The scaling issue remains one of the largest problems in soil science and hydrology. This book is a unique compendium of ideas, conceptual approaches, techniques, and methodologies for scaling soil physical properties. The astronomer Jan Hendrik Oort (1900-1992) left behind an extensive collection of notes and correspondence, both on his research and on matters that concerned him in a variety of official functions. Upon Oort's death, the collection was augmented by more personal papers, letters, journals, and diaries.
The resulting collection forms a rich source of information on many aspects of twentieth-century astronomy, in which Oort played such an important role. The scientific and personal material covers the entire span of time from Oort's early youth until his death.
To make these papers accessible to a wide circle of users, the collection has now been catalogued and described; the result is presented in this volume. A name index and a subject index have been added to facilitate access. The inventory is accompanied by a short biographical sketch, and a number of photographs, mostly relating to Oort's career as a scientist.
The original papers themselves are archived in the Leiden University Library.

A guilty pleasure.......2004-12-04

Although I have long since graduated to much less easygoing fare, I love this book. When I was a confused and clueless medical student, this was the first text that helped me to come to terms with biostatistical concepts.

If you have a background in psychology or other softer sciences, are facing your first biostatistics class, and find other texts a bit scary or obscure, this is definitely worth a try.

The jokes become annoying and the examples a bit garbled on a second read, but I still love this book because of the clarity of its visuals. I also like and highly recommend the chapters on factor analysis and survival analysis, and usually give this book to new students in our lab.

Best intro stat book I've found.......2004-11-09

I took stat 20 years ago, and decided I needed an update, particularly regarding how to calculate sample size: this book was the ticket. A lot about sample size always seemed to me to be smoke-and-mirrors, and WHEN that's so (not always, but sometimes!), Norman and Streiner admit it, saving the learner a lot of frustration. Money well spent.

The best biostatistics review ever!.......2004-11-03

I keep a copy of this book in my office to loan out to students who are reviewing for biostatistics exams, and colleagues who feel the need to brush up on their biostats.

The book definitely does assume some basic knowledge about statistics -- I wouldn't recommend it for someone trying to learn about biostats for the first time. It's really best for someone who already has some kind of formal training in biostatistics, but doesn't want to have to dredge through the heavy textbooks for every question -- I can definitely find the answers to my most common questions in this book much more quickly than I can in my formal textbooks.

For those looking for a less technical introduction to biostatistics that doesn't presume a lot of preexisting knowledge, I'd suggest Modulsky's 'Intuitive Biostatistics'.

just get to the point!.......2004-01-17

I found this book extremely annoying to read. I thought it
would be a good idea to get an easy statistics book that does
not presume too much prior knowledge I quickly found the so
called "humor" to seriously interfere with readability. The
constant attempt to be funny simply becomes the book's major
goal in almost every sentence you read! and I just found this irritating to a degree that the book is rendered useless.

These guys are great! An easy-to-read, enjoyable stats book. Never seen one like it. Although it's titled 'biostatistics', it's for anyone who wants to actually understand what statistics is.

I teach and do statistics for a living. Don't let the humor fool you. Despite being the most (only?) fun to read statistics book, it also has more thorough (and readable and usable) coverage coverage of the basics and advanced methods than any other book its size. It explains both underlying principles and practical applications. Readable, usable, thorough AND funny. Who would have thought it possible for a statistics book! I reccomend it to anybody in the biomedical or social sciences who wants to learn statistics AND as a handy reference for anybody who uses statistics AND for anybody who needs to teach students AND for anybody who needs to explain statistics to the public. Deserves to be bestseller. And it's back in print by BC Decker, available in U.S. from Blackwell; ISBN: 1550090852.

I was trying to find the book for residents and students. I can believe that it is out of print! It was the only book I could find in many years that could be used to learn biostatitics on your own. It was easy, fun and it did not treat you as a dummy.

This book is fun and interesting, and not nearly as scary as the rest. It doesn't rely on lots of math, and it presents basic concepts in a way that regular people can understand. I recommend it to everyone I know who (1) doesn't know much about stats but (2) finds they need to do something statistical.

Excellent read.......2004-10-06

Blakeley's book covers a lot of shooting theory and information along with great stories that were entertaining and helped to demonstrate to me much of the theory he describes. He also punches holes through some common myths that every shooter (hunter and sporting) could do very well without. All in all, a very good reference book.

In this excellent book Peter Blakeley presents a wealth of interesting information on shotgun shooting theory and practice. The book is geared to those who want to hit targets more consistently, and understand the how and why of it. The book has good tips on targets in sporting clays and skeet. In addition, there is much on bird hunting.

Excellent study aid for lower grades!.......2007-05-23

I purchased hard cover Merriam-Webster's Elementary Dictionary for each one of my First Grade Class to give at the end of the school year as a special prize. The next day two of the boys brought their dictionaries back to school with ALL of the bird pictures in the dictionary marked to show me. Each one could also read the description of the birds pictured. This is a very complete, well illustrated dictionary for any American child aged 6-14. I can see years of use for each dictionary as the children progress to upper levels. I plan to purchase the same dictionary for my class next year. I have several Scholastic dictionaries in the classroom but they are not as well researched as Merriam-Webster.

MY DAUGHTER IS SEVEN AND WAS REALLY EXICTED TO RECEIVE THIS. I DON'T ALLOW HER TO USE THE ADULT DICTIONARY BECAUSE OF SOME OF THE WORDS IN IT. SHE WILL FIND THOSE OUT WHEN SHE GROWS UP BUT THIS IS GREAT. THE DESCRIPTION OF IT IS WONDERFUL, SHE REALLY ENJOYS IT, AND LOOKS UP WORDS FOR FUN NOT JUST FOR SCHOOL. GLAD THAT I MADE THIS PURCHASE.

Excellent Dictionary.......2006-03-31

I have a copy of A dictionary for boys and girls, Websters Elementary Dictionary, Copyright, 1956 that I used when I was in elementary school. My kids are using the same dictionary and really enjoy it. Books do not have to be currently up to date to have such a great value as this one. Great book.
