Customer Reviews:
short and practical.......2001-12-08
This book emphasizes the importance of developing learning organizations and then proceeds to outline a 3 step approach to actually doing so in your own organization. The chapters are very specific and lay out the process so just about anyone could analyze where their organization is to start (the first step), where they'd like to go and how to get there.
For knowledge officers, this book is a must read: it's easy to follow and clearly laid out with enough charts and examples to lead you through the process.
Learning Practices: Assessment and Action for Organizational.......2001-02-10
How to build the learning capability of an organization? Some researchers and consultants describe in details how learning organization should work. They advise to shape an organization according to their prescription. Approach presented by Dr. Anthony DiBella in his book is different. The first step in developing learning capability of a team or a company is to assess how it learns. After that we will be able to describe our "best possible" learning profile of the organization and start to make changes. This approach is rooted in OD theory and consulting practice. I would recommend this book becouse it is written for practitioners. DiBella presents very usuful tools to diagnose learning of a team, organization unit or even entire firm or institution. He also describes what to do when we have done our assessment. This book is of high value for people who would like to build or strengten the learning capabilities of an organization or a team.

Book Description
The
Second Edition of this highly successful course reader provides a comprehensive, contemporary, and critical review of the key issues in strategic human resource management. The book draws upon the work of some of the most influential and insightful writers on the subject of the strategic management of people in organizations. Through a series of carefully edited articles, students can explore current thinking on topics as diverse as performance, pay, process reengineering, structure, ethics, culture, change and leadership.
This volume moves beyond strategic human resource management from the perspective of the policy setter. The book informs but also questions and, while recognizing the legitimacy and importance of management perspectives, also captures the experience of workers on the receiving end of strategic initiatives. Students will be encouraged to consider core issues and difficult questions, such as:
- How should employees respond to the missionary zeal of their employers?
- How can we explain the increasing influence of gangmasters?
- What are the effects of management training on the identities of managers?
- Has strategic HRM been transformed from a model of commitment to one of exploitation?
Strategic Human Resource Management: Theory and Practice has been designed to meet the needs of course teaching at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is an invaluable text that will help define the complex agenda of human resource management, strategy, and organizations for students.

Description:
This paper looks at the 'science' and 'practice' of human resource management in small firms. While there is growing evidence that the practice of human resource management in small firms is characterized by informality, there is less evidence about the science, or explaining why this is the case. We look to writing on strategic human resource management, which has at its heart the resource based view of the firm, for possibilities offered to understanding the science of human resource management in small firms.

Book Description
Agroforestry in Sustainable Agricultural Systems examines the environmental and social conditions that affect the roles and performance of trees in field- and forest-based agricultural production systems. Various types of ecological settings for agroforestry are analyzed within temperate and tropical regions. The roles of soil, water, light, nutrient and pest management in mixed, annual, woody perennial and livestock systems are discussed. Important new case studies from around the world offer innovative strategies that have been used successfully in raising forests and tree products on a sustainable basis for commercial harvesting and for providing other environmental services in land conservation and watershed management.

Customer Reviews:
A Look Inside a Planetarium for the 21st Century.......2001-08-30
In the late 1990s, New York's beloved (but aged and failing) Hayden Planetarium was torn down to make way for what designers promised would be a state-of-the-art showcase of Earth & space science. At first, skeptical New Yorkers weren't sure if the controversial design would fit in with the surrounding residential neighborhood... but when the construction was complete, they gazed in awe at the marvelous steel and glass cube of the new Rose Center for Earth and Space, which featured a multi-story Planetarium that seemed to hover in midair within the structure.
Pick up this book if you'd like to see how New York's spectacular new planetarium came into being. Inside, you'll find beautiful full-color photos of the Rose Center as it appeared during construction and as it stands today, and you'll learn about the new technologies used to create its many hi-tech exhibits.
As an added bonus, the book provides an overview of some of the recent discoveries and hot topics in modern earth and space science... as you'll see, when it comes to learning about our planet and our universe, we've come a long way!
I highly recommend this book to space science fans, as well as architecture buffs. It's a great look inside an exciting new facility that's sure to delight visitors for decades to come!

Book Description
A concise, informative book on "the sport of the pioneers". Knife Throwing includes beginning and advanced throwing techniques and covers everything from home practice to hunting methods with accurate instructions. Readers will learn how to hurl hatches, tomahawks, the Gurkha Kukri, Bowies, and other knives.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to read and it works!.......2007-07-14
I read the first few short chapters, went outside and started throwing knives! It was that easy! If you can read, and can throw a baseball then you can utilize this book.
Good for basics.......2007-01-24
Schools you on the ins and outs when you're starting out. Great kids and beginners book.
A joke of a book.......2007-01-17
Interested in this book? Don't be, let me sum it up, use some wood as a target, walk back ten paces, and throw the knife until it sticks. Once it does, keep on practicing. That really is it! A total waste of money.
Good guide, the rest is up to you...........1999-11-26
Very good, short, easy to read book. Mc Evoy shows you the techniques for throwing a knife accurately. Reading this book will point you in the right direction. Afterwards practice, and lots of it is what is going to make you good at it. The only reason i deducted one star is because since the book was written in 1973 I believe, some of the info on Knife throwing affiliations, etc.. is outdated. Nonetheless, good, concise, and informative book.
Practice!Practice!Practice!.......1999-07-27
Not only does this book explain the snap , you must have to actually stick a knife and show all the fundamentals and learning secrets, but it also goes in depth for the intermediate thrower on trick throws and more advanced techniques and illustrates professionals and what they use and what they inspire. A great book for any stage of the fascinating art of knife throwing!

Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Wisdom & Reflections!.......2003-05-03
There are 79 fascinating original essays in this collection that were gathered together over a period of ten years from public figures who give out their advice, wisdom, and reflections on life. The book is chuck full of insight from people like Quentin Crisp, Bette Davis, William S. Burroughs, Katharine Hepburn, and others. Joe Dallesandro, star of Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey's late 60's cult films, "Flesh, Trash, and Heat" offers some excellent advice in his essay. He states, "The negative aspect of beauty in our culture is our obsession with it - like when a person becomes bulimic or anorexic because they want to look like a celebrity or a model in a magazine. He further states, "Beauty is fun, it has its place, but don't mistake it for self-worth". In other words we need more than beauty and good looks to feel fulfilled. We need to look inside ourselves and find inner beauty and true meaning in our lives. Once in a while we should forget the "me" and lend a helping hand to others who need us. Good advice.
You may not agree with all of the advice being dished out in these essays, but it is a fascinating look into the lives of these famous and not so famous individuals, and the way they think. It will also make you think a little more deeply yourself, and provide you with plenty of interesting advice to digest and compare with your own beliefs. Harmon has done an excellent job in bringing these people's thoughts into our own thoughts. This is a book I certainly will read again!
Joe Hanssen
Take my advice and check out this book.......2002-09-14
This book is filled with advice from a wide array of writers, artists, philosophers, photographers, poets, critics and even a sexologist.
I came across this book by fluke one day, and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding books I have ever read. After reading this, I felt uplifted, inspired and viewed success from a new angle. If you are a person obsessed with chasing the almighty dollar, I would not recommend this book. It only gives advice on the things in life that truly matter.
This book was created in order to give advice to the young, the people who are just starting out. But yet, I believe it to still be a useful tool to those growing older, for a person is never too old to learn or to grow. If you want things to change, it is best to start with yourself.
I will leave you with some sample pieces of advice given by the writer Lucius Shepard:
"Just because you're living on the edge doesn't mean that you don't have to do the right thing.
Run like hell if you have to, but try not to hurt anyone.
If you get ahead of the game, let some of your money loose in the world where it can do some good, and chances are that good thing will come back around.
Make sure you know whomever you have to trust.
Take the cash and flush the credit cards."
Much food for thought.......2002-07-23
In the unbelievably commercialized world we live in, this book comes as a breath of fresh air telling college graduates how they should think as they head out into the world. Since most of the advisors are artists, their advice isn't likely to help you make a lot of money! However, I firmly believe that artists hold the key to the future because they alone refuse to buy into the dominant cultural/political system (in this case, mindless consumerism) and seek ways of framing new modes of thought. For this reason, this book should be read by anyone discontented with sheer consumerism and searching for a better way to live. What's especially telling is how many of these artists suggest that we stop watching TV!
More garbage than good advice........2002-05-31
I was very dissappointed with this book. I had hoped to get pearls of wisdom that I could share with graduates. There were a few gems but it was like looking for diamonds in a swamp.
Not as Dorky as It Sounds.......2002-05-26
because of the colorful list of contributors, folks like Richard Powers, Tom Robbins, William S. Burroughs, Alexander Theroux, Judith Butler, William T. Vollmann, Robert Creeley, Ken Kesey, R. U. Sirius, et al.--not your usual advice-mongerers. An especially appealing feature is the young photographs of many of the contributors: Camille Paglia at her first job, Quentin Crisp as a young exquisite, and a drop-dead glamorous photo of philosopher Martha Nussbaum as a college freshman that will make you weak in the knees. And the advice is more frank and useful than you'll find in most books of this ilk.

Book Description
Sixteen-year-old Neal Thackery is trying really hard to follow the logical (but boring) path laid out for him by his mother, his longtime girlfriend, Emily, his guidance counselor, his boss. . . He punches the time clock and does his best to follow directions, but even those who want him to pursue a program of school, job, marriage, and home ownership seem to agree—he may just be too much of a klutz to pull it off. As if Neal doesn't have enough problems, he must turn something in for his documentary film class, and so far all he has are his wild imagination and some strange, dreamlike images of his dead father. But as Neal works on the film, and works through some tough breaks, his past and future begin to make more sense—to him and to everyone. Paul Many's rare combination of irreverent humor and razor-sharp insight into the daily ups and downs of teenage life gives My Life, Take Two a clarity and honesty that readers will recognize and connect with.
Customer Reviews:
Coming to terms with death.......2007-02-07
Neal's longtime girlfriend Emily is right. They are stuck in a rut. What she really means is that HE is stuck in a rut, which is also right. His father died years and years ago, but Neal still can't seem to get over it. Nothing really matters much to him, and he floats through his life, disconnected. He takes jobs and is soon fired from them, and his mother worries that he will be like his father, only doing what he feels like doing instead of taking responsibility for things that need to be done.
Emily has her entire life worked out. She and Neal were born in the same hospital on the same day and have practically been dating ever since. She is going to be an accountant and is pushing Neal to go to business school so when they finish they can get married. This summer after his junior year in high school, though, Neal is changing.
It started with a film class Neal took, in which he was supposed to create a documentary. He wanted to make a film about his father, but couldn't seem to get to the truth he needed. He received an incomplete in the class, with the requirement he finish the film over the summer. Neal decides to do the documentary at the old estate where his father was caretaker when Neal was young. This is the place where Neal has his fondest memories of his father, and he also has fond memories of a girl, Claire, whose mother owned the estate. Through this summer project, Neal begins to realize that maybe he doesn't want the well ordered life he is heading toward.
Neal's investigation of his memories was interesting, and his rediscovery of Claire was a good story, too. I thought Neal's relationship with Emily was unbelievable, and the filmmaking part of the book was a bit distracting.
What to do with your life while you're waiting........2003-10-05
This book is about finding your place in the world. When you look at adults, they all seem to have found somewhere that they fit. This book is about how Neal finds where he fits. It isn't where his mom or his girlfriend thinks, though. He finds it out for himself by making a film and finding out the secrets about his dad and meeting a new girlfriend who supports him instead of telling him stuff "for his own good." The film parts were good and it's a good story and I like the way it all came out.
The Film Documentary..........2003-03-11
Neal Thackery is a sixteen year old high school student that is required to re-do an assignment for his film class before he graduates. His teacher was nice enough to give him an incomplete for his grade instead of a failing grade because his film teacher knows that he can do a better job. Neal has to spend his summer working at a warehouse and also trying to re-do his documentary. Neal is a young boy that has a lot on his mind, especially since his father passed away from a massive heart attack. Neal's mother and long time girlfriend Emily seem to be really supportive, until they find out that Neal--once again--lost another job!! While working for a short time at the warehouse, he meets up with a girl he knew when he was younger. With her help he finds out some interesting things about his father and gets reacquainted with her.
This book has a very creative format...most of it is written as a novel, while other parts are like a script...kind of like the book, Monster by Walter Dean Myers. Honestly, I was expecting more at the end of the book.... I liked it, but wouldn't read it a second time.
This book is a good read for someone that has been real close to a loved one and lost them. The age range for this book would be ages 13-18 and even older....
Good Book for Creative "Misfits".......2002-07-16
In My Life, Take Two, Paul Many writes the story of sixteen-year-old Neal Thackery's journey to self- understanding. Neal 's documentary about his deceased father has just bombed; he has mixed memories of his father with his dreams. Now Neal must spend the summer before his senior year revamping his documentary, and to appease his practical mother and girlfriend, working at a construction warehouse, making money for college. Neal struggles at work; he can't seem to hold down a job or accept the future that others seem to have already laid out for him. At work he becomes reacquainted with childhood friend Claire and her mother who help him come to know his father. Neal learns that he has a great deal in common with his father, both artistic and creative, and with this knowledge must now make important decisions concerning his future.
Neal's voice is both witty and sarcastic, though sometimes his observations seem a little far-fetched. That lack of connection, though, may just put the reader with the practical, uncreative people who, in Neal's world, also find him hard to understand. Likewise, those readers may find that the documentary script sections slow the story and prefer Neal's humorous narrative. Overall, middle school and young adult readers will recognize Neal's feelings of inadequacies and understand his need to determine for himself what his future will hold.
