IAU Symposium No. 167 brought together researchers who use CCDs and arrays, designers and manufacturers of CCDs and Array Mosaics and those who write the software to control these devices and to reduce the large amounts of data contained in each frame.
At the meeting such topics as plans for applying the new technology to the new large telescopes that have been built recently and those planned in the near future, new developments in infrared arrays, advances and concerns with the use of CCDs in photometry and spectroscopy and the creation of large mosaics in photometry and spectroscopy and the creation of large mosaics of chips which allow larger areas of the sky to be covered in a single frame were discussed.
There were sessions devoted to the following topics: New Developments in CCD Technology; New Developments in IR Detector Arrays; Direct Imaging with CCDs and Other Arrays; Spectroscopy with CCDs and Other Arrays; and Large Field Imaging with Array Mosaics. Scientific results of studies made with this technology were covered in the poster sessions.
CCD and Array Detectors have become the detectors of choice at all the world's optical observatories. Such instruments on small university and college telescopes have turned these telescopes into instruments that can now do observations which in the past were done only on the largest telescopes. CCDs and Arrays are known as `the people's detector' because of their ability to turn small telescopes into true research instruments. On large telescopes observations can be made of extremely faint and crowded objects that were impossible to observe before the advent of CCD and Array technology.
The proceedings of this meeting will be useful to all those who are interested in the design, manufacture and use of CCDs and Arrays for astronomical observations.

It's great!.......1998-11-03

Peter Leschak's style of writing tales of life up north is both immediate and reflective. He starts out philosophically sounding a bit like a contemporary Calvin Rutstrum, but avoids being "preachy" by moving quickly into interesting but everyday stories of rural life. I am glad he has written other books: I plan to read them all!

Peter is one of the best authors I've read. The reason I address him by his first name is because *know* him.. Lives quite close to me. I've read each of his books several times over...and as for the feeling of "being" in the north woods, I sent a copy of this book to a friend in Texas--and she said she felt as if she were here. I promise--once you read this books, you'll be hooked, and want to go one with each of them...

If you've ever spent a winter in the northwoods, and even if you haven't, you'll enjoy this book. He accurately chronicles living in a small town in northern Minnesota. His writing in excellent, and as you read you will feel that you are standing next to Peter as he sees the wolves and the northern lights

Excellent book.......2007-01-09

I dont have much of a basis for comparison while rating this book, however, I did find it very useful. Tune to Win covers all facets of tuning race cars. It covers everything from theory to application. This book is a little older and therefore relates to older vehicles and designs, but, the theory is universal and will always be useful to beginners. The book is very easy reading and easy to follow (baby steps). It is also divided into logical chapters which makes quick lookups easy. I found this book to be extremely beneficial. This book has actually helped me to tune and setup my own formula car. I would recommend this book to anyone intersted in sportscar or racecar tuning and racing.

Great book for those just starting.......2007-01-03

Carrol Smith's book does a great job of introducing suspension design. The book also does a good job of giving you an idea of the amount of planning and work it takes to get a race car to perform well. The book will not teach you everything you need to know, but it will get you started. I recomend this for anyone who is interested in making their car handle better or even getting into racing. It's a must for anyone doing FSAE. While reading rememeber that Carrol Smith does have a sense of humor.

Another good one from Carroll Smith.......2006-02-23

This is a great introduction to vehicle dynamics and a basic guide to the overall tuning of the vehicle. Carroll Smith gives just the right amount of theory to go with his practical advice toward the end of the book so you can understand why it works (or doesn't).
Tune To Win does NOT take the place of Milliken & Milliken's Race Car Vehicle Dynamics but is certainly enough for tuning. Tune To Win does not have enough information for anyone building a car from scratch; for that, Race Car Vehicle Dynamics must be on the reading list.
Do note that this book is quite old, but the laws of physics have not changed. Tire compounds have improved, good shocks are more available, there are more manufacturers of differentials on the market, etc, but all of Smith's tuning advice and explanations of vehicle dynamics still apply.. so this is still a great read in 2006!

For Aspiring Race Engineers.......2005-02-16

The late Carroll Smith's book "Tune to Win" will appeal mostly to engineering minded car racing enthusiasts. Smith, in his patented blunt style, tells you everything you need to know about suspension geometry (both static and dynamic), handling issues related to alignment, springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars. While somewhat dated (1978), this book is still a gold mine of useful and accurate information. He goes on to discuss steering, under- and oversteer, and methods to set-up a race car based on what is actually happening with the car.

Also worth reading is the section on aerodynamics.

This book in unquestionably the bible of motorsport set-up. It is an absolute must for anyone who considers themselves a professional in this industry. .... He is one cool guy and a heck of a guru!

I bought Carroll's whole set of books with skepticism, but they helped me improve my game as a driver, and I am much more able to discuss with my engineer now. My engineer gave me his old ratty copy (it was obviously very heavily used) and ordered me to get a copy of my own. I AM VERY GLAD I DID.

I learned more in the preface about racing than I have in years and thousands of dollars of engineering and racing schools! The reason is that all of the pertinent information is directly provided to you - right up front. It is concisely organized to help you get the most out of yourself and your racing machine.

When I first read the book I thought it would be just another book about how bad music is for kids but Al talks about the positive aspects of music and a persons outlook as well as the negative. If a parent only reads one book about talking to thier kids about music then this is the one.

"Fifteen minutes!" you say. "That's too good to be true!" Okay, author Joan Bolker admits she gave her book the title Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day to get the reader's attention. And she admits that it's unlikely you'll actually finish a dissertation at that speed. As she tells her clients, however, a mere 15 minutes is much better than no writing at all when they're stuck. As a clinical psychologist who cofounded the Harvard Writing Center, Bolker has helped hundreds of writers complete their dissertations. She offers suggestions on how to create a writing addiction so that you feel incomplete if you don't write every day and stresses the need to set reasonable goals and deadlines for yourself to keep from getting discouraged. She also offers strategies for dealing with both internal and external distractions and for fending off writer's block. Even more important is the advice on some of the more awkward issues related to dissertation writing, such as how to choose your adviser carefully. (For example, when faced with the tradeoff between a famous advisor who is inaccessible and a less famous advisor who is willing to make time for you, Bolker advises, "If choosing a politically advantageous, famous advisor makes it unlikely that you'll complete your degree, it's clearly not worth it.") The book even includes a helpful appendix for advisers that could become the basis for an honest discussion of what student and adviser can expect from each other. While some of the book's advice is of interest only to dissertation writers, much of the information--on battling writer's block, for instance--is valuable to anybody engaged in writing. When I was writing my own dissertation, I found this book to be very helpful. The notion of working on one's dissertation for fifteen minutes a day is not far out. However, when there is dissertation dread, it is hard to relish the idea of working daily on the dissertation. I found that by following that advice, I would think about the dissertation more and developed a friendlier relationship with the whole project.

The approaches to developing a process, to writing a first draft, to managing the advisor relationship, and to dealing with interruptions were all very helpful. I recommend this book highly to my friends and my clients.

Make a Mess then Clean It Up.......2007-06-03

For academic reasons I've been reading a fair number of these little writing guides lately. Most of them turn out to be useless you-can-do-it cheerleading or weak opinionating with little relevance beyond the author's personal experience. This guide by Bolker rises above the pack because it's based not just on her own personal writing but also on her extensive experience in counseling graduate students from all walks of life. Granted, the title of this book is all wrong, which Bolker even admits in her introduction. Writing a dissertation in just fifteen minutes a day is far from realistic, and Bolker advises that you work on it at least fifteen minutes a day. One truly unique aspect of Bolker's counseling for graduate school writers is her advice on how to beat writer's block. In her system, write anything at all, no matter how sloppy, just to stay in the game - and then clean it up later. Bolker also has a unique take on feeding your writing habit as if it were an addiction, with the threat of withdrawal symptoms that should be avoided. The only problem with this book is that Bolker extends her advice on the writing process into larger graduate school matters - topics that are useful, but too important and varied for the quick treatment they receive here. Stick with Bolker's knowledge of the writing regimen. [~doomsdayer520~]

Reduces the butteflies.......2007-05-14

Joan Bolker's personal experience makes this book a credible source and therefore useful reference for your doctoral arsenal. She has started and failed and started and succeeded in her quest for her own doctoral dissertation. The book outlines effective methods and ice breakers in beginning the dissertation process, the mechanics, and one's mindset for doing so. I recommend this book to anyone embarking on this journey.

Format's great and so's the reading.......2007-05-13

This book has good, sensible information to help a person start, re-start, or finish a diss. The reading is smooth and easy (versus that particular dissertation stop-and-go, read-and-reread style I hate so much). The book is clear and concise and straight-forward. Get one, read it, get to writing! :-)
