Comprehensive book detailing buying/selling of businesses.......1999-07-12

Very comprehensive book addressing almost every situation that should be considered during a buy/sell transaction. Good overview of tax ramifications. Good sample language for all aspects of an agreement for the stock or asset sale of a business. Somewhat slanted toward the buyers' role, but not so much as to be unuseful to the seller. For the attorneys, CPA, etc., this is a good reference source. For the business owner who likes to look over his expert's shoulder, this is the book!

The book discusses the preliminary results of the COBE satellite (Cosmic Background Explorer). First, the three instruments on board COBE: FIRAS (Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer), DMR (Differential Microwave Radiometer), DIRBE (Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment), and the data acquisition and reduction techniques, are described by members of the COBE Science Team. Most of the subsequent material is devoted to the cosmological implications of the observations. The topics covered are: the Early universe: Planck era, inflation, dark matter, relic particles, etc. large and small scale anisotropies of the CMB large-scale structures and galaxy formation infrared to submillimetre background dust in galaxies and quasars instrumentation and observation techniques Scientists of different communities, from particle physics to observational astrophysics, have been enabled to share their convictions and their doubts about the `excess of perfection' of the relic Cosmic Radiation. Only such opportunities will allow us to make progress in the understanding of our Universe.

New observations are presented from the Sun, Asteroids, outflow sources, ionization fronts and cold molecular clouds; analyses of protostellar and circumstellar disks, winds, shells and mass loss; high resolution continuum and spectral line maps of galactic cloud regions and of extragalactic structures; dust studies of active galactic nucleii, colliding galaxies, ellipticals, spirals and irregulars; spectral curves, turnover points and flaring of quasars and blazars; measurements and search for anisotropy in the background radiation. Also included are several contributions on new telescopes, instrumentation and receiver design and fabrication techniques, particularly for SIS instruments.

Solid book; packed with practicalities.......2006-11-18

This was the first book on powerboating I found in the bookstore. The type of boat he favors is much much too expensive to operate for someone of my limited means, though such craft can also be used as world cruisers if you are rich enough and don't mind stopping often for fuel and repairs. He seems to prefer the full on paranoia and modern comfort approach: boats that go fast and have all modern ameneties (air conditioning hot and cold running, satellite TV, radar, sonar, etc etc etc). Beyond this,he does explain the different powerboat arrangements possible, and gives instructions on everything from selecting specific doodads, to navigation, to legality in foreign waters, to boat handling, to radio management to tying knots. Good stuff: if I get a boat, this book goes with it. Amusingly, looking at the boats available in the dealerships, and in use in the marinas, his style seems to be the most popular one for power cruisers. Possibly because it represents a compromise between long range cruising ability, and weekend cruising ability.

enlightening.......2006-11-03

I am one builduing a passagemaking vessel and this boat helped me a lot in reviewing some basic concepts. These concepts are in constant change and of course new gimmicks are always coming around but the basics are always the same.

Finally what I've been looking for in a book!!!!.......2004-09-07

Sid Stapleton has written the book I've been looking for. Sid goes through all the required equipment you need for off coastal cruising and doesn't hestitate to give his opinion. He doesn't forget a thing. Everything from negoiating for the best vessel to what equipment is overkill.
This book is definately not for people looking to stay near coastal and cruise on weekends. This book lays out everything you would need to live on a powerboat for weeks, if not, months at a time. Besides Sid's excellent experience, he is a great writer and made this book so addictive I couldn't put it down. For those out there curious on what it takes to cruise continent to continent or what kind of budget it takes to live the ultimate lifestyle, read this book. A+!!

The book is a must have as an engagement present or you will miss out on helpful timesaving ideas. I would put pockets at the beginning of the sections to keep vendor information and then I wouldn't have to have a planner too. That would truly make it a everything organizer, hence the 4 stars.

This is the best organizer I have found. Full of the most recent suggestions for a successful wedding. Keeps you moving on track. It is a nice size for mobility as you schedule, pay and reserve for the wedding.

Outdated and negative.......2006-06-18

I thought this book had completely the wrong attitude to wedding planning - it's written in a way that's meant to make you panic and it really talks down to you. Consider this extract from page 16:

'...it is time to settle down, put your nose to the grindstone and, like a field general, start mapping out a battle plan for your wedding. Make no mistake about it, planning your wedding will be a battle: a battle to get everything as coordinated, beautiful, on time, and generally perfect as your most important day should be.'

I'm sorry but how many brides want to be compared to a 'field general'? A princess maybe, but a field general about to go into battle...? I can't think of anything worse!

Apart from all the words meant to panic you, it also seems outdated with no advice on the different photography styles currently available and nothing on the kind of technology and equipment your videographer should be using. Sorry but most brides need a little more guidance than 'the videographer should have up-to-date, quality equipment' (page 214).

On the upside I do have to admit that some of the checklists were practical and well thought through. However the book as a whole had few ideas on how to make your wedding unique and was therefore quite uninspiring, and put a bit of a downer on the whole idea of wedding organising.

Planning your wedding is a time that should be happy, fun and full of hope for the future, not scary and panicked as this book presents it.

Only read this book if you have to.......2006-02-04

In the book "Hiding Mr. McMulty" Rass Whitley and his family face the biggest obstacle in their life when a storm hits. A nearby river then floods and they loose almost everything including their house. So the landlord Nert kicks Mr. McMulty out of his house so that the Whitleys can live there. Rass does not like this idea and yells and cusses Nert out. Mr. McMulty does not like this decision either so he cuts the head off of Nerts prized bull. Rass's father thinks it was Rass because of the previous day when Rass yelled at Nert.

Hiding Mr. McMulty.......2002-03-05

The book is about a black man that has been running away from the KKK. The KKK finds him and burns his house down. A white man Mr. McMulty tries to help them by letting them stay in his house. But it doesn't work out because the KKK burns his whole farm down. So they took off, and they wanted to come up with a plan to stop the KKK from killing anymore people.

Critique from a 13-year-old.......2000-02-17

I found the book Hiding Mr. McMulty very enjoyable. The author, Bernice Rabe, described everything beautifully; for example, "Old leaves, which had been crisp and crackling enough to wake the dead last fall, were now matted to the ground and felt spongy to the foot." Many a time I got nervous or anxious and shivered in my seat. Rass lets out his emotions and the reader can feel them with him. This is why I feel that this book is realistic. The book takes pace a few years after the civil war. The Ku Klux Klan is active. The story tells of some of the deeds that they perform such as tarring and feathering. It is tells of the injustice that was around because of the color of your skin. Mr.McMulty was being chased for hanging a prize calf. Though this was wrong I don't think a white man would have been searched for as much as he. I also don't think that Nert, Mr. McMulty and the Whitley's landowner, would have kicked Mr. McMulty out of his house if wasn't African-American. In the book blacks are also not allowed in court, preventing Mr. McMulty from righting Nert's wrongs in a court of law. Rass Kindly hides Mr. McMulty from the law and encounters a few close calls. This book is suspenseful and I found it quite exciting. I would recommend this book to those interested in civil rights.
