      Book Description

Explore the powerful role of managers in building an ethical workplace

Value-Centered Ethics: A Proactive System to Shape Ethical Behavior Charles D. Kerns, Ph.D., MBA

What's all the fuss about ethics? Don't all of the really bad unethical managers go to jail? Why is this relevant to me? Why should I be ethical when everyone else cheats? How can I get ahead if I am always being honest?

Many managers today lack an understanding of the importance of ethical leadership in today's organizations. Yet how managers behave is the single most important factor in determining the level of ethical behavior in an organization.

The good news is that the practice of ethical leadership is teachable and doable. Value-Centered Ethics provides a framework and system to prepare you to face real-world ethical dilemmas and decision points in your daily work—so you can avoid ever being put on the "hot seat" of ethical inquiry.

Drawing from examples, checklists and tools, the book presents clear, accessible, and practical guidelines that leaders in organizations of all types and sizes can easily put to use.

      You'll learn how effective managers:

      • Influence others with proven skills that enhance their people's perceptions that they are being treated ethically
      • Set ethically anchored direction for their organizations
      • Focus operations on ethical considerations
      • Link resources with ethics in mind

Value-Centered Ethics contains 12 chapters covering a wide range of issues to help you sort through or create your own approach to ethical behavior. Topics include:

      • Specific things you can say and do to encourage ethical organizational behavior
      • Derailers that can cause an otherwise ethical person to transgress
      • A useful way to manage behavioral consequences of ethical as well as unethical conduct
      • Why you should care about ethics
      • How ethical behavior is shaped and maintained
      • How to develop behavioral standards to further influence ethical conduct
      • A proactive approach to handling ethical dilemmas

No doubt you will face ethical challenges in your career—all leaders do. If you keep this book close at hand, it will help you stay on course as you strive to shape the ethical behavior of those around you.

      Key lessons:
      • Managers need an internalized system of virtuous values, action roles, and behavioral standards to proactively respond to ethical challenges.
      • Good people can do bad things. The likelihood that you will be derailed diminishes if you have a value system guiding you.
      • Having good reasons to care will motivate you to follow the ethical course.
      • Virtuous values will make you less vulnerable to unethical temptations.
      • Using your interpersonal influence skills combined with virtuous values enables you to promote the practice of ethical leadership.
      • Managers have a responsibility to effectively communicate a clear and meaningful direction to their people.
      • Managers have a responsibility to focus their people on success.
      • Behavioral standards help provide concrete ways to "operationalize" your values.
      • Ethical behavior is best shaped and maintained by positive reinforcement.
      • Ethical behavior starts with you.

          Book Description

Amaranth is a drought-tolerant plant which provides both high-protein grain and delicious edible leaves. Zai holes use termites to improve soil fertility and increase water filtration in farmers' fields in West Africa. These are just two of the plants and techniques people are using to produce food under difficult growing conditions in the troics.

This book is an expanded, updated compilation of fifteen years of the technical bulletin ECHO Development Notes (EDN). Over 4,000 people in 140 countries share their ideas and experiences through EDN as they assist small farmers and urban gardeners in feeding their families and making a living. This collection of ideas from around the world holds promise for places which face special challenges in growing food. The topics include vegetables, fruits, dryland and hillside farming systems, multipurpose trees, pest control, animals, seeds and urban gardening.

ECHO networks ideas, information and seeds to help development workers and missionaries in their service with people who are hungry. We share information about plants and methods with potential to improve nutrition and income in the tropics so that field workers have more ideas to test in their communities.

5 out of 5 stars Boat electrical sysstems.......2007-09-20

This is the best electrial book on marine electrical systems I have ever read. I am a power boat owner and would have titled the book Sailboat and Power Boat Electrics Simplified. I wired our 23' Bayliner Ciera for AC power using this book. Every boat owner needs to have a copy of this book. They make great Christmas and Birthday presents for your boat owner friends.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a basic book, and profoundly well written!!.......2007-07-31

I was trained as a microwave electronics technician in the Air Force, and have studied Ham radio theory for years, so I didn't go into the wiring of my Newport 27, or my investigations of installing an HF ham transceiver cold, but Mr. Casey has written a book that, as others have said here, is so easy to read, and covers so much ground at the same time, that it's a truly profound work that added greatly to my technical and theoretical abilities and understanding. You don't truly understand the depth he touches on, or the wisdom in which he unifies and relates various theories, unless you come from some technical discipline. Only then do you recognize his insight as way more than a basic book for beginners. Don't let the personable, "easy read" fool you, this guy's good. I think it was Einstein who said something like "you don't really understand your field unless you can explain the most complex of it's theories to a child." Well Mr. Casey exemplifies that concept.

As another reviewer here has said, it would be nice to see an updated edition covering the latest technologies like conversion of lighting over to LED, Absorbed Glass Mat Batteries (AGM), etc., and Mr. Casey, I'm ready to buy it if you're ready to write it.

But don't wait for a new edition, buy this book, without a doubt.

5 out of 5 stars Sailboat Electrics are simplified!.......2007-07-08

Book is very good, recommend reading straight through if you have the time or if you have a basic understanding you can go to the section that is applicable. even if you have basic understandings of the system, the insight of reading every chapter is valuable.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent informational resource.......2006-11-03

I have had a basic understanding of electricity and electronics since I was a kid. This book took me to a whole new level of understanding in a thorough and easy-to-understand format. The information has helped me to better understand the electrical system on my sailboat. I highly recommend this book to any do-it-yourselfer as well as anyone who just wants a better understanding of what is going on with the electrical system on your boat.

4 out of 5 stars Clear as water.......2006-03-25

I bought this book to help me rebuilt the electrical wiring of my sailboat and it is very helpful! All explanations are short and clear. The numerous sketches make it easy to understand and visualize what i need to do. However, i found that some information on the batteries are not up to date. And i think that it would be nice to have information about 'new' technologies and 'new' products such as combiners, isolators, LED lights, etc. All in all this book is (to me) an excellent reference for anyone who owns a boat and wants to learn the fundamentals of marine electricity.

                      Book Description

As the beautiful daughter of a wealthy moneylender, Jessica leads a relatively privileged life in the Jewish Ghetto. But during her rare walks through the main streets of Venice, she has caught glimpses of the colorful, exciting world outside. Then, by chance she meets a handsome aristocrat named Lorenzo who has, it seems, everything that Jessica longs for, and who promises to make her his wife. There is one painful condition, however: She must convert to Christianity. Will Jessica follow her desires, even if it means leaving behind everyone she loves, and abandoning her religion? Will her father, Shylock, survive this betrayal?

Mirjam Pressler cleverly expands upon Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice, offering a richly complex portrait of life in sixteenth-century Venice. This fascinating historical novel has been beautifully translated by Brian Murdoch, whose afterword gives readers a meaningful perspective on the difficult relations between Christians and Jews during that period.

                      3 out of 5 stars I've Read Better.......2002-02-21

First of all, the title and cover explanation of the book don't exactly describe the book all that well. After you read them, you think that the story will be about Shylock's daughter, Jessica. Instead, a lot of the book is told by the point of view of Dalilah, Jessica's sort of servant/friend/sister.
The main reason I'm giving it three stars is because I don't think that many people would enjoy it - probably only history and Shakespeare buffs. So if you're not into either, it's not the book for you. Also, I was a little disappointed after I read it: it wasn't what I was expecting. It is definately a Young Adult/Adult book, though. The description of the setting, events and characters is wonderful, and the plot is okay. The characters all show some development. It is a good book, I guess, but it will never be one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Brings the times to life.......2001-09-18

Mirjam Pressler's Shylock's Daughter tells of a beautiful teen, daughter of a wealthy money-lender who leads a privileged life in the Jewish ghetto. Her involvement with a Christian man in 1568 Venice will change all their lives in this extrapolation from Shakespeare's play, which brings the times to life.

2 out of 5 stars And the moral of the story is..........2001-08-24

...Never ever abandon your faith to run off with a goy!

_Shylock's Daughter_ provides a fascinating response to Shakespeare's _The Merchant of Venice_, as author Pressler strived to humanize the play's more one-dimensional characters. Providing a rich and complex view of Jewish life in sixteenth-century Venice, Pressler does her best to provide a variety of different viewpoints as she tells her story. Unfortunately, Pressler's array of narrators are as defensively pro-Jewish as Shylock's character was virulently anti-Jewish.

The title leads us to expect Shylock's daughter Jessica to be the martyred heroine of Pressler's book, but the plot systematically paints her as the most unlikeable character in it. Contrasted with her ugly but righteous foster sister Dalilah, who does most of the early narration, "free-thinking" Jessica is depicted as spoiled, selfish, and capricious. Jessica's desire for "freedom," which might be understandable to a modern teenager if it were coached in more meaningful terms, seems shallow and sinful when contrasted with Dalilah's pious obedience. "Freedom," as far as the early narrators are concerned, is nothing more than a catch-word for "extravagance," and is respected (or not) as such.

"Love" also takes a back seat. Jessica's seduction by Lorenzo is complete by the time the story begins, and we never see what caused her to fall in love with him in the first place. (We do of course hear the theory that he is only interested in her for her money.) When Jessica does assert herself as a narrator, it is after their elopement, when Lorenzo's love has failed to meet her expectations, when she finds the Christian feasts filled with sin and mockery, when every thought of her robbed and broken-hearted father fills her with shame. The contrast between Jessica's quick treatment of her love and her elaborate telling and re-telling of her everlasting regret is so stark that it diminishes Jessica from a character to a moral vehicle.

Jessica's unhappiness after giving up her faith for her freedom is so enormous, so complete, that one cannot help but wonder (as sweet Dalilah does) what on earth she was thinking at the time. Pressler leaves no room for doubt that Shylock's daughter was woefully duped, that Shakespeare's Christian characters are all vicious villains, and that only a quiet life as a pious Jewish daughter is worthwhile in such time of trouble. And in such terms, this story is not likely to be very interesting to anyone who wonders *how* Jessica came to discard her faith and *why* she did what she did.

Though the antithesis of the Shakespearian "happily-ever-after" is quite refreshing, Pressler's exclusive focus of the consequences of Jessica's action makes her story read like an Aesop fable. "And the moral of the story is..."

5 out of 5 stars Shylocks Daughter Review.......2001-08-16

This is an excellent book taking out aspects of the play by Shakespeare; the Merchant of Venice. But don't let this put you off as it is very up to date and has issues that we deal with in every day life such as religous racism and prejudice, loyalty and friendship, greed and pride, and family tentions.

Jessica is the daughter of a traditional jew and they live in a Jewish ghetto. There are many historical facts in this book such as: the gates of the ghetto are locked so she and many other Jews are imprisoned in this part of the city. She longs to be free of the rules of the Jewish tradition.

When she falls in love with a young christian she leaves and robs her father and runs away to marry Lorenzo. But this new world is not so welcoming to this Jewish girl.

We are left wondering if Jessica is ever truly happy. Did she really know Lorenzo when she married him or was she just as much in love with all the riches of a Christian life that her religion forbids?

This is a great read and I reccomend that you read it.

This book is set at a Jewish ghetto in Rome in the twelfth century but adresses issues that I see are in our world today. Issues of racial and religious prejudice, greed and pride and authority figures and teenagers love and reality. Jessica is born in her fathers frugal ways and strict following of the Jewish rules. It is based on the Merchant of Venice and is a story full of adventures and surprises.

                        Book Description

When the beautiful Jessica Pruitt arrives in Venice to star in a film based on The Merchant of Venice, she is preoccupied: she has recently lost custody of her daughter, and as an older actress she is increasingly aware of the difficulty of landing leading roles. One day, as she wanders through an old Jewish ghetto, Jessica is magically transported to sixteenth-century Venice where she finds herself the heroine of "Will" Shakespeare's play. Immediately attracted to the younger playwright, Jessica enters into an intensely passionate love affair that defies time and place. Reading group guide included.

                        5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-07-16

I've read most of Erica Jong's work, poetry included, and simply adore it all. This one in particular is my first-read, and personal favorite. I've read Fear of Flying atleast three times in the last ten years, and continue to recommend it to female friends with a bent toward the literary. Critics sometimes compare Erica Jong to Anais Nin, which I find unfair; the two authors do not belong in the same genre. I find Jong's writing much more sophisticated, entertaining, imaginative, and interesting. She speaks to the heart and soul of modern, literate women, as Fear of Flying proves resoundingly. It truly is a contemporary classic.

5 out of 5 stars much better than Sex in the City in describing real relationships and the complexity of being a woman in the wake of Feminism.......2006-06-21

Erica Jong really accurately describes the complexity of relationships, desire, love, dependence and freedom. Even though this book is seen as a symbol of the women's liberation movement in the 70s (which is before I was born), it's not at all out of date.

I read Fear of Flying straight though, looking for the answers to the most difficult questions: how do I remain independent without just being lonely? how can we control love, others, and ourselves? what makes a relationship work? where does sex come into the equation? what's love got to do with it? and what do you do when a relationship is pretty darn good but not perfect?

The book doesn't have an answer key, and doesn't try to simplify what is inherently complex. Instead it is vividly real, and sticks with you long after you're done reading it.

                        4 out of 5 stars Just one woman's experience.......2006-06-16

"Fear of Flying" by Erica Jong has been praised for its air of liberation and liberating it may be--for some women. I find it hard to relate to a woman who today would most likely be on the highest dosage of Prozac. At the same time however, the book does explore themes such as fear, guilt, freedom and love in a way that I believe all women can relate to. As for liberating, if you need to hear a tale about some crazed writer, her fears, her angst and her mis-judgments to feel liberated, then this is a great book for you.
Erica's use of symbolism and stream of consciousness is masterful. The book is entertaining and well written but in the end it is just one woman's crazy experience. And if that crazy experience provides the inspiration that some women need to "break free" from their socialized behaviors, so be it.

4 out of 5 stars Fear of Flying: Fear of Life.......2006-04-29

This book was being gestated before I was, yet its messages still ring true. Women are still struggling with the search for the love, what it means to be a "good" woman, what it means to be a woman at all. Writers (aka: me) still struggle with the urge to write, the fear to write, the fear of failure, the search for self. Part rant, part story, part stream of consciousness, the sentiments/fears/etc. in this book hit very close to home, yet do give a hint of hope - we can find our way through the wilderness of life, and it's worth the living.
