                    Book Description

Based on the author's widely used earlier text African Farm Management, this account updates the economic analysis of tropical agriculture and broadens its perspective to include examples from all parts of the developing world. Writing in a clear, concise style, Professor Upton explains the essential theories of farm economics without numerous mathematical formulae. The text is completely revised, with increased emphasis on farm household economics, in which farms are seen as consumers as well as producers. Also included is a new chapter on the economics of irrigated agriculture. This book provides an invaluable economic framework for better understanding the operation and management of farming systems in the tropics, and will be welcomed by students of tropical agriculture worldwide. From reviews of African Farm Management: "The author produces an authoritative text interlaced with many relevant and illustrative references." -- Experimental Agriculture

We'll this book is great. It explains ways in which to farm ecologically in the tropics. The mulch techniques are very sound. Data is let known about the species which are used and the countries in which certain systems are lived in. Bascially about systems. Its a shame that the book went out of print. If you would like to get a copy i know a seller e-mail me at theorganicfarmer@yahoo.com peace

Dr. Thurston describes in a clear, simple and accesible way various sustainable agriculture systems used around the world. The book has a "direct to the point" approach, perfect for a begginner. It is complete, objective and didn't fall into the anecdotic. It truly helped me and showed a real way to do sustainable agriculture.

                              Book Description

                              Foreword by Martin E. Marty

As early as 1954—well before such popular books as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring—the influential Lutheran theologian Joseph Sittler wrote on the need to think about “a theology for earth.” Perhaps most famous for his eloquent and provocative address “Called to Unity” given at the 1961 World Council of Churches in New Delhi, Sittler prophetically and insistently gave voice to what he called “ecological commitment as theological responsibility.”

Evocations of Grace introduces a new generation of readers to the thought of Jospeh Sittler. Gathering ten of Sittler's seminal works—works foundational to the field yet unavailable until now— the volume conveys Sittler's powerfully argument for the vital connection between Christian theology, ethics, and the natural world. In an area where so much writing tends to be drearily repetitious, Sittler—even forty years later—remains a fresh voice. His proposal for a “cosmic christology” and his clarion call for “the care of the earth” continue to shape current eco-theological reflection. The book also includes a comprehensive Sittler bibliography and original essays by editors Steven Bouma-Prediger and Peter Bakken that assess Sittler's pioneering contribution to environmental ethics.

Intended for anyone interested in the relationship between Christian faith and the environment, Evocations of Grace provides the necessary perspective for thinking seriously about the earth and our responsibility to it.

5 out of 5 stars An underappreciated theologian........2001-09-22

"Evocations of Grace" is a small sampling of Joseph Sittler's writings and thoughts on ecology, theology and ecumenism from 1954-75. Martin E. Marty (University of Chicago) wrote a very personal foreward describing Sittler as a truly gifted "theologian, rhetor, teacher, exemplar". Sittler was a pioneer in terms of speaking out on the environment from a Christian perspective. His description of nature (both organic and works of art, poetry, dance) was the "theatre of God's of grace". He made a landmark speech at the 1961 World Council of Churches on ecumenism. Sittler's writing is interesting and alive because he "insisted that his loose, unsystematic manner of exposition was appropriate to the dynamic and interrelated character of experience, and to the concrete particularity of occasions of grace". "Evocations" is a fantastic introduction to a bit of Sittler's "corpus of work"--how Joe would have loved to play with THAT phrase!

Evocations of Grace is a compilation of some of the writings and musings of American Lutheran Joseph Sittler. This corpus of work spans from 1954 to 1975. Martin E. Marty gives a very personal glimpse of Sittler who attracted small groups of students who listened for any tidbit they could glean as he walked through Chicago's Hyde Park. Sittler wrote and spoke on the environment in the '50's. He influenced Teilhard de Chardin's work on the "cosmic Christ". In 1961 he made a landmark speech on ecumenism at the WCC meeting in New Delhi. Sittler's incarnational view of nature as "God's theatre of grace" shaped much of his theology on "creation-as-grace". Sittler is an interesting theologian to read because of his style of using poetry and literature (which he considered to be part of nature, along with art, dance, etc...) in his "loose, unsystematic manner of exposition". "Evocations" is a fine introduction to a theologian who will hopefully, one day, be recognized for the pioneering theologian he was.

This is a compact book with lots of diagrams. Makes for a nice complement to a beginner's keelboat sailing course. More detailed information can be found in the Colgates' "Fast Track to Cruising."

The illustrations in this book really are outstanding; especially compared to the ASA Sailing Fundamentals book. However, the Sailing Fundamentals book is more complete when it comes to regulations and safety. I recommend using both books.

My name is Scott Livingston and I am the Assistant Director of Baltimore's Downtown Sailing Center.

We have been instructing adults to sail since 1993, and we currently put more than 300 students through our programs every year.

We have been using Basic Keelboat since day 1, and all of our students have given this book high ranks.

This book breaks down the fundamentals of sailing, into digestible bits and pieces, with fantastic illustrations which help people to learn.

There is no better way to learn then actually being on the water, but by thoroughly reading this book, you will gain the academics towards sailing, and this will help the on the water experience significantly.

This is also a good book to come back time and time again, and really solidify your sailing abilities.

The Song of an Emerald Dove is a suspenseful story that, at times, draws from the headlines. More than twenty years ago, Yvonne Hampton began receiving channeled messages that told of an impending doomsday. For personal reasons she concealed them. Then one day, ten years later, she finds both the opportunity and the courage to reveal them.

3 out of 5 stars Reviewed by Tom Morton.......2007-03-26

Ok, at the risk of sounding inane, The Song of an Emerald Dove, by Xanna Vinson, is a bewitching tale of modern-day Wiccans. Too strong? How about spellbinding? Charming? I could go on...but I'll spare you my craftiness.

If one has the mental fortitude to withstand a slightly-too-lengthy set-up, Dove is a wonderful read about heroes (complete with capes, though not the same kind super-heroes sport) who just want to serve their Goddess, saving Earth in the process. The Ladies of the world realize, through the guidance of their High Priestess, that they must somehow stop a global disaster from annihilating most of the world's populace. By tying in actual events that occurred in recent years, i.e. the Unibomber, the Twin Towers, the USS Cole, etc, to the coven's mission, the actual threat can be felt by the reader.

The main characters of this short novel are women from all walks of life, who have to deal with real issues; jobs, relationships, aging, etc. Vinson does a great job of fleshing out these women to make them seem as real as the girl next door, as well as that girl's mother and grandmother! Followers of the Wiccan path will also be pleased to note the fine detail that the author puts into the ritual scenes, without making them seem cheap or cheesy.

The single issue that I had with this book was with the introduction of the military presence. Whose side were they on? It felt like Vinson needed an antagonist so she went with the old standby, only with a new twist. Secret military projects are always a bonus in my estimation, especially ones that hold a ring of truth to them, but the tie-in to the main plot of the story falls a bit short.

Overall, I would recommend Dove as an interesting read, resplendent with beautiful imagery and a heartfelt message of Peace on Earth. Not just for humanity's sake, but for that of Mother Earth as well.

1 out of 5 stars Feminist and Spooky.......2006-10-17

I had high hopes for reading this book, but it disappointed in many ways. The characters were cardboard cutouts, so that it was hard to tell them apart (even with the cheat-sheet at the back of the book) and even by the end of the book I didn't care enough about them to care about what happened to them. The author goes into too much detail about things that don't matter, like what people are having for dinner and what comes to them in their junkmail, and spends not nearly enough time and effort building interesting and believeable characters.

All of which I could have forgiven if the "message" of the book had been worth it. However, a big part of the message was that Mother Earth is in trouble and the reason She is in trouble is that men always mess things up over and over again, so that a few certain special select women are then called to fix things up over and over again. This time around, they form a group who do remote viewing in order to find out what is wrong and fix it, during which they apparently come to the notice of the government, who also has their remote viewing brigade.

Sadly, male characters were definitely given even more short-shrift in this book than the female ones, when they weren't being castigated altogether. The writing was clumsy at times and could have used a good edit or two. Overall, not a good book and one that seems to be feminist in all the wrong directions.

I borrowed "The Song of an Emerald Dove" and read it in two days -- which my friend says has to be a record! I didn't really think that I would have a single thing in common with a group of New England witches! Turns out, I feel like we were living parallel lives. I bought my own copy.

The women in this story lead normal lives, hold down jobs, and raise children -- except for one minor detail. They are all witches. Not the ridiculous nose-wrinkling ones from early television and definitely not the hook-nosed ones in the Halloween displays. They are decent, caring women who are trying their damnedest to save the planet -- and that's not as far-fetched as you'd think -- not today!

Granted that it took a while to feel comfortable being drawn into the rituals in this book, but I have to say that once I got used to it -- it felt good! These women have gotten psychic messages that the world is being threatened. They are as dubious as I was, but that soon changed.

In a world where more and more television and film introduces us to after-death contacts, magic, and the supernatural, I think this book deserves a look-see by anyone who enjoys good writing, a well-handled plot, and hard-won victories. I want to see more stories from Xanna Vinson.

And while I'm at it, let me tell you to also pick up Dr. Jean Bolen's newest book, "Urgent Message from Mother." Look it up here on Amazon and you'll see what I'm driving at. "Dove" makes you feel good about women feeling empowered. "Message" shows you how to do it yourself!

But you're going to have to buy your own -- I'm never parting with either of them!

Vinson is a master at description. You feel like you're there and that helps you get drawn into the mysterious happenings and visions in her small circle of friends. Why are they getting these visions? What are they supposed to do with them? Why do they seem to be related to some of the headlines they're seeing -- WE're seeing? Great read.

Daddy is leaving for Vietnam to help as a mechanic. Hes being shipped overseas. So they decide to move so they would be closer to him, but daddy just got upset about it because he thought we should stay close to family in case of dire need. But that just made mama mad because she didn't get along with the family. The next morning daddy left. Bobbie went to school the next day, and found out everyone was mean besides one girl. On the second day of school she met the girl, her name was Wendy. She invited her over after school, but she said she didn't know. At recess she taught her how to whistle with her thumbs. When she got home there was no one home, so she decided to go ahead, and go over to Wendy's house. They whistled, and the doves came, and they had a great time. She left, and went home, and that is when every thing went down hill. Her brother told her they had just found out about her daddy, and MIA.

Even though Bobbie Lynn moves all over the country because her dad is in the army, she never likes moving and having to make new friends. When her father gets sent to Vietnam, and the family moves from Texas to Washington State so they can all be near him before he ships out, Bobbie Lynn worries. She's too big and she's shy and, to top it all off, she has a weird haircut that the kids at her new school make fun of.

But that's not all Bobbie Lynn worries about. Without her father around, Bobbie Lynn's mother, who has always been a little delicate, seems even more so. Bobbie Lynn and her older brother Mason are scared. They don't know when their dad is coming home, and they don't know what to do about their mother --- all they know is that they promised their father they'd take care of their mother. Even if it means stealing food, Mason and Bobbie Lynn will keep their promise and their secret.

Then Bobbie Lynn befriends an odd girl named Wendy Feeney, who's everything Bobbie Lynn isn't. She's small, but she talks back when she gets picked on. And she says strange things, like swearing that everyone has a guardian angel. Well, if that's true, then where, Bobbie Lynn wonders, is her guardian angel?

This book is an interesting look into what it's like having a father in the army. But more than that, it's a look into living with a parent who has a mental illness. Because Bobbie Lynn feels disloyal getting help from anyone, as if her mother is her responsibility, her love gets in the way of what's best for her family. DOVE SONG is a novel about love and about family and what holds it together. And, as it turns out, it just may be about finding your guardian angel.

Dove Song is a good book for any kid who understands what it feels like to be under presseure and knows how it feels to have to take care of someone elses needs. It is about a young girl in 6th grade and her brother whose father was sent to war in Vietnam and their mom who is under a "horrible spell" in who they have to take care of they dont have much yet they survive. I would reccomend this book.

It a book that shows a story of just how strong the bond between siblings can be and how friendships can blossom when you least expect them. Bobbie Lynn's father is sent to vietnam and so her mother moves her and her brother Mason to be near him on his base on the other side of America before he leaves and it is here that Bobbie Lynn meets Wendy. None of the other girls like Wendy, but Bobbie Lynn finds her self befriended with the girl unafraid to hoot like a dove and dance around the play ground all the while laughing, but when her father is found missing in action her mother reactes much differently then she had ever acted before and it takes her bond with her brother Mason and the comfort of her friendship to learn what the difference between asking and not asking for help can mean. Short as it is, it is filled with a wonderful story anybody can relate to in some way.
