          5 out of 5 stars A Real Gem!.......2005-12-08

Andrew Liddle's little book is a real gem, and, apart from cosmology students, it should appeal to anyone seriously interested in understanding modern cosmology. Of course, there is an important prerequisite: the reader should have a college-level knowledge of maths and physics. Therefore, this is not a book for the general public, such as, e.g "A Brief History of Time" by S.W. HAWKING, or "The First Three Minutes" by S.WEINBERG.
In fact, the book is divided in two distinct parts: the main body of the book, chapters 1 to 15, and the "Advanced Topics" section. The first part is self-sufficient, and covers all what is required for an honest but thorough understanding of the subject, using Newtonian mechanics only. The second part is meant for those readers who would like to explore a little deeper, but who must be familiar with General Relativity and tensor calculus. It is interesting to note here that the main body of Modern Cosmology can be understood without any reference to Einstein's theory.
As the book is designed for students, the author has added a set of problems (with answers and hints at the end of the book) after each chapter. I consider that solving these problems is a must if one wants to make sure that the subject has been properly assimilated.
Unfortunately, and even though this is the book's second edition, there is a number of errors, which the author has summarized in an Errata list posted on his Home Page on the Web.Therefore, readers should correct the text accordingly before getting on with their reading.
But there is an error which has escaped both the author's and the reviewers scrutiny; it is to be found in paragraph A3.2.2, page 140. Here the subject of Heavy Neutrinos is treated, and the author introduces an "exponential suppression factor" which has the wrong notation, with the temperature term in the numerator of the negative exponent. As a result, one obtains the opposite effect of what is claimed, as this factor increases with the neutrino mass, going from 0 for very small masses to 1 for very large ones. Actually, the "exponential suppression factor" should have the form of equation (12.1), page 92, with the temperature term in the denominator of the exponent.
But even then, the "predicted" neutrino mass of 1 GeV would make the exponential vanish [exp (-1000) = 0] and the neutrino density vanishes as well, instead of becoming equal to 1 as claimed. It seems that the author has a problem with exponential factors:at page 81, it is stated that the exponential in Eq 10.17 "will dominate if the temperature is much greater than the binding energy".In fact, in this case the exponential is very close to 1 and does not dominate. However, this has been taken care of in the Errata list.
I am sure Dr. Liddle, whom I have informed of this new error on 30 November 2005, will remedy the situation by posting an update of paragraph A 3.2.2 on his Home Page.Because as it is, the whole paragraph does not make any sense at all...
PS-On 13 December 2005, Dr Liddle addressed this error in his Errata list.

3 out of 5 stars An Introduction to Modern Cosmology.......2005-08-28

I sent this book back and got my mony back.
Not because it was not a good book, but it was way beyond my mathmatical ability to read it.
This is a very technical book, more geard towards a serious scientist.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific introduction to cosmology.......2005-06-01

That is a very good introduction book to cosmology at an undergraduate level. Although there are not many complicated equations, the physics ideas are very clear. It covers a lot of materials with easy-to-understand languages. The big bang model is the main part, with concise introduction to dark matter/energy, neuclosynthesis, cosmic microwave background, inflation etc. After reading this book, you will have a general idea about most of the concepts in cosmology and about what is going on in modern cosmology. Each chapter is accompanied by some problems, which are good exercise to understand the context. But I think it is a little outdated now, so maybe you should buy the 2nd edition.

4 out of 5 stars A concise and accessible overview........2004-03-29

This is a highly readable introduction to Cosmology. The author states clearly that the approach is grounded in physics rather than mathematics and indeed, any reader with a basic grasp of single-variable calculus would cope with the derivations that are presented. Its ready accessibility would make it an enjoyable introduction for those working on their own wanting more than a 'popular 'account of Cosmology.I have adapted and used some of the material and problems for my year 13 physics class.

The main body of the book is self-contained and requires no further material for the interested reader to get to grips with the rudiments of the standard cosmological models. More complex results are stated without derivation and some are used as the basis for the exercises. The 'Advanced' topics require a little more of the reader and are presented as brief summaries rather than being rigorous. For example ,the chapter on General Relativistic Cosmology is 'for those readers who have experienced some general relativity'. As a teacher of physics,I found this book to be a very useful addition to my library.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction.......2002-08-10

I came across this book because it was required reading for my cosmology course. The book gives a Newtonian (it only briefly mentions the much more complicated General Relativity equations) overview of the current theories about the universe: its mass, its age, its shape and its ultimate destiny. The text is very readable, equations are explained properly and the diagrams are useful. The reader is left with a good impression of why the currently proposed cosmological models are sensible.

The book puts the case for the hot big bang model, which is by far the most popular cosmological model at this time. There is a chapter on the successes of this model: explanation of the cosmic background radiation, universal expansion, and the relative abundance of elements in the early universe. There follows a chapter on the major problems of this model: how come the background radiation looks the same (to within one part in a hundred thousand) everywhere, even when light hasn't had time to travel between all these regions? How did the universe become structured (into things such as stars) when physics predicts that matter should be homogeneously spread? And why does the universe (seemingly) possess the exact right density (to almost infinitessimal precision) to stay flat, as we see it today? Inflation theory offers some help, but at the same time asks a bigger question: which of the many inflation theories (if any) is right? Liddle doesn't go into much detail on this point, but you get a good introduction into what inflation is and why such an odd theory would be proposed.

I'm making it sound as if the big bang model has more problems than it solves, which I don't think it does (heck, it's the best theory we've got). But the problems are more interesting!

On which subject, there are problems (solvable ones!) at the end of each chapter, with brief solutions at the end of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Subset of Introduction to Modern Astrophysics.......2006-12-15

Aimed at the advanced physics or astronomy undergraduate student, this is an offspring of Introduction to Modern Astrophysics, often called BOB (Big Orange Book).

The one problem most often reported about BOB is its size, 1400 pages. Consequently this new, less expensive, smaller book has been produced that is smaller, more compact, and aimed at specific subject areas. In this book numerous subjects have been simply left out. These include: optics, the Solar System, and pulsars. Other areas have been greatly reduced in size: stellar evolution and radiative transfer. What's left is the core material needed for a course in Galactic Astrophysics and Cosmology.

This new second edition, badly needed since the first edition is now ten years old. In these ten years, there seems to have been just about as much discovered as in the centuries before. Discoveries like the universe is not slowing down but, rather, is actually accelerating, Dark energy wasn't even imagined at that time (and isn't easy to imagine now).

The book is aimed at the advanced undergraduate level after the student has had several previous physics classes and mathematics through differential equasions.

Volume 2 deals at some length with CP-violation, but is mainly devoted to QCD and its application to "hard" processes. The authors briefly cover "soft" hadronic physics, also. This work will provide a comprehensive reference and textbook for all postgraduate students and researchers interested in modern particle physics.

          4 out of 5 stars Nice Text.......2001-07-02

Modern Stellar Astrophysics was a nice book. It was organized very well and presented the material in an orderly fashion. I thought that it lacked depth though. It gave many concepts, but they lacked mathematical examples to go with those concepts. A good book for people who already understand modern physics, but for those without a deep understanding of modern physics it will leave many open questions. Lastly, the homework questions at the end of the chapters resembled those examples throughtout the chapters themselves very closely and even identically, thus answering them takes absolutely no analytical skills just mere copying.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Comprehensive Introduction to the subject.........2000-10-09

This is an excellent introduction to Stellar Astrophysics, covering from the very start the essential concepts needed to undertake the subject, and gradually building up untill a nice introductory level is achieved. The book is well organized: divided into two blocks, starts by setting a solid basis upon which later presents the subject. In the first and introductory part, the essential astronomical concepts are explained, and in the second part the author gets into the actual Astrophysics of Stars. The book is pleasant on several levels; conceptually, coherently and aesthetically, all this while making use of a clear, straightforward matheticall formalism which is simple enough to follow. It is well suited for an introductory course at the undergraduate level, and one of the few books which actually bridges the gap between the high-level available pieces and the general public oriented literature on the subject.

ECW was the upstart promotion which revolutionised the wrestling industry. Turning The Tables is the first published history of the company which grew from a run-down bingo hall to become a national pay-per-view competitor... then crashed in a sea of debt.

John Lister (author of Slamthology) gives an independent, objective and informative account that reveals hidden secrets and shatters common myths. From a little-known truth about ECW's most famous feud to a blow-by-blow account of what really happened in Revere, this book will give you the true story behind America's most controversial wrestling group.

I haven't had a chance to read the book as of this entry, but I feel it was about time that someone wrote a book about ECW. Too often people will herald WCW and WWE but forget about the ideas and stars from ECW that both companies made fortunes off of. ECW is near and dear to my heart as it was a welcomed change to what wrestling was showing at the time. I wish this book included more of the classic ECW pictures from times past but I still anticipate sitting down to read it.

IT WAS the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of violence, and it was the age of extreme. But this tale began in the city of brotherly love -- Philadelphia. Extreme Championship Wrestling is a cultural anomaly that will forever go down in the memories of wrestling fans as a revolutionary style of anti-establishment fueled by a cult of passionate fans that had as much to do with the product as the men inside the ring.

John Lister, based out of the United Kingdom, set out to uncover the seedy underbelly of the phenomenon known to wrestling fans the world over as ECW. The concept is technically the property of Vincent Kennedy McMahon but the memories belong to the fans. "Turning the Tables, The Story of Extreme Championship Wrestling" is a celebratory journey down memory lane for crazy fans of Extreme wrestling. Lister takes readers back even before the beginning and after the end, hitting on all points in between. He exposes what happens backstage and recalls some of ECW's most unforgettable moments. Credit is given to the important people who kept the company going as long as it did, and proper tributes paid to the army of extreme wrestlers who gave their blood, their bodies, and in some cases their lives, to make ECW so great.

Turning the Tables is a great book about something that interests all wrestling fans. Through the pages of this book you will experience the true influence that ECW had on all aspects of today's wrestling product and you will be left with a newfound feeling of respect for Extreme Championship Wrestling.

Rating: 7/10 - Must have a genuine interest.

5 out of 5 stars The real ECW, the real story........2006-06-26

From the author behind acclaimed wrestling travelogue Slamthology, Turning The Tables takes a fascinating and detailed look at the company that revolutionised professional wrestling, the reasons behind both its success, and its downfall, and all with the insight and acerbic wit that readers of his previous book have come to expect from this author.

Like many rags to riches to rags stories, the tale of ECW is a captivating one, and here John Lister takes us on the complete journey, covering every major incident throughout ECW's storied history, the characters, the angles, the fans, and the deals taking place behind the scenes. There's even a shocking discovery that blows the lid on a long established piece of ECW folklore. Even long term fans have plenty to learn from this book, and will also enjoy reminiscing about the glory days of the original ECW. For fans whose only exposure to ECW is the recent WWE revival, and wondering what's the original story behind the relaunched version they see today, Turning The Tables will bring them completely up to speed.

Some critics may make mention of the fact that the author didn't actively interview anyone connected with ECW for this book, but actually, that makes it the better of the ECW books on the market. In writing this book, the author has no agenda, no bias, and as a journalist and long-time fan not actively involved with the company or its employees, has no need to twist the facts, gloss over certain events, or attempt to rewrite history. Turning The Tables gives a more complete picture of the story than similar books, rather than having the pacing and emphasis determined by who was available for interview at the time of writing, and it's because of this that it really stands out above its competition.

So, for fans of professional wrestling and ECW - be it the original incarnation or the 21st century relaunch - Turning The Tables is an invaluable guide to the cult company that left an indelible scar carved into the forehead of the business.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Historical Look At ECW.......2006-06-15

My initial viewing experience in Cleveland (OH) with the ECW television program was through shows airing on a small station based in Akron/Canton (OH) that was not picked up by most cable outlets outside that area. I was lucky enough to have a Sony Watchman that picked up the station.

Based on that TV show and word of mouth, ECW sold out its first show in Cleveland at the Agora nightclub, which was known for holding metal shows. Needless to say it wasn't the typical crowd found at WWF and WCW house shows held at the larger venues in the city.

Lister captures that energy and excitement of ECW as it built up its following from Philadelphia and the East Coast to taking the product nationwide, and then the collapse of the organization (with the rebirth as a subsidiary of WWE).

Lister is not hampered one bit by not having access to those involved in ECW for interviews (most likely due to the recent book and DVD put out through WWE). Rather, Lister takes secondary sources, along with his encyclopedic knowledge of the organization through viewing shows live and on tape, to weave an outstanding and unbiased look at the company.

He also points out key points in storylines that appeared in WWF/WCW sometimes years later and also has enough information on what was happening in the major organizations to place ECW in its proper historical perspective.

A major plus is Lister's comprehensive list of wrestlers who were part of ECW. That in itself is worth the price of the book.

I want to remember ECW as the inovative organization with performers willing to push the (bingo) cards off the table and that kicked hard to force WWF/WCW to alter its product, no matter how lame the knock-offs ultimately were to fans "in the know."

If there is one book you want to pick up to chronicle the history of ECW, Turning the Tables is it.

Contemporary Rome more than stands up to its past. In Best of Rome, our resident author reveals a city bubbling over with festivals, food markets, street parties, open-air opera, jazz, hip hop and salsa clubs, all making use of the city's unfeasibly beautiful setting. As the saying goes, 'Roma, non basta una vita' (for Rome, a lifetime is not enough).

                        Book Description

Raise the Flag Series Book 4 A diverse group of high school girls faces the challenges of standing up for what they believe is right. You’ll cheer them on and learn more about yourself in each book of the Raise the Flag series!

One of the two editors-in-chief of the King High newspaper, Norie runs with the "high achiever" crowd: kids who participate in things like the Academic Olympics...and cheating rings.

As a Christian who has recently rededicated her life to God, Norie doesn't want to be a part of it. But stress builds as her friends pressure her to help them. Even worse, Norie's dad wants her to study more instead of spending time with her prayer partners, the Flagpole Girls. He desperately wants her to get into Harvard. But with the change in the grade curve, that'll never happen unless Norie starts cheating, too. Now if she's going to resist the temptation—and avoid being framed by the very kids she's trying to stop—she's going to need prayer, and her Christian friends, more than ever before.
