Book Description
This unique book is the first of its kind to explore the diversity of interactions between insects and birds. A group of international experts enthusiastically agreed to contribute to the four sections of the book following the success of an Entomological Club Conference on Insect and Bird Interactions. The first section covers population management issues, discussing effects on birds highly relevant to the planting of large areas of GM crops, new opportunities for increasing biodiversity in farming landscapes, and the novel aspect of managing insects by exploiting birds as biological control agents. This is followed by a section discussing the effects of insecticides on bird populations, and includes a contribution from the RSPB, as well as a re-appraisal of the effects of DDT on raptors. Next, the foraging behaviour of birds on insects is discussed, with chapters also on ‘warning’ coloration in insects and learning by birds. The first chapter in this section is unusual in having been written by an ophthalmologist and covers colour vision in birds, more specifically ultraviolet vision in relation to insect coloration. Finally, the authors look at insects that are parasites of birds or feed on the detritus in nests, and review the ecology and evolution of the co-adaptation of insect ectoparasites with birds. Insect and Bird Interactions is unparalleled in scope and coverage and will be of interest to entomologists, ornithologists, and ecologists alike.

Book Description
This book reveals the remarkable revolution which has occurred in infrared astronomy in recent years as the result of technology breakthroughs in the development and availability of tiny imaging devices known as `arrays'. The book contains the proceedings of a conference at the University of California, Los Angeles in July 1993 at which about 300 participants from all over the world met to discuss the progress and astronomical applications of infrared array detectors. A key feature of the book is the mix of papers describing the detector technology, astronomical instruments or observational methods, with those describing the latest, exciting astrophysical conclusions based on measurements made with the new arrays. In many cases, the images and spectra shown were spectacular, and it was difficult to appreciate that the results were for infrared rather than optical wavelengths. Astronomers, instrument designers and representatives of the infrared detector industry were all present. Reviews of the state-of-the-art in near infrared imaging and spectroscopy and mid-to-far infrared imaging and spectroscopy from ground-based observatories are mixed with reviews of planned space missions such as HST-second generation instruments, ISO, and SIRTF. Prospects for IR astronomy from Antarctica are also described. Finally, the first infrared astronomical science from the 10-m W.M. Keck Telescope is described. Also, numerous astronomical results and new instrumentation ideas are summarized in over 100 poster papers. This book provides an invaluable reference work and an excellent introduction for all astronomers to the rapidly growing field of infrared astronomy. Scientific topics range from studies of solar system objects to galaxies at very high redshifts, and include almost everything in between e.g., star forming regions, the Galactic Center, globular clusters, starburst galaxies and cosmology. Only a few years ago none of these studies would have been possible.
Book Description
Perspectives on Gene Patenting: Religion, Science, and Industry in Dialogue is the outgrowth of an unusual multi-sector dialogue between members of the religious, scientific, business, and legal communities on the appropriateness and implications of patenting human genes. The volume focuses on 6 key topics:
1.) Should products of nature be patentable?
2.) Are genes or gene fragments discoveries or inventions?
3.) Should patenting of genes, cell lines, or genetically modified organisms be equated with ownership of them?
4.) Does patenting promote scientific research and contribute to human welfare?
5.) Is the DNA in genes just a complex molecule or is it sacred?
6.) Does patenting human DNA and tissue demean human life and human dignity?
In addressing these issues, Perspectives on Gene Patenting reflects the differing viewpoints of the participants in the dialogue group, as well as their search for mutual understanding and common ground.

Denali's West Buttress: A Climber's Guide to Mount McKinley's Classic Route.......2007-04-03
I've just received it and haven't had the chance to really "get into it". BUT ... the little I've read it seems to be just what I was wanting.
A mus have for the west but.......2007-01-09
Very detailed description of the classic route.
The very accurate photos are good complements to the map (not included with the book)
Trustworthy.......2006-02-24
This is one of only two books I would trust for reliable information about the West Buttress route of Denali. Very informative and practical!
Great Book.......2003-11-13
This an excellent guide if you've decided on the West Buttress route.
Also check out the Dixie 3000: a hiking guide to the peaks in South Carolina over 3000'. Lots of fun hikes in there. Contact Docbeaker@aol.com for more info.
Simple and to the point.......2002-02-09
This book was easy to read and provides a great historical overview of the mountain, what equipment you need and a detailed step by step guide to the West Buttress route with Maps from Brad Washburn. Although I would say this book is merely a warm up in the research you need to do and understand to climb Denali. A very practical guide.

Book Description
What is It About Alison?
For one thing, she has rules:
When stealing a rowboat, ALWAYS check that the oars are the same length, so you don't go in circles.
In reference to your best friend's crush, KEEP your feelings to yourself.
NEVER use your locker if that's where you were standing when told the very worst news of all.
But rules –– like hearts –– are meant to be broken.

Customer Reviews:
Catherine Clark knows how teens feel.......2005-12-27
I thoroughly enjoyed this book because the characters were believable. Catherine knows how to write. She hasn't forgotten what it feels like to be a teen. Her characters sound like teens. They act like teens. The Alison Rules is a sad story about a girl named Alison who is trying to cope with the death of her mother. I don't want to reveal too much here, but this book is a definitely a good one. I suggest to all teen readers and anyone who enjoys coming of age stories.
Acurate teenage story-with a surprise.......2005-10-27
The book Alison Rules is a great book for anyone who remembers being a teenager, or still is for that matter, as well as anyone who has had to deal with the loss of a loved one. The book is from the point of view of Alison, a sophmore in high school. She had lost her mother in the previous summer, and we get a feel of how it feels like to cope with such a terrible loss, and how much harder it really is than it appears to those who have never had that happen yet, or to those of you who have recently lost someone, this book gives a great explanation of view of significant teenage girl dealing with losing someone close.
The author does a great job of thinking like a young teenage girl. I being one myself, understood where Alison was coming from through out the book, and all of it was really accurate, anywhere from not understanding math, to best friend disputes, to getting around to spending quality family time, along with other typical and not so typical events and scenarios through out the book.
To those who do read this book, the beginning and well through the middle of the book, its pretty slow, but don't give up on the book!! It has a shocking ending, that really comes out of no where, and it really hits you hard. I recommend that you read the entire book. You need to read through to the end to really understand the whole meaning of the book. Its as if the last part of the book ties the entire story of the Alison Rules all together, and you realize just how much of it you didn't really understand at the beginning.
i hope you enjoy the book!!
go buy it! .......2005-10-16
The Alison Rules is one of the best books i've ever read. It made me laugh and cry. It also teaches you life lessons. Alison already lost her mom and decides to cope with that by never thinking about her and never having a fun time. When she finally meets a guy named Patrick. But her best friend likes him also. At the end its very sad but gives you a good lesson in life of how you should deal with things. I would recomend it to anyone looking for a good book to read.
suprise ending.......2005-05-15
i was a little bored at the beginning because i thought nothing was ever going to happen but from then on it kept my interest and i could'nt put it down....literally oh yeah and the ending...oh man i never saw that coming! thats what made me love this book!!!!
Just okay.......2005-03-03
Catherine Clark is one of my favorite authors and I fell in love with her books "Truth Or Diary" and "Wurst Case Scenario". Unfortunately, I did not fall in love with this book like I did the others.
Alison is a smart girl with one good friend. Alison's mother died the year before and Alison is feeling withdrawn. A new boy, named Patrick, moves into her tiny home town and both Alison and her best friend, Laurie, get crushes on him. It turns out that Patrick likes Alison, and not Laurie, which leads to Laurie and Alison fighting. Then something happens that changes Alison's life forever, just as her mother's death did.
I did not feel that this book kept up pace and by the end of the book, the whole story had changed completely and the plot line was not consistent. By the end I was asking many questions that did not get answered. What happens between Alison and Patrick? Why did the story have to change so suddenly?
This was an average teen book, but definitely not the best. Look to Clark's other books for better reading.

Wonderful!!!!!!.......2003-02-23
This book is great. As I read it I began to fell like I undserstood the reason for many of the actions of the cast member. I also saw a side that I did not see on the show. As I read the book I couldn't wait to read what more was to happen. There were times when I read it at school and in I would start laughing and make sounds of exictement and people looked at me like i was crazy. Over all it was great and I found out more then the show could proviode. i felt like I could enjoy Europe when I go and think of the great mission I wish I could do. I also hope that obne day i could meet one of the cast of Road Rules 3 like Antoine or Belou. Speaking of which when reeading the stories you wonder what went wrong and yet you understand why the two couldn't be together although they were in love with each other. In this long road of life it is diffcult to understand the things that happen around us and we need to understand that all things happen for a reason. This book is proof of life and how it can have twist and turns and all in all it shapes your life and who you are and gives the human experince a great meaning.
awesome book.......2000-06-30
I would recomend this book for people who like Road Rules Europe and Islands of course! The Europe part is better than the Islands part in my opinion. Although the really deep and juicy details aren't really told it is still really interesting and good!
The Real Deal.......2000-06-16
I truly was hoping for more juicy details about these Roal Rules casts, unfortunately, I did not get all that I hoped for. This book has a fun format and does answer some outstanding questions about the casts....but the real dirt remains with the cast and crew. Buy it and enjoy it...just don't expect lots of answers!
Not bad.......1999-11-18
Not as good as the first Road Rules book. The episode guide should have blended with the rest of the book.
The book was pointless.......1999-02-15
After watching the show every Monday for the whole sessio I was sure to be first in line to pick this book up to check out everyone at a closer look. I was totally disapointed with it and did not like the book at all.

Customer Reviews:
Information that even the most avid of fans never knew.......1999-11-01
As an almost-obsessive fan of both the Real World and Road Rules, this was definitely one of the better books. Even if you have watched every episode of the shows, like I have, you should get this book. It tells what really happened with the romances and fights; what cast members really thought of each other, and it even contains lost missions that were unable to make it onto the show. I would recommend this book to anyone who has seen the show. So order it today!
Great read with the inside scoop on the Road Rules casts.......1999-07-25
Great, fun book for Road Rules fanatics
I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-05-21
I am obsessed with everything on Road Rules and Real World. To me, this was one of the better MTV books. You should read it if you like learning about how the characters really felt during their adventures. It was great!
I thought this book was so funny with tons of pictures!!!!.......1999-03-15
I started reading this book and i couldn't put it down. The pictures are so funny, and the entrees are juicy and tell you every thing that you never knew about the casts. I think this is a great book.
I hate to read, but I finished this in just 2 Days! Great!.......1999-02-09
This book had tons of information. It really made you feel like you were there. It gives you how cast members really felt about what the other cast members were doing. It gives you the FULL story, not the part that Bunim/Murray wants you to hear. You actually find out the reason the cast members were arguing, not just the argument. I hate to read, but I finished this book in just two days. Better than Road Rules: Passport Abroad and In the House: Real World Seattle. If you only plan to get one book about The Real World or Road Rules, this is the one!

Book Description
Has Devolution reconnected Scots to the political process? One of the core aims of the Scottish Parliament was that it would provide "Scottish Answers to Scottish Questions." Written by the leading figures in the field, this book asks how far that aim has been fulfilled, providing an independent, dispassionate account of what Scots think about some of the major social, moral and political questions being faced by Scottish policymakers and society.
Looking at what Scots make of their experience of devolution so far, it asks whether the policies pursued by the Scottish Parliament have been in tune with Scottish public opinion, and how far differences in attitudes within Scotland reflect traditional social divisions. Community care, housing, drugs and the devolution project itself have been the subject of recent public and political controversy -- attitudes towards these issues are explored in the first part of the book. The second part focuses on a number of key divisions within Scottish society including religion, class, age, national identity and asks how far these are reflected in differences in social and political attitudes among Scots. Based on the annual Scottish Social Attitudes Survey, this book presents a unique and authoritative insight to the state of public opinion in post-devolution Scotland.

Margery Perham was an outstanding influence on official and academic thinking on British Colonial rule and decolonization in Africa during the middle part of the century. The book traces how the Second World War transformed her view of colonial rule and of the rate at which it would have to be relinquished.

Ryan's Rules by Alison Kelly (Mills & Boon Hardcover).......2006-10-29
Description from the book back cover:
Breaking all the rules! Since Ryan Talbot had become Kirrily Cosgrove's self-appointed guardian angel, he'd been determined to make her live life by his rules: Rule 1: Never date any man Ryan didn't approve of. Rule 2: Find a respectable job and don't wear too much make-up - or dresses above the knee! Kirrily had always rebelled and enjoyed shocking him. Then she found herself unexpectedly sharing his home. Suddenly the enforced intimacy opened her eyes to Ryan's mesmerising, provocative sexuality. She was in danger of seducing a man Ryan definitely wouldn't approve of - himself!
