      Book Description

Help managers secure their success by learning to learn!

How you learn and what you learn are inextricably linked. Imagine a manager who prefers to resolve situations on her own. If she is offered the opportunity to work on a new project as part of a self-managed team, she may decide to turn it down because it "doesn't suit her style." Or she may not succeed as part of the team because she tries to work out everything by herself. Every time a person avoids a task or uses an unsuitable approach, an opportunity to learn is lost. Both the manager and her organization suffer as a result.

If you're striving to create a learning organization, the LTI is just what you've waited for! With the LTI, your participants will discover how they learn best and how they can adopt new learning strategies.

"At last, a practical, quick, direct, and easy-to-use tool that helps individuals flex their learning muscles! I'll use the Learning Tactics Inventory (LTI) in my consulting practice right away."
--Beverly Kaye, author, Up Is Not the Only Way

"The LTI is a very practical and readily usable tool for accessing our current methods of learning and helping us expand beyond those that are 'comfortable', so we can maximize our ability to learn from challenging experiences."
--Myrna L. Bair, director, women's leadership development program, University of Delaware, Institute for Public Administration

The Facilitator's Guide, which includes a sample copy of the Participant's Workbook, details all key workshop procedures--including setup, administration, and follow-up--and provides you with reproducible overhead and handout masters. Any facilitator, even non-training professionals, will be able to run an LTI workshop. Your participants will quickly score and interpret the inventory using the practical Participant's Workbook. Help your employees learn to learn!

      Book Description

Many gardeners still rely on the classic pink reference, Insect, Disease Weed Identification Guide simply because there arent many identification guides on the market that cover insects, diseases, and weeds all in one volume. Realizing this, expert entomologist Linda A. Gilkeson has thoroughly updated the classic pink reference book to include the latest organic control methods and all the new pests that have arrived since the books original publication in 1988. The result is simply the most complete and easy-to-use volume of its kind.

Dragonfly, Beetle, Butterfly, Bee is naturalist painter Maryjo Koch's second book in this lovely series to be honored as a Scientific American Book of the Year. Beautiful full-color illustrations are devoted to each of the insects named in the title, illuminating the wide variety of creatures within each species. Take a close-up look at the eyespots of moths and butterflies, delicate drawings of wings, and the circles of insects dubbed "good bugs" and "bad bugs." Though not specifically geared toward children, this title has more of a childlike theme running through it than any of the other books in this wonderful series. "Ladybird, ladybird, fly away, do! Fly to the mountain to feed upon dew. Feed upon dew, and when you are through, ladybird, ladybird, fly home again, do!" This traditional Chinese nursery rhyme accompanies a beautiful page full of tiny flying ladybirds. Do you wonder how these familiar little insects got their name? The answer and other little nuggets of information are included in the informative, charming, and meticulously hand-lettered text.

This book is one of the best recent examples of naturalistic painting that I have seen in a while. Her use of texture and keen eye for detail make this book a beautiful work. It is absolutely fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely adorable, a marvelous book........1998-06-29

I was delighted and amazed with this charming book on insects. I picked it up as a coffee table book, but it soon became one of my favorites. Koch's illustrations are unique and eye catching, and her text is informative and fun. This book is a well loved member of my library, not to mention my coffee table...

                Book Description

Walter Starr, Jr., was a life member of the Sierra Club who ardently loved the High Sierra. He could not rest until he had seen it all - and then he wanted others to see it, to enjoy it, and to be inspired by it as he had been. So he made notes of practical directions to the John Muir Trail, a high-country trail that runs from Mount Whitney to Yosemite National Park. Although Starr did not live to take part in the final preparation of his guidebook, so thoroughly was his work done that it was possible to publish it very nearly in the form that he had planned. The preparation was done by his father, Walter Starr, who also was well acquainted with High Sierra trails.
In the introduction to his book, Walter Starr, Jr., wrote: "By joining the United States Geological Survey maps of the region from Yosemite National Park to the headwaters of the Kern - a distance of more than one hundred and fifty miles - one will observe a continuous strip of blue lakes running down the map immediately west of the Sierra Crest. Through the heart of this blue strip winds the famous John Muir trail with laterals leading to it from the east and west, some of them vying with the Muir Trail itself in scenic grandeur."
Acting on the suggestion contained in these lines of his son, Walter Starr had a map made for the book showing the trails and approaches the author so well describes.
                This classic guide covers:
Keys to trail descriptions and map references
How to obtain a wilderness permit
                Yosemite National Park Region

                5 out of 5 stars Pete Starr.......2005-04-02

My dad and I hiked the length of the JMT many years ago. At that time Starr's Guide was invaluable. In terms of its accuracy, we encountered only one minor hiccup and it was probably our own fault. We didn't recognize Senger Creek when we passed it and we kept looking for it for a few miles when it was actually behind us. Hiking a few extra miles at the end of the day was hard but it all worked out as we took a layover day for some fishing on the middle fork of the San Joaquin River.

For more information on "Pete" Starr, check out William Alsup's book, "Missing in the Minarets: The Search for Walter A. Starr Jr."

4 out of 5 stars As history, a must, but not up to date.......2004-03-01

There's no doubt that Robinson's guide is one of the great books written about the JMT, no one disputes this. It's nicely written, informative and gives background on the trail not found in other guides. However (and this is a huge "but"), this book is *not* useful for planning a present-day thru hike of the John Muir Trail. It was written in the mid 1930's and so much has changed in the intervening 70 years. Locations to trailheads, water sources and resupplying points and all drastically changed since 1936.

Most people who thru hike the JMT want all books every published about it, to remind ourselves of our accomplishment. This book definitely deserves a hallowed spot on your bookshelf, it just doesn't belong in your pack in these modern times.

5 out of 5 stars The best JMT guide--ever.......2002-12-20

Having grown up in the John Muir Wilderness as a Boy Scout, I can attest to the greatness of the guide. Its size and intricate, step ny step trial guidance is second-to-none. An absolute must-read for anyone even remotely contemplating a trek between Mount Whitney and Yosemite. Despite the fact that the information in the guide originates in the 1930's, it is still relevant today and provides a very sound planning tool for Scouters and "civilians" alike. I recommend it highly for another reason: It fits in the outer pocket of my backpack!

3 out of 5 stars The prolog about Walter Starr is amazing........1999-05-18

The problem with this guide is it was written in the 30's and the trailhead info is not totally reliable. For hardcore JMT fans this is a must-read.

                Book Description

Every English-language writer knows Strunk and White's famous little writing manual, The Elements of Style. Many people between the ages of seventeen and seventy can recite the book's mantra--make every word tell--and still refer to their tattered grade school copy when in need of a hint on how to make a turn of phrase clearer, or a reminder on how to enliven prose with the active voice. Considering that millions of copies have been sold to millions of devotees, you might not think to ask what could enhance this (almost) perfect classic. In fact, the addition of illustrations allows readers to experience the book's contents in a completely new way, making the whole learning experience more colorful and clear, as well as adding a whimsical element that compliments the subtly humorous tone of the prose. The Elements of Style Illustrated will come to be known as the definitive, must-have edition.

Maira Kalman is the offbeat and wildly talented illustrator of twelve children's books, numerous covers for The New Yorker magazine, fabrics for the fashion designers Isaac Mizrahi and Kate Spade, watches and accessories for the Museum of Modern Art, and a mural at the elegant Wavehill estate in Riverdale, among other projects. Her sophisticated and witty images that are yet bright and fanciful have won her a devoted following, especially among young urbanites. Maira Kalman is acknowledged by the E. B. White estate as the single artist trusted to illustrate the revered The Elements of Style.

The Elements of Style Illustrated brings a fresh immediacy to the well-loved, much-valued, and still on-point work that has become an institution. While giving the classic work a jolt of new energy to appeal to contemporary readers, Kalman's illustrations are hemselves timeless, designed to sit alongside the ever-enduring manual for another fifty years and more.

William Strunk and E. B. White's classic writing manual, The Elements of Style, has been enriched to include the vibrant, witty, and instantly recognizable images of Maira Kalman in a beautiful illustrated edition

In her own words: "born. bucolic childhood. culture-stuffed adolescence. played piano. stopped. danced. stopped. wrote. discarded writing. drew. reinstated writing. married Tibor Kalman and collaborated at iconoclastic yet successful design studio. wrote and painted children's books. worried. took up Ping-Pong. relaxed. wrote and painted for many magazines. cofounded the Rubber Band Society. amused. children: two. dog: one."

5 out of 5 stars Of Invaluable Importance to Any Anglophone.......2007-10-01

Simply one of the best guides available on how to write the English language. Forty years ago, acclaimed author E.B. White edited and refurbished his 1918 English book written by Professor William Shrunk. Still in print today, a once dull, outdated textbook has been revamped and updated for the modern era in a colorful, modishly illustrated edition. The techniques and rules for writing are just as fundamental and undying since first comprised in the original addition and just as useful to us today. "Elements of Style" shouldn't be considered a textbook in any sense, that word tends to deter readers; moreover, a simple compilation of basic rules of grammar and composition guidelines that aids everyone from the lifelong journalist to the occasional letter writer. This little, red book contains a cache of rules, definitions, punctuations, and proper expressions condensed into five, clear, user-friendly, concise chapters.

Get to the point. Omit needless words. Don't overwrite. Compose an accurate, concise discourse.

White demonstrates that the beauty of our language, as demonstrated by himself and other classical authors, is that we can all follow the same formalities of one another yet be so individualistic and uncommon in style without sacrificing clarity. While the first half covers simple grammatical rules, the latter half of the five chapters is devoted to rules that will foster each writer's own unique ingenuity. In a rare assurance, this is one of the books that promises to change how you see your own words on paper.

This book should be required of all Amazon reviewers since actually reading the book isn't these days.

                5 out of 5 stars great presentation.......2007-09-28

Very clear instruction and easy to accept; it does not insult the reader. This edition's layout is beautiful (especially the covers). The llustrations are of an unexpected style. They may not add to every reader's experience.

I thought this was a great book for both young adults and parents. The setting is very current and the issues are those that young people are very likely to deal with todaay. I would encourage readers in 8th - 10th grade to pick this one up. Well written and a real page-turner.

                        Book Description

The second pulsating Manchester thriller from the author of The Craze.

When Rafi Rafiq and Richard Armitage leave their flat on Thursdays their ambition stretches no further than their giros (welfare cheques) and the betting shop. Bonded from birth, blood cousins through school, failures thereafter, they share everything: draw, food, fags, booze and vaginas, an unholy pentagram of sleaze. Nowhere Rafi leads is out of bounds. Until now. He gets them caught breaking into Manchester’s first all-Asian brothel, Mohamed Butt’s notorious nach ghar, and they’re faced with a simple choice: pay or die. But Richard’s fallen in love — with Butt’s favourite girl, Fari — and decides they have to save her.

And for Rafi it gets worse. The Death Angel is back. “Gorgeous George” Cotterel. On the lookout for starlets to play in his latest video nasty, George knows just the thing that will sell them. And just the way to get them: Brown boys in chocolate. When Rafi and Richard answer a ringing phone in Manley Park, the combination is far from their minds, but George has it all planned — and they find themselves wrestling, literally, for their lives.
