someone an original, then what the heck again--if anyone deserves it, it's Freddie Blassie.
Pure Blassie.......2007-07-12
He did it all: wrestle for real, for "real"; act on the Dick Van Dyke Show and an Andy Kaufman movie; make popular recordings; advise Muhammad Ali. And not too loing ago he worked on this important book, which belongs in any Sports library, or bookstore department.
When he retired from competition, he became one of the most villanous Managers, whose candor was never appreciated: he would openly admit on Interviews, and in the presence of his proteges, that he remains in the game for the watches and rings. He'd then counter this admission, by showing his self-deprecating side, by pummeling himself with a folding chair. (Just as he filed down his own teeth in his prime of his career).
Blassie takes you back to a period in Wrestling when the stars were believable; when they drove themselves to matches.
Blassie was the King.......2007-05-25
I too grew up in Southern California. To kids my age, Freddie Blassie was as big a sports personality as Don Drysdale or Roman Gabriel. Only Sandy Koufax had more elevated status, and was spoken of in hushed reverential tones.
Even though Blassie usually played the heel, I always stood by him. When he was a "good guy," I was in heaven! His rants with John "The Golden Greek" Tolos were priceless, and have never been duplicated by modern wrestlers.
This book was wonderful! I literally couldn't put it down, and read it in one enjoyable sitting. It really was a "no warts" look at his life. I was surprised to read that people took his work so seriously that he was stabbed several times.
Rest in Peace Freddie Blassie. There'll never be another like you!
Interesting story of a sad character.......2007-03-26
I began watching professional wrestling when I was 8 or 9 years old - back in the days of the Bruiser and Crusher, Verne Gagne and Bruno Sammartino. I loved it then and still watch it now on occasion for fun. The difference being that when I was 9, I thought it was real, when I turned 13 or so, I figured it out and understood it to be "entertainment". Freddie Blassie reminds me a lot of a 9 year old boy who fell in love with the image of professional wrestling and never out grew it. In his book you learn of his rough life growing up. His alcoholic abusive father who left his mother and him when he was young, his dropping out of school after the eighth grade, growing up during the depression, his countless affairs and cheating on his wife (which he justifies), his absentee role as a father of three children (which he justifies), his multiple paranoias and insecurities etc. You learn of Freddie Blassie thru his own words and see the sad and shallow character he truly was and the empty life he lead and yet amazingly he presents it with a sense of pride believing that others envy him and his life. It's this paradox of how he sees his life and how others see it that is truly fascinating. Like getting two completely points of view on a car wreck. The book itself is well written and a good job by the author, I enjoyed reading it. The main charactor howeve is just sad and I can't help but feel sorry for him and how shallow his life must have been.
I'll hit you with my cane, you pencil neck geek! .......2006-11-12
After Mick Foley's first autobiography, Have a Nice Day, became a #1 bestseller, Vince McMahon and the WWE saw a golden opportunity to enter the book market. With biographies by recent stars such as Shawn Michaels, Kane, Kurt Angle, and the late Eddie Guerrero, the leader in sports entertainment has concentrated on this medium as much as it has on other forms of merchandising like T-shirts and DVD's. However, while many of the WWE books have garnered strong sales, it has been the autobiographies by the legends of wrestling that have been the most interesting reads. Ric Flair's To Be the Man is one example and "Classy" Freddie Blassie: Listen, You Pencil Neck Geeks, is another. Being a wrestling fan since the early-1980's, my long lasting vision of Blassie was as a manager for such devious rulebreakers as The Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, and the East-West Connection tag team of Adrian Adonis and Jesse "The Body" Ventura. I only knew of Blassie's reputation as a wrestler through magazines like Pro Wrestling Illustrated and these publications usually only discussed his legendary feud with John Tolos.
However, in reading this book, I learned of the major impact that Freddie Blassie had on professional wrestling. A master storyteller, Blassie discusses his life with the no nonsense approach that you saw on television. He takes you back to a time when the term kayfabe was held as sacred as religion. Wrestlers endured hectic schedules, bounced from one territory to another to survive, and dealt with promoters who were so unscrupulous that they made Vince McMahon Jr. look like a saint. Whether he's discussing his rough upbringing, his legendary career which saw him gain notoriety in both the U.S. and Japan, or his reputation as a ladies man that eventually ended his first marriage and caused a rift in his family until his death, Blassie pulls no punches and leaves nothing unscathed. And unlike most wrestling personalities of his day, he was a crossover star as evidenced in stories with Muhammad Ali, Andy Kaufman, and Regis Philbin. He also pays tribute to his second wife, Miyako, who taught him the meaning of true love and would be the apple of his eye until his passing. A very enjoyable book that never drags, "Classy" Freddie Blassie: Listen, You Pencil Neck Geeks, is an excellent autobiography that I would recommend to all wrestling fans.

Customer Reviews:
WRESTLING BEFORE THE HULK ERA.......2006-03-23
Excellent overview of wrestling in the years prior to the HULK era.My only major complaint is that at the time, the AWA and the NWA also had great wrestlers who deserved to be there.Wrestling was not limited to one organization who controlled everything.I, like many remember a time when we could have three great champions:BACKLUND,RACE and BOCKWINCKEL, who could actually fights against one another once in a while. If there is a dvd i look forward to buy,it's the legacy of the AWA.But enough about the negative side, this book is worth buying for many reasons.First, you'll learn many things you probably didn't know, even if the bios are short. The pioneers like ROCCA,ROGERS,KOWALSKI and SAMMARTINO certainly deserved their reputations.Stories about the inside of the business is also very interesting. And finally this book is sold at a good price.
A classic history of wrestling .......2006-03-18
This book has a terrific premise -- short biographical articles on wrestling's major figures before the Hulk Hogan era. They're all here: Bruno Sammartino, Billy Graham, Superfly Snuka, Classy Freddie Blassie -- even the Rock's dad, Rocky Johnson. This well written book is thoroughly researched and filled with little known facts and fascinating stories -- even interviews with many of the Legends themselves. Particularly illuminating are the articles on Vince McMahon Sr. and Toots Mondt, who started the WWE. This is a top-notch book, a must-have for not only today's wrestling fans, but also those of us who enjoy reliving its glory days and learning more about its history. Highly recommended.
Good...but incomplete.......2006-03-05
This book is a sound introduction to the "backyard days" of pro wrestling -- the days before it was the ellaborate, mainstream entertainment spectacular that it has become nowadays. The book chronicles the days (and the stars) when professional wrestling was divided into different territories, long before the WWE became the monopoly company that most people know it to be.
Long-time fans will appreciate the depth the book goes into regarding superstars from the 1960s (and all the way up to the mid 1980s), and even casual fans will learn a thing or two about wrestling's long and storied history.
It's no doubt that this book has been researched well and laid out in a very organized, easy-to-understand fashion. However, one of the notable flaws is that Hulk Hogan, arguably wrestling's biggest star (and "legend") of all-time, does not get his own specific profile (unlike lesser-known stars like Superfly Jimmy Snuka or Srgt. Slaughter). This error is perplexing, as it can be likened to a book on the "Legends of Baseball" omitting Babe Ruth. Hogan is only mentioned in passing, while he deserves perhaps more pages than any other wrestler of the time. Moreover, it's even more perplexing since Hogan was pivotal in catapulting wrestling into the boom of the 1980s.
All in all, this book is an enjoyable read. But hardly as comprehensive as it claims to be.

Clearly written, accurate, and informative........1999-03-21
We used Offa's Dyke Path South by Kay et al to walk from Capel-y-Ffin to Knighton in the Summer of 1998. The trail was clearly and accurately explained and historical notes made our three day journey even more enjoyable. The maps were good, however I would recommend that you still take a compas and ordnance survey map, just in case. In conclusion, we found the Guide was well worth the purchase price and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone considering walking Offa's Dyke Pathway.

A Good Turning Seventeen Book.......2002-02-14
I was hoping for a better Maya book. THe first book about her was way more interesting. This one just showed how she deals with Amandas bulimia, and how she tries to be good at track again. It didn't really show her relationship with her friends and boyfriend, which is mainly what these books are about. But it was a pretty good book, and I'm happy that I ordered it!
Turning Seventeen continues to explore real teen issues.......2001-05-30
Even though Maya has always had a good relationship with her father, it still feels like she can't really talk to him. When he says that she can stay home alone with her friends she is thrilled - but then he says she has to stay at Marleen's house. It could be worse right? Then Maya tries out for the track team and misses her usual spot - what is happening? When one of the other girls offers her some vitamins she isn't sure that they will help, but there is more to the vitamins than meets the eye, and someone may hurt her before she has a chance to find out the truth. Another eye opening book in this true to life series, I wish that this book had been around when I was seventeen.
