Peer review in health sciences.......2000-11-02

This is an important book for persons involved with academic peer review in the medical field. Fiona Godlee from the British Medical journal and Tom Jefferson from the Oxford Cochrane Centre have edited with another 28 contributors from various parts of the world. The book has three main parts. In the first part peer review is described and how it contributes to the quality of medical research. The second part is a practical part with advice for reviewers and the third part looks into the future. The internet will be able to improve many aspects of peer review and also improve editorial quality with a more speedy publication, flexibility, more easy access worldwide and cost-benefits for the reader. Electronic publication can increase the number of reviewers in a more interactive way with authors and readers also interacting. The British Medical Journal is a good example of this new internet interaction. Peer review is a way of giving journal editors advice, which editors can accept or not, but it should provide the editors with a fair assessment of articles, prevent publications of errors and improve the quality of articles accepted for publication. It is also a way to give critical advice for authors, when revising their articles. Peer review is recommended for editors, editorial board members and reviewers involved with medical and allied publications and also persons involved with review of grant proposals.

Thorough and unique review of the subject.......1999-08-11

Jefferson and Godlee have brought together an impressive team of authors and produced a thorough review of peer review in health sciences.

The book covers peer review from all conceivable angles - its history and future, its strengths and its considerable weaknesses. For me, the highlight of the book was the visit of Socrates. As ever, the old Greek exposed with a few choice questions the myths that make peer review such a powerful and sometimes damaging part of professional power.

My only gripe is that there is a degree of ovelap between the chapters, which might have been avoided.

There are some signs that the medical publishing community are already adopting a more scientific approach to editorial practice. This book can only speed up that process and let's hope the next edition of this book shows evidence of progress.

We applied the alkaline version of the single-cell gel electrophoresis (comet) assay to roots and leaves of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum var. xanthi) seedlings or isolated leaf nuclei treated with: (1) the alkylating agent ethyl methanesulphonate, (2) necrotic heat treatments at 50^oC, and (3) DNase-I. All three treatments induced a dose-dependent increase in DNA migration, expressed as percentage of tail DNA. A comparison of the fluorochrome DNA dyes ethidium bromide, DAPI and YOYO-1 demonstrated that for the alkaline version of the comet assay in plants, the commonly used fluorescent dye ethidium bromide can be used with the same efficiency as DAPI or YOYO-1.

Great Size - Lacking Lryrics.......2005-08-26

I agree with other "raters" that the size of this book is great for camping, hiking, etc. It could fit into a traditionally sized pocket and you could easily find room for it in a back pack, etc. Each song also has notes, so that if you don't know the melody, you can pick it out on the piano. However, it is definately not a piano book, the notes are not arranged for that - just a simple one-handed tune. I was disappointed That most songs only have one verse and the chorus. Occasionally, a 2nd verse is included. But, I would like 4-5 verses for songs that have them.

Great little book.......2005-07-28

This is a super little book for anyone wanting to sing old favorites from around the world at a campfire. The score for the melody is given along with guitar chords. Tabbing the melodies for harmonica was pretty easy and I'm very happy with the results.

This is what I expected - chock full of good old songs. Both the notes and chords are listed, which is great. And most of them use few chords, which is great for a beginner like me! The book is small in size, which is good, but that's also bad because it doesn't want to stay open - I use my capo to clip it open! Haven't used my capo much, so now I've found a good use for that, too.

What a WONDERFUL book!

I previewed this book on-line and was not disappointed. The pages shown are exactly what the rest of the book is like!

IT's great to have the music (although basic) and chords for many old songs that people 'assume' everyone knows.

This is a MUST for any Scout leader who wants to put a little sparkle in their program. It will truly expand your Pack/Troop song repetroire!

The author really knows comedy!.......2003-06-06

I didn't know that this series would be so cool, magical, and hysterical. To think I was kind of scared to try this series out, to think I'd waste my money on it. But, boy, was I wrong. People who like chuch magic/magic shows, and just plain comedy might like this series.This author ranks up with naoko takechi and clamp.
In the first chapter S.T returns a doll to it's owner.
In the second chapter a new student joins Asuka Jr.'s attempt to catch S.T. And S.T steals a painting.
In the third chapter S.T steals a dagger.
In the fourth chapter S.T. steals back a baseball player's glove in time for his game.
In the sixth chapter S.T steals back a design and wedding dress. And a young girl wins a wedding dress contest with the help of Meimi.

Fun-FIlled, Adorable and incredibly Kawaii!.......2003-04-06

I thought that this was a very addicting and entertaining volume of Saint Tail (Saint Tail was originally Kaitou Saint Tail before it was translated, I think). To be honest, I used to avoid reading it because I thought it would be something like Sailor Moon, which I never bothered to read a single page of...(honestly!) because that sort of shojo style of drawing just didn't seem to pop out at me. (Explanation: I usually read manga from CLAMP)

So, I started reading Saint Tail because an article in a manga magazine recommended this as a delightful series. Now, Saint Tail is one of my favorite manga series, although I've only read volumes 1 and 2.

Please note that it might be annoying for people who absolutely can't tolerate repitition to read the "One...Two...THREE!"'s in every chapter, since that is how Meimi turns into Saint Tail and also how she performs many of her magic tricks. Also, Meimi's friend and nun-in-training, Seira, always says "The good lord will help you" after listening to people's problems.

However, the stories are very interesting to read over, and the artwork isn't very bad, either. The love/hate relationship between Meimi and Asuka Jr. is very tangled, which allows numerous bits of comedy to appear all over the place- usually in school. Also, the characters are sooo cute! (Um...except for Lina...) This is probably best for pre-teens, although young teens might like it as well.

That said, I'll sum everything up with a quick and poorly internally cited quote:

If you're looking for something sweet, Kaitou Saint Tail is sure to please (Animerica Extra Vol. 2.11, page 3?).

Honestly Entertaining.......2002-04-05

Asuka Jr., the son of a famous detective, who is determined to be the one to catch the thief, pursues her.
As much as I would love to give all manga books five stars and a perfect rating I cannot. This book is very entertaining but it lacks some of the qualities that catch the older readers eye.
The art is very cute and it is a great story, but I would not recommend, "guess purchasing" this book, as I would call it unless you like a large variety of manga. But please don't get the wrong idea. It's a great book for people 15 and under. 15 might be the limit though. (I being 16 cannot give you the younger reader's review)

The Chase is on!!!.......2001-11-22

Well if you liked the first and believed it to hold more room for the 2nd one in the series you are correct. Even though the plot lines were still a little cheesy. I thought it was much better and now there is more tension between Asuka Jr. and Saint Tail(A.K.A Meime) It was really sweet and it's a little funnier than the previous. If you thought the first one was so-so or pretty good than this one is a must!!! It's just starting to get good and leaves off kind of on a cliffhanger, and like I said earlier the Asuka Jr. is pretty close to catching her. I won't get into too many details but it's a must have!!!!!
