Book Description
The 38 chapters of this
Field Manual provide the tools required for planning experiments with entomopathogens and their implementation in the field. Basic tools include chapters on the theory and practice of microbial control agents, statistical design of experiments, equipment and application strategies. The major pathogen groups are covered in individual chapters (virus, bacteria, protozoa, fungi, nematodes). Subsequent chapters deal with the impact of naturally occurring and introduced exotic pathogens and inundative application of microbial control agents. The largest section of the Manual is composed of 21 chapters on the application and evaluation of entomopathogens in a wide range of agricultural, forest, domestic and aquatic habitats. Mites and slugs broaden the scope of the book. Supplementary techniques and media for follow-up laboratory studies are described. Three final chapters cover the evaluation of
Bt transgenic plants, resistance to insect pathogens and strategies to manage it, and guidelines for evaluating the effects of MCAs on nontarget organisms.
Readership: Researchers, graduate students, practitioners of integrated pest management, regulators, those doing environmental impact studies. The book is a stand-alone reference, but is also complementary to the laboratory-oriented
Manual of Techniques in
Insect Pathology and similar comprehensive texts.

ANOTHER CLASSIC IN THE FIELD OF INSECT PATHOLOGY!!!.......2001-09-13
This is an excellent book, with lots of up-to-date information which will be of great use to those interested in microbial control of insect pests. It serves as a complement to Lacey's "Manual of Techniques in Insect Pathology." Unfortunately, the book is ridiculously priced, which will greatly limit its availability. Imagine spending over [price] in Latin America or Africa for ONE book. It won't happen.

Book Description
The
Field Manual of Techniques in Invertebrate Pathology is designed to provide background and instruction on a broad spectrum of techniques and their use in the evaluation of entomopathogens in the field. The second edition of the
Field Manual provides updated information and includes two additional chapters and 12 new contributors. The intended audience includes researchers, graduate students, practitioners of integrated pest management (IPM), regulators and those conducting environmental impact studies of entomopathogens. Although it can function as a stand alone reference, the
Field Manual is complementary to the laboratory oriented
Manual of Techniques in Insect Pathology and to comprehensive texts in insect pathology.
The Editors have structured the 40 chapters of the
Field Manual into 10 sections to provide the tools required for planning experiments with entomopathogens and their implementation in the field. The basic tools include chapters on the theory and practice of application of microbial control agents (MCAs) (Section I), statistical considerations in the design of experiments (Section II), and three chapters on application equipment and strategies (Section III). Section IV includes individual chapters on the major pathogen groups (virus, bacteria, microsporidia, fungi, and nematodes) and special considerations for their evaluation under field conditions. This section sets the stage for subsequent chapters on the impact of naturally occurring and introduced exotic pathogens and inundative application of MCAs. Twenty-three chapters on the application and evaluation of MCAs in a wide variety of agricultural, forest, domestic and aquatic habitats comprise Section VII of the
Field Manual. In addition to insect pests, the inclusion of mites and slugs broadens the scope of the book. Most of the chapters in this section include step by step instructions on handling of inoculum, design of field experiments and experimental plots and application and assessment of efficacy of dozens of MCAs. Several of these chapters include supplementary techniques and media for conducting follow up laboratory studies for confirmation of infection, determination of persistence, etc. The three final chapters include: special consideration for evaluation of Bt transgenic plants (Section VIII); resistance to insect pathogens and strategies to manage resistance (Section IX); and guidelines for evaluating effects of MCAs on nontarget organisms (Section X).
Due to uncertainty regarding the future availability of organophosphate and other conventional chemical insecticides, MCAs will play increasingly important roles in IPM. The
Field Manual will provide researchers and IPM practitioners with techniques and practical guidance for the study and optimal use of MCAs in a variety of settings.

Book Description
The headlines proclaimed the 1919 fix of the World Series and attempted cover-up as "the most gigantic sporting swindle in the history of America!" First published in 1963, Eight Men Out has become a timeless classic. Eliot Asinof has reconstructed the entire scene-by-scene story of the fantastic scandal in which eight Chicago White Sox players arranged with the nation's leading gamblers to throw the Series in Cincinnati. Mr. Asinof vividly describes the tense meetings, the hitches in the conniving, the actual plays in which the Series was thrown, the Grand Jury indictment, and the famous 1921 trial. Moving behind the scenes, he perceptively examines the motives and backgrounds of the players and the conditions that made the improbable fix all too possible. Here, too, is a graphic picture of the American underworld that managed the fix, the deeply shocked newspapermen who uncovered the story, and the war-exhausted nation that turned with relief and pride to the Series, only to be rocked by the scandal. Far more than a superbly told baseball story, this is a compelling slice of American history in the aftermath of World War I and at the cusp of the Roaring Twenties.

The little guys took the fall........2007-05-24
I saw the movie, but the book explains in more detail the tragedy of the 1919 World Series White Sox (or Black Sox). This book details that the gamblers such as the Little Champ were the real villians in this fiasco. Commisky was also a cheap skate who payed his talented players peanuts and then expected them to win pennants. The victims were the ball players who all expected were rich (they were not) and got duped by a bunch of fast talking gamblers. Shoeless Joe Jackson comes across as a decent man trying to make a go of it in life. These talented people were out matched by more brilliant eastern money men.
This is a great read about the All American pastime. I came away with true respect for the ball players, although not the baseball clubs. This is a tragic story of eight talented players being out hustled by gamblers.
ocho men out........2006-03-13
Eliot Asinof does a very good job at retelling this famous world series game. This book grabs you and you stay hooked from the first word to the last, hearing about the day that the White Sox fixed the 1919 World Series. I highly recommend this great capture of the White Sox scandal game, especially for all of the baseball fans, and anyone who is not interested in baseball. It is a great read. This fixation of baseball came to be known "The Black Sox Scandal".
Chick Gandil a tough 31 year old man started this scandal and brought in other baseball team members including; Claude "Lefty" Williams, Fred McMullin, Charles "Swede" Riseberg, "Shoeless Joe Jackson, Oscar "Happy" Felsch, George "Buck" Weaver, and Eddie Cicotte. These 8 baseball players made history in the name of baseball, when getting involved with gamblers. With money on the line all of these baseball players are willing to try anything. The pressure and the pain of this baseball game is very interesting. Did they really think they could get away with this? What were they thinking? Well in this story Asinof tells all that and more. By explaining each intense moment to the next you stay hooked.
Required Reading.......2006-03-09
I teach a course to high school seniors called Baseball in American Society. (2nd semester). We use Eight Men Out as one of the required readings. Comparing controversies that have happened in baseball over the years is part of the syllabus and the 1919 Black Sox scandal fits right in.
Great Book for the Baseball Fan - Everything you wanted to know about The Black Sox Scandal........2005-12-24
I just completed "Eight Men Out" and I thought that the book was very interesting because of its vivid description of the "Black Sox Scandal." Instead of dealing with the use of steroids, early 20th century baseball battled constant corruption through the influence of gambling. "Eight Men Out" describes how gamblers, not the ball players were the most important figures in professional baseball, and how difficult it was for the typical fan to realize their fixes and for professional baseball to eliminate their influence. Today's baseball fans should definitely skim through the book. If you are looking for a sports book to read, and you are particularly interested in baseball, you should try this book because it is a phenomenal story of one of the most important eras in baseball history. Overall, it's a quick read and very informative. I would also suggest "Boys of Summer," and "Ball Four" if you are interested in reading about baseball.
Time to Bury the Black Sox.......2005-10-28
Now White Sox is World Series Champions again, it's time to bury the eight men forever from our memories.

A Taste of Baseballs' Tainted History.......2007-09-18
Jose Canseco. Barry Bonds. Jason Giambi. Human growth hormone. The cream and the clear. Steroids. The saddest part about baseball today is that these are the words we think of. However, the past is not free from scandal, and I'm not just talking about the introduction and proliferation of "greenies."
When the 1919 World Series was fixed by eight (arguably seven) members of the Chicago White Sox, the face of baseball changed forever. While it remained America's pastime, an inherent skepticism took hold. This was epitomized by the famous "say it ain't so, Joe" confrontation between "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (the arguably innocent of the eight) and not just any fan, but a child.
Eliot Asinof has done a wonderful job of reminding us that baseball is not a sport newly tainted by strikes and drugs. All the major players are documented. The owner, Charles Comiskey, whose tight pocket book can be partially blamed for the scandal and who tried to cover it up. Baseball's first commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis prosecuted the guilty the best way he knew how and set a precedent that baseball followed into the late '80s with the lifetime ban of Pete Rose (eight years after Eight Men Out was published in 1981). "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, to his deathbed, recanted his confession, calling it something contrived, and professed his innocence. And then there were the gamblers: Joe Sullivan, the contact man; Abe Attell, the man who manipulated the whole thing as a middleman without the money; and Arnold Rothstein, the money behind the debacle. Asinof, despite a lack of modern "forensic" evidence, such as phone taps, followed the information back to the guilty parties. As Asinof relays, this is one of the shames, one of the great failures of the American judicial system following the Black Sox scandal.
What Asinof has accomplished with this story, this true epic, is to remind us that todays era is not that only tainted one in baseball's illustrious history. It reminds us that as long as men have been paid to play a childrens' game they have wanted more and owners have wanted to give them less. In the end, Asinof reminds us that we make it possible for players to make $25 million a year. And we also make it possible for someone like Mark McGwire or Barry Bonds or Jason Giambi to become a "hero." While Asinof does not make me feel guilty, he makes me take pause and wonder how much of baseball's dramatic fall has been a product of the absolute corruption of American culture as opposed to the absolute corruption of a select few individuals.
The Black Sox.......2000-07-04
A great book that shows what led to this infamous scandel with the 8 White Sox ballplayers. Not only will baseball fans want to read this book but anyone who likes to read. It also makes you wonder if throwing games is still going on today.
Revealing.......2000-06-16
The scandal of the 1919 Black Sox is probably the most disilluisioning chapter in the history of baseball. Asinof captured the feeling of America and its reaction to the scandal on and off field. The story is told accurately and with great insight. "Shoeless" Joe was a wonderful player who made bad decisions. He can be both admired and loathed by fans who now know that he wasn't completely innocent as the Sox threw the Worl d Series. It shows how baseball perserviered throught the gambling. Baseball tradition has kept the game alive through many adverse situtations and when gathered together make the history of baseball very rich. A must read for ALL baseball historians and fans.
The scandal comes to life........2000-04-16
The year 1919. The city is Chicago. Eight men enter the room of "Sleepy" Bill Burns and conspire to fix the World Series. The money was coming from Arnold Rothstein or "AR" to his friends. Eight men were about to rock the foundations of baseball for greed and the hatred of Charles Comiskey - or was there another story?
Asinoff recounts the months leading to, the days during and the years after the 1919 World Series with amazing detail and clarity. His story is told and as you listen you'll think you are actually there. This audio book is by far much better than the movie.
What you get is 8; count them 8, how ironic, tapes that weave a story of deceit, corruption, and conspiracy on both sides of the law. From Joe Jackson and Eddie Cicotte to Lefty Williams, Chick Ghandl, Buck Weaver, Happy Felsch and Swede Risberg the tragedy is unraveled.
The recording was a true pleasure and the actual use of transcripts, reports and other material adds major credibility to the exposing of baseball worst nightmare. Asinoff is to be commended on this first rate work and baseball needs more men like him. A real standout performance!
This review refers to the audio book version.
Book Description
What does it mean when a fictional hero takes a journey?. Shares a meal? Gets drenched in a sudden rain shower? Often, there is much more going on in a novel or poem than is readily visible on the surface—a symbol, maybe, that remains elusive, or an unexpected twist on a character—and there's that sneaking suspicion that the deeper meaning of a literary text keeps escaping you.
In this practical and amusing guide to literature, Thomas C. Foster shows how easy and gratifying it is to unlock those hidden truths, and to discover a world where a road leads to a quest; a shared meal may signify a communion; and rain, whether cleansing or destructive, is never just rain. Ranging from major themes to literary models, narrative devices, and form, How to Read Literature Like a Professor is the perfect companion for making your reading experience more enriching, satisfying, and fun.
Customer Reviews:
Every High School Lit Teacher Should Read this Book!.......2007-08-16
Heard about this book in an AP class for teachers. They were right. It's great. I'd love to require my high school students get a copy-but funding would be a problem.
A book by any other name.......2007-08-06
After reading a certain review here I felt I must post. This book is not for English majors only. This book will open a reader's eyes to what is hidden within leterature. It gave me fresh insight into the background and symbols I had not even thought of before and allowed my reading to be what it was meant to be. Yes, Mr. Foster does enjoy refering to his favorite authors for clarity on a theme or idea he has presented, however, this is not a flaw but a preperation to lay a solid foundation in what the reader will need for their goal. The beauty of this book is in its goal. This book was written so that we can learn with our eyes open and our minds ready to recieve whatever an author might throw at us. I had my "ticket punched" in a lit. class but I got more from this book. Thanks Professor Foster.
Great book for anyone.......2007-05-12
I found this book in a catalog that was sent to me at work. As I researched more about this book, I found out that many teachers across the country have thier students read it. As a high school English teacher and someone who rushed through thier English lit. degree, I was instatnly hooked. During our state testing, I have been reading it and chuckled out loud at it. It is well written and funny. It is hard to believe that you are actually learning as you read.
All literature should be taught this way.......2007-03-25
This book asks of literature, "What's going on here?" and of authors, "How did you do that?" Then it supplies clear, understandable answers that surprise and enlighten and delight.
Entertaining introduction..........2007-01-16
An easy read and a nice introduction (or reminder to those who've been out of college a while) what goes into reading and appreciating great literature. People in college or who remember their college English lit classes vividly will find it a bit too beginner-level. I also thought the prose sometimes was a bit too informal and chatty. Still, I liked it.

Adventure Tale Of The Heart.......2002-12-21
The apparent premise of the story is that there is a tribe of aliens from outer space living on top of Devil's Mountain, in Transylvania County, North Carolina. If you have any sense at all you won't go up there, especially during the full moon, because--well--children have disappeared up there and never been seen again. Well, of course you don't have enough sense to stay out of there, even though you know better, if the girl you're sweet on is going up there with another boy, older and more aggressive and--you're going up there, wanted or not. And so begins a long, rambling adventure that takes you through many dangerous and frightening situations, and introduces you to many wise and helpful friends.
How does it end? I won't tell you, of course. But I can say that the story isn't really about space aliens. It's about courage and character and loyalty, and about the wisdom of old timers, and about how you become a grownup. The book has its flaws. It rambles a bit. It gets overly sentimental at times. It is more like story-telling than the usual novel. Still it's enjoyable and worth reading.
If you are or ever have been a kid, you will love this story and you will learn something about yourself as you read it. I know I did! Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.
I Knew You When You Did That.......2002-11-03
I love this book! Why, because it is not just a science fiction novel. If you were to know the main charters of this story you would know that they really exist and are probably aliens. Just Kidding!! Just the story buy it's self is fun and entertaining, but if you knew the charters, there is at least three other stories mixed in this story about friends against aliens and bad guys. Of course my mind fills in the blanks. Hopefully some day Patrick Bone will write a novel that will tell the stories of his life and that of John and Gary. Only time will tell. Patrick's background is well known if you take the time to find out about him. Just his life by it's self would make and outstanding novel. Of course most of our lives would probably do the same thing. And, no I have never dressed up like a girl. But I did have a red motor scooter.
If any of my comments above have intrigued you, get the book. It is a lot of fun to read and is like the 1950s alien movies. I think I may have given away my age. It has hate, fear, love, and friendship and demonstrates how friendships can endure for over 40 years even when we go our separate ways.
enjoyable coming of age science fiction tale.......2002-05-05
In the Appalachian Mountains, in a Transylvania County here is a legend that very few people today believe is based on a truth. The myth states that parents shouldn't let their children out at night, especially on the eve of the full moon.
In 1956, high school senior Chester believes there are vampiric space aliens up on Devil's Mountain and doesn't intend to be there after dark. His plans change when fellow senior John Croshaw goads him and Hannah Jane Goins into exploring the mountain on the night of the full moon. When they get near the summit of the mountain, Chester is separated from his two companions and sees the space aliens capture his friend Hannah Jane and realize John is one of them. The high school senior manages to escape but vows to return and free his friend and the other children, who the aliens captured, some of them dating back to the Civil War.
Patrick Bone has crafted a young adult novel that will also be enjoyed by older readers whose salad days included Robert Heinlein and Andre Norton. The story line is fun, as some of the MELUNGEON WINTER CAST return. The ALIENS OF TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY is an enjoyable coming of age tale that shows how one determined person regardless of age can make a difference.
