Book Description
How can today's workforce keep pace with an increasingly competitive global economy? As new technologies rapidly transform the workplace, employee requirements are changing and workers must adapt to different working conditions. This volume compares new evidence on the returns from worker training in the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Japan, Norway, and the Netherlands.
The authors focus on Germany's widespread, formal apprenticeship programs; the U.S. system of learning-by-doing; Japan's low employee turnover and extensive company training; and Britain's government-led and school-based training schemes. The evidence shows that, overall, training in the workplace is more effective than training in schools. Moreover, even when U.S. firms spend as much on training as other countries do, their employees may still be less skilled than workers in Europe or Japan.
Training and the Private Sector points to training programs in Germany, Japan, and other developed countries as models for creating a workforce in the United States that can compete more successfully in today's economy.

Book Description
Clearly written and free of statistical jargon, this invaluable guide concentrates on the practicalities of statistical analysis for anyone involved with agricultural research.
Each section starts with the key points, giving a quick reference to the contents and plenty of examples using 'real' data.
Successful experiment design starts with a statement of aims. The authors guide the reader through planning an experiment, including defining objectives, considering treatments, measurements of interest and the time and timing of assessments. Advantages and disadvantages of different experiment designs and the importance of data exploration and graphical presentation are covered, as are data collection, storage, validation and verification. Statistical techniques include the t-test, anlaysis of variance, basic regression analysis and non-parametric techniques. Assumptions inherent to these techniques are clearly identified (bearing in mind the principles and aims) without losing the reader in statistical theory. All of the techniques are illustrated with worked examples and give full interpretation of the results. Formulae are kept to a minimum in the main text, but are given in full in the appendix.
Customer Reviews:
A good little book.......2000-05-17
One of the best experimental design books I've read. More attention ought to be paid to design as good design makes the analysis at the end that much simpler

Book Description
A reconstruction of the Chinese sky of two thousand years ago, based on analysis of the first star catalogue in China and other sources. Presented in six well-sized star maps for 100 BC, it is especially important for the history of astronomy. The Han sky, with five times more constellations than Ptolemy knew, reflects diverse human activities. The way in which constellations were grouped discloses a systematic cosmology, uniting universe and the state. The work of the three Han schools is comparable to Ptolemy's Almagest. With three detailed Appendices on the constellations of the three schools, well illustrated to demonstrate the relation between sky and human society, this book is valuable not only for astronomy historians and sinologists, but in general for scholars interested in the ancient cultures of Asia.

Presentation matters.......2001-08-16
While I am in no position to evaluate the accuracy of the content of the book, I will offer a few remarks on the presentation of that information. Brill is a noted publisher of academic books, and the work in question is clearly aimed at an audience of scholars and academic libraries (note the list price!). However, the book fails miserably to adhere to basic standards of academic writing. For example, the format of most footnotes is irregular, and not in accord with standard Sinological practice. Should a reader wish to cross reference a claim made by the authors using the notes provided, the original source would be difficult to locate. Furthermore, the text would have benefitted from the hand of a skilled copy editor. For example, three of four references to the Han astronomer Luoxia Hong in the work consist of virutally identical sentences! One would expect more from Brill, and at the cost , one should demand better. Thus, while the information in the text may be accurate and important, the presentation of the material calls serious doubt to the entire enterprise.
A Marvelous Read.......1999-01-05
Whether you know nothing or know a lot about Chinese astronomy, you can feel confident in buying this book because it is simply EXCELLENT.
This is good for even non-Astronomists!.......1998-07-25
This is the first book on this subject so far that hasn't gotten too technical and hung up on mathematics. Although, there is that as well. The part I like best is the way the star maps correlate modern recognizable constellations to the Chinese ones. I was able to find two of the Lunar Lodges this way!

Product Description
During the last decade, many social scientists have sought to show that nature is not an eternal constant but an intrinsically unstable concept - a historical, cultural and social construct with powerful emotional, moral and political connotations. Imagining Nature sets out to explore some of the implications of and lacunae in this recent push to "denaturalise nature". But rather than asking, What is nature? as many academic writers have been doing, the contributors here ask, How is nature established as an entity? Through what processes and practices does nature achieve reality? The editors provide a synthetic introduction to the dozen contributions which comprise the volume. Of particular interest is their account of how the dismantling of nature as an unquestioned given, echoes and was triggered by a similar dismantling of culture as an anthropological concept. The book's first half, "Cosmologies", focuses on ways the practices of nature are embedded in overarching conceptual worldviews. Papers range from a sweeping critique of how neo-Darwinian biology, cognitive psychology and cultural theory have colluded to create the dominant narrative of human nature today, to an examination of Estonian wooded meadows as a mosaic of nature and culture that supports high diversity in both. Other ways to reconcile traditional and modern cosmologies emerge in comparative studies of economists and Algonquin hunter-gatherers, Danish biologists and Inuit fishermen. Chapters in the second half illustrate some of the means by which identity unfolds and becomes established in interacting with and imagining nature. The chapters examine nature and identity in the national mythologies of Scandinavia and Germany; two Fulani status groups in Burkina Faso; the confrontational Sami community of Manndalen, Norway; the spatial world of the Tsaatang nomads in Mongolia; and two neoclassic houses by Le Corbusier and Wright. While the individual contributions here will certainly interest specialists in the particular fields they represent, Imagining Nature is broadly interdisciplinary in appeal, and it is especially recommended to anyone intrigued by recent constructivist debate and the multiplying conceptions of nature in the social sciences.

Book Description
Once upon a time, twenty-four grown men would play baseball together, eat together, carouse together, and brawl together. Alas, those hard-partying warriors have been replaced by GameBoy-obsessed, laptop-carrying, corporate soldiers who would rather punch a clock than a drinking buddy. But it wasn't always this way ...
In The Bad Guys Won, award-winning former Sports Illustrated baseball writer Jeff Pearlman returns to an innocent time when a city worshipped a man named Mookie and the Yankess were the second-best team in New York. So it was in 1986, when the New York Mets -- the last of baseball's live-like-rock-star teams -- won the World Series and captured the hearts (and other select body parts) of fans everywhere.
But their greatness on the field was nearly eclipsed by how bad they were off it. Led by the indomitable Keith Hernandez and the young dynamic duo of Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, along with the gallant Scum Bunch, the Amazin's won 108 regular-season games, while leaving a wide trail of wreckage in their wake -- hotel rooms, charter planes, a bar in Houston, and most famously Bill Buckner and the eternally cursed Boston Red Sox. With an unforgettable cast of characters -- Doc, Straw, the Kid, Nails, Mex, and manager Davey Johnson (as well as innumerable groupies) -- The Bad Guys Won immortalizes baseball's last great wild bunch of explores what could have been, what should have been, and thanks to a tragic dismantling of the club, what never was.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Read on a Great Team filled with Bad People.......2007-09-21
As a lifelong Cincinnati Reds fan, my hatred of the 1986 Mets began during that season with a game on July 22, which was covered in the book, when then-Mets third baseman Ray Knight sucker punched Eric Davis, after a hard slide into third base. It was clear even then that this was a team you did not want to take to Sunday Mass.
Remarkably, in between the drugs, womanizing, booze, animal mutilation, gambling, and barroom brawls, the '86 Mets were able to play good enough baseball to win a World Series championship. And it was not just that they won, but how they won that made this team so memorable. First, by defeating the Houston Astros in dramatic fashion to win the NLCS, and then the Boston Red Sox in what has to be one of the greatest World Series ever played, especially Game 6. When you read Parlman's account, it is amazing this team did not fold under the pressures so many of its players inflicted on themselves. Of course, they did not collapse, in spite of themselves, and they won simply because they were that good of a team.
You also wonder how great this team could have been had so many of its players not self destructed. It is a question we will never know the answer to, but we know what happened in 1986, and Pearlman's in-depth coverage of the Mets that year gives a baseball fan useful insights into this troubled team's foibles and complexities.
Great book for a Met fan.......2007-08-29
Real interesting book about the 86 Mets. Read it while I was on vacation in the Florida Keys. You will enjoy it if you like baseball.
Excellent Read.......2007-03-21
As a big Mets fan who didnt get to remember this era this book filled me in with some great details about about my beloved 86 Mets. Hearing the first hand accounts of the players, trainers and management shed light on the championship Mets and how their hard partying led to the demise of what could have a been a dynasty.
Truly one of the best sports books ever written.......2007-01-05
Jeff Pearlman does the most amazing job following this unique, wild, out of control and self-destructive Met's team that had as much explosive talent as any team ever had.
You really feel like you are on the bus, in the dugout, etc.
A great read for any Sports fan or really anyone who loves to read about the behind the scenes stories of Sports teams, Rock Bands, etc.
I is a lot more exciting than a novel and Pearlman does such a great job on focusing on all of the players and the team as a hole. The insanity and recklessness of these players, most of them who were so young, so talented and had a chemistry that would bring out the best of themselves on the field, but the worst of themselves off the field. Explosive on and off.
Sometimes, I forget that in reality, greatly talented athletes, in their 20s, are usually immature young men who have had a lot of privilege and a lot of covering up of their off field activities. Remember when young, the feeling like you could live forever and not caring in the slightest about having to pay a price for ones abuses ?
It is a celebration of baseball played to its highest level, but it is also a story of how their abuses, which were past over when young, would catch up to them later.
GREAT, GREAT book.
Jon
A good read for any baseball fan.......2006-12-30
In 1970 I was 8 years old and really couldn't care less about baseball. On april 22nd of that year my Aunt Marge and Uncle Nick invited me to go with them with their two daughters to see my first Mets game at Shea Stadium. Sure, we were in the Upper Deck, four miles away from the action, but as Tom Seaver struck out the last ten Padres he faced and finished with a major leage tying record 19 strikeouts for the game, I was hooked. Even though I was an awful baseball player at the age of 8 and 9 (I never even got on base without either being walked or hit by a pitch until I was ten, and then it was either by an error or a fielder's choice) by eleven years old I finally was able to take advantage of some god-given talent, and by 12 years old was on the little league All-Star team. I was a shortstop by this time, but my passion was pitching. The numbers on uniforms didn't go up to 41 at the time, so I wore #5 (4 + 1) to show my allegience to Seaver. I would try to scrape my right knee on the clay with every pitch, and the moleskin on my right spike would have to be replaced every few games from dragging through the dirt. I was a Seaver wannabe through and through, and even into my high-school playing days, when Seaver was ultimately dealt to the Reds in 1977, my love of Seaver and his perfect delivery and pitching motion made me continue to emulate Seaver, although I remained a Mets Fan.
In 1973 my heart was broken by the A's, as they beat the team I so desperately was rooting for. Even though I had a great time watching them dismantle what I felt was a superior Reds team to get to the World Series (the pummeling of Bud Harrelson by Pete Rose not withstanding), I had never felt the joy of winning the ultimate series, and felt the void had to be filled, especially living amongst many Yankee fans in southwest Connecticut.
Finally, in 1986, I realized my ultimate goal of experiencing a World Series Championship was going to be accomplished. The fact that my college roomate (a Sox fan from Enfield, CT) called me when Boston was one out away from clinching the series made it that much more special.
The book brought back a lot of special memories for me. I'm not sure I had to be reminded about all of the drugs that were ingested during that time by the Mets (and their fans), but all in all it was a good book and took me only a few hours to read.
My mother-in-law, perhaps one of the gretaest Mets fans ever (since 1962)and perhapps the best Lenny Dykstra fan to grace the planet (she denies he ever hit the juice)gave the book to me for Christmas after she read it first, and also enjoyed it immensely.

Poet, book reviewer, and National Public Radio essayist Peter Walpole's first book touches the hearts of young and old. Easy enough to read for most pre-teens, yet tight and engaging enough for the more mature, The Healer of Harrow Point is a value-teaching book of real merit. Like Old Yeller or The Education of Little Tree, it's a classic coming-of-age tale that presents freshman-level metaphysical concepts such as intention, immortality, and "the oneness of all beings" in a down-to-earth, understandable fashion. Parents who hope to warn their teenager about the danger of firearms or the negative effects of seeking peer-group approval will find this an excellent choice. But be warned: anyone who picks up The Healer of Harrow Point will find that it's impossible to put down. If a movie studio hasn't purchased the movie rights yet, they should--Healer has an action- and emotion-packed plot that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. --P. Randall Cohan
Customer Reviews:
The Healer of Harrow Point.......2002-09-01
Thomas Singer will soon be twelve years old. For years, his parents have promised him he could go hunting with the men when he was twelve. His birthday present is to be a brand-new shotgun and an orange safety vest. Thomas's birthday happens to fall on the first day of hunting season.
But Thomas's initiation into manhood is much different that he anticipates. One day, while out walking in the woods he loves, he witnesses a poacher shoot a deer. He remains hidden, only to see an old woman lumber into the clearing, gather the deer in her arms, then murmur to it and stroke it. The fully-recovered deer bounds away. Thomas and the old woman also flee the enraged hunter.
Thomas learns that the woman's name is Emma, and they spend nearly every day together after that. At his insistence, she begins teaching him how to be aware of all living things. Thomas is naturally sensitive and learns quickly. He discovers that he can communicate with, and heal, animals.
Torn between his desire to go hunting with his father or honoring his new-found knowledge, Thomas makes his anquished decision on the morning of his birthday.
The Healer of Harrow Point is Peter Walpole's first novel, and it's engrossing from the first page to the last. It's a "coming-of-age young adult novel that addresses larger issues of spirituality and the connection of all life." Readers of all ages will find it compelling and impossible to forget.
Healing Yourself with the Healer of Harrow Point.......2000-11-25
Peter Walpole uses the imagery of a boy on the verge of manhood to mirror for us all the times of transition in our lives. Emma is Thomas' spiritual guru through his journey. Ultimately, the lessons he learns about himself transcend the simple physical healing that Emma strives to teach him. The book is beautifully written and captures the fire within all of us. Although it is targeted for "young adults" I think it will speak more directly to those of us who have already passed through various stages of our lives. This is a book to read with your teenage children to use as a springboard into a number of discussions about growing up and relationships.
An engaging warm-hearted tale!.......2000-06-09
The combination of fantasy with real life contemplation of the value of life made this a really fun read. I particularly respected the non-judgmental way in which Mr. Walpole deals with the hunters in this tale and hunting in general. The very real consequences of the loss of a life are dealt with in a creative and thoughful way. I read the whole book in one sitting!
please read!.......2000-05-09
I am a 6th grade student and thoroughly enjoyed this book. Once engaged in this book the action is terrific. I stayed up past 10:30 p.m. to finish this magicial, heart-warming, book.I would recommend this book to anyone with a love for animals, or anyone that likes a believable fantasy.
Classroom material.......2000-05-01
This was an enjoyable book that reminded me of similar ones weread for high school English classes. I can imagine a teacher usingthis book to start classroom discussions on decision making as well ason the interactions between people and nature. The book started off a little slowly for me, but after the opening scenes were set, the pace quickened. The story was believable enough, yet still not too hokey as to make it seem forced. Reading this book was time well spent.
