Book Description
This is one of the first books on the subject of counseling clients via e-mail. The author has taken the area of counseling practice and systematically reviewed relevant counseling theory, counseling ethics, and counseling skills in relation to Web counseling. The objective is to provide a practical text and guide for career counselors in online service. This book will be of interest to professionals in the field of career counseling, to graduate students of counseling, and to human resource management and outplacement professionals.
The book begins by articulating issues in the debate on Internet counseling, giving particular attention to counselor concerns about ethical issues and the client-counselor relationship. Next, it details the 11 necessary competencies and skills for counseling professionals in general, translating these for use online, including the role of assessment, various electronic interventions, and the pros and cons of career counseling via the Web. Specific guidelines are offered for career counselors to implement online. The book concludes with suggestions for continuing research, as well as recommendations for counselor supervision, preparation, and training models as the field makes a paradigm shift. Framed into 10 chapters, 35 question and answer examples are interspersed to bring to life the actual experiences, themes, issues, and questions presented by a global clientele regarding their career development. Each chapter closes with discussion questions for practitioners to consider themselves or discuss with students in classroom and practice settings.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and informative, if somewhat over-anecdotal and self-indulgent.......2006-12-06
There is a dearth of resources on career counselling online, and this book is one of the few that fills the gap. It offers a good defence of cybercounselling, and takes the time to consider what cybercounselling actually means, as well as distinguishing between 'career planning' and 'career counselling' and arguing for the latter as a needed online service.
The author's own history as an online counsellor - a role she more or less stumbled into - is used throughout to reinforce and provide evidence for her arguments. The examples she produces here are certainly useful and do provide illustration of certain points. However, it makes the coverage of the subject very anecdotal and lacking in academic rigour. One person's experience does not a research study make.
To a degree, Boer is not attempting to offer a definitive study of online counselling; she states in her introduction that she's using her experience to illustrate the possibilities and the way in which online counselling fits with ethical guidelines and professional competencies. However, on the book's cover the claim is made that it presents 'an emerging model for trusting and responding to online clients' - and it does not quite go that far. Nevertheless, for anyone wanting to know more about how online counselling works in practice it is a useful read.
However, what is very irritating and unprofessional (and it's taken my rating down from a 4 to a 3) is the amount of errors in the text. This book needed a good proof-reader. There are numerous punctuation errors; Boer does not know how to use the comma. There are typos. There is carelessness: the states as opposed to the States on one occasion, missing letters, missing words. This does not reflect very well on Boer as an effective online communicator, and in fact I did notice that some of her email responses to clients, quoted in the text, equally contained spelling and grammatical errors. If this is how she writes to international clients whose first language is not English, it isn't setting a very good example.
Overall, though, I can recommend this book as a good introduction to the possible where cybercounselling is concerned, as long as readers don't expect it to be any more than it is.

Book Description
What is creativity? Is it a force? An innate capacity? A planned process? Who has access to creativity and who does not? Ruth Richards, leading creativity researcher and editor of Everyday Creativity argues against the notion of exclusive creativity, saying instead that creativity a universal ability, accessible to everyone. An innate ability with the capacity to make our lives happier and more fulfilling, an ability that unfortunately for most of us falls by the wayside or is regrettably underutilized and underdeveloped. Richards states, "Everyday creativity is about everyone, throughout our lives, and fundamental to our very survival. It is how we find our lost child, get enough to eat, make our way in a new place and culture...With our everyday creativity, we adapt flexibly, we improvise, we try different options, whether we are raising a child, counseling a friend, fixing our home, or planning a fundraising event."
To illustrate this, Richards gathers together in Everyday Creativity a provocative collection of essays; an interdisciplinary group of eminent thinkers and writers who offer their thoughts on how embracing creativity--tapping into the "originality of everyday life"--can lead to improved physical and mental health, to new ways of thinking, of experiencing the world and ourselves. They show how creativity can refine our views of human nature at an individual and societal level and, ultimately, change our paradigms for survival--and for flourishing--in a world fraught with urgent challenges. Neither a dry treatise nor a manual, this anthology draws upon the latest research in the area to present a lively examination of the phenomenon and process of everyday creativity and its far-reaching ramifications for self, culture, history, society, politics, and humankind's future.

The importance of creativity.......2007-10-08
To solve our age-old problems we need new ways of thinking. Ruth Richard's very valuable collection of authors on everyday creativity show us that creativity is a force that is alive, fluid and interconnected with everything in the universe--it is truly revolutionary. It shows us new ways to think about the world and create a healthy future.

If You Want to Be Creative.......2007-08-08
An outstanding book. It has given me new insights into creativity. Having read many books on the subject, I feel its consideration of Asian as well as Western ideas about creativity supplies a fresh perspective. It also taught me practical ways of improving my own work, an almost-finished historical novel about British India, the field of my Harvard Ph.D. in history.
Which brings me to another strength of the book: It is accessible to a non-psychologist like myself. It has a minimum of jargon, a fine bibliography, and lucid style.

Customer Reviews:
Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook by Sheila Mills.......2007-09-29
Interesting, informative, and very helpful. Looking forward to more of the same in cookbooks.
Not just for outdoor cooking!.......2006-11-11
This book contains fabulous recipes that can be made at home as well without using a Dutch oven. It is filled with ideas that are simple and fast to prepare with easily obtained ingredients. The author uses recipes that have been tried and refined by people whose business it is to entertain and please hungry folks with delicious food. These recipes are a notch above most one-pot recipes I have encountered. I purchased one as a gift for my outdoor-loving friends and ended up ordering one for my home as well.
Too Complicated.......2006-09-27
All the recipes are pretty advanced (and expensive). I'd like to see more easy dishes that don't take 5 hours to prepare and $100 per oven.
The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook .......2005-10-20
This is well organized and appealing book for outdoor cooker. If you have cast iron dutch oven, you have to have this one.
Dominic Lee from Seoul, Korea.
Great receipes, assumes basic skill however.......2005-09-29
I have been collecting and trying dutch oven receipes for some time and found the content of the Outdoor Dutch Oven book very solid. Some receipes are too involved for outdoor trips, but would work just fine in the kitchen. I originally checked the book out of the library, but was so impressed I thought it deserved to be purchased. The comments regarding no instruction on dutch oven skills are valid. You'll want another resource for that.
Customer Reviews:
A Treat For the Taste Buds.......2007-01-04
The art of dutch oven cooking has been dying for a long time. What my mother taught me was very little and I do remember great food from that cooking. I just wanted to bring back that comfortable feeling once again and to enjoy the basically hassle free cooking again. There is so much you can do with a dutch oven and I'm glad that they are still making them. I hope that there will be an increase in cooking the old fashioned, healthy way.
It was the first.......2001-02-12
Today, cooking with a Dutch oven is all the rage and this book started it all. Every Dutch oven cook should own this book, no matter how many other Dutch oven cookbooks they own. Don Holm had the guts to write the first book in modern times (that being in the 1960s) about cooking with a Dutch oven. In fact, when Holm contacted Lodge about purchasing some ovens to perfect his recipes, he was informed that Dutch ovens were no longer in production. The rebound of this once essential and now popular way to cook in the great outdoors can be attributed to one person and one book, the Old Fashioned Dutch Oven Cookbook, by Don Holm. Sure, other authors have now jumped on the band wagon and written their take on the cast iron cooking pot, just as there are now more books than ever about vegetable gardening and fly fishing. But Holm was the first, and this book was the inspiration for many of the others. The author goes beyond what most readers would expect from a cookbook. He takes that extra step and provides a bundle of outdoor stories that outdoor lovers, and others, will enjoy. And, besides a history of the Dutch oven and the stories, Holm provides many useful recipes for beginners and experienced cooks as well. This book is a good study for all serious Dutch oven cooks and beginners as well. Once again, every Dutch oven cook should own this book, no matter how many other Dutch oven cookbooks they own.
A lot of ego stroking, no substance.......1999-11-07
the author spends a lot of my time telling me how good he is as a writer, and then I find many of his recipes do not work properly, or are so vague they could lead to disaster. there are just too many good Dutch Oven cookbooks today to have to put up with this author.
An entertaining book about dutch ovens, history and recipies.......1999-06-17
This was the first book I ever read abour dutch ovens. It provides a good sense of its history, care, etc.as well as a wide variety of recipies. The chapter on sourdough cooking started me on a whole new adventure. Pleasant reading.

Customer Reviews:
Best cook book I've owned.......2002-09-17
I love this cook book. It has helped me learn how to use a dutch oven and has the best recipes I have used. I use this cookbook almost daily in my own oven and everything I have tried is delicious! I would recomend this cookbook to anyone who is looking to dutch oven. It will be the only cookbook you will need from now on. The only other I have found like it is book 2. They are the best cookbooks I have used!
Not for beginners.......2001-07-12
While full of recipes, this book is very disorganized. For example, Beef Stew (2 different versions) appears several pages apart. Chicken soup, Chicken Supreme Soup; and a Chicken and Egg soup, while ALL are chicken soups, they are separated by several pages as well. Instructions like "dump in 1 pkg yellow cake mix" doesn't say if you are to pour in the dry cake mix or if you are to mix it into a batter form before putting it in. Somehow I think things like that would make a difference. Even the instruction for popcorn has the phrase "...put in popcorn, not too much!!" How are we to know how much is too much?
Maybe with more experience, this would all make sense. That's what I'm looking for in a book. To answer my questions, not leave me guessing. This is not a book for a first time outdoor chef.
Informative and helpful.......2001-04-14
I loved this book! The tips section alone was worth the price of the book, especially for a novice like myself. These people really know what they are talking about. I love having a book that can lays open or fold back - smart idea to have it spiral bound. Its good to know I can try the receipes at home and know the ones I like best before we go camping. I can't wait to try the primitive cooking - so few things can be cooked over an open fire. All in all a great and valuable book.
Disappointing!.......2000-08-02
I was very disappointed in this book. I bought it to learn how to use my new cast iron dutch oven and learned very little that wasn't included with the oven itself. Many of the recipes were hard to follow -- possibly because of the poor grammar and punctuation throughout the book. It's obviously a "home published" book that appears to have been reproduced on an Office Max copy machine. There are far better books out there; I wish I'd bought one of them first.
Excellant Cast Iron Primer & Outdoors Cookbook.......2000-03-28
A good cook book and meal-planner for the novice dutch oven and/or camping cook. Includes many tips for the beginner in outdoors dutch oven cooking. However, needs explanation of some of the ingredients, 'Rhodes Rolls'? 'Texas Bake & Serves'? These are apparently regional pre-made frozen-bread items, available only out West. Also the recipe for chocolate cake on pg 130 doesn't include any chocolate/cocoa? Both of the above are very minor complaints (whatever happened to adventures in cooking) about an otherwise excellant outdoors cook book.
Customer Reviews:
World Championship Dutch Oven Cooking.......2000-06-11
I have several Dutch Oven cookbooks and am happy to include this one in my collection. Although it is not as extensive as some, that is its only drawback. It has a well rounded variety of recipes for anyone who is just learning the art of dutch oven cooking or for those with years of experience. It is always a pleasure to learn new recipes for use either while camping, or even in my own backyard. Readers will find this book extremely helpful.
