Are some cash crops appropriate?.......2004-07-31

With the often prevalent cases of malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa, some readers may find this book of interest. The authors describe the cultivation of cash crops in Africa, where these are exported, often to Europe. Coffee, for example, originated in Ethiopia. Now it is one of the most valuable agricultural commodities that is traded internationally. Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and others export it. But they face stiff competition from developing countries in South America. Plus, pricing is often resident in buyers or trading firms. So farmers may be barely able to eke a living. A race to the bottom.

Sugar and tea crops are also studied. And flowers. The latter are especially high value and perishable. Much of the value is in African tropical countries being able to grow these during the European winter season. All such cash crops are shown to bring in valuable income to struggling countries.

Dinham and Hines express concern that with African population growth still unabated, and with endemic malnutrition, some current choices of cash crops may not be optimal choices. These may impact the ability to grow enough food for domestic needs.

Global Amin.......2002-04-06

Fascism is often portrayed as an error in history, born out of desperate conditions and a weak social fabric. Richard Rubenstein, in THE CUNNING OF HISTORY, cautions against reading the Nazi rise as a freak accident, and attempts to frame it as developing logically from the course of capitalism. Mahmood Mamdani cautions us against seeing fascism in Uganda as a result of the individual, Idi Amin. Instead, he sees Idi Amin himself as a product of the specific conditions of the country at the time, which arose from a specific historical context, colonialism. He argues that fascism was supported by a continuation of colonialist thought even after Independence, thus the title which associates imperialism and fascism. Mamdani writes a brief but extremely insightful analysis of the foreign influences which shaped Uganda from the perspective of dependency theory. He argues that Amin was a social, political, and economic phenomenon constructed not just by Uganda, but with the help of the British, the US, and the Soviet Union.

This handbook is a comprehensive compilation of the state of current science regarding the snow avalanche phenomenon. Required reading for most level 2 avalanche courses, and highly recommended for casual backcountry users, this book really excels in the figures and diagrams included. Be warned, however, that the material is rather dense - not really a sunday read...

Every winter we hear of people who have become the victim of an avalanche while skiing, snowmobiling, or camping in mountainous country where a landslide of snow roars down off a mountain side faster than anyone can move out of its way. Co-authored by David McClung (a professor in the Department of Geography and leader of the avalanche research group at the University of British Columbia) and Peter Schaerer (a senior research officer and head of the Avalanche Research Center of the National Research Council of Canada), "The Avalanche Handbook" is now published and available in a newly updated and expanded third edition that includes all the latest information, techniques, and research on understanding the nature of avalanches, as well as how to avoid and/or survive encounters with them. Too scientific for most, but the best overal resource.......2004-09-25

If you have a significant interest in Avalanche science and theory, or are going to take an avalanche course this is the book for you. If you are looking to create advanced Avy skills and/or to become an Avy professional though this is the definative resource on Avalanches. It is required reading for most courses (starting with avy 1).

I believe that for most recreational readers this book does at times get "heavy". Its easy to lose interest in this book from time to time as the science overcomes the practical. If you are a weekend backcountry traveler and are looking for a book that will keep your attention and teach you how to travel safely in Avy terrain this book is probably a little much. Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain by Bruce Tremper is a much easier read and has all the most important information from this book. Combined with Snow Sense by Doug Fesler the two books are much more digestible for the average reader and a lot more fun as well.

A thorough introduction to avalanche theory........1998-11-21

For backcountry enthusiasts with a science background, this book provides a thorough introduction to avalanche theory. The book is divided into chapters which build a solid foundation (weather systems, snow structure) through snowpack basics (snow strength and deformation, snowpack structure) and well into more advanced concepts (snowpack analysis, avalanche prediction, search and rescue, and even control with explosives, etc.) It is an excellent, if heavy, read and I found it a valuable resource in the development of an intro avalanche course.

Practical Snow Analysis Examples and info.......2004-01-28

This handbook is a gem. Being a longtime boarder, I decided to make a point to increase my awareness of terrain and route selection in the backcountry and get more familliar with avies. This book is helping me accomplish that goal.

Info is straight forward, has practice examples to test your knowledge on when to ride and when to walk away from certain conditions, lots of pics to help explain terrain features and in depth "how to's" on testing snow strength, as well as detailed instructions on correct probing technique.

Added bonus: Craig Kelly helped contribute to the info in this book, and hence there are many pictures of him throughout. Much love to our fallen hero.

Worth $8.00? Oh heck yeah. Small price to pay to save the life of your friends and your own.

Great book. Excellent infomation and pictures. Not too tech. Good first book to read on the subject or to reinforce current knowledge.

Avalanches seldom touch man or his works, but when they do they can be disastrous. This illustrated handbook sets forth procedures for avoiding such disasters in ski areas, near roads and settlements, and in the back country.

New snowfall and old snow redeposited by winds are the major causes of avalanches. Melting and freezing or the presents or absents of a temperature gradient in the snow are difficult to observe directly but can make the snowpack either more or less susceptible to avalanching. Such variations often can be identified by digging pits in the snow.

When a snow slop fails, the impact of the avalanche depends on such variables as the length, shape, and roughness of the avalanche path. If disaster strikes buried victims must be rescued quickly, since the chance of survival decreases sharply with time.

Methods of avalanche control include artificial release by explosives, defense structures, public warnings, and land-use legislation.

This book was written by Kirk Marshall, and is 135 pages long. I liked this book because it had a lot of different settings and cool characters. It was also an intence story and was pretty much always exciting to read. Plus the author gave a good feel of the basketball games.

The Best part of this book was when Brain a sharp shooter for his basketball team went to the Mighty Mites basketball practice to see there dribbling skills. While he was there he learned some new tricks and got better at the game. It was also exciting because the Mighty Mites are 12 years old and are experts on dribbling. I thought that was the best part of the book because it was exciting to see what tricks the Mighty Mites did.

The most vivid story elements in this book were the theme, conflict, and the plot. The theme was very vivid because the whole story was about basketball and they were always playing it so it was evident. The author did a great job on the plot because every major part in the book would have something to do with the patriots winning the championship. He also did a good job on the conflict because at the very begining of the book it points out the conflict that they would have to get the two main players grades up before the championship games. Thatis why i liked this book, because of all the elements and action that Kirk Marshall put in his book.
